Group tourism continues to grow in North Platte and Lincoln County, thanks in large part to targeted efforts by Visit North Platte.

Amanda Connick focuses on attracting group tours for Visit North Platte, including how motorcoach tours, reunions, conventions, and senior travel groups are discovering what the area has to offer — often for the first time.

Connick said her primary role is bringing organized group travel to the region, particularly bus tours that may have previously passed through North Platte without stopping.

“Many of them had no idea what we had to offer,” Connick said. “It’s so much fun promoting what we have.”

Classic attractions and group-only experiences

Connick said groups are often familiar with North Platte’s staple attractions, including the Golden Spike Tower, Lincoln County Historical Museum, and Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park.

But she said Visit North Platte has also worked to create exclusive group-only experiences to give tour operators even more reasons to include the community in their itineraries.

Those experiences range from guided storytelling and themed meals to hands-on activities that highlight local history and culture.

One of the biggest surprises for visitors, Connick said, is learning that North Platte is home to the world’s largest railroad classification yard, operated by Union Pacific Railroad.

“Train people love it,” she said, adding that events like Rail Days and visits to the Golden Spike Tower draw a passionate following.

Connick said groups are often intrigued — and amused — by the idea of tanking on the North Platte River, an activity that has become increasingly popular with organized tours in recent years.

While many group travelers are seniors, she said the experience is accessible and adaptable for a wide range of ages and abilities.

Another standout experience is the North Platte World War II Canteen story, which Connick described as one of the community’s most powerful and meaningful attractions. Group tours can attend presentations, enjoy a themed canteen-style meal, and finish the experience with angel food cake, tying history and hospitality together.

Groups can also enjoy appearances by a Buffalo Bill Cody impersonator, horse-drawn wagon rides, wine tasting paired with stargazing, downtown walking tours highlighting historic buildings, and even ice cream for breakfast — a favorite tradition that is also offered exclusively to visiting bus groups.

“We have beef, we have birds, we have Buffalo Bill,” Connick said. “What more can you ask for?”

Connick emphasized that many of the experiences promoted to group tours are also available to local residents, encouraging the community to take part in the same activities visitors enjoy.

She said Visit North Platte has seen a healthy increase in both group travel and individual visitors in recent years, benefiting businesses across the community.

One of the newest tourism initiatives is North Platte Coffee Week, hosted for the first time by Visit North Platte.

The event runs Feb. 8–14 and features a Coffee Week Passport, encouraging residents and visitors to explore local coffee shops and tea locations.

Participants who purchase a beverage at seven different locations during the week can turn in their completed passport at Visit North Platte for prizes. Additional visits and social media participation can earn extra entries into prize drawings.

Connick said passports are available at the Visit North Platte office and at all participating locations.

Participating businesses include Seven Brew, All Sorts and Mug Coffee Shop, The Coffee Bin, Dunkin’, Einstein Bros. Bagels, The Espresso Shop, Lose Coffee, Mellow Grind, Scooter’s, The Fix, TJ Nutrition, and Voodoo Coffee.

The Lincoln County Board of Commissioners used January to reorganize leadership roles, reassign committee responsibilities, and set the groundwork for a fiscally cautious year ahead, according to Board Chair Kent Weems and Vice Chair Chris Bruns.

Weems said the board’s annual January reorganization included electing leadership, reassigning committee seats, and reappointing department heads who report directly to the county board.

Weems explained that committee changes were intentional, aimed at cross-training commissioners and preparing for expected board transitions in coming years. Commissioner Hughley has indicated this may be his final term, prompting the board to bring newer members into long-standing committee roles, including Region 2, the local drug and rehabilitation facility, and law enforcement labor negotiations.

“If you don’t serve on those committees, you don’t really know what’s going on,” Weems said, noting that committee work makes up much of the board’s day-to-day responsibilities.

One of January’s most discussed actions was the board’s salary resolution, required by state statute every four years. Weems emphasized that the resolution does not impact current commissioners but instead sets compensation levels for officials who will serve beginning in January 2027.

The board voted to hold county board salaries flat, approving no cost-of-living increases for the next four-year cycle.

“These are tax dollars,” Weems said. “We’re trying to set a good example and be very frugal with limited funds.”

The delayed implementation of salary resolutions is designed to prevent officials from voting themselves immediate raises and to provide transparency for voters ahead of elections.

Vice Chair Chris Bruns said the board unanimously reappointed all four department heads who report directly to the county board:

Bruns said each department has demonstrated strong fiscal responsibility while managing limited resources.

“They do a lot with a little,” Bruns said. “The board has full confidence in them moving forward.”

January also marked preparation for the county’s annual “one and six” road plan, which outlines short-term and long-term infrastructure priorities. Lincoln County maintains more than 1,600 miles of county roads across 72 townships, making it one of Nebraska’s largest counties by land area.

Weems said the plan helps prioritize projects when funding is limited, noting that the county may have only a fraction of the dollars needed to address all infrastructure needs in a given year.

Commissioners also discussed courthouse and jail security, though details remain limited for safety reasons. Bruns said the county regularly evaluates both physical security and cybersecurity risks, including attempted cyber intrusions.

The board recently worked with Homeland Security specialists to stress-test systems and identify vulnerabilities, developing a strategic plan to address security concerns while remaining fiscally responsible.

Sheriff’s Office Equipment and Budget Oversight

The board approved vehicle purchases for the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office that were already included in the budget. Bruns said Sheriff Kramer has implemented a long-term vehicle replacement plan to maximize value for taxpayers, recently shifting from pickup trucks to SUVs due to rising vehicle costs.

Weems added that department heads are regularly challenged to justify expenditures, noting the board closely scrutinizes major purchases such as motor graders and heavy equipment.

Commissioners emphasized that property tax is the county’s primary revenue source, unlike cities that can rely on sales tax. Weems said the board remains sensitive to the financial pressures facing both agricultural producers and homeowners.

“We’re all paying property tax,” Weems said. “We know how tight things are.”

Looking ahead, the board is nearing completion of a multi-year comprehensive plan and zoning regulation rewrite, last updated in 2012.

Draft documents are available on the county website under the Planning and Zoning tab. Weems said the plan will guide growth decisions for the next decade and is designed to be legally defensible if challenged.

North Platte, Neb. - With 133 days to go until NebraskaLand Days returns to North Platte, Executive Director Bob Lantis says planning is already in high gear — starting with the annual Buffalo Bill Birthday Bash fundraiser later this month.

The Bash is set for Friday, Feb. 28 at the D&amp;N Event Center.

This year’s Buffalo Bill Birthday Bash will feature a “Talladega Nights” NASCAR theme, with Buffalo Bill Cody expected to make an appearance in a NASCAR-style outfit as part of the celebration.

Lantis said the bash is held in recognition of Buffalo Bill’s birthday — Feb. 26 — and is designed as both a community event and a major fundraiser.

“It helps raise money for NebraskaLand Days and facility improvements,” Lantis said, adding that the organization is working toward “big projects” in the future and the bash is one way to build support.

What to expect: auctions, live music, and a silent auction

Lantis said the evening will begin with doors opening at 6 p.m., followed by a brief program at approximately 7 p.m. The event then moves into a live auction, with roughly 14 to 15 major items expected.

Items mentioned during the interview included golf trips, utility trailers, football ticket packages, and more. After the live auction, the venue will be adjusted for entertainment.

Live music will follow from the Dylan Bloom Band, with hospitality areas opening during the concert portion of the night. A silent auction will also be available, remaining open until around 10 p.m.

The Buffalo Bill Birthday Bash is a ticketed, 21-and-over event, with tickets set at $60. Lantis said the ticket includes admission, a meal, and drink tickets, plus access to complimentary hospitality service once booths open, along with a cash bar option.

He highlighted **Treaty Oak Revival performing on Friday, June 26, and Zach Top on Saturday, June 27, noting Top recently earned a Grammy.

🎙️NebraskaLand Days Countdown Begins and Buffalo Bill Birthday Bash 

Nebraska’s manufacturing sector began 2026 under continued pressure, according to the latest Creighton University Mid-America Business Conditions Index.

For the fourth time in the past five months, the overall Mid-America index fell below growth neutral, signaling ongoing weakness across the region. Nebraska’s January Business Conditions Index improved slightly to 44.6 from 40.5 in December but remained well below the 50.0 level that indicates economic growth.

The index is based on a monthly survey of supply managers and uses the same methodology as the national Institute for Supply Management.

“Creighton’s latest survey indicates that the regional manufacturing economy continues to move sideways to lower,” said Ernie Goss, director of Creighton University’s Economic Forecasting Group. “Wholesale inflation has moderated, but employment remains weak.”

Nebraska manufacturers continued to lose jobs in January, marking the 10th consecutive month that the regional employment index remained below growth neutral. Nebraska’s employment component registered 48.7 for the month.

Long-term trends show deeper challenges. According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data, the nine-state Mid-America region — which includes Nebraska — has lost more than 333,000 manufacturing jobs over the past 25 years, representing roughly 20 percent of its manufacturing workforce.

Trade conditions also remained strained. New export orders fell below growth neutral, and imports continued to decline as higher prices and trade restrictions limited overseas purchasing. According to the U.S. International Trade Administration, Nebraska manufacturing exports totaled $5.2 billion during the first 10 months of 2025, down from $5.8 billion during the same period in 2024 — an 11.9 percent decrease.

Tariffs continued to influence business decisions. About 31 percent of survey respondents said tariffs forced their firms to change suppliers, with some reporting a shift toward domestic purchasing.

Despite weak conditions, economic confidence improved. The Business Confidence Index climbed to its highest level in 12 months as wholesale inflation moderated and tariff policies stabilized.

Other Nebraska index components for January included new orders at 49.7, production at 47.2, delivery lead times at 45.5, and inventories at 31.7, indicating reduced stockpiling following earlier concerns over tariffs.

The Mid-America Business Conditions Index surveys manufacturers in nine states: Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and South Dakota. February survey results are scheduled for release on the first business day of March.

 </figure>Nebraska’s manufacturing sector began 2026 under continued pressure, according to the latest Creighton University Mid-America Business Conditions Index.For the fourth time in the past five months, the overall Mid-America index fell below growth neutral, signaling ongoing weakness across the region. Nebraska’s January Business Conditions Index improved slightly to 44.6 from 40.5 in December but remained well below the 50.0 level that indicates economic growth.The index is based on a monthly survey of supply managers and uses the same methodology as the national Institute for Supply Management.“Creighton’s latest survey indicates that the regional manufacturing economy continues to move sideways to lower,” said Ernie Goss, director of Creighton University’s Economic Forecasting Group. “Wholesale inflation has moderated, but employment remains weak.”Nebraska manufacturers continued to lose jobs in January, marking the 10th consecutive month that the regional employment index remained below growth neutral. Nebraska’s employment component registered 48.7 for the month.Long-term trends show deeper challenges. According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data, the nine-state Mid-America region — which includes Nebraska — has lost more than 333,000 manufacturing jobs over the past 25 years, representing roughly 20 percent of its manufacturing workforce.Trade conditions also remained strained. New export orders fell below growth neutral, and imports continued to decline as higher prices and trade restrictions limited overseas purchasing. According to the U.S. International Trade Administration, Nebraska manufacturing exports totaled $5.2 billion during the first 10 months of 2025, down from $5.8 billion during the same period in 2024 — an 11.9 percent decrease.Tariffs continued to influence business decisions. About 31 percent of survey respondents said tariffs forced their firms to change suppliers, with some reporting a shift toward domestic purchasing.Despite weak conditions, economic confidence improved. The Business Confidence Index climbed to its highest level in 12 months as wholesale inflation moderated and tariff policies stabilized.Other Nebraska index components for January included new orders at 49.7, production at 47.2, delivery lead times at 45.5, and inventories at 31.7, indicating reduced stockpiling following earlier concerns over tariffs.The Mid-America Business Conditions Index surveys manufacturers in nine states: Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and South Dakota. February survey results are scheduled for release on the first business day of March.

Council members are expected to work through a full consent agenda, including approval of minutes from the January 20 and 22 meetings, several mayoral appointments and reappointments to city boards and commissions, and acceptance of the city’s audit for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2025.

Tonight’s consent agenda also includes approval of the North Platte Fire Department’s 2025 annual report, a license agreement with NPICE, Inc., and final approval of the Zeller Second Subdivision following a recommendation from the City Planning Commission.

On the regular agenda, council members will consider entering into a $16,000 professional services agreement with Miller &amp; Associates to complete an update to the city’s Historic Buildings Survey. The council will also be asked to approve claims.

The agenda allows for a closed session if needed to discuss personnel matters, real estate transactions, or potential litigation. Time is also set aside for informational items from the mayor, council, city administrator, and city attorney, as well as public agenda requests.

The Hot Sheets: February 3, 2026

North Platte, Neb. - Mid-Plains Community College will celebrate the completion of its new Electrical Technology Building with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Feb. 18.

The event is scheduled for 4 p.m. on the North Platte Community College North Campus at 1101 Halligan Drive. Community members, industry partners, and the public are invited to attend and tour the new facility.

The new building marks a major milestone for Mid-Plains Community College, as it is the first new building constructed on the North Campus since the early 1990s.

The Electrical Technology program has operated out of its previous facility since 1979 and has expanded over the years to include an Electrical Automation degree. The program continues to see strong demand, regularly operating full classes with a waitlist.

As demand for residential and commercial electricians has grown, college officials say the new facility will allow MPCC to better train students entering the workforce.

“This building represents our commitment to the community, our investment in the trades and our dedication to preparing a skilled workforce,” said Dr. Jody Tomanek, vice president for academic affairs and North Platte Community College. “It opens the door to expanded opportunities not only for students, but for professionals and partners across the state.”

Electrical Technology instructors Jake Elmshaeuser and Scott Mustion said the new space significantly improves safety, visibility, and efficiency for hands-on training.

“The new facility gives us individual workstations, better sight lines and more room for hands-on training,” Elmshaeuser said. “It allows us to train more students without sacrificing the quality or safety of instruction.”

In addition to student instruction, the building will support continuing education, license renewal training, and professional development opportunities for electricians already working in the field. College officials expect the expanded offerings to attract professionals from across the region.

A unique feature of the program is that students are taught by licensed electricians who continue to work in the field.

“We’re electricians teaching future electricians,” Elmshaeuser said. “Our students learn real-world skills and experience, so they’re prepared for what they’ll encounter on the job.”

The MPCC Electrical Technology program can be completed in one year through five eight-week courses, allowing students to enter the workforce more quickly while reducing education costs. Faculty emphasize hands-on training and individualized support to prepare graduates for success in the electrical industry.

“The trades are alive and thriving,” Mustion said. “This is a great opportunity to showcase our program and benefit our community, our workforce and the future.”

The most prestigious Park University academic scholarship given is the Presidential Honors Scholarship. This award, traditionally given to two incoming freshmen, covers full tuition, fees, and room and board for four years, as well as a $5,000 stipend for a study abroad experience. The Lincoln County Board of Commissioners will meet Monday morning, Feb. 2, at the Lincoln County Courthouse, with multiple agenda items ranging from routine business to a liquor license public hearing.

The commissioners’ meeting is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. in the Commissioners Room. After opening with prayer, the board is expected to approve minutes from its Jan. 26 meeting and hear public comment.

Commissioners will then consider several administrative items, including claims and treasurer’s receipts, a right-of-way permit for Allo Communications, and a special designated liquor permit request from DEAM LLC (Axes &amp; Aces) for a Feb. 13 reception at The Farmhouse. The board will also discuss setting a date and location for a public hearing on the Lincoln County Comprehensive Plan and authorize the chair to sign a cremation authorization under state statute.

At 9:15 a.m., the board will recess and reconvene as the Lincoln County Board of Equalization. Items on that agenda include approval of prior meeting minutes, public comment, and certificates of correction and refund submitted by the county assessor.

The commissioners are scheduled to reconvene at 9:30 a.m. for a public hearing on an application for a Class D liquor license submitted by Ranchland Mini Mart LLC, doing business as Ranchland Mini Mart in Maxwell. Following the hearing, the board will consider whether to recommend approval to the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission.

The agenda also allows for a possible closed session to discuss legal strategy, real estate matters, security issues, or job performance evaluations, if necessary. The meeting will conclude with concerns from elected officials or department heads and committee reports from the commissioners.

The meeting will be livestreamed on the county’s YouTube channel and is open to the public.

Central Nebraska community partners are coming together to host a free Ag Health and Safety Event, Cultivating Health, on Tuesday, Feb. 3, in Gothenburg.

The event will be held at the Dayspring Bank Event Center and is designed to take a broad look at the health, safety, and day-to-day challenges involved in agriculture and rural life.

Joe Richeson, one of the organizers, said the event goes beyond traditional safety training.

“This isn’t hard-hat safety or excavation safety,” Richeson said. “It’s more of a top-down approach to what it takes to run an ag operation, whether you’re a producer, farmer, rancher, or involved in ag in some other way.”

Sessions throughout the day will cover a wide range of topics, including mental health, distracted driving, water quality and quantity, nitrates in drinking water, occupational safety, and nutrition for long workdays in the field.

Presenters include the Nebraska Trucking Association, members of the governor’s groundwater task force, Nebraska Medicine, and an occupational therapist focusing on safe movement and body mechanics. A session on food preparation will also address how to safely prepare energy-rich meals for long days during planting, harvesting, or livestock work.

Richeson said the event is open to anyone, not just those directly involved in agriculture.

“You don’t have to be ag-related to attend,” he said. “Ag touches everyone’s life every day, whether you realize it or not.”

Spouses and family members are encouraged to attend, particularly for the mental health session, which focuses on coping with the stresses unique to the agricultural industry, including markets, employees, and daily uncertainty.

The event begins at 10:30 a.m. Exhibit booths will be set up by noon and remain open until 4 p.m., with sessions concluding at 4 p.m. A business-after-hours event will follow from 4 to 7 p.m.

Attendees may come and go throughout the day and are not required to stay for all sessions. A free lunch will be provided, and local FFA members will assist during the event.

Health screenings will also be available through Gothenburg Health, with options for multiple screenings, including full blood work for those who choose to fast.

Registration is not required but is encouraged. Information is available on the Gothenburg Health Facebook page, the Gothenburg Irrigation Facebook page, or by contacting Richeson directly at 308-529-1181.

NORTH PLATTE – The success of a fundraising campaign launched last spring is making an immediate and historic impact at the North Platte Catholic Schools. The NPCS Endowment-Trust, Inc. kicked off the Founded on Excellence campaign in April 2025 with a goal to increase teacher salaries at St. Patrick’s Jr/Sr High, McDaid Elementary, and Little Leprechaun Preschool. The aim is to address both teacher retention and recruitment. Additional goals of the campaign are to complete a handful of much-needed capital improvements at St. Pat’s and McDaid. 

Because of the early success of the campaign, the Endowment was able to designate $100,000 to the current, 2025/2026 school year operating budget for faculty salary increases. Endowment Director Wendy Dodson presented a check to NPCS Superintendent Kevin Dodson on January 29th

. “We have been thrilled with the initial positive response to the campaign. It is clear that our school patrons and our local community are in full support of our efforts to better compensate teachers,” says Mrs. Dodson. She notes that gifts and pledges to the campaign currently total $3,439,495, just shy of the Endowment’s Challenge goal of $3.5 Million. 

Dodson says she is hopeful the campaign momentum will continue through the current school year. “We will not stop until we pass the $3.5 Million mark. Our Pinnacle goal is $4 Million.” A portion of the campaign funds are earmarked for renovations to activities restrooms and boys’ locker rooms at St. Pat’s, and flooring and lighting at McDaid. The bulk of 

the campaign will be designated to a restricted fund for faculty salary increases. Fundraising Campaign Makes Impact at North Platte Catholic Schools

Lincoln County deputies recovered a stolen feed truck and arrested one suspect following an investigation that began south of North Platte earlier this week.

According to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, deputies were dispatched on Jan. 27 to a feedlot southeast of North Platte after a feed truck was reported stolen. Upon arrival, deputies confirmed that a 2012 Kenworth feed truck and attached feeder, valued at approximately $165,000, were missing from the property.

With no immediate suspects, deputies collected evidence from the scene and searched the surrounding area. During the investigation, deputies located a disabled vehicle parked along Interstate 80 near the feedlot. After comparing evidence from the theft scene with items visible inside the disabled vehicle, investigators determined the suspects likely arrived in that vehicle.

Investigators later made contact with the owner of the disabled vehicle, who agreed to meet with deputies in Lexington. The Dawson County Sheriff's Office assisted in contacting the individual. The stolen feed truck was subsequently located and recovered in Dawson County.

The owner of the disabled vehicle was identified as Stanley Russell, 54, of Longmont, Colorado. Russell was transported to North Platte and arrested on local theft charges. He was also found to have an active parole warrant out of Colorado and was booked into custody.

Investigators later determined a second suspect was involved in the theft. That individual was identified as Jeremy Best, 46, also of Colorado. Best was located in Kearney by the Kearney Police Department and will be returned to Lincoln County at the earliest opportunity to face theft charges.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office credited the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office and Kearney Police Department for their assistance in the investigation.

Stolen Feed Truck Recovered; Two Colorado Men Charged

CHASE COUNTY — A high-speed pursuit involving a stolen vehicle moved through much of Chase County and into Imperial Thursday afternoon before ending with two arrests.

According to the Chase County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy spotted a dark-colored sedan traveling at a high rate of speed west of Imperial on Highway 6 around 2:39 p.m. The vehicle was clocked above the posted 65 mile-per-hour speed limit.

The deputy attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle, identified as a black Ford Fusion without license plates, but the driver failed to stop and continued eastbound, increasing speed.

As the pursuit continued, another deputy positioned stop sticks farther east on Highway 6 before the vehicle entered Imperial. Officers with the Imperial Police Department also staged at the north end of Broadway Street. Authorities say the driver was able to swerve around the stop sticks and continued through Imperial.

The vehicle traveled onto Spur 15A and into Champion, then looped back toward Imperial using county roads. Spike strips were successfully deployed before the vehicle reentered town.

The pursuit continued through Imperial and east on Highway 6, where the vehicle left the roadway and drove through several fields before returning to town. After traveling through streets and yards in Imperial, the vehicle was finally stopped at the intersection of East Third Street and Highway 61.

The driver, identified as 25-year-old Brian Foster of Denver, Colorado, and a passenger, 25-year-old Michelle Marie Fernandez of Florida, were taken into custody without further incident.

Investigators later confirmed the Ford Fusion had been reported stolen.

Foster was arrested on charges including possession of a stolen vehicle, flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Authorities say additional charges are possible as the investigation continues. Foster is also reportedly wanted in Colorado on multiple felony charges.

After traveling through streets and yards in Imperial, the vehicle was finally stopped at the intersection of East Third Street and Highway 61.The driver, identified as 25-year-old Brian Foster of Denver, Colorado, and a passenger, 25-year-old Michelle Marie Fernandez of Florida, were taken into custody without further incident.Investigators later confirmed the Ford Fusion had been reported stolen.Foster was arrested on charges including possession of a stolen vehicle, flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Authorities say additional charges are possible as the investigation continues. Foster is also reportedly wanted in Colorado on multiple felony charges.
