Gary Lee Morrow, a dedicated educator and esteemed member of the community, passed away on March 19, 2024, at Meadowlark Pointe Assisted Living. He was born on January 24, 1938, in Central City, Nebraska to Floyd A. and Marjorie E. Morrow. He married Carol Ann Wilcox at their home in Minden, Nebraska on May 10, 1958. Their union was blessed with four children. They were happily married for 65 years.
Gary's passion for education led him to embark on a fulfilling career that spanned several decades. He began his journey in 1963 with his first teaching job in Grant, Nebraska, where he taught high school math, followed by Hebron and then Cozad, where he spent the rest of his teaching career. Throughout the years, Gary's commitment to shaping young minds shone through as he fully retired in 2007. Even after retirement, he continued to share his knowledge and love for teaching as a substitute teacher for a few more years. Apart from his work in education, Gary dedicated his summers to teaching ASCS and held various roles at Simplot and Nebraska Plastics. He also served as the summer recreation program director for kids' T-ball, baseball, and softball. He embraced athleticism from a young age and excelled as a great athlete throughout his life. Gary's love for sports extended beyond his personal accomplishments as he took immense joy in watching his children take on coaching roles, instilling in them the same values of dedication and teamwork that he held dear. One of Gary's greatest pleasures was traveling far and wide to support and cheer on his grandchildren during their own sporting events. His unwavering presence on the sidelines or in the stands served as a source of inspiration and encouragement for the younger generations, leaving an indelible mark on their lives.
Gary's academic pursuits were equally commendable. He graduated from Minden High School with the class of 1957 and went on to graduate from Kearney State Teachers College. His thirst for knowledge led him to further his studies at LSU from 1965 to 1968 to obtain his master's degree.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Gary found joy in various hobbies and interests such as hunting, fishing, bowling, camping, and decorating cakes. He was also a loyal supporter of all Cozad sporting events. Gary was also known for his exquisite woodworking skills which was evident in the intricate details of the nativity sets, chess pieces, fish figurines, and skiers he meticulously brought to life. His talent not only showcased his creativity but also his dedication to perfection in every piece he crafted.
Throughout his life, Gary was an active member of the Cozad Elks Lodge #2250 and the Cozad United Methodist Church. His involvement in these organizations reflected his deep-rooted sense of community and altruism.
Gary is survived by his loving wife Carol and beloved dog, Tysen; children: Deborah Joan (Scott) Miller of Aurora; Michael Lee (Shelly) Morrow of Phoenix, AZ; Bradley Dee (Terri) Morrow of Omaha; Anngela Kaye (Rick) Love of Cozad; grandchildren: Keri (Seth), Kurt (Elizabeth), Ryan, Cody, Taylor, Paul, Sydney (Tre), Erin (Zach), Eric (Gretchen); great-grandchildren: Jackson, Schylar, Riley, Renleigh ,Liam ,Reid ,Coye ,Adley ,Evan; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; sister Carolyn and brother-in-law Gene Thompson; and grandson Justin Morrow.
Gary’s legacy as an educator and community member will forever be remembered by those whose lives he touched. He will be dearly missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all who helped lovingly care for Gary over the years.
Memorials are suggested to Central Plains Hospice, Cozad United Methodist Church or an educational scholarship at Cozad High School. Cremation was chosen and a Memorial Service will be held Monday, March 25, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the Cozad United Methodist Church with Pastor Bellarmee Milosi officiating. A memorial book signing with family present will be Sunday, March 24, 2024 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Berryman Funeral Home.
