
Ona M. Wenig, 90 of Kearney passed away Friday, June 19, 2020 at her home.
Ona Mae Wenig was born April 13, 1930 in Dawson, NE to Jesse and Edna (Etter) Spurgin. She graduated from Dawson High School in 1948 and attended business school in Omaha.
She married the late Thomas Wenig on December 29, 1948 in Falls City, NE. They lived in Iowa, South Carolina and Florida before moving back to Nebraska in 1968, working with Southern Baptist Convention Churches. She and her husband were commissioned as home missionaries of the Southern Baptist Convention in 1975. They served in western Nebraska until the time of their retirement in 1994, making their home and business office in Kearney.
She was a member of First Baptist Church at the time of her death. She was a long-time member and volunteer of the Kearney Chapter of the United Ostomy Association. Ona enjoyed sewing, traveling and spending time with her family.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Christy Clarke and Camilla Wenig of Kearney; sons, Michael Wenig of Omaha and Joseph Wenig of Lafayette, IN; sisters, Norma Alfard of Fayetteville, AR, Cheryle Weir of Wilmington, N.C. and Karen Eickhoff of Lincoln; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; son-in-law, William H. Clarke; daughters-in-law, Sharon Wenig; along with several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers, Kenneth Spurgin, Arthur Spurgin and Larry Spurgin; sister, Helen Martinosky; two infant grandsons; a great-grandson; and a great-granddaughter.
She chose to donate her body to the Nebraska State Anatomical Board for medical education and scientific research. A memorial service will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 26, 2020 at the First Baptist Church in Kearney. The Pastor Sean Dougherty will officiate.
