
Lawrence W. “Larry” Campbell, 79, of North Platte, NE passed away on Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at North Platte Care Center.
Larry was born on September 1, 1943 in Gothenburg, NE the son of Clarence and Norma (Emerick) Campbell. During his high school years, he was active in football and wrestling graduating from Cozad High School in 1961. He moved to North Platte in 1966 and hired on to the North Platte Police Department and in 1969 hired on the UPRR as a special agent for 30 years. He spent nine years on the Planning Commission and ten years as a City Councilman. He also served on the Chamber and DevCo boards.
On May 4, 1978 he married Donna Neal Whited. To this union they joined Larry’s two sons Dan and Mike Campbell and Donna’s two sons Troy and Brad Whited. They had land south of North Platte and developed a subdivision Fairway Estates on the South side of Lake Maloney golf course. They raised cattle, he especially liked Corrientes, selling the calves for roping events with the help of Troy and Brad Whited.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 45 years, Donna; sons, Dan (Juelia) Campbell of St. Albans, W.VA, and Mike (Lisa) Campbell of North Platte; step sons, Troy Whited of Lincoln and Brad Whited of North Platte; grandchildren, Cory, Derek, Megan, and Jaiman Campbell all of North Platte, and Shawn Campbell of St. Albans, WV; step grandchildren, Rio and Tee Whited of Wallace; brother, Jim (Joyce) Campbell of Cozad; sister, Cheryl Campbell of Gothenburg; and many nieces, nephews and many friends, including the loving staff at the North Platte Care Center; it took a Village.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Marcie Nelson and her infant son and Alice.
A graveside memorial service will be planned for a later date at North Platte Cemetery. Memorial visitation and book signing will be from 1:00 – 6:00 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. on Monday, February 13, 2023 at Carpenter Memorial Chapel, which has been entrusted with the arrangements.
