🎥 UPDATE: Leaks contained, but cleanup work keeps I-80 closed

UPDATE 8 a.m. Friday with new information from the Nebraska State Patrol: Interstate 80 remains closed between North Platte and Brady while cleanup from Thursday's accident continues. One of the two semi drivers sustained minor injuries. 

Drums of corrosive material being haul by one of the semis fell during the accident, and some ruptured. The leaks are contained, but cleanup continues. There is no danger to the public, the NSP said.

UPDATE 4:30 p.m. Thursday with new information from the Nebraska State Patrol: The accident that closed Interstate 80 on Thursday afternoon was a two-semi injury accident near Maxwell on eastbound I-80.

The crash has also caused the leak of a corrosive material being hauled in one of the trucks, the NSP reported. The North Platte Fire Department is on scene and additional haz-mat crews including the Nebraska Hazardous Incident Team (which includes personnel from several agencies) is responding to assist in cleanup and management.

This is likely to be a lengthy closure as the process continues, the NSP said.

NORTH PLATTE — Shortly after 3:30 pm Thursday, the Nebraska State Patrol reported a crash on Interstate 80 near Maxwell. I-80 is closed for both directions of travel between mile marker 179 (North Platte) and mile marker 199 (Brady) due to a crash.

Highway 30 is the alternate route around the closed area.
