NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — Great Plains Health has announced a planned leadership transition in its Emergency Department, with longtime physician Dr. James Smith stepping down as co-Medical Director effective Sept. 1 as he moves toward retirement.

Smith has been part of the Great Plains Health medical staff since 2004 and has served as Medical Director of the Emergency Department since 2006. In recent years, he has shared leadership responsibilities with Dr. Renee Engler as co-Medical Director.

Hospital officials said the transition is part of a long-standing succession plan designed to ensure continuity in leadership while Smith begins scaling back his administrative responsibilities.

Beginning Sept. 1, Engler will become the sole Medical Director of the Emergency Department.

Although stepping away from the leadership position, Smith will remain an active member of the Great Plains Health team. He will continue caring for patients in the Emergency Department, serve as LifeNet Medical Director, maintain his emergency medical services leadership responsibilities and assist Engler during the transition.

"It has been an honor to serve in this role for so many years," Smith said. "I look forward to continuing patient care and supporting Dr. Engler and the team as this transition moves forward."

Engler joined Great Plains Health in 2011 and has served as co-Medical Director since 2013. She is board-certified in emergency medicine and also serves as Medical Director of Urgent Care and the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program. Her leadership experience includes serving as the hospital's past Chief of Staff and as Medical Director for two rural EMS agencies.

"I'm honored to continue serving in this role and to build on the strong foundation Dr. Smith has established," Engler said. "Our focus remains on delivering exceptional care for our patients and community."

Great Plains Health also announced the addition of Dr. Colten Hall to its Emergency Department medical staff in August. Hall, a North Platte High School graduate, is returning to his hometown as part of the health system's continued effort to recruit physicians with local connections.

Hospital leaders said the leadership transition reflects Great Plains Health's ongoing commitment to maintaining strong clinical leadership and providing high-quality emergency care throughout the region.
