Governor Jim Pillen has declared a state of emergency for several Nebraska counties as multiple wildfires continue to threaten communities and property across the state.

The emergency declaration applies to Morrill, Garden, Arthur, Keith, Lincoln, Dawson, and Frontier counties, where ongoing fires have been fueled by high winds, low humidity, and extremely dry conditions.

In announcing the proclamation, Pillen said the move will help mobilize state resources to assist local firefighting efforts.

“Today, I declared a state of emergency within Morrill, Garden, Arthur, Keith, Lincoln, Dawson, and Frontier Counties to help combat wildfires,” Pillen said.

The proclamation authorizes the Nebraska Adjutant General, who also serves as State Disaster Coordinator, to activate state emergency plans and take necessary steps to protect lives and property.

“This proclamation allows the Nebraska Adjutant General, who also serves as State Disaster Coordinator, to activate appropriate State emergency plans and take such steps as he deems necessary to meet this emergency and protect life and property in this state,” Pillen said.

Several additional response measures have also been ordered as part of the state’s wildfire response. Those actions include deploying Nebraska Department of Transportation road graders to help create fire breaks and ordering Nebraska National Guard troops to assist local firefighters.

National Guard helicopters have also been deployed to support aerial firefighting operations, while a state-led Complex Incident Management Team has been activated to coordinate the overall response.

According to the governor’s proclamation, the fires began around March 12 and have affected multiple areas across the state. Officials say the blazes have damaged or threatened both public and private property and have created challenges beyond what local governments can handle alone.

The state of emergency declaration also authorizes the use of state government and emergency management resources, including funding from the Governor’s Emergency Fund, to support firefighting and response efforts.

Emergency officials continue to urge residents in affected areas to stay alert to changing fire conditions and follow guidance from local authorities.

Governor Pillen Declares State of Emergency for Multiple Nebraska Counties Amid Wildfires

North Platte, Neb.&nbsp; — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested one person after a crash that claimed the life of another person this morning on Interstate 80 near North Platte.

At approximately 10:20 a.m., NSP received a report of a serious crash on Interstate 80 near mile marker 175. A two-vehicle crash occurred in the eastbound lanes of I-80.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a Toyota Sienna minivan was traveling eastbound on I-80 when it rear-ended a Jeep Wrangler that was also traveling eastbound. The collision caused the Jeep to roll into the south ditch. The driver of the Jeep was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Toyota went through the median, across the westbound lanes, and into the north ditch. The driver of the Toyota was transported to Great Plains Health in North Platte.

The driver of the Toyota, Jacqueline Hoggatt, 49, of Lancaster, California, has since been released from the hospital. Troopers have arrested Hoggatt for motor vehicle homicide, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Additional charges are pending. Hoggatt has been lodged in Lincoln County Jail.

The Nebraska State Patrol is conducting a full crash reconstruction investigation. The name of the deceased driver is being withheld pending the family notification process.

The Hot Sheets: March 13, 2026

Firefighters across Nebraska spent Thursday battling multiple fast-moving wildfires fueled by powerful winds, dry vegetation, and critically dangerous fire weather conditions across much of the state.

Grass fires were reported throughout the afternoon and evening in several regions including central Nebraska, the Sandhills, southeast Nebraska, and the Nebraska Panhandle. The fires prompted evacuations, road closures, and large emergency responses from fire departments, emergency managers, and volunteer crews.

One of the larger fires Thursday afternoon burned in northern Gage County near Beatrice, where flames forced the closure of U.S. Highway 77 for several hours. The fire started near West Hickory Road and was pushed rapidly across fields by strong winds, eventually jumping the highway. Several fire departments responded to the scene as crews worked to contain the blaze and protect nearby structures.

Another wildfire was reported in Jefferson County near Fairbury, where firefighters responded to a grass fire burning in rural areas near the community as strong winds helped spread flames across dry vegetation.

In central Nebraska, firefighters responded to a fast-moving grass fire in Lincoln County near Cottonwood Road and South Government Pocket Road. Strong winds helped push flames across open fields and toward rural homes, prompting evacuation orders for residents in the area as crews worked to slow the fire’s advance.

Additional fires were reported in southwest Lancaster County near Denton and Crete, where evacuation orders were issued for some residents as firefighters battled multiple grass fires burning in the area.

Further west, firefighters responded to a wildfire in the Nebraska Panhandle that spread from Morrill County toward neighboring Garden County, prompting evacuations as the fire moved across dry grassland.

Fires were also reported in parts of the Nebraska Sandhills, including a wildfire that threatened the communities of Dunning and Halsey in Blaine and Thomas counties. Dubbed the Road 203 Fire at over 5,000 acers and growing as of Thursday evening. Evacuation orders were issued for residents in the area as fire crews worked to protect structures and stop the spread of flames across the region’s grasslands.

Throughout the day, volunteer firefighters were assisted by farmers using tractors and other equipment to cut fire lines in rural areas, helping crews slow the movement of several fires.

Much of Nebraska was under Red Flag Warnings Thursday as meteorologists warned of extremely dangerous fire weather conditions across the region. A Red Flag Warning is issued when strong winds, low humidity, warm temperatures, and dry vegetation combine to create a high risk for fires to start and spread quickly.

Wind gusts across parts of Nebraska reached around 40 to 50 miles per hour Thursday, while dry grasses left from the winter months provided ample fuel for fires to spread rapidly across open land. When these conditions occur together, fires can move quickly and unpredictably, sometimes jumping roads, fire breaks, and other barriers.

Several of the fires reported across Nebraska prompted evacuations throughout the day as authorities worked to protect homes and property. Residents were temporarily evacuated in parts of Lancaster County, Lincoln County, and areas of the Sandhills near Dunning and Halsey as flames moved toward rural homes.

Officials say evacuations are often issued as a precaution during fast-moving grass fires, especially when high winds make fire behavior difficult to predict.

Authorities are urging residents to avoid outdoor burning during Red Flag Warning conditions and to take precautions that could prevent sparks from igniting dry grass. Evacuations Issued as Wildfires Burn Across Nebraska During Red Flag Conditions

New Bronze Statue Celebrates Historic Legacy and Community Spirit

GOTHENBURG, NE— The community of Gothenburg is proud to announce the dedication of a new life-sized bronze sculpture honoring the legendary Pony Express.

The statue, which depicts a rider galloping on horseback, has been installed in the scenic Ehmen Park Arboretum, further highlighting Gothenburg’s importance as a historic landmark along the famed Pony Express mail route.

Renowned Nebraska artist Linda Egle was commissioned to bring this vision to life in 2024. After more than a year and a half of dedicated work, Egle completed the sculpture in the summer of 2025, and it was delivered to its destination awaiting its finishing touches.

The project has been a community effort for more than 20 years in the making, made possible by local fundraising, generous private and corporate donations, and a grant from the Gothenburg Tourism Committee. Located adjacent to the historic Pony Express Station Museum, one of the few original stations remaining, the new sculpture further&nbsp;enriches the town’s cultural and historical significance.

The sculpture joins another bronze already in the park created by Colorado Artist George Walby earlier donated back in 2022. Both pieces pay tribute to the brave young men who risked their lives to deliver mail across the American frontier in the 1860s and will serve as a lasting tribute to their courage and commitment.

“The Pony Express is a vital part of Gothenburg’s identity,” said Matt Weiss, President of the Gothenburg Pony Express Association. “This sculpture not only honors the riders who helped unite the country during a pivotal era but also serves as an educational tool and artistic landmark for our community.”

Emergency crews were dispatched around 2 p.m. Thursday to a reported rollover crash on Highway 30 near mile marker 190, just outside Maxwell.

Scanner traffic indicated a white van had rolled over and came to rest on it's side on nearby train tracks. Dispatch advised responding units that a train was approaching the area and that they were attempting to contact Union Pacific Response Management Communication Center (RMCC).

About a minute later, dispatch reported that according to witnesses on scene, the train was stopped in time before reaching the crash site.

Further details about injuries or the cause of the crash were not immediately available. Authorities were responding to the scene Thursday afternoon.

The North Platte Police Department understands that incidents such as this may cause concern for members of our community regarding their personal safety, particularly for those who regularly utilize the South Platte River walking and bicycle trail. We want the public to know that we are committed to thoroughly investigating this incident.

While the investigation remains ongoing, we also understand that members of the community may have questions about their safety when using public spaces. At this time, Investigators have no information to indicate any ongoing or immediate threat to the public beyond this reported incident. However, the investigation remains active, and officers will continue to monitor the area as additional information becomes available.

At this time, Investigators are able to release a limited description of the suspect involved in this reported incident. The suspect is described as a white male with a darker complexion, believed to be in his 30s, wearing dark clothing. The suspect description is very limited at this time.

On the evening the report was received, officers from the North Platte Police Department responded and saturated the area with the assistance of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and the Nebraska State Patrol. Law enforcement agencies collaboratively conducted an extensive search of the riverbed and surrounding areas where the assault was reported to have occurred. During this search, a drone and a K9 unit were utilized to assist officers. No suspect was located during this extensive search.

Yesterday, Investigators with the North Platte Police Department Criminal Investigations Division processed the crime scene and again conducted an extensive search of the riverbed for potential evidence. A drone was again used to assist investigators during this search.

Today, Investigators are canvassing the area and speaking with nearby businesses and homeowners in an effort to locate potential witnesses and identify any available surveillance video that may assist with the investigation.

Investigators are asking anyone who was in the area of the South Platte River walking trail around 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, and may have seen or heard anything suspicious to come forward with any information that could assist investigators.

We also encourage businesses and homeowners along the trail who may have surveillance cameras to review their video footage and report anything suspicious that may have occurred during that time frame.

The Hot Sheets: March 12, 2026

The North Platte Public Schools Board of Education recognized students and staff, heard public input on the search for an interim superintendent, and approved administrative salary increases during its regular meeting Monday evening.

The meeting began with recognition of the district’s February Bulldogs of the Month, seniors Sami Yuing and Reagan Lampy. Yuing said he has participated in football, basketball and soccer during his time at North Platte High School and is a member of the National Honor Society. After graduation, he plans to attend the University of Nebraska–Lincoln to study nursing with the goal of becoming a certified registered nurse anesthetist. Lampy told the board she has been involved in cheer, student council, Key Club, soccer and Bulldog Productions during high school. She plans to attend the University of Nebraska–Lincoln to major in child, youth and family studies and pursue a career as a pediatric occupational therapist.

Students from Buffalo Elementary’s preschool program also spoke during a student spotlight presentation, sharing what they enjoy about preschool, including making friends, painting, playing outside and spending time with their teachers.

During the foundation report, several district employees were recognized for their contributions. At McDonald Elementary, physical education teacher and coach Braden Courtney and staff member Miss Connie were honored. North Platte High School recognized counseling secretary Teresa Schumacher and teacher Bobby Cahill. Washington Elementary recognized administrative assistant Christy Morrison and resource teacher Mrs. Blackburn. Administrators praised the staff members for their dedication to students, teamwork and positive impact across the district.

Two community members addressed the board during public comment regarding the district’s ongoing search for an interim superintendent. Kyle Nichols encouraged the board to conduct the selection process transparently and include district administrators and other stakeholders in discussions. Nichols also suggested the board select an interim superintendent to stabilize the district but delay hiring a permanent superintendent until after upcoming board elections. Shrea Agarwal also urged board members to include administrators in the interview process, saying administrators work closely with staff and students and should have a voice in selecting the district’s next leader.

Board members approved the consent agenda, which included minutes from recent meetings, several teaching contracts for the 2026–27 school year, staff resignations effective later this year and financial claims and reports.

Superintendent Dr. Damon McDonald also provided a financial update to the board, noting that state aid for North Platte Public Schools has been certified at about $2 million less than the current year. McDonald said the district will begin discussing potential budget adjustments and planning earlier than usual, with those conversations expected to begin at the board’s March 26 committee of the whole meeting. The district’s current enrollment stands at 3,357 students, with a total of 3,595 students served across district programs including preschool services.

The board also received a legislative update regarding several bills under consideration in the Nebraska Legislature, including changes to teacher retirement rules, student discipline laws and funding levels for special education reimbursement.

Board members discussed several policy items during the meeting, including proposed language regarding board member electronic communications, access to district email records and procedures for accessing security camera footage. The board also discussed the possibility of creating a Board of Education handbook to help guide new members and outline board procedures.

The board approved a 1.89 percent salary increase for administrative contracts for the 2026–27 school year. Board members said the increase mirrors the percentage negotiated in teacher contracts and will be applied consistently across all administrative positions.

Later in the meeting, the board entered closed session to review applications for the interim superintendent position with assistance from the Nebraska Association of School Boards. After returning to open session, members approved a motion authorizing the search representative to contact three applicants to schedule interviews and notify the remaining candidates of the board’s decision. Interviews are scheduled for March 24.

The board also created an ad hoc committee consisting of Joanne Lungren, Emily Garrick and Mitch Wagner to assist with organizing the interview process and identifying administrators who may participate in interviews.

In other action, the board approved revisions to two curriculum-related policies that add references to Nebraska statutes. The board also tabled action on a proposed policy update related to audio and video recording in schools to allow additional time for review.

The meeting concluded with updates on upcoming budget workshops, the interim superintendent interview schedule and future board meetings.

MPCC Business student earns perfect score

Gracie Hock, an MPCC general business freshman, scored 100% in the Microsoft Word Associate certification exam required for Angela Chittick’s Business Computer Systems class.

“In all my years, I’ve never seen anyone get a perfect score,” Chittick said. “It’s an incredible achievement.”

Students must demonstrate foundational skills in creating, formatting and managing documents including references, custom styles, forms, macros and collaboration tools to create professional-grade reports, proposals and publications.

Hock said she completed assignments in class to learn about the certification and took a couple practice tests. “I aced it, I guess,” she said. Her advice to other students preparing for the test is to study and be confident.

MPCC Business Student Earns Perfect Score

A South Dakota man was sentenced Monday in Lincoln County District Court to 15 to 20 years in prison in a methamphetamine distribution case.

Miguel Angel Pena Cervantes, 43, received the sentence from District Judge Michael Piccolo following a conviction for possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver. 

Court records show Cervantes was arrested in June after law enforcement located him with a stolen vehicle in a parking lot south of Interstate 80 Exit 177 in North Platte. The vehicle, a Chevrolet Malibu with South Dakota license plates, had been reported stolen in Fort Morgan, Colorado. 

According to the arrest affidavit, Cervantes acknowledged the vehicle was stolen when questioned by a Lincoln County sheriff’s deputy. During an inventory of the vehicle’s contents, deputies found a container with marijuana inside a duffel bag in the trunk, which led investigators to conduct a more thorough search of the car.

Cervantes initially pleaded not guilty and requested a jury trial. However, he later accepted a plea agreement in January.  </figure>A South Dakota man was sentenced Monday in Lincoln County District Court to 15 to 20 years in prison in a methamphetamine distribution case.Miguel Angel Pena Cervantes, 43, received the sentence from District Judge Michael Piccolo following a conviction for possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver. Court records show Cervantes was arrested in June after law enforcement located him with a stolen vehicle in a parking lot south of Interstate 80 Exit 177 in North Platte. The vehicle, a Chevrolet Malibu with South Dakota license plates, had been reported stolen in Fort Morgan, Colorado. According to the arrest affidavit, Cervantes acknowledged the vehicle was stolen when questioned by a Lincoln County sheriff’s deputy. During an inventory of the vehicle’s contents, deputies found a container with marijuana inside a duffel bag in the trunk, which led investigators to conduct a more thorough search of the car. North Platte Police Department Investigating Reported Sexual Assault

A North Platte man will spend up to 15 years in prison after being sentenced Monday in Lincoln County District Court.

Daniel Navarette, 36, was sentenced to a total of 15 years in prison after pleading no contest earlier this year to three counts of intentional child abuse.

District Judge Cindy Volkmer ordered Navarette to serve five years on each count, with the sentences running consecutively.

The charges stem from incidents that occurred in 2012, according to court records.

Navarette entered the no contest pleas in January as part of a plea agreement. In exchange, prosecutors dismissed about a dozen additional charges, including four counts of first-degree sexual assault of a child.

Navarette received credit for time already served while awaiting sentencing.

The case was prosecuted by the Lincoln County Attorney’s Office in North Platte.

The North Platte Public Schools Foundation continues to expand opportunities for North Platte High School students as they prepare for life after graduation.

Foundation Executive Director Terry Burchell says the organization works to support students no matter what path they choose — whether that includes college, technical careers, military service or entering the workforce.

One of the biggest ways the foundation supports students is through scholarships funded by generous donors.

Burchell said the foundation currently manages 28 scholarships totaling more than $45,000 in support for graduating seniors each year.

“Some of those scholarships are set up that they're every four years because they actually pay out every four years that students are in school,” Burchell said. “We also have some that do freshman and sophomore year, some that are totally just dedicated to a specific career choice.”

Scholarship applications opened in November and closed March 1. Foundation board members and committee members are now reviewing applications with awards expected to be announced in April.

Beyond financial support, the foundation also highlights the importance of hands-on experiences that help students explore career paths.

Local businesses partner with the high school through internship opportunities coordinated through the school’s career programs. Burchell said those partnerships give students valuable real-world experience.

“Internships can really change a life,” Burchell said.

Businesses interested in further supporting students can also partner with the foundation to establish scholarships for interns.

“We’d be happy to help them set up that scholarship,” Burchell said. “Maybe it only goes to people that have interned with that business.”

Students also have opportunities to explore careers through military visits in the high school’s Career Exploration Center, as well as job fairs and other career-focused programs.

Classroom grants funded through the foundation also provide hands-on learning experiences across the district. Programs supported through these grants include initiatives like “Take the Stage to the Students,” which introduces elementary students to theater, and the Bulldog Banter Podcast, which allows students to gain experience in media production.

Partnerships with Mid-Plains Community College also allow some students to graduate with certifications, such as becoming a certified nursing assistant, giving them valuable work experience while pursuing additional education.

Burchell said those opportunities help students graduate with more than just a diploma.

“They're able to take that out into the real world and maybe it's just a part-time job while they're in college getting a medical career or something like that,” Burchell said.

The foundation’s scholarship programs are also strongly supported by alumni and educators.

Retired educators have also provided legacy gifts that support programs across the district, including funding for the music program and projects benefiting elementary schools.

Burchell said those contributions reflect a shared commitment to helping the next generation succeed.

“It wouldn't be that we would have so many scholarships if it wasn’t for the alumni and previous educators,” Burchell said.

Listeners will hear more about those opportunities next month when a student intern from North Platte High School joins the program to share her perspective on the foundation’s work.

The Prairie Arts Center continues to expand opportunities for the community to gather, create and celebrate through events, classes and rental spaces in downtown North Platte.

Prairie Arts Center Executive Director Holly Carlini and new Events Coordinator Janee Elfeldt recently joined Allison Peck in the studio to talk about what’s happening at the arts center and what visitors can expect in the coming months.

Elfeldt said she has been with the Prairie Arts Center for only a few weeks but has already begun helping coordinate events.

“I kind of started in the middle of some events, but I’ve done a few of my own,” Janee Elfeldt said. “I had a fun one last weekend and then a few bridal showers and baby showers.”

Carlini said many people don’t realize the Prairie Arts Center offers several spaces that can be rented for private events such as weddings, graduations, showers, meetings and other gatherings.

The Marble Hall on the first floor provides a striking setting, while the textile room on the second floor offers a smaller space that can accommodate around 40 people. The ballroom upstairs can hold up to about 100 guests and also includes access to a balcony.

Rental prices vary depending on the space and how long it is reserved, but Carlini said rentals can start around $200, making it an accessible option for many types of events.

The Prairie Arts Center also provides tables and chairs as part of the rental, and guests are welcome to bring in their own catering. A bar option is available through the center’s liquor license.

Carlini said the space can also be used for wedding ceremonies, with couples having the option to move upstairs afterward for their reception.

In addition to private rentals, the Prairie Arts Center hosts its own community events and fundraisers throughout the year.

Past events have included outdoor concerts and performances by touring musicians. The center also hosted a unique forging competition called Fire on the Prairie, modeled after the History Channel series Forged in Fire, which brought participants from several states to North Platte to create knives during an all-day event.

Carlini said a variety of new events are coming up this spring.

One upcoming event is a Princess Tea Party designed as a “mommy and me” experience where children can dress up, participate in activities and take photos.

The Prairie Arts Center is also planning to bring back Downtown Tours and Brewers, a popular event that gives participants the opportunity to explore upper floors of historic downtown buildings that are rarely open to the public. Many of the spaces remain largely unchanged from decades ago, offering a unique look into the city’s past before the evening wraps up with drinks at a local location.

Carlini said the event is typically limited to about 30 tickets and often sells out.

Along with events, the Prairie Arts Center continues to offer a wide variety of creative classes for both adults and children.

New classes include clay hand-building workshops where participants can create projects such as garden gnomes, charcuterie boards and decorative house numbers.

Carlini said the clay classes take place in the building’s basement studio, where students learn to work with durable stoneware clay. After the pieces are formed, they are fired in a kiln and participants can return later to glaze their work before it is fired again.

Another upcoming class will teach participants how to make large finger-knit blankets using chunky yarn. Carlini said the class has proven popular and is nearly full.

The Prairie Arts Center is also launching classes where participants can customize flannel or denim jackets using band or school T-shirts.

Kids programming will return as well, with summer classes for ages 4 to 7 and 8 to 11 expected to be posted in early April. The classes run weekly from late May through August and typically include around 25 children per session.

Carlini encouraged anyone curious about the Prairie Arts Center to stop by and explore the building.

“It’s free of charge,” she said. “You can walk in, kind of look at the building, grab a calendar, ask questions.”

The historic building includes three floors and a basement with studios and galleries, and visitors can also view the ceramics studio during open studio times.

The Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture Crops Judging Team continued an exceptional competitive season this weekend, earning first-place team honors at the Iowa State Crops Contest and claiming nine of the top ten individual placings.

Other team members competing included Jada Eilert, Hailey Loutzenhiser, Kyra Jespersen, Mason Semler and Rachel Bose; also achieving top 10 individual scores as unofficial contestants.

Crops judging competitions challenge students to apply advanced agronomy knowledge through crop and seed identification, laboratory analysis, production problem solving and agronomic calculations. The fast-paced contests simulate the real-world decisions crop consultants, agronomists and producers make in the field.

“The Iowa State contest was another great learning experience for the students and their hard work continues to show great results,” said Dr. Brad Ramsdale, NCTA agronomy professor and crops judging team coach.

 </figure>The Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture Crops Judging Team continued an exceptional competitive season this weekend, earning first-place team honors at the Iowa State Crops Contest and claiming nine of the top ten individual placings.Leading the field for NCTA were:-1st: Wyatt Ozenbaugh-2nd: KaCee Jo Saffer-3rd: Grant Ottun-4th: Aaron UnderwoodOther team members competing included Jada Eilert, Hailey Loutzenhiser, Kyra Jespersen, Mason Semler and Rachel Bose; also achieving top 10 individual scores as unofficial contestants.Crops judging competitions challenge students to apply advanced agronomy knowledge through crop and seed identification, laboratory analysis, production problem solving and agronomic calculations. The fast-paced contests simulate the real-world decisions crop consultants, agronomists and producers make in the field.“The Iowa State contest was another great learning experience for the students and their hard work continues to show great results,” said Dr. Brad Ramsdale, NCTA agronomy professor and crops judging team coach.“We also had the opportunity to tour Corteva’s Pioneer Seed Headquarters in Johnston, IA, which included their high-tech greenhouse facility and laboratories for advancing crop genetics,” Ramsdale said.Experiences like competitive judging, applied lab work and direct interaction with industry partners reflect the spirit of NCTA’s AgVantage Pathway—a partnership-driven approach to experiential education that connects students directly with the agriculture industry.Through these rigorous competitions, students sharpen the analytical skills needed for careers as crop consultants, agronomy sales professionals and precision agriculture specialists. Others build a strong foundation for continuing their education in agronomy and crop science at four-year universities.For many NCTA students who come from family farming operations, the experience also translates directly back to the farm. The agronomic training gained through judging competitions equips them with the ability to diagnose crop challenges, evaluate soil and plant conditions and apply science-based production practices that help maximize yields and improve long-term sustainability.At NCTA, these experiences demonstrate how a hands-on education and strong industry partnerships prepare students to lead the next generation of crop production—whether advising producers across the region or applying their expertise at home on the family farm.
