Jim F. Porter age 82 of Broken Bow passed away on July 23, 2024 at the Bryan East Hospital in Lincoln.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at 10:30 AM at the Broken Bow Cemetery in Broken Bow with Pastor Steve Collins officiating. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 30th from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM at Govier Brothers Mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the family.
Jimmy Franklin Porter was born on January 10, 1942, at Arnold, NE to George and Ruby (Swisher) Porter. Jim grew up in Arnold, then moved to the family farm southeast of Arnold. Jim attended school in Arnold and graduated from Arnold High School. Jim’s family were faithful members of the Nazarene Church in Arnold. A story Jim liked to tell about his growing up, they had a dog that was out fixing fence with them one day. His father was digging a posthole and the dog started barking and carrying on. The dog was barking at a rattlesnake that was coiled up and ready to strike his father George.
After graduating from high school, Jim went to work on ranches in the Sandhills of Nebraska.
Jim was married to Roma Giddings on July 3, 1964. They made their home in Broken Bow. Jim worked at Becton-Dickinson in Broken Bow and Monroe’s in Cozad. He later took a job at the Custer School in Broken Bow as the school custodian. Here he was known as “Jiminy Cricket”. He enjoyed the staff, the teachers, and the students. In 2008 Jim had to have valve replacement surgery. Jim retired shortly after that.
Jim enjoyed fishing and Country Music.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, sister Vivian Ditch, three brothers Russell Porter, Alfred Porter, and Oscar Porter, and four infant siblings.
Jim is survived by his wife Roma of Broken Bow, daughter Donna Amartey of Broken Bow, son Delbert Porter of Broken Bow, three grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, sister Jo (Larry) Hickenbottom, brother Sherman (Lou) Porter of Broken Bow, and many nieces and nephews.
