Community Connections is inviting runners, walkers and dog lovers to lace up for a good cause next month.
The nonprofit's annual Doggy Dash 5K and 1-Mile Run will take place Saturday, Sept. 12, at Iron Horse Park. The fundraiser benefits Community Connections' Mentoring and Substance Abuse Prevention System (SAPS) programs, which serve youth and families across Lincoln County.
The event includes a timed 5K and a one-mile family fun run and walk. Participants are welcome to bring their dogs along or take part without a four-legged companion.
Race-day registration and packet pickup begin at 7:45 a.m., with both races starting at 8:45 a.m.
Registration costs $28 per person and includes a commemorative long-sleeve T-shirt. Advance registration is available through Sept. 5 at platteriverfitness.com/doggy.
In addition to the races, organizers will award prizes for Best-Dressed Dog and Best "Pack" Theme.
Community Connections Executive Director Jayna Schaaf said proceeds from the event help fund programs that provide mentoring opportunities for local youth and support substance abuse prevention efforts throughout the community.
The organization's SAPS program includes monthly drug take-back events, medication lockbox distribution, community education campaigns and resources designed to encourage healthy communication between parents and children.
Community Connections has served Lincoln County since 1988 and is celebrating 38 years of connecting people with programs aimed at strengthening families and building healthier communities.
Businesses interested in sponsoring the event are encouraged to contact Community Connections. Organizers say sponsorships help cover event expenses so more proceeds can directly support mentoring and prevention programs.
For the safety of participants, dogs must remain on a leash no longer than six feet throughout the event. Puppies are not permitted.
