Nellie Gentry passed away on July 22, 2022 in North Platte at Centennial Park Retirement Village. She was born June 10, 1926 in Brownlee, NE to Catherine (Beers) and John Galligher. Nellie was the youngest of 9 children. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and was baptized in 1956.
Nellie married Edwin Gentry on December 22, 1945 and to this union 4 children were born. During her life she worked at Russell Stover’s Candy in Omaha and operated a café in Gordon, NE called the Sugar and Spice Café.
After moving to Valentine, she worked at the Corner Bar for the Van Horns and other different owners. Nellie also cooked at the Buttercup Café, and cooked and waitressed at the Home Café. She later went to work at Henderson’s IGA for years until her health declined. Five years ago, Nellie moved to North Platte and lived in the Centennial Park Retirement Village where she passed away.
Nellie’s loves were her grandchildren and cooking cookies and pies for them. She also loved to sew, making garments and ponchos, and especially loved to do mending for people.
She leaves behind her daughter, Sandy (Earl) Sayer; grandchildren, Scott (Pam) and Patty (Jeremy); great grandchildren, Gentrie, Madison, James & Jarrett, Chris, Neeley, Brooke, Hannah & Harry; great great grandchildren, Charolette & Carter.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; sons, John, Harry, and Jim. Also preceding her in death were her brothers, Ryvers, Lewis, Marshall, John and Lawrence, sisters, Gretchen, Ellen, Mary and Bess and her beloved dog Shelby.
Graveside service for Nellie Gentry, age 96 of Valentine will be held on Wednesday, July 27, 2022 at 10:00 AM at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Valentine. Visitation will be on Tuesday, July 26, 2022, starting at noon at Sandoz Chapel of the Pines in Valentine. Mrs. Gentry passed away on July 22 in North Platte, NE.
