Robert Lewis "Bob" Christie (1930-2021)

Robert “Bob” Lewis Christie, age 90, of McCook, Nebraska passed away Wednesday evening, January 20th, 2021 at his home in McCook.  He was born to Robert and Clara (Schoonover) Christie on July 1st, 1930 in Joliet, Illinois.  Bob graduated high school from Keokuk High School in Keokuk, Iowa.  He furthered his education at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois where he graduated with a master’s degree in history.  Bob was inducted into the military in 1952.  He served in Korea and was honorably discharged in July of 1954.

Robert was united in marriage to Carolyn King on October 29th, 1960 at the Congregational Church in Cambridge, Nebraska.  To this union three children were born.  The couple made their first home in Oshkosh, Nebraska where Bob taught before moving to McCook in 1967 where he accepted a position at McCook Community College.  In addition to teaching history, political science, and western civilization, Bob also served as the athletic director and golf coach; he retired in 1994.

Bob was a longtime member of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in McCook and was a member of the Elks lodge #1434 of McCook where he served as Exalted Ruler.  He was active in the Masonic Lodge, the Tehama Shrine, and the Royal order of Jesters.  Robert was a longtime member of Heritage Hills Golf Course and loved to golf.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time at his cabin at Medicine Creek Reservoir.  Bob enjoyed all sports but was especially passionate about Big Red Football. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Carolyn in 2010; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ralph and Phyllis King and brother-in-law, Marty Huxoll.

Bob is survived by his children, Kim Henggeler of McCook, Nebraska, Rob Christie of Holton, Kansas, and Kara (Shannon) Walker of Hastings, Nebraska; grandchildren: Ashley Brown, Jacob Brown, Lawrence Walker, Jessica Walker, and Christopher Walker; great-grandchildren: Athena, Autumn, and Easton Barney; sister-in-law, Brenda Huxoll; as well as his nephews, cousins, and friends.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M. (CT), Wednesday, January 27th, 2021 at Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell, Nebraska with Pastor Lisa Mensinger officiating and full military honors.  Masks will be required.  Bob will be laid to rest with his wife Carolyn.  Memorials are suggested to St. Alban’s Episcopal Church of McCook or to the family of Robert Christie for future designation.  Online condolences may be left at herrmannfh.com.  Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook, Nebraska is entrusted with arrangements.
