Gary Lee Hammond, 83, of Lexington, Nebraska, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at the Bryan Medical Center East Campus in Lincoln, Nebraska.
He was born on October 31, 1940, in Lexington, Nebraska to Walter Lee and Myrene (Kincheloe) Hammond. He graduated from Lexington High School with the class of 1958. His first marriage to Connie Bray was blessed with three children: Ken, Chris, and Charlene. On November 25, 1978, Gary was united in marriage to Barbara (Reed) Stinehagen and welcomed into his heart her two daughters: Jolynn and Janna.
Gary was a third-generation farmer, and with his family was a steward of the land his entire life. He turned farm work into an enjoyable experience, blending fun with meaningful life lessons for them to learn. If he wasn't working, he was playing cards, reading his book of devotions, or making his family and friends laugh with his jokes and pranks. Gary was a hardworking, honest, and fun-loving man who was devoted to his faith, family, and farm. He showed others kindness and respect and was cherished by those who knew him. He loved fiercely and always showed concern for others, especially when it came to his wife and children.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Barbara Hammond of Lexington; children, Jolynn Stinehagen of Lexington, Ken (Rhonda) Hammond of Lexington, Janna (Bruce) Eberle of Grand Island, Chris (Kevin) Jenn of Amherst, and Charlene (Eric) Hollister of Grand Island; grandchildren, Dustin (Hannah) Hammond, Kaleb (Shelbi) Hammond, Makenzie (Derek) Brooks, Megan (Brett) Teel, Matt (Abegale) Eberle, Ashley Jenn, Austin (Alex) Jenn, Allison Jenn, Brandon Hollister, Justin Hollister, and Ryan Hollister; great-grandchildren, Addie, Cooper, Beckett, Ridgley, Ollie, and Daisie; as well as extended family and many friends.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents and his sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Dick Reed.
A service celebrating his life will be held on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at Lexington Christian Church with Pastor Dave Leraaen, officiating.
