No injuries, hazmat issues after train derails near Gothenburg

DAWSON COUNTY—Authorities are investigating the cause of a train derailment near Gothenburg.

At about 1:45 a.m. CST Tuesday, approximately 31 Union Pacific train cars carrying coal derailed in Gothenburg, according to Union Pacific spokesperson Robynn Tyvser. No one was injured and there are no hazmat issues.

Cleanup has begun, with heavy equipment on site. One of the three mainline tracks near the derailment site reopened to train traffic at about 8 a.m.

A Union Pacific Train derailed east of Gothenburg just after midnight.

According to social media reports from witnesses in Gothenburg, around a dozen cars are off the track. 

Union Pacific Railroad officials along with local law enforcement were at the derailment Tuesday morning preparing for cleanup.
