
Steve Albert Mattox of North Platte, NE passed away at Great Plains Health in North Platte on August 21, 2023 at the age of 86.
Steve was born to Viola and Mount Mattox, Sr. on April 6, 1937 at Broken Bow, Nebraska, where he grew up. After graduating from high school, Steve enlisted into the U.S. Navy and served from 1955-1957.
Following his discharge, he returned home and ranched. On September 20, 1958, Steve married Stella Niles at the Berean Church in Broken Bow. They started a family and lived in various towns around Nebraska before divorcing after 50 years of marriage.
In 1969, Steve attended Central Nebraska Technical School in Hastings, Nebraska, then Central Law Enforcement in Grand Island, Nebraska. He became a Deputy Sheriff and worked in Arnold, Walbach and Litchfield. After serving in law enforcement for many years, Steve was a maintainer operator for Custer County in Nebraska until 1980 when he moved to North Platte and went to work for Buffalo Bill's Scouts Rest Ranch, from which he retired.
Steve served our country with pride and was a man of faith who attended the Broken Bow Berean Church, Cowboy Church, and Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Everett Jr. "Sonny", Cecil, Jack and Lyle Mattox; sisters Ruby Plambeck and Mable Ellingson; and two grandchildren.
Survivors include Steve's children, Dennis Mattox, Geno (Dianna) Mattox and Gloria Mattox Tyan of North Platte, NE, Viola (Gene Jr.) Petersen of Hershey, NE, Tammy Montag of Kearney, NE, Bonny Mattox and Candy (Luke) Hanson of Ansley, NE, and Sue McFee of Council Bluffs, IA, and their mother, Stella Mattox of North Platte, NE; his sisters Hazel Close of Boise, ID and Judy (Ray) Lunkwitz of North Platte, NE; and sister-in-law Madeline Mattox of Tennessee; as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, two great great-grandchildren; and other family.
Cremation was chosen. Graveside services with Military Honors will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 28, 2023 at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell, NE with Ned Cooper officiating. The guest book may be signed online at odeanchapel.com, or prior to the services at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore in North Platte, NE, which is in charge of arrangements. Memorials are suggested to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
