COZAD, Neb. — The community of Cozad is grappling with shock and sorrow today, following confirmation of a homicide in rural Dawson County.
The Nebraska State Patrol announced on social media that it is actively investigating the incident, though few details have been released.
“There is no danger to the public,” the patrol said in a statement. “Additional information will be provided when possible.”
Cozad Community Schools acknowledged the tragedy in a message to families and staff, saying district leaders had been “made aware of a tragic situation that will deeply affect our Cozad community.”
“Our thoughts are with all those impacted during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement said.
To support grieving students and staff, Cozad Middle School opened its doors Saturday afternoon. School counselors and staff were present to offer support.
Despite the somber mood, the Cozad High School graduation ceremony remains scheduled for 4 p.m.
As of Saturday afternoon, authorities had not released the identity of the victim or any potential suspect information.
