Frederick M. Hummer passed away peacefully in Cheyenne, Wyoming on April 18, 2021. He was born in Hastings, Nebraska on January 31, 1938, to Merle S. Hummer and Evelyn O. (Nunamaker) Hummer. He spent his early childhood in Hastings. At age 10, Fred and his mother moved to McCook, Nebraska. He attended McCook Public Schools graduating from McCook High School in 1956. Fred earned an associate degree in science from McCook Jr. College and furthered his education at Colorado State University, earning a BS in Animal Sciences in 1961.
Fred worked in the beef packing industry for 20 years. He was employed with Iowa Beef Processors (IBP) in West Point, NE, Amarillo, TX, and Sioux City, IA. After leaving IBP, he co-owned a cattle feedlot in Mead, NE. After retiring, Fred and Judy moved to Lincoln, NE.
Fred married Marilyn Meyers and was blessed with three children, Scott (Margo), Julie (Carl) Bellmyer, and David. He later married Judy (Bishop) Baumfalk. To this union, two children were born – Amy (Steve) Renne and Eric (Bev) Hummer and one stepson, Kent (Sherrill) Baumfalk.
Fred is preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors left to cherish his memory include his wife, Judy; his children; grandchildren Marnie Bellmyer, Zachary and Andrew Hummer, Kaitlyn and Derek Baumfalk, Brian (Kaila), Jeremiah, and Jason Renne, Madysen, and Grant Hummer. He is also survived by stepsister, Jackie Coxson; cousin, Alvern Ziegler and family; and life-long friend, Gary (Linda) Romine; brothers-in-law John and Jack Bishop; and sister-in-law Janet Lytle; and nieces and nephews.
Fred was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Cotner No. 297, A.F. & A.M. and a Noble of Sesostris Shrine in Lincoln, NE. He was a Freemason for over 30 years. He was also a lifetime member of the Colorado State University Alumni Association.
He played football for McCook Jr. College. Fred loved WWII history, loved reading, and listening to classical music. He was a die-hard Nebraska sports fan and loved the Boston Red Sox. He thoroughly enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in their various activities.
Fred was a beloved father, husband, grandfather, and friend and will be deeply missed by all.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 30, 2021 at 2:00 pm at the Memorial Park Cemetery in McCook, Nebraska. Arrangements have been made by Herrmann-Jones Funeral Home in McCook.
