Anita was the ninth child born to Christian and Anna (Schurr) Gengenbach in Grant, NE, on October 27, 1935. She was baptized on December 29, 1935, and confirmed her Christian faith on June 5, 1949, both at Zion Lutheran Church in Grant, NE. She attended country school in Perkins County and graduated from Grant High School in 1952. Following graduation, Anita worked at First National Bank in Grant, and then attended Kearney State Teacher’s College for one year.

She enjoyed gardening, reading, and cooking, and she was known for making roast and potatoes for almost every Sunday noon meal. Some of her truest joys came from supporting her three grandchildren, attending their various competitions, concerts, 4-H livestock shows, and other activities over the years.
Anita was a faithful member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, southeast of Ogallala, where she served as a Sunday School Teacher and a Women’s Bible Study leader, and was active in the Dorcas Ladies Aid/Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. Anita served in several leadership positions for the LWML at the local, Zone, and District levels over the years. Anita had a great love of music and served as a church organist for decades.
Anita will be remembered by those who knew and loved her for her love of songbirds (especially cardinals), for the hundreds of doilies she crocheted, and for her love of chocolate.
