LINCOLN – The Nebraska Public Service Commission (PSC) has reached an agreement reinstating Hansen-Mueller Co.’s grain dealer license and requiring the company to resolve its debts with Nebraska farmers. The Commission voted Tuesday to approve the agreement protecting Nebraska’s grain community.

Hansen-Mueller was suspended from doing business as a grain dealer in Nebraska on Oct. 24, following a PSC Grain Department investigation into complaints that the company failed to pay multiple farmers. Since that action, the company has worked closely with PSC staff to address the financial concerns and provide safeguards for Nebraska grain producers and sellers.

“Our decision today balances the public interest with the opportunity for Hansen-Mueller to correct previous concerns,” said Commission Chair Tim Schram, District 3. “Our top priority was making sure these debts were paid during this crucial time in the harvest season, and we’re pleased that the company has already begun issuing the outstanding funds.”

Under terms of the agreement, Hansen-Mueller must:

• Immediately fulfill all outstanding payment obligations to Nebraska grain producers;

• Fulfill all outstanding payment obligations to Nebraska grain dealers and warehouses by Feb. 27, 2026; and

• Remain in compliance with all standard requirements for a Nebraska grain dealer license.

The agreement means the PSC will dismiss its October complaint and will not assess civil penalties against the company.

“This is a positive outcome and provides the oversight necessary to ensure Nebraska’s grain community is protected,” said Commission Vice Chair Kevin Stocker, District 5. “The Commission will continue to demand accountability and monitor the company’s compliance with this agreement.”

Hansen-Mueller began issuing some outstanding payments electronically and via mailed checks the week of Oct. 27. The PSC encourages any producers who have not received their expected payment from Hansen-Mueller within the next two weeks to contact the Grain Department at (402) 471-0222 or psc.grain@nebraska.gov.

Note: The agreement does not apply to some producers and sellers, such as those who negotiated deferred payment or “price later” contracts with Hansen-Mueller. However, anyone who has done business with Hansen-Meuller, whether before or during the suspension period, may contact the Grain Department for guidance, or to report concerns.

The PSC encourages producers and sellers to always be vigilant in business dealings and to work with Nebraska-licensed grain dealers and warehouses.

PSC Approves Agreement to Reinstate Hansen-Mueller Grain Dealer License

Scottsbluff, Neb. _ The annual AgSplosion Field Day welcomed 190 second graders on Tuesday, October 14, to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln at the Panhandle Research Extension and Education Center in Scottsbluff. The 4-H Ag Literacy event rotated the students through eight stations to learn more about agriculture in their surrounding communities.&nbsp;

“We teach second graders about agriculture, specifically within the Panhandle,” said Audra Brown, Nebraska 4-H Extension Assistant. “The students learn about agricultural commodities within the Panhandle, from beans to corn, and beef to dairy cattle. They are exposed to what is being produced in agriculture right here in their backyard.”

The event was held in early October across the Nebraska Panhandle. Elementary schools from Bridgeport, Chadron, Chappell, Hemingford, Mitchell, Minatare, Morrill, and Scottsbluff participated in field days in their areas. A 4-H team was created from extension assistants in the surrounding counties. They created a schedule, contacted schools, and then came together to help staff the stations at each field day to ensure a successful event.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The stations included: beef, dairy, dry beans, potatoes, wheat, and their many products; corn, and the Nebraska Corn Board; and ag technology used by producers. The swine session, which explained commercial swine operations, was led by Brown.&nbsp;

“They really enjoy looking at the model swine barn - the comment I hear the most is ‘wow that's a lot of pigs in there!’ Having a physical model helps them to better understand what a farm looks like,” she said. The students were surprised to learn that pig heart valves can be used to replace damaged or diseased heart valves in humans, which function in much the same way. The students also learned about by-products that come from swine, such as chewing gum, crayons, and drumheads.

Sponsors this year included: Corn Board Grant, Morrill County Farm Bureau, Nebraska Dry Bean &amp; Lentil Commission, Oshkosh Heifer Development (donating dairy station supplies), Scotts Bluff County Farm Bureau, and Walthers Farms (donating the potato chips).

CURTIS, Neb. — Students from the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture (NCTA) in Curtis gained firsthand insight into Nebraska’s potato and crop production systems during an agronomy field trip to Imperial and Grant, Nebraska. The day’s itinerary included a visit to Frenchman Valley Produce, a whole (baked) potato producer, followed by a tour of Frenchman Valley Cooperative, a regional leader in agronomy services, grain, energy, and feed.

Dr. Brad Ramsdale, Professor of Agronomy at NCTA, facilitated the educational tour connecting classroom learning to real-world agricultural systems and technology. “Seeing how crops move from the field to the market and understanding the complex logistics in between is one of the best ways to prepare our students for Nebraska’s workforce,” Ramsdale said. “Tours like this help bridge that connection between what they learn on campus and what employers need in the industry.”

At Frenchman Valley Produce, students followed the post-harvest process from potato storage and sorting to packaging and shipping. The company specializes in high-quality whole potatoes destined for the baking and restaurant market. The group observed automated grading systems, handling technology, and food safety measures, gaining perspective on how agricultural science supports both efficiency and product quality.

Agronomy in Action at Frenchman Valley Cooperative

In nearby Grant, students toured Frenchman Valley Cooperative’s agronomy and fertilizer facilities, where managers demonstrated blending and delivery systems, explained custom application processes, and discussed the cooperative’s role in supporting area producers through precision agriculture and input management. Students also walked test plots to observe early-season wheat and cover crop establishment, linking field observations with coursework in crop science and soil fertility.

Connecting Students with Nebraska’s Ag Industry

NCTA’s agronomy program emphasizes hands-on learning, small class sizes, and direct connections to employers across the state. The trip reinforced NCTA’s mission of preparing students for immediate entry into Nebraska’s agricultural workforce and providing opportunities to explore diverse career paths in crop consulting, precision ag, and production management.

“These kinds of experiences not only expand students’ technical knowledge but also their professional network,” Ramsdale noted. “Our goal is for every NCTA student to graduate with the confidence and experience to contribute on day one—whether that’s in the field, the lab, or the industrial site.”

NCTA Farm Bureau Club Explores Frenchman Valley’s Role in Nebraska Agriculture

LINCOLN, Nebraska&nbsp;– Students and instructors from 39 high schools met near Wahoo to compete in State Land Judging Oct. 22, 2025. The Lower Platte North Natural Resources District (NRD) hosted this year’s competition.

With sunny skies and calm conditions, students judged at the Lake Wanahoo Recreation Area. The site provided a good variety of soil parent materials for the students to see including loess, glacial till, clay loam, and silty clay.

“It’s imperative we get more young people outdoors learning about Nebraska through hands-on activities,” said Sydney Abbott, Lower Platte North NRD education coordinator. “This contest is an amazing opportunity for students to learn about the land they call home and make real-world natural resources management decisions that prepare them for a future career. From everyone at the Lower Platte North NRD, we congratulate the students who participated in land judging and especially those who qualified for the state contest.”

Land Judging is a high school competition that challenges students to gain a better understanding of soil structure and land evaluation. Teams consist of four students from the same FFA chapter, and a few individuals who qualified separate from a team. Each participant learns how to recognize the physical features of the soil, determine land capability for crop production, and evaluate management practices needed for proper stewardship.

During the competition, students judge four soil pits using an evaluation card to make assessments on: soil depth, surface texture, permeability, slope, thickness of surface and erosion. The evaluation card is scored to determine overall placements for individuals and the team. To compete in the state contest, teams advance from one of the seven regional competitions hosted across the state in October.

2025 State Land Judging Competition Challenges Youth near Wahoo

The Nebraska Women in Agriculture program, in partnership with the Center for Agricultural Profitability at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, announced the launch of a new online course, “LLCs for Nebraska Farms and Ranches.” The program is designed to help farm and ranch families make informed decisions about whether an LLC is the right structure for their business and avoid costly mistakes.&nbsp;

“Whether you're exploring LLCs as a new business structure for your farm or ranch or looking to better manage your existing LLC, this course offers practical guidance tailored to the unique needs of Nebraska producers,” said Jessica Groskopf, director of the Nebraska Women in Agriculture program.

The course includes short video interviews with attorneys, accountants and ag professionals, as well as checklists, worksheets and links to podcasts and articles that address specialized topics.

The cost for the course is $150 per person. Participants will have access to the course for 90 days from the date of enrollment.

LINCOLN, NEB. –&nbsp;Nebraska Farm Bureau (NEFB) sent a letter to Nebraska’s Congressional delegation urging support for key policy initiatives to address the mounting economic pressures facing Nebraska farmers and ranchers. The letter also calls for support of a comprehensive aid package.

“Nebraska farm and ranch families remain deeply dedicated to hard work and are determined to weather the current economic storm as we always have, with perseverance,” said Mark McHargue, president of Nebraska Farm Bureau. “But today’s economic headwinds have largely been created by government policy, and that requires a government response.”

The letter outlines several long-standing Farm Bureau policy priorities that could help alleviate economic strain, including:

While these policy measures are essential for long-term stability, McHargue emphasized that immediate assistance is also needed to keep farm families afloat.

“We support authorization of a ‘bridge’ payment to farmers before the end of 2025,” McHargue said. “These payments must be robust enough to address sector-wide gaps and provide meaningful support as the federal government works to recalibrate trade strategies, stabilize prices, and strengthen key market relationships.

”McHargue noted that Nebraska farmers prefer to rely on the marketplace rather than government assistance. “We do not make this ask lightly and understand that continuous ad hoc assistance to U.S. farmers is not sustainable. But when poor economic conditions are in part caused by government policies and global pressures, it becomes the responsibility of the federal government to respond,” said McHargue.

NEFB is calling on Nebraska’s Congressional delegation to support these measures to provide both short-term relief and long-term policy solutions that will restore economic stability to the state’s agricultural sector.

Nebraska Farm Bureau Calls for Strategic Policy Changes and Immediate Relief to Stabilize Agriculture

Scottsbluff, Neb. — The annual Water Education for Tomorrow (WET) event welcomed more than 300 fifth-graders Oct. 7-8 to the North Platte Natural Resources District (NPNRD) Campus in Scottsbluff. The two-day event featured nine stations where fifth graders rotated to learn about water and its many aspects through educational talks and hands-on activities. The event is a collaboration between the Educational Service Unit (ESU) 13 and the NPNRD.&nbsp;

“It’s just a chance for area 5th-grade students to come and learn about an important natural resource, ‘water,’ from experts from around the area,” said Dave Griess, ESU 13 professional learning coordinator. The event is a team effort as both the NPNRD and ESU 13 go over evaluations and tweak aspects of the event. They develop nine different stations and get presenters who are very informative and hands-on. “I think the kids love to learn about science, social studies, and natural resources, in different ways than in the classroom.”

Among the returning stations was “Water Safety,” run by the Scottsbluff Rural Fire Department.&nbsp;

“We’re telling them about fire and water safety,” said Carissa Schank-Grubbs, Scottsbluff Rural Fire Department fire chief. “They go to the pool, and go to the lake, and we do have lots of bodies of water around here, and it’s important for kids to know about life jackets and how to use them.” The highlight for the students was at the end of the session, when they would get to spray the fire department's firehose.&nbsp;

Each station had something the students enjoyed and dealt with water. “We have a fantastic campus where we can have nine different stations and 200 kids all spread out. The topic also fits well with our purpose, water resources,” said Kyle Ann Hopkins, NPNRD data management and outreach coordinator.&nbsp;

Many of the children note their favorite part involves the animals the Riverside Discovery Zoo brings out to the event. This year, a short-tailed python visited with the students on Tuesday. The presenter explained to the students how water can make it easier or harder for snakes to burrow in the ground, where they build homes or wait to attack prey.&nbsp;

“It’s a fun field trip. So interactive, hands-on, and an enhancement for science time,” said Rebecca Wenger, fifth-grade teacher at Lincoln Heights. “They like to talk about their favorite station, and later on in the year, they remember the interaction here and how it applies to their textbook learning.”

Kearney, Ne - Mitch Rippe, Nebraska Beef Council Director of Nutrition and Education, has been busy connecting the worlds of agriculture and dietetics through two impactful learning experiences for dietetic interns from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and the University of Nebraska Medical Center.&nbsp;

In an effort to bridge the gap between dietetic programs and the agricultural industry, the Nebraska Beef Council recently hosted a comprehensive farm tour offering future dietitians’ firsthand exposure to the beef production cycle.&nbsp;

Stops included Lienetics Ranch, Weber &amp; Sons Co., and McLean Beef’s retail and processing facility, where students learned about sustainability, animal care, and food safety. Nebraska Beef Council Board Member Mark Goes led an interactive meat science session utilizing carcasses donated from the Cattlemen’s Ball, including Angus, Hereford, Beef x Dairy, and Piedmontese breeds. Students used tools and data to calculate ribeye area and quality grade, connecting classroom knowledge to real-world applications.&nbsp;

UNMC intern Kennedy Jones reflected on the experience:&nbsp;

“Seeing how feed is designed to promote healthy growth helped me better understand the link between animal nutrition and the quality of beef people eat. Watching the steps of portioning, packaging, and labeling made me think differently about food safety. It made food systems feel much more personal.”&nbsp;

Media &amp; Communications Workshop&nbsp;

Following the tour, the Nebraska Beef Council also hosted a Media and Communications Workshop, designed to help dietetic interns strengthen their communication skills and build confidence when sharing nutrition information with the public. Sessions were led by expert partners, including Hannah Guenther, Food, Nutrition, and Health Extension Educator with Nebraska Extension, who led Communicating Health with Impact: Tailoring Health Messages for Every Community, and Melissa Joy Dobbins, MS, RDN, CDCES, host of the nationally recognized Sound Bites® Podcast, who presented Messaging, Bridging, and Beyond. These sessions equipped interns with tools for message consistency, consumer trust, and effectively navigating complex food conversations.

For livestock producers, managing risk often means using more than one tool. Three insurance programs Pasture, Rangeland, and Forage (PRF); Annual Forage (AF); and Livestock Risk Protection (LRP) can be good options to complement each other to protect both feed supply and livestock value.

PRF insurance helps offset the financial impact of below-average rainfall during the growing season. It’s based on a rainfall index, not actual forage yield, but it can provide timely payments when drought limits grazing potential.

Annual Forage insurance covers forage crops planted annually for feed or grazing, such as small grains or cover crops. It offers protection against precipitation shortfalls during specific growing seasons, making it especially useful for diversified or integrated systems.

Livestock Risk Protection provides price protection for cattle, and swine. It works much like a put option allowing producers to set a price floor for their livestock while still benefiting if markets improve.

Used together, these tools create a more complete risk management plan: PRF and AF help stabilize feed resources, while LRP protects market value. The goal isn’t to eliminate risk entirely but to manage it in a way that improves cash flow and business stability through variable weather and market cycles.

Producers can work with an insurance agent familiar with RMA programs to find the right mix for their operation and budget.

NeFU Says Cooperative Month Reminds Us of the Many Benefits Coops Provide

Fresh forage options in the fall often come with strings attached. &nbsp;While the potential for high quality grazing is present, knowing the risks that may come along is critical to make the most out of these forage resources.

The two main drivers of risks for fall grazing come from the environment, freezing temperatures and drought. Let’s look at drought first.

When moisture is lacking, plant growth is slowed. &nbsp;This is a major obstacle for establishing fall forages but can cause problems with already growing plants too. &nbsp;Cover or forage crops planted during the summer may begin accumulating nitrates as dry weather slows growth. &nbsp;This is especially true for forages that planted into an already fertilized row crop that was hailed out.

Cold weather can be a cause for concern too. &nbsp;As temperatures drop, growth slows, and nitrates can build up again. &nbsp;When plant cells freeze, they can burst, making nutrients more readily available. &nbsp;In high quality forages, this can lead to bloat, especially early in the morning when forage moisture is highest.

In sorghum species including sudans, ruptured cells due to freezing is a bit more serious. &nbsp;This damage releases prussic acid a cyanide compound which can be deadly to livestock if consumed in high enough quantities. &nbsp;While it can dissipate out in 5-7 days, each time more of the plant is damaged by frost, prussic acid is released. &nbsp;

Fall forages can be a great grazing opportunity, but need to be managed carefully to be safe. &nbsp;Watch for nitrates during dry weather and nitrates, bloat, and prussic acid in sorghum species as temperatures drop to get the most out of your fall grazing.

 </figure>By: Ben BeckmanFresh forage options in the fall often come with strings attached. &nbsp;While the potential for high quality grazing is present, knowing the risks that may come along is critical to make the most out of these forage resources.The two main drivers of risks for fall grazing come from the environment, freezing temperatures and drought. Let’s look at drought first.When moisture is lacking, plant growth is slowed. &nbsp;This is a major obstacle for establishing fall forages but can cause problems with already growing plants too. &nbsp;Cover or forage crops planted during the summer may begin accumulating nitrates as dry weather slows growth. &nbsp;This is especially true for forages that planted into an already fertilized row crop that was hailed out.Cold weather can be a cause for concern too. &nbsp;As temperatures drop, growth slows, and nitrates can build up again. &nbsp;When plant cells freeze, they can burst, making nutrients more readily available. &nbsp;In high quality forages, this can lead to bloat, especially early in the morning when forage moisture is highest.In sorghum species including sudans, ruptured cells due to freezing is a bit more serious. &nbsp;This damage releases prussic acid a cyanide compound which can be deadly to livestock if consumed in high enough quantities. &nbsp;While it can dissipate out in 5-7 days, each time more of the plant is damaged by frost, prussic acid is released. &nbsp;Fall forages can be a great grazing opportunity, but need to be managed carefully to be safe. &nbsp;Watch for nitrates during dry weather and nitrates, bloat, and prussic acid in sorghum species as temperatures drop to get the most out of your fall grazing.

The Oct. 9 sale featured standout performances across multiple weight divisions, highlighted by 3-, 4-, 6-, and 7-weight steers reaching unprecedented prices.

In the 4-weight division, 17 head averaging 406 pounds sold for $595 per hundredweight, and 144 head at 430 pounds brought $587. Both sales now rank among the top 10 all-time nationally, while accounting for nine of the 10 highest 4-weight sales in Ogallala barn history.

The market remained strong across middle-weight classes, with new records set for every 5- and 6-weight sale. A new barn record was also established in the 7-weight category, where 60 head averaging 778 pounds sold for $412.50.

The 8-weight division followed suit, as 58 head at 864 pounds brought $382, marking the second-highest price for that class in barn history.

In lighter weights, the barn surpassed the $600 mark for the first time, with 47 head at 368 pounds selling for $615 and 22 head at 397 pounds for $605 — the two highest 3-weight prices ever recorded at Ogallala.

It was a record-setting day from start to finish, reinforcing Ogallala Livestock Auction’s position among the top-performing sale barns in the nation.

Stapleton grad earns Angus Beef Scholarship

LINCOLN, Neb. — Photographers across Nebraska have a chance to showcase the state’s natural beauty in the 2025 Nebraskaland Magazine Photo Contest, now open for submissions through October 31.

The contest invites photographers of all skill levels to submit their best shots taken in Nebraska. Entries are accepted in four categories: Wildlife, Scenic, Recreation, and Macro. All photographs must be original and captured within the state.

Capture Nebraska’s Beauty: Nebraskaland Magazine Photo Contest Now Open

LINCOLN, Neb. (Oct. 2, 2025) – Students with a passion for entrepreneurship have a new chance to turn their ideas into action through the Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.

Applications are now open for scholarships for the 2026–27 academic year. The awards are available to both incoming and current students in UNL’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources who have experience in FFA or 4-H.

Since its launch in 2012, the Engler program has invested more than $2 million in scholarships and resources to support young entrepreneurs and innovators. Scholarship Opportunity for Aspiring Entrepreneurs Through Engler Program

NORTH PLATTE – Ten-year-old Kassidy Frick may only be in her second year of 4-H, but she’s already diving into projects that showcase her curiosity and love for animals.

Frick, a Lincoln County 4-H’er, has explored cake decorating, cookie jars, wildlife conservation, and shooting sports, with archery quickly becoming her favorite. “It really helps build my shoulder muscle,” she said with a laugh. “Archery is probably my favorite so far.”

Her enthusiasm extends beyond the range. With help from her family, Frick took on a wildlife conservation project, tracking deer along the Platte River and learning how to make plaster molds of their footprints. The hands-on project earned her special recognition and a rainbow ribbon at the Nebraska State Fair.

“One mistake in this project and the whole thing is ruined,” Frick explained. “You have to get the right measurement of water or it won’t set. But I was really excited when I saw my ribbon at State.”

For Extension Educator Caitlyn Jacobson, who works with 4-H in Lincoln, Logan and McPherson Counties, seeing youth like Frick embrace new opportunities is what the program is all about.

“4-H is about finding your spark,” Jacobson said. “Kids try different projects—sometimes they love them, sometimes they don’t. But through that exploration, they figure out what they’re passionate about.”

Frick said she’s already thinking about what’s next. She and her mom are considering showing sheep and goats, although she admits goats may be more her dream than her mother’s. “I love every animal equally,” Frick said.

Jacobson noted that fall is a key time for families to think about joining 4-H. With the year-end celebration on October 12 and the awards banquet just around the corner, enrollment for the new year begins again in late October.

“This is my favorite time of year,” Jacobson said. “We get to celebrate what our 4-H’ers accomplished at the county and state levels, and then we look ahead. There really is something in 4-H for everyone.”

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Corn Growers Association (NeCGA) collected more than 700 signatures during this year’s Husker Harvest Days, showing strong support for policy priorities critical to corn growers across the state.

The signatures back initiatives such as year-round, nationwide access to E-15 fuel, the advancement of key trade agreements and updates to Farm Bill provisions—issues NeCGA says are especially urgent given the industry’s current economic challenges.

Kaitlin Taylor, NeCGA’s director of public policy, delivered the petitions directly to Nebraska’s congressional offices in Washington, D.C. She also met with staff at the U.S. Department of Agriculture and congressional committees as part of a broader advocacy fly-in.

“The number of signatures we collected shows how united our growers are around these priorities,” said Jan tenBensel, a Cambridge farmer and NeCGA board member who joined the meetings in Washington. “Farmers need action on E-15, trade and the Farm Bill, and they are making their voices heard.”

NeCGA says it will continue working with federal lawmakers to ensure Nebraska corn growers’ concerns remain front and center.

Nebraska Corn Growers Deliver 700+ Signatures to Congress, Urging Action on E-15, Trade and Farm Bill

LINCOLN, Neb. — Ten Nebraska Farmers Union (NeFU) members were part of the over 250 National Farmers Union (NFU) Fall Fly-In participants that walked the halls of Congress September 7-10. The annual NFU Fall Fly-In focused on the need for Congress to pass an improved and updated Farm Bill that is due to expire September 30. Both NeFU teams met with the Nebraska Congressional Delegation as well as Congressional members from five other states. In addition, Bill Armbrust of Elkhorn participated in a White House briefing and a listening session with the Antitrust Division of the Justice Department.

NeFU President John Hansen of Lincoln said “Our participants did a good job of sharing their concerns about the sagging farm economy and the need for Congress to not kick the Farm Bill down the road a record fourth time. We thought our meetings with members of the&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;delegation were very productive, and our messages were well received. We pointed out that only four of the twelve Titles of the 2018 Farm Bill were touched by Budget Reconciliation, and agriculture needs all twelve titles to be updated and improved.”

In a discussion with USDA Chief Economist Seth Miller, Keith Dittrich of Tilden pictured to the left, established that USDA’s predicted season average market prices for both corn and soybeans were well below USDA’s estimated costs of production. USDA estimated costs of production for corn was $4.80 per bushel and soybeans at $11.80 per bushel.&nbsp; USDA estimated season average market prices for corn is $3.90 per bushel and soybeans $10.10 per bushel. Keith pointed out that farmers were losing 90 cents per bushel on their corn and $1.70 per bushel on their soybeans.

John Hansen pointed out that China is the largest soybean importer in the world, imports more soybeans than the rest of the world combined, and was the largest buyer of U.S soybeans. Hansen said, “After the previous trade dispute over soybeans, China made massive infrastructure investments in South America. Looking forward, it is likely China will buy corn and soybeans from South America first and from the U.S. last. Because U.S. ag producers are so susceptible to trade retaliation, when there is a trade dispute, U.S. ag producers’ noses bleed first, worst, and longest.”

Hansen said “The U.S. agricultural trade balance has shifted from $20 to $30 billion positive annual ag trade surpluses in the past to historically high ag trade deficits. Fiscal year (FY) 2025 is projected to be a record setting $49.5 billion deficit. Those numbers are alarming. The 2018 Farm Bill income safety net that is supposed to help farmers survive periods of low commodity prices is in dire need of updates and improvements.”

“Family farmers and ranchers can’t wait. Farmers Union members from across the country have made it clear that they need Congress to provide support immediately to reverse the building crisis in farm country,”&nbsp;said NFU President Rob Larew.”

The annual NFU Fall Fly-In focused on the need for Congress to pass an improved and updated Farm Bill that is due to expire September 30. Both NeFU teams met with the Nebraska Congressional Delegation as well as Congressional members from five other states. In addition, Bill Armbrust of Elkhorn participated in a White House briefing and a listening session with the Antitrust Division of the Justice Department.NeFU President John Hansen of Lincoln said “Our participants did a good job of sharing their concerns about the sagging farm economy and the need for Congress to not kick the Farm Bill down the road a record fourth time. We thought our meetings with members of the&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;delegation were very productive, and our messages were well received. We pointed out that only four of the twelve Titles of the 2018 Farm Bill were touched by Budget Reconciliation, and agriculture needs all twelve titles to be updated and improved.”In a discussion with USDA Chief Economist Seth Miller, Keith Dittrich of Tilden pictured to the left, established that USDA’s predicted season average market prices for both corn and soybeans were well below USDA’s estimated costs of production. USDA estimated costs of production for corn was $4.80 per bushel and soybeans at $11.80 per bushel.&nbsp; USDA estimated season average market prices for corn is $3.90 per bushel and soybeans $10.10 per bushel. Keith pointed out that farmers were losing 90 cents per bushel on their corn and $1.70 per bushel on their soybeans.John Hansen pointed out that China is the largest soybean importer in the world, imports more soybeans than the rest of the world combined, and was the largest buyer of U.S soybeans. Hansen said, “After the previous trade dispute over soybeans, China made massive infrastructure investments in South America. Looking forward, it is likely China will buy corn and soybeans from South America first and from the U.S. last. Because U.S. ag producers are so susceptible to trade retaliation, when there is a trade dispute, U.S. ag producers’ noses bleed first, worst, and longest.”Hansen said “The U.S. agricultural trade balance has shifted from $20 to $30 billion positive annual ag trade surpluses in the past to historically high ag trade deficits. Fiscal year (FY) 2025 is projected to be a record setting $49.5 billion deficit. Those numbers are alarming. The 2018 Farm Bill income safety net that is supposed to help farmers survive periods of low commodity prices is in dire need of updates and improvements.”“Family farmers and ranchers can’t wait. NeFU Asks Congress to Update and Pass an Improved Farm Bill

The nationally coordinated, state-implemented program provides beef producers with science-based practices for raising cattle under optimum management and care.

Waechter-Mead serves as the lead educator at the Webster County Extension Services in Red Cloud. In the new role as director, she will oversee statewide training and certification for beef producers while collaborating with industry partners and Nebraska Extension specialists to promote animal health, welfare and beef quality. 

“The Beef Quality Assurance program is a cornerstone of consumer trust in beef,” Waechter-Mead said. “I’m excited to support Nebraska producers by providing tools and training that ensure cattle are raised responsibly and sustainably while maintaining the highest quality standards.” 

Nebraska is the nation’s top commercial cattle feeding state and consistently ranks near the top in cow-calf production. The state’s Beef Quality Assurance program certifies thousands of producers annually, ensuring beef raised in Nebraska meets rigorous standards for animal care and food safety. 

Waechter-Mead, who holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and master’s degree in veterinary science, has worked extensively with livestock producers through Nebraska Extension. Her expertise spans herd health, producer education and on-the-ground collaboration with ranchers and feedlot operators.

“Dr. Waechter-Mead brings a wealth of knowledge and hands-on experience to this role,” said Randy Saner, livestock systems program area leader. “Her leadership will strengthen Nebraska’s BQA program and reinforce the state’s reputation as a global leader in beef production.”

This is the first known case of HPAI in dairy cattle in Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA), in conjunction with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has confirmed the detection of a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a dairy herd in Nebraska. This is the first known case of HPAI in dairy cattle in the state. The herd is located in central Nebraska and has been quarantined.

The National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) confirmed that the strain of the virus is very similar to a strain from California. With supportive care, dairy cattle recover with little to no mortality associated with the disease.

State Veterinarian Dr. Roger Dudley encourages&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;dairy producers to follow strict biosecurity protocols and to contact their veterinarian immediately if their animals are exhibiting any symptoms of the virus.

What are the clinical signs of HPAI in dairy cattle?

HPAI symptoms in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.morningagclips.com/tag/dairy/">dairy</a>&nbsp;cattle mostly affect late-stage lactating cows. Common clinical signs of HPAI in dairy cows decrease in food consumption, clear nasal discharge, drop in milk production, tacky or loose feces, lethargy, dehydration, fever, and thicker, concentrated (colostrum-like) milk.
