Charles Chester Harshfield was born on November 24, 1929 in Cambridge, Nebraska to Eddie W. and Clara J. (Fry) Harshfield. He attended school in rural Furnas County, Nebraska.
On July 4, 1948, Charles was united in marriage to Colleen Meguire. The young couple made a home in Pine Bluffs, Wyoming where Charles worked for his sister, Lois and brother-in-law, Avon. They later moved to Sterling, Colorado where their five children were born: son, Edward and four daughters, Katherine, Christene, Carol, and Clara Jean.
Charles was never afraid of hard work. He worked as a farmhand, and on road construction. He also helped build a canal for the Trenton Dam near Trenton, Nebraska. In addition to working on ranches in Sterling, Colorado Broken Bow, Nebraska, and Glendive, Montana, Charles was also a self-employed truck driver for much of his life. In 1982, he married Jean Kelley in Broken Bow. She preceded him in death in 2003.
Charles passed away on Thursday, August 24, 2023 at Cozad Community Health Systems. He was 93 years of age.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Edward W. Harshfield; brother, Harold; five sisters, Ruth, Lois, Velma, Norma, and Joyce; and his second wife, Jean Kelly Harshfield.
Charles is survived by his four daughters: Katherine Harshfield of Loveland, Colorado, Christene (Bill) Pimple of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Carol Harshfield of Loveland, and Clara Jean (Reese) Depperschmidt of Loveland; four grandchildren: Steven and Jeremy Pimple and Kyle and Emily Depperschmidt; great-granddaughter, CateLynn Harshfield; step-children Richard Tondreau, Lachelle, Ryan, and Shane Kelley; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Cremation was chosen and graveside services are being planned for Saturday, September 30, 2023, 11AM at Fairview Cemetery in Cambridge, Nebraska.
