NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The North Platte 80s baseball team will return for a third season in 2026.
This will continue a partnership that helps fund improvements at Bill Wood Field and provides entertainment for the community.
“Their attendance wasn't probably as good as they wanted it to be in year one, but it did get better in year two," Mayor Brandon Kelliher said. "And so they're willing to come back in year three.”
Kelliher said the team’s presence helps pay for needed upgrades at Bill Wood Field. “We hope to provide additional revenues to continue to improve baseball across the city,” he said.
Recent improvements include a shade structure along the bleachers, and the city is planning a new building with updated bathrooms. Kelliher added, “It's just fun to see those kids out there playing baseball, and people having fun, watching the game, and people get into following some of the players.”
The team operates under a flat fee per game, which helps coordinate the schedule with other users, including North Platte High, St. Pat’s/Maxwell combined teams, and American Legion Baseball. “For the most part, they pay the city a fee for use of the fields,” Kelliher said. “It's a bit of a coordination effort… and they produce great baseball games.”
Kelliher also shared a community anecdote about the welcoming atmosphere for visitors. “I ran into one of the player's fathers… he said, this is the most incredible town, he's like, everyone's friendly, people just walk up to you and talk to you… well, that's Nebraska, we're friendly,” he said.
Officials say the team’s presence aligns with city goals to attract visitors, generate revenue, and provide family-friendly recreation. Kelliher encouraged residents to attend games, noting the team’s contribution to both community engagement and local baseball improvements.
