North Platte Police Investigating Death of Lincoln County Jail Inmate

A Lincoln County Jail inmate has died after being found unresponsive in his cell Sunday morning.

According to a news release from the North Platte Police Department, jail staff discovered 48-year-old Matthew McCarthy unresponsive in his cell at approximately 7:54 a.m. on June 7. The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office contacted the North Platte Police Department regarding the incident.

Jail personnel immediately began life-saving measures before McCarthy was transported by ambulance to Great Plains Health. He was later flown by air ambulance to UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital in critical condition.

McCarthy later died while receiving treatment at the Colorado hospital.

Authorities said the cause and manner of death remain unknown.

The North Platte Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division is conducting an investigation into the incident. Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be submitted to the Lincoln County Attorney's Office for review and pending grand jury proceedings.

Police said no additional information will be released until the grand jury review process has concluded.
