
Florence Elizabeth Uerling, a longtime resident of Indianola, passed away Sunday evening, October 16, 2022 at the Highland Park Retirement Community in McCook. She was 95 years of age. Florence was born on the family farm in Frontier County, Nebraska on September 20, 1927, to Clarence and Ester (Hanthorn) Sughroue. She graduated from Indianola High School in 1945. Florence taught at a country school in Frontier County after graduating from high school.
On June 9, 1948, she married Joseph J. “Jerry” Uerling at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola, Nebraska. They made their home in Indianola, where they raised their five children. Florence also helped in the family business of Uerling Locker for many years. She enjoyed hunting with her husband and traveling with the Good Sam’s Club, after their retirement.
Florence was a member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church and the Altar Society, the Indianola American Legion Auxiliary, Fireman’s Auxiliary, and the Indianola Historical Society.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Ester Sughroue; brothers, Kenneth Sughroue, Stanley Sughroue, and Clarence “Babe” Sughroue; sisters, Helen Helm, Doris Castelli, and Loretta Belknap.
Survivors include her husband, Jerry Uerling of McCook; son, Nicholas Uerling and wife, Sandra, of Oaks, North Dakota; daughter, Jane Newberry and husband, Paul, of Indianola; daughter, Joellyn Davidson and husband, Tom, of Indianola; daughter, Lisa Chester of Garden City, Kansas; daughter, Tracy Ruggles and husband, Rick of McCook; sister-in-law, Ruth Sughroue of Indianola; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and loved ones.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 19, 2022 from 10AM-7PM at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook. The family will be present to greet friends from 5pm-7pm.
A rosary will be recited at 7PM, Wednesday evening, October 19, 2022 at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30AM, Thursday morning, October 20, 2022 at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola with Father Michael Houlihan and Father Dale Allder celebrating. Interment will follow services in St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Indianola.
