NORTH PLATTE, Neb - The North Platte Chamber Ambassadors will host their annual Junior Ambassador Classic golf tournament at the Rivers Edge and Lake Maloney golf courses in North Platte July 28-29.
The tournament lures in about 100 youth, ages 7-18, from around the state every year. The goal of the event, according to Ty Lucas, committee co-chair, is to help those who are new to competitive golf develop courage and confidence in addition to meeting others with similar interests.
The youngest golfers will play nine holes, while the older ones will play 18 holes. Prizes will be awarded for first through third place in each flight and division, and everyone who competes will receive a souvenir.
Golfers will have the option of choosing between the first round of the tournament or an instructional clinic for all ages July 28 at Lake Maloney. The tourney will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until 4:30 p.m. It will be followed by a barbecue and Junior Slugfest from 6-8 p.m.
“Players in the Slugfest will be randomly grouped into scramble teams that compete in a ‘sudden death’ playoff for trophies,” Lucas said. “It’s a feature that is unique to the Junior Ambassador Classic and one that has become quite popular.”
Play will resume at 9 a.m. July 29 at Rivers Edge - followed by trophy presentations from 1-3 p.m.
More than 25 local businesses, including the golf courses, helped to offset the cost of the Junior Ambassador Classic to make it affordable for youth to attend. The entry fee is $30 for nine holes or the instructional clinic and $40 for 18 holes.
Space is limited. Registration forms can be downloaded on the North Platte Chamber website, nparea.com. They are also available at the Chamber office and at the River’s Edge and Lake Maloney golf shops. Entries must be returned to the North Platte Chamber Ambassadors, 502 S. Dewey St. in North Platte, by July 21.
