John Edwin Kahl, of Hershey, Nebraska (originally of Glendive, MT), passed away at his home on November 15, 2023 surrounded by his family.  He was born on September 27, 1938 to John Charles Kahl and Mabel Marie (Brophy) Kahl in Wibaux, Montana.

John graduated from Wibaux High School in 1956 and afterwards entered the US Army.  Upon being honorably discharged, he returned to Montana to work custom combining.  He then moved to Crookston, NE to manage the local lumberyard.  After some time, he returned to Wibaux to work in the oil fields.  In 1963, he graduated from the Montana Highway Patrol Academy thus beginning a 40 year public service career consisting of state trooper, highway vehicle safety officer and being elected as sheriff of Dawson County, MT.

A man of unwavering integrity, he exemplified the principle of service before self, both in his career and his life.  Whether it was lending a helping hand to a neighbor in need or a stranger while on patrol, he embodied the spirit of selflessness. His commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of others was a testament to his noble character.

As a devoted spouse and father, he treasured the bonds that held our family together. His love was the cornerstone of our home, providing unwavering support and warmth to each member. With a heart full of love and understanding, he created a haven where laughter echoed and shared moments became cherished memories. His role as a spouse and father was marked by patience, guidance, and an enduring commitment to ensuring the happiness and well-being of his loved ones.

He dedicated his life to spreading love and kindness, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. His legacy of love and kindness will forever be cherished.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sherry Kahl of Hershey, NE; four children, Tana (fiancé Dennis Hahne) Jensen of Kulm, ND, Yvette Troyer of Hershey, NE, Stacey Kahl of Aurora, CO, and Jared (Lauren) Kahl of Tucson, AZ; son-in-law Kyle Troyer; 11 grandchildren, JD Troyer, Kyla Jensen, Ryce Troyer, Alexis Jensen, Xavian Geiger, Calie Troyer, Jaryn Geiger, Tucker Hahne, Nathaniel Kahl, Spencer Kahl and Nevaeh Troyer, siblings Elaine Begger of Beach, ND, Marcella (James) Wiseman of Beach, ND, and Charles (Judy) Kahl of Wibaux, MT; sister-in-law Adeline Kahl of Chanhassen, MN, brother-in-law Gary Barnaby of Wibaux, MT and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends. 

John was preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law Joseph and Merle Barnaby, siblings Erwin Kahl, Clara (Norm) Hunter, Valaria (Danny) Burnosky, Bud Kahl, Bernice (Frank) Kreitinger; and brothers- in-law Harry Begger, Roger Barnaby and Virgil Barnaby. 

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Dr. Kent Allison, nurse Tammy Prock and the Brookestone Hospice care team who, through their expertise, compassion and tireless commitment, provided exceptional care for John.

Cremation was chosen.  A memorial service will be held in the spring in Wibaux, MT where John was born and raised. 

In lieu of flowers, the family has chosen to honor the memory of John by establishing a memorial scholarship. This scholarship will celebrate his legacy of compassion, fairness, and love by supporting aspiring individuals in their pursuit of a career as a public servant ensuring a lasting impact on the lives of those who receive the scholarship.
