Kearney, Neb. – Nebraska Kearney head women's basketball coach Drew Johnson recently signed a contract extension that'll keep him in charge of the Loper program through March 31, 2029.

"We are extremely proud of what Drew has accomplished in leading our team. He has consistently maintained a model of excellence while guiding the team to three straight post-season appearances," said UNK Athletic Director Dr. Marc. Bauer. "Drew is committed to developing his players on and off the court. We are very fortunate to have Drew at the helm, and we could not be more excited about the future of this program."

Johnson has led UNK the past three seasons, going 54-36 (.600-win pct.). That includes a 33-27 mark in MIAA regular season play, three MIAA tournament appearances in Kansas City and two seasons of at least 19 wins.

"The University Nebraska Kearney is a special place! I am extremely excited to be able to continue to lead the women's basketball program into the future," said Johnson.

Five Lopers have been named All-MIAA over the past three seasons, including record-breaking point guard Jillian Aschofff and 2026 MIAA Freshman of the Year Myleigh Weers. In the classroom, UNK typically maintains well over a 3.50 GPA with six different players qualifying for the Academic All-District team.

In 2025-26, UNK overcame a rash of injuries to finish strong and qualify for the MIAA Tournament. The Lopers won at No. 25 Pittsburg State and No. 8 Fort Hays State to close out the regular season; they beat No. 20 Texas-Tyler to start the year. Additionally, Aschoff became UNK's all-time leader in assists with Weers being one of D2's top freshmen.

"You can feel the energy of the program. The foundation had been laid with a culture of caring for each other on and off the floor, competing every single day, and striving for growth. I look forward to leading the Lopers for many years to come," said Johnson.

Johnson and his staff – wife Nicole Ohlde-Johnson and Aschoff – welcome five freshmen and a transfer for the upcoming 2026-27 season.
