Gene attended school in Gurley and then enlisted into the United States Army Airborne. After his discharge he returned to Sidney where he worked for Wheat Belt Public Power District as a lineman. After he became a supervisor with the pipeline, his family moved from Sidney to several other places during his career ‐‐ North Platte, New Mexico, Cheyenne, and their final move was in January 1979, back to North Platte, Nebraska. After his retirement from Conoco Pipeline Company, Gene enjoyed working with his son at Jim's Sun Valley Sod Farm.
