
Burton "Butch" Mires, age 79, of McCook, Nebraska., passed away at his home on Sunday, June 11, 2023. He was born in Baker, Oregon on February 4, 1944, to Elmer and Marjorie (Fitzgerald) Mires. Butch’s father worked for the railroad and the family lived in Oregon, Wyoming, and Nebraska during his childhood years. The family moved to North Platte where Butch graduated from North Platte High School in 1962. Butch worked in Denver, CO for a shoe store prior to entering the United States Army in May of 1965. He was stationed in Germany and was Honorably Discharged on May 9, 1967. Upon his return to Denver, Butch met a young teacher, Mary Jane Prochazka. The couple was wed on June 21, 1969, at St Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Atwood, KS. The couple moved to McCook in 1979. Butch was employed by the McCook Gazette for 25 years, then he worked for Sears Retail Store for 12 more years.
Butch was a member of the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the Optimist Club, and the McCook Chamber of Commerce. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf, and the outdoors. He considered Mary Jane his best friend. They loved spending time together, whether it was for a ride around town, the country, or to Barnett Park. Butch loved to work in his yard and take care of his garden. They enjoyed time spent with son, Jon and family in Colorado. Butch loved life. He always had a good sense of humor and never knew a stranger.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Marjorie; brother, Terry Mires; grandparents, Mildred and William Fitzgerald, Carrie and Elmer Burton Mires Sr; brothers-in law, James Prochazka, George Krahe, and William Tolly.
Butch is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Mires of McCook; son, Jonathan and wife, Whitney; two grandsons, Elijah and Asher; sister, Jan Tolly of Wausau, WI; sisters-in-law, Betty Mires of Petersburg, IN; Patricia Prochazka of Atwood, KS and Janet Krahe of Topeka, KS; many nieces and nephews.
The family has chosen cremation. The family will greet friends Sunday from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM. Rosary will be recited at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel on June 18, 2023 at 5:00 PM with Father Bernard Kimminau officiating. A private Mass of Christian Burial will be on June 19, 2023. Following Mass, a private family inurnment will take place at Memorial Park. Military Honors will be conducted by the Nebraska National Guard Honor Detail to honor Butch’s service to his country. Family has asked that In Lieu of Flowers, a memorial will be established in Butch's name to be designated in the future. Friends may leave online condolences at hermannfh.com.
