
Mary Ann Lockwood of North Platte, NE, passed away on August 23, 2022. She was born on July 26, 1921, to John and Anna (Laun) Jezl in Tobias, NE. Upon graduating from Tobias High School in 1938, at the age of 17, Mary Ann began teaching in one-room schools. After teaching school for seven years, she joined the U.S. Nurses Cadet Corps on September 4, 1945. Completing her three years of training at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital School of Nursing in Lincoln, NE, she became a licensed registered nurse.
On September 13, 1948, Mary Ann married Milton Greenwood and they moved from Lincoln to North Platte. Milton passed away on September 9, 1957. She married Whitley Pemberton September 15, 1962; they were divorced in 1967. On October 5, 1971, she married Clyde Lockwood. After 50 years of marriage, Clyde passed away on June 9 of this year.
During her nursing career, Mary Ann was employed at St. Mary’s Hospital, Memorial Hospital, and Great Plains Regional Medical Center, all located in North Platte. She was active in the church and served as a member of Catholic Daughters Court Our Lady of Fatima #154, Holy Spirit Church Circles of Faith, and MOMs.
Mary Ann had a beautiful voice and loved to sing. She participated in community theater musicals and was requested to sing for many special occasions in her younger years. Mary Ann and Clyde would handcraft Christmas ornaments each year for their grandchildren. Mary Ann also enjoyed crocheting, embroidery, and canning. She blessed so many family members, and others who touched her life, with handmade afghans and baby blankets. She is remembered by those who knew her as a woman of kindness and grace.
Mary Ann is survived by a large family: daughters Constance Greenwood of Kirkland, WA, Mary Greenwood-Bell (Mark) of Parker, TX, and JoAnn Greenwood (Ray Jones) of Hewitt, TX; sons John Greenwood (Nancy) of Lenexa, KS, and James Lockwood of Akron, CO; step-daughters Carol Frye of Tucson, AZ, and Marcia Jones (Mike) of Riverton, UT; step-son William Lockwood (Lucy Del Giorgio) of Tucson, AZ; step-daughter-in-law Janet Lockwood of Mulkiteo, WA; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She is preceded in death by several dear family members: her husband Milton; her husband of 50 years Clyde; step-son Gerald Lockwood of Mulkiteo, WA; her brothers Joseph, James, and Frank; and her sister Anna Belle Darnell.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in North Platte, NE, on October 12, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. preceded by a rosary at 10:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to St. Patrick’s Catholic Schools Endowment Fund or Holy Spirit Building Fund.
