No. 1 Nebraska picked up a 25-18, 25-20, 25-15 sweep at South Dakota State on Wednesday night. The match was played in front of a crowd of 5,113, an SDSU volleyball attendance record at First Bank & Trust Arena.
Wednesday’s attendance record for the Jackrabbits is the 17th time in the last four seasons that a program has set an all-time school attendance record when Nebraska has played at their arena.
Nebraska improved to 3-0 with the win, hitting .267 and finishing with 10 blocks for the second consecutive match. South Dakota State hit just .011, falling to 1-3.
Teraya Sigler led Nebraska with a season-high 10 kills, hitting .320 while adding four digs and three blocks. Skyler Pierce tallied a career-high seven kills, and Virginia Adriano chipped in five kills.
Bergen Reilly totaled 32 assists on the night, moving into fifth all-time in program history with 3,817 career assists. She surpassed Nikki Stricker (1990-93).
Set 1: Nebraska and SDSU battled through an early 4-4 tie before the Huskers built a 15-11 cushion, capped by a Jackrabbits serving error and Reilly’s ace. Consecutive SDSU errors grew the lead to 20-13 for the Big Red. Murray closed out the set with her third kill of the night to make it 24-18 before ending the set with a service ace to seal the 25-18 win for the Huskers. As a team, Nebraska hit .214 in the set while the Jackrabbits hit .000.
Set 2: The Huskers reeled off four straight points after two consecutive kills by Ogbechie to grab a 9-4 lead. SDSU fought back and held a 15-14 advantage at the media timeout. The two teams swapped points to a tie at 19 after an SDSU kill. A 5-0 run from the Big Red had the Huskers at set point after block assists from Adriano and Jackson. The Jackrabbits fought off a set point before a service error gave Nebraska a 25-20 win to grab a 2-0 lead.
Set 3: Nebraska built a 6-1 lead and forced an early timeout from the Jackrabbits. SDSU used a 4-1 run to pull within two (9-7), but the Huskers rattled off five of six to regain a commanding 14-8 lead, capped by a kill from Sigler. Nebraska continued to extend its lead and was the first to 20 points on a kill from Pierce, making the score 20-12, and cruised the rest of the way for the sweep.
Nebraska continues its road swing to begin the season, as the Huskers venture to Chicago for two matches this weekend. The Big Red take on DePaul at Wintrust Arena on Friday night before facing Missouri in the Allstate Big Ten/SEC Volleyball Challenge at Wrigley Field on Sunday night.
