NSP Seeks Public Help in Missing Person Investigation

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The North Platte City Council will hold a special meeting Thursday to hear public comment on the city’s proposed $268 million budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year.

The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Sept. 11 in the City Hall council chambers, 211 W. Third St. No formal action will be taken. The council is expected to vote on final adoption of the budget and related ordinance at its regular meeting Sept. 16.

State law requires cities to hold a separate hearing before approving their annual budget and filing it with the county clerk and state auditor by the end of September.

The proposed budget sets total expenditures at $268.3 million with a $16.9 million cash reserve, bringing total available resources to about $285.3 million.

The city’s property tax request is projected at $7.78 million, up about 2% from the current year. North Platte’s overall property valuation rose 4% to $2.17 billion, which means the levy rate would decrease slightly to 0.357962 per $100 of assessed value.

The general fund, which covers core services such as police, fire, parks, library and administration, is budgeted at $38.2 million, an increase of about $1 million from the previous year. Police spending is set at $9.3 million, while fire services are budgeted at $7.2 million.

Other major funds include $32.5 million for recreation infrastructure and bond projects, $60.4 million for electric utilities, $20.2 million for water service and $15.6 million for sewer operations.

North Platte City Council to hold public hearing on $268M budget

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The North Platte Northside Association is hosting a “Meet Your Neighbor Block Party."

The event will be Thursday, Sept. 11, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Northside Gathering Grounds near Rodeo Road and Highway 83.

Organizers say the free, family-friendly event will feature games, music, snacks, drinks and prize giveaways. Beyond the fun, the association hopes the evening will help spark ideas for strengthening the city’s north side and encourage residents to share input about the neighborhood’s future.

“Our vision is to revitalize the Northside and unlock its potential for growth, creating more opportunities for small businesses and families,” said Northside Association member Chad Fosdick. “We want to see safe, clean recreation spaces, thriving businesses, and a destination that welcomes both residents and visitors.”

Association leaders say the block party is meant to blend the atmosphere of a town hall with a community celebration. Representatives will be available to take feedback, and suggestion cards will be provided. A “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” program is also expected to be introduced, with organizers seeking both volunteers and community members who need assistance.

Nick McNew, Northside Association member, said the group was formed after conversations among community members who wanted a solution-focused organization for the Northside. Since hosting a successful town hall earlier this year, the association has been working to build momentum.

“We are just working together as a community to get people together to take pride in the town that we live in,” McNew said.

The event is hosted in partnership with NebraskaLand Bank and the Northside Gathering Grounds. All residents are encouraged to attend.

SUTHERLAND, Neb. — The Sutherland Volunteer Fire Department will host its first-ever pancake feed this Sunday, Sept. 14, as a new fundraiser and community event.

The feed will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sutherland Fire Station, 1400 West 1st St., with the local Kiwanis Club providing the griddles and cooking support. Attendees can enjoy all-you-can-eat pancakes, sausage and drinks for a freewill donation.

Firefighter and EMT Tyrel Fear said the department wanted to try something a little different from the traditional spaghetti or hamburger feeds hosted in surrounding towns. “We wanted something family oriented and easy to put together, and a pancake feed just made sense,” Fear said.

Beyond breakfast, the event is designed to give the public a chance to meet first responders in a relaxed setting. Fire trucks and equipment will be on display, and members of the department will be on hand to answer questions. “That’s mainly what this event is for,” Fear said. “To visit with the community in a non-emergent situation.”

The feed also comes as the department welcomes several new EMTs, with five women recently completing their training and awaiting certification. Fear said funds raised will support ongoing training and equipment needs. “There’s always something that comes up — whether it’s new techniques, extrication classes, or updates to equipment,” he said.

Organizers say they hope for a strong turnout Sunday. “We’re really looking forward to seeing everyone,” Fear said.

Community Invited to Sutherland Volunteer Fire Department Pancake Feed

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — A North Platte man has been sentenced to prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting a child.

He was found guilty of first-degree sexual assault of a child.&nbsp;

Chase Lenz-Schurr, 26, was sentenced Monday in Lincoln County District Court to a prison term of 20 to 30 years for first-degree sexual assault of a child.

The case stemmed from a September 2022 incident, when a 16-year-old girl reported to authorities that Lenz-Schurr had picked her up from school in Hershey and driven toward Sutherland. After stopping twice, she told investigators, he pulled off the road and assaulted her.

Lenz-Schurr was arrested later that month and ultimately convicted.

Under the sentence, Lenz-Schurr will serve at least 20 years before becoming eligible for release. Following his prison term, he will be required to register as a sex offender in Nebraska for 25 years.

Ogallala, Neb. — The Ogallala City Council will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, at City Hall to consider license renewals, financial reports, and a chicken permit request.

Council members will act on several license renewals for contractor and plumbing work, including gas fitter, master plumber, right-of-way contractor and sewer contractor licenses for John C. Piepho.

The council will also hear financial updates from the city clerk-treasurer, including the August 2025 financial report, and review minutes from both the special and regular meetings held Aug. 26.

Under new business, the council will consider a permit application from Daniel Nelson seeking approval to keep 12 chickens at 205 L&amp;L Court. Project updates from the city manager and reports from council members are also expected.

The meeting will open with roll call and a public forum before closing with council and staff reports.

United States Attorney Lesley A. Woods announced that Dustin Noble, 46, of North Platte, Nebraska, was sentenced on September 4, 2025, in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska, for Conspiracy to violate the Lacey Act. United States District Judge Susan M. Bazis sentenced Noble to 22 months’ imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system. After Noble’s release from prison, he will begin a three-year term of supervised release. Noble was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $179,680. Pursuant to the terms of a plea agreement, Noble forfeited multiple unlawfully taken wildlife taxidermy mounts, two crossbows, and several firearms. The Court also ordered that Noble shall not hunt, fish, trap, guide, outfit, or otherwise associate or be in the field with anyone engaged in those activities for 25 years, and shall not conduct, assist, or associate with any fish or wildlife taxidermy activities or be present, or assist with taxidermy services for 10 years.

Enacted 125 years ago, the Lacey Act protects the nation’s wildlife resources by prohibiting wildlife violations that cross state or international borders. A joint investigation conducted by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, Office of Law Enforcement and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Law Enforcement Division determined that Noble provided illegal hunting and guiding services to paying clients, family, and other associates, many from outside the state of Nebraska, between 2015 and 2021, while operating Noble Outdoors, a big game guiding business in North Platte. Noble also operated a commercial taxidermy business providing services of converting hides, skins, antlers, and other trophy parts of wildlife into taxidermy mounts. Some of Noble’s taxidermy clients included hunters unlawfully guided by Noble.

The investigation determined Noble charged paying clients $1,200 to $4,000 depending upon the target species and conducted the guided hunts in at least Lincoln, Hayes, and Frontier counties in Nebraska. During those hunts Noble’s friends, associates and/or clients agreed with Noble to violate Nebraska hunting laws to take wildlife including mule deer and wild turkeys. Noble employed various tactics and unlawful methods to increase the probability of locating, killing, and acquiring trophy wildlife including using specialized hunting equipment comprised of firearm sound suppressors and thermal optics; taking wildlife from upon or close to the road; taking wildlife during night-time or closed season hours; and hunting upon privately owned properties without the knowledge or permission of the landowner. Under Nebraska state law, hunters are prohibited from possessing firearms or using firearms to hunt deer during the archery season, are prohibited from shooting from or over a roadway, are authorized to hunt only during the legal shooting hours from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset, and must have landowner permission to hunt on private property.

The investigation substantiated 114 unlawful hunts conducted by Noble during the course of the conspiracy with the vast majority occurring between 2018 and 2020. Noble’s unlawful activities primarily targeted trophy-sized mule deer, including early season mule deer in velvet antlers. As revealed by extensive evidence obtained during this investigation, Noble’s illegal hunts included the taking of more than 12 species of wildlife, including most notably: 61 mule deer, 33 wild turkeys, 4 pronghorn, 3 white-tailed deer, an American alligator, a timber rattlesnake, and approximately 12 upland game birds, migratory non-game birds, game fish, and furbearing or non-game animals.

Prior to his conduct in this case, Noble was subject to a Nebraska Game and Parks Commission investigation and was charged with 71 counts. He was ultimately convicted on 10 counts in Dawson County Court, Nebraska, in February 2014. As part of his sentencing, he was subject to a 10-year hunting, fishing, and trapping revocation in the State of Nebraska. The current state/federal investigation revealed extensive and ongoing hunting violations committed, aided, and directed by Noble while his hunting privileges were revoked from his prior state conviction.

Today’s sentencing marks the near conclusion of the ongoing prosecution of numerous defendants related to violations committed by Noble Outdoors and its owner, associates, and clients between 2015 and 2021. To date, 19 defendants have been sentenced and ordered to pay a more than $255,000 in fines and restitution for state and federal violations related to the interstate transport of unlawfully taken wildlife. The investigation included the seizure and subsequent forfeiture or abandonment of more than 50 trophy wildlife antlers or taxidermy mounts from 27 Noble Outdoors clients or associates.

United States Attorney Woods said, “This case demonstrates what state and federal law enforcement can accomplish when they join forces and unite in a common pursuit of justice.&nbsp; Wildlife resources should be fairly preserved for the enjoyment of all Nebraskans – both present and future.&nbsp; Noble’s destructive tactics and actions targeted Nebraska’s mule deer populations in a manner that jeopardized the ability of Nebraskans to continue to enjoy a lawful hunting experience in the future.&nbsp; The United States Attorney’s Office is proud to join with our partners at U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission to ensure that Nebraska’s resources are protected and available to all its citizens equally.”

Woods announced that Dustin Noble, 46, of North Platte, Nebraska, was sentenced on September 4, 2025, in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska, for Conspiracy to violate the Lacey Act. United States District Judge Susan M. Bazis sentenced Noble to 22 months’ imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system. After Noble’s release from prison, he will begin a three-year term of supervised release. Noble was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $179,680. Pursuant to the terms of a plea agreement, Noble forfeited multiple unlawfully taken wildlife taxidermy mounts, two crossbows, and several firearms. The Court also ordered that Noble shall not hunt, fish, trap, guide, outfit, or otherwise associate or be in the field with anyone engaged in those activities for 25 years, and shall not conduct, assist, or associate with any fish or wildlife taxidermy activities or be present, or assist with taxidermy services for 10 years.Enacted 125 years ago, the Lacey Act protects the nation’s wildlife resources by prohibiting wildlife violations that cross state or international borders. A joint investigation conducted by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, Office of Law Enforcement and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Law Enforcement Division determined that Noble provided illegal hunting and guiding services to paying clients, family, and other associates, many from outside the state of Nebraska, between 2015 and 2021, while operating Noble Outdoors, a big game guiding business in North Platte. Noble also operated a commercial taxidermy business providing services of converting hides, skins, antlers, and other trophy parts of wildlife into taxidermy mounts. Some of Noble’s taxidermy clients included hunters unlawfully guided by Noble.<figure>

 </figure>The investigation determined Noble charged paying clients $1,200 to $4,000 depending upon the target species and conducted the guided hunts in at least Lincoln, Hayes, and Frontier counties in Nebraska. During those hunts Noble’s friends, associates and/or clients agreed with Noble to violate Nebraska hunting laws to take wildlife including mule deer and wild turkeys. Noble employed various tactics and unlawful methods to increase the probability of locating, killing, and acquiring trophy wildlife including using specialized hunting equipment comprised of firearm sound suppressors and thermal optics; taking wildlife from upon or close to the road; taking wildlife during night-time or closed season hours; and hunting upon privately owned properties without the knowledge or permission of the landowner. Under Nebraska state law, hunters are prohibited from possessing firearms or using firearms to hunt deer during the archery season, are prohibited from shooting from or over a roadway, are authorized to hunt only during the legal shooting hours from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset, and must have landowner permission to hunt on private property.The investigation substantiated 114 unlawful hunts conducted by Noble during the course of the conspiracy with the vast majority occurring between 2018 and 2020. Noble’s unlawful activities primarily targeted trophy-sized mule deer, including early season mule deer in velvet antlers. As revealed by extensive evidence obtained during this investigation, Noble’s illegal hunts included the taking of more than 12 species of wildlife, including most notably: 61 mule deer, 33 wild turkeys, 4 pronghorn, 3 white-tailed deer, an American alligator, a timber rattlesnake, and approximately 12 upland game birds, migratory non-game birds, game fish, and furbearing or non-game animals.Prior to his conduct in this case, Noble was subject to a Nebraska Game and Parks Commission investigation and was charged with 71 counts. He was ultimately convicted on 10 counts in Dawson County Court, Nebraska, in February 2014. As part of his sentencing, he was subject to a 10-year hunting, fishing, and trapping revocation in the State of Nebraska. The current state/federal investigation revealed extensive and ongoing hunting violations committed, aided, and directed by Noble while his hunting privileges were revoked from his prior state conviction.Today’s sentencing marks the near conclusion of the ongoing prosecution of numerous defendants related to violations committed by Noble Outdoors and its owner, associates, and clients between 2015 and 2021. To date, 19 defendants have been sentenced and ordered to pay a more than $255,000 in fines and restitution for state and federal violations related to the interstate transport of unlawfully taken wildlife. North Platte Residents Invited to Review Traffic Plans on South Dewey Street

On 09-04-25, at 11:23 A.M., automatic license plate readers indicated a stolen plate from South Dakota was located on a vehicle being operated near the I-80, MM 179 exit on the Newberry Access road. Officers responded and observed the stolen license plate on a 2015 Jeep Laredo. Contact was made with Isiah Leblanc, age 25, and Ashya Red Bear, age 45. A check on the vehicle identification number showed that the 2015 Jeep Laredo was stolen from Sioux Falls, South Dakota on 08-01-25. Isiah Leblanc and Ashya Red Bear were arrested for Possession of Stolen Property - a Class IIA Felony, and Theft by Receiving Stolen Property - a Class II Misdemeanor. Isiah Leblanc also had a warrant for his arrest from South Dakota for a Parole Violation. Leblanc and Red Bear were incarcerated at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — Nearly a year after new owners took over Super Suds Car Wash on West Leota Street, the business is celebrating growth with upgrades and a renewed focus on community.

Jake Childers, who purchased the longtime North Platte car wash in November, said his goal has been to build on the foundation set by the previous owner while adding customer-focused improvements.

“We’ve added towels, window spray, compressed air, new brushes, and new chemicals in the tunnel,” Childers said. “It’s really about the details. People spend a lot on their vehicles, and we want to help them take care of them.”

One of the more popular changes has been complimentary towel and cleaner stations available alongside the vacuums. Membership options have also been updated, with higher-level packages including ceramic coating at no extra charge. Childers said the aim was to keep pricing accessible while adding value.

The car wash has also invested in infrastructure, including a wider, longer entryway to make the turn into the tunnel easier for larger vehicles. “Anything I can do to lower stress levels," said Childers, "let’s do that."

Beyond the upgrades, Childers emphasized the importance of being a local business. 

“We’re here every day. That makes a difference to us and to the community,” he said. “We’ve been able to support schools, local events, and be involved in the growth of downtown. That’s what we’re about — being local and giving back.”

On Thursday, Super Suds hosted a chamber ribbon cutting and community celebration. NebraskaLand Bank grilled Fairbury hot dogs, while visitors spun a prize wheel for free car washes, gift cards, and other giveaways.

Jake said the turnout was a reminder of why he and his team took on the venture. “We're local, so it's always good to see when a local business is handed over to a local person and just keep everything around here," he said. "And keep that same feel of why we're here and why we support each other."

LINCOLN — The Nebraska Legislature’s Urban Affairs Committee will hold a public hearing next week on Legislative Resolution 148, which focuses on the McCook Work Ethic Camp.

The hearing will take place at the State Capitol in Lincoln, Room 1507, on Thursday, Sept. 12. It will be livestreamed on Nebraska Public Media and archived on the Legislature’s website under LR 148.

Residents who wish to comment must submit written testimony online at least 24 hours before the hearing for it to be included in the official record. Comments are noted at the hearing but not read aloud. Those wanting to speak in person may do so during the hearing, though testimony time limits are expected to be around three minutes per person.

The hearing will primarily focus on building code issues related to the facility, but lawmakers have said other community concerns may be heard. Representatives from the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services have been invited, though ICE officials have not.

Following the hearing, the committee will prepare a report on its findings. No follow-up hearing in McCook is planned, though several senators indicated they intend to visit the facility.

On Septmeber 5, 2025 at approximately 8:23 a.m. Dawson County 911 Center received a call that a motor vehicle had been struck by a train at the intersection of Road 427 and Highway 30. Deputies responded and located&nbsp; a white Buick Enclave in the south ditch north of the railroad tracks with serious damage.&nbsp;

Located in the vehicle was driver, 73-year-old Scott Maline of Kearney and passenger 71 year 71-year-old Kathy Maline of Kearney, both deceased. All airbags were deployed, and restraints were in use.&nbsp;

It was determined the vehicle was northbound on Road 427, entered the uncontrolled railroad crossing, and was struck&nbsp; by an empty westbound train.&nbsp;

The Dawson County Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene by Nebraska State Patrol, Lexington Fire and Rescue, the Priority Medical, Union Pacific Railroad, and Rand and Brian's Towing.&nbsp;

Announcement Catches WEC Employees Off Guard

Gov. Jim Pillen’s late August announcement that the Work Ethic Camp (WEC) north of McCook will become an ICE detention facility came as a shock to the staff. 

Employees learned of the plan only one hour before the news became public. Pillen attempted to reassure them: “All of the folks that work in the facility, the 85 or 86 people that are employed and work at the Department of Corrections, will continue in the same fashion.”

The facility is expected to operate under a 365-day contract, with the option to extend. Staff will be converted to ICE-aligned operations, receiving “orientation specific to ICE standards.” Still, uncertainty remains among employees and families regarding the long-term fate of the facility and their employment post-contract.

State Pushed to Offer WEC to Federal Government

Recent legislative testimony confirmed the state offered WEC, not the other way around. 

State Sen. Wendy DeBoer said, “Nebraska reached out, and then was given a number of questions…about staffing levels and things like that.” She also clarified lawmakers are waiting on a formal agreement: “We’re told if and when an agreement is made…at that point at least the legislature will be apprised of that.” 

Sen. Victor Rountree noted concerns over costs for the state. Locals in McCook also question what kind of support the government will offer to the town. 

McCook Officials Limited by Federal Property Ownership

McCook city officials and Red Willow County leaders have emphasized that the WEC sits on state-owned land, limiting local control over zoning and permitting. In a joint press release, officials explained, “Because it is State of Nebraska owned property, the zoning regulations and procedures that apply to standard use matters, do not apply. This distinction…means that the state may proceed independently of local zoning ordinances.”

Despite this limitation, city leaders stressed their commitment to community development and safety. “Our priority is to continue building a community where people are proud to live, work, and play,” the press release said. 

Ongoing community projects include the P.F.C. Gerald L. Walters Youth Sports Complex, the expansion of McCook Industrial Park Phase II, the North Pointe Subdivision, and the recently completed McCook Aquatic Center, all of which aim to enhance recreational, residential, and commercial opportunities for residents. 

City and county officials emphasized transparency and promised to keep the public informed as additional details about the facility become available.

Overcrowding Pressure Mounts as Inmates Must Be Relocated

Nebraska’s prison system faces significant overcrowding, currently operating at 147% of its design capacity, according to the Inspector General of Corrections’ 2025 annual report.

The transfer of 186 inmates from WEC is expected to take place over a 45–60 day period. 

Relocating existing WEC inmates will require logistical planning, as the state’s detention facilities are stretched thin. Pillen highlighted the operational flexibility of the state’s corrections system, but acknowledged the challenges: “We have flex in our operational capacity of our prisons…we’re focused on operational capacity.” The move underscores the delicate balance between repurposing existing facilities for federal use and maintaining stability in Nebraska’s already overburdened prison system.

Public Outcry: Protests and 18,000+ Petition Signatures

Opposition has surged statewide. On September 1, protestors in North Platte joined a nationwide movement against Trump-era immigration policies. 

Public opposition to the ICE detention facility in McCook has spread quickly across the state. A petition launched by advocacy groups has gathered more than 18,300 signatures from residents in 386 towns and cities, according to organizers.

In their statement, organizers said: “Nebraskans made it clear: More than 18,300 people from 386 towns and cities throughout our state signed this petition saying this is NOT who we are. Nebraska is a state that welcomes our neighbors and values the contributions of local moms, dads, coworkers, neighbors, and friends.”

The petition also pointed to the lack of federal immigration reform, noting that U.S. immigration laws have not been meaningfully updated in nearly 40 years. “We need policy change, NOT punishment,” the statement read.

Organizers warned that opening the detention center could damage Nebraska’s reputation, linking it to family separation and expanded enforcement actions. They urged Governor Jim Pillen to reject what they called “a cruel and harmful ICE detainment camp” and instead represent “Nebraska values.”

Staffing Expansion and Security Plans Raise Questions

The ICE conversion will include 20 National Guard personnel and six State Patrol officers joining WEC staff, with roles in administrative support and logistics. 

Pillen said: “They will assist ICE in administrative taking fingerprints, doing swabs, checking people in and out, working with transportation logistics.” 

While the state maintains all current WEC staff are safe under the contract, lawmakers are watching closely to see if benefits and training remain intact.

Next Steps Clouded Amid Legislative Oversight Calls

🎙️ Nebraska’s ICE Detention Plan Sparks Statewide Backlash and Local Concern

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) has been notified of high levels of E. Coli at Lake McConaughy Martin Bay Beach, also known as Lake Mac. This means the water has a higher than usual number of bacteria, and residents should take extra care to not swallow any lake water.

“With the assistance of DHHS, we carefully monitor our lakes weekly during the summer for potential health risks,” explains Melissa Propp, Clinic Manager at SWNPHD. “When a lake has high E Coli levels, we recommend using caution around the water. If you are going to swim, make sure not to swallow water and don’t allow pets to drink the lake water.”

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), swimming during high E Coli levels can cause health issues. Young children should not be in the water at this point in time, since they are more susceptible to complications from E. Coli and other bacterial infections.

This means the water has a higher than usual number of bacteria, and residents should take extra care to not swallow any lake water.“With the assistance of DHHS, we carefully monitor our lakes weekly during the summer for potential health risks,” explains Melissa Propp, Clinic Manager at SWNPHD. “When a lake has high E Coli levels, we recommend using caution around the water. If you are going to swim, make sure not to swallow water and don’t allow pets to drink the lake water.”According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), swimming during high E Coli levels can cause health issues. Young children should not be in the water at this point in time, since they are more susceptible to complications from E. Friday features a Cozad Alumni 4-person golf scramble at Cozad Country Club and downtown carnival rides from 4 p.m. to midnight. The Grand Generation Center hosts a Sloppy Joe feed and evening bingo.

Saturday brings a full day of events, beginning with a pancake feed at Cozad Christian Church and the Haymarket in the Park at Veterans Memorial Park. The parade steps off at 10:30 a.m., followed by food, games, kids pedal tractor pulls, greased pig wrestling, and water fights hosted by the Cozad Fire Department. Carnival rides run downtown all day.

Sunday wraps up with live music from the Kyle Sayler Band, the final day of carnival fun, and a bicycle drawing from the Cozad Community Leaders.

Adapted by Christopher Sergel from the famous novel by S.E. Hinton,&nbsp;The Outsiders&nbsp;follows the story of Ponyboy Curtis and the social tensions between the Socs and the Greasers in 1960’s Tulsa, Oklahoma. With a cast and crew of 50 students, Director Brittany McDaniel and Assistant Director Nicole Cepel have been busy helping bring this story to life.&nbsp; “It’s a scary show to tackle because everyone knows and loves the story, whether they grew up with the book or the movie. I’ve asked a lot of our students in terms of emotional vulnerability and acting, and they continue to blow me away night after night. The technical crew has put together a beautiful set and it’s just been the best experience.”&nbsp; Don’t miss this chance to see your favorite middle school book onstage!

Theater goers should be made aware that there is some onstage violence and use of theatrical weapons.&nbsp;

The festival begins Wednesday night, Sept. 17, with trivia at the Sun Theatre, kicking off this year’s theme of “Love Where You Live.” On Thursday, the Rotary Club will host a hot dog feed at Lake Helen, followed by the Dog-N-Jog fun run for residents and their canine companions.

Friday’s schedule centers on Ehmen Park with a “Party in the Park,” where magician Joe Cole will perform before the pet parade and costume contest. The evening will conclude at Lake Helen with fireworks and a glow-in-the-dark dance party featuring music and glow sticks under the stars.

Saturday marks the festival’s busiest day, starting with a Lions Club pancake breakfast at dawn in Ehmen Park. The Harvest Festival Parade steps off at 10 a.m. along Lake Avenue, followed by root beer floats at First United Methodist Church. Local artisans and crafters will be featured at “Arts in the Park,” while more light-hearted contests like the bed races keep the crowd entertained. The Rodeo Grounds will host a draft horse show in the afternoon, and the evening will feature live music from the Nate Keim Band, a beer garden, and even a putt-putt tournament at the Sun Theatre.

The festival closes on Sunday with “Praise in the Park,” an interdenominational worship service beneath the trees in Ehmen Park. The day continues with a classic car show, live music from Formerly Three, and the Clint Demoret Memorial BBQ Contest, where grillers compete for bragging rights and hungry visitors get a chance to taste.

Organizers say the Harvest Festival is about more than events. It’s a time to reconnect with old friends, make memories with family, and celebrate why so many people choose to call Gothenburg home.

Gothenburg ready to celebrate annual Harvest Festival

LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska State Troopers arrested 80 impaired drivers during the final weeks of the summer travel season. The traffic stops were part of the nationwide Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.

The enforcement effort ran from Aug. 16 through Sept. 1, with troopers working overtime to target impaired and dangerous driving behaviors.

“The last few weeks have been filled with high-traffic events across Nebraska, and more are on the way,” said Col. Bryan Waugh, superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Our troopers remained busy across the state during the final weeks of the summer travel season as well.”

In addition to DUI arrests, troopers issued 1,825 speeding citations and stopped 90 drivers for traveling faster than 100 mph. Other violations included open alcohol container (51), no seat belt (48), improper child restraint (20), minor in possession of alcohol (26), driving under suspension (100), and failure to move over (12).

Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, troopers arrested more than 400 drivers for DUI, stopped 373 drivers exceeding 100 mph and assisted more than 3,500 motorists.

“No matter the season, our troopers remain committed to keeping Nebraska roadways safe,” Waugh said. “We need that same dedication from Nebraska motorists as well.”
