Omaha, Neb. -- Honoring seven students prior to the match, the Creighton Men's Soccer team delivered the gift each player wanted with a 3-1 win over Yale on Sunday, September 13. The win pushed Creighton to 6-0-3, while Yale fell to 1-4-0.
The Bluejays raced out to a 3-0 lead with goals from sophomore Ayden Kokoszka in the 43rd minute, freshman Carter Derksen in the 54th minute and senior Matthew Reed in the 83rd minute.
Facing a packed box that saw the Bulldogs pack as many as eight defenders inside the goal box in the opening frame, Creighton broke through as Reed threaded a pass to senior Andrija Savic for a shot along the right side that was blocked. Savic gathered and found Kokoszka for the first goal of the game with 42:44 on the clock.
The Jays' second tally was the first of the season for Derksen, teaming with fellow freshman Jordan Igwenma to scored from the right side of the box.
Reed's goal came on a penalty kick late in the match, giving the Bluejay captain a goal in six consecutive matches.
Yale found the back of the net in the 88th minute (87:35 as Ryder Mills scored off a pass from Sven Meacham.
The Bluejays outshot the Bulldogs 16-9 and held a decisive edge on time of possession.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Friday, September 18 as the Bluejays open BIG EAST action against Providence in Morrison Stadium at 7:30 pm.
NOTES: Prior to the match the Bluejays honored their three fifth-year players (Clayton Brooks, Allan Juarez and Amari Thompson) as well as seniors Diego Ferruzzi, Edward Morales, Reed and Savic.
