Gregory Vargas (1949-2020)

Gregory Vargas, age 71, of North Platte, Nebraska died at Great Plains Health in North Platte on Monday, September 28, 2020.

Greg was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa to Mildred and Fulgencia Vargas on February 16, 1949.  He grew up in Council Bluffs and after graduating from high school, enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1967.  Greg served in Vietnam, then was assigned to Offutt Air Base in Omaha, Nebraska.

Following his honorable discharge in 1971, Greg moved to North Platte, Nebraska where he began working as a meter reader for the gas company, then hired on with the Union Pacific Railroad.  He worked as a Switchman, then a Conductor, until retiring.

On October 9, 1993, Greg married Kimberly Cortez in North Platte and they were together for over 10 years when she died.

Greg was baptized in the Catholic Church and was a member of Eagle Aeries #2839.  He liked being with his family and enjoyed mowing his yard.

Along with his wife, Kim, he was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Gary Vargas, and sister, Stephanie Vargas.

Survivors include Greg's daughters, Nicole (Deon) Jackson and Michelle Vargas, all of North Platte, Nebraska; grandchldren Zack Vargas, Derek (Delaney) Vargas; Cayden Jackson, and Chantel Vargas; great-granddaughter, Ellie; sisters Pamela Proctor of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Mercedes 'Mercy' Dschaak of Omaha, Nebraska; a brother Frank Vargas of Las Vegas, Nevada; and other family.

Cremation was chosen.  Memorial service with Military Honors will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 16, at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore in North Platte, Nebraska.  The memorial book may be signed online at odeanchapel.com or at the service.  Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore in North Platte, NE is in charge of arrangements.
