Longtime Wellfleet/Maywood resident, Kurt Lee Remus passed away at Great Plains Health on September 3, 2023, at age 82.
Kurt was born to Walter and Dortha Remus on the family ranch near Wellfleet on June 25, 1941. He grew up on the farm northeast of Wellfleet and graduated high school from the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture in Curtis.
Kurt farmed and ranched his whole life. He was a director on the Maywood Co-op's Board of Directors from 1986 – 1991. He served as the board's vice chairman from 1991 – 1999 and became chairman of the board in 2000. In 2000, Kurt was an integral part in leading the vote to merge Maywood Co-op and Ag Valley Co-op; the merger became effective October 1, 2000. Kurt retired from the Board of Directors in 2001 after the successful merger between the two Co-ops.
He enjoyed farming and deer hunting with friends, and during high school Kurt played in a band.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Grant and wife, Lela Remus, and Loran Remus; nephew-in-law, Ron Bourne; and niece, Linda Williams.
Survivors include his sister, Muriel Yonkers (Carl) of Maywood; sister-in-law, Betty Remus; nieces and nephews, Sheri Bourne (David Collins), Jerry Remus (Peggy), Pat Baker (Tim), Pam Clark (Bob), Janet Remus, Gaylene Stinman (John), Keith Williams, Jeff Yonkers and Ed Yonkers (Sheila); as well as numerous great-nieces, great- nephews and close friends.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, September 9, in the Wellfleet Cemetery with Pastor David Boyd officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials are to the donor's choice. Condolences may be shared at odeanchapel.com. Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore is in charge of arrangements.
