UPDATED Authorities identify shooter, victim in North Platte shooting

Authorities have identified both the shooter and victim of a Wednesday afternoon shooting in North Platte.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office said the shooter, who died by suicide after the shooting, was identified as Gary Lehl, 84, of North Platte.

Authorities said Lehl was involved in some sort of a dispute with Carl Thompson, 56, of York. 

Authorities said Lehl shot Thompson multiple times before dying by suicide a few blocks away.

Thompson was initially transported to Great Plains Health before being life-flighted to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. He is listed in serious but stable condition.

The investigation is ongoing.

Update 6/8/2022 8:20 p.m.

Authorities have released more details on a Wednesday afternoon shooting in North Platte.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office said the Lincoln County 911 Center received a call reporting a shooting near 10th and Roosevelt Streets at around 3:45 p.m.

Deputies responded to the scene and discovered a 56-year-old male from York, NE, with multiple gunshot wounds. The man was transported by North Platte Rescue to Great Plains Health where he is reported to be in very serious condition.

Authorities soon learned that the suspect, an 84-year-old North Platte man, drove from the scene of the shooting to the 1800 block of East 12th St., where he shot himself one time. He was transported to Great Plains Health, where he was pronounced dead.

Deputies learned the two men have known each other for several years and had an argument prior to the shooting.

The names of those involved are being withheld. 

The investigation is ongoing.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Authorities in North Platte are investigating a shooting that left one person dead.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office said the shooting happened Wednesday afternoon in the area of North Roosevelt and East 10th Streets.

Authorities said one person was shot by a male subject who then died by suicide.

Authorities did not release any other details on the shooting or the status of the victim who was shot.

The Coffee Bin in North Platte closed early amid the investigation and the proximity to their location.

There is no ongoing threat to the public, according to authorities.
