Acting United States Attorney Matthew R. Molsen announced that Brian Titman, 46, of North Platte, Nebraska, was sentenced on April 10, 2025, in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska, for one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. United States District Judge Susan M. Bazis sentenced Titman to 235 months’ imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system. After Titman’s release from prison, he will begin a 10-year term of supervised release. Titman was also sentenced to an additional 15 months in prison on a separate case, stemming from the fact he was on supervised release at the time of he committed his new offense. That 15-month sentence will run consecutive to the 235-month sentence.

Titman had previously been sentenced in January of 2017 to 60 months in the Bureau of Prisons as a result of a separate federal conviction for distributing 50 grams or more of meth mixture. At the conclusion of his custodial sentence in that case, Titman was sentenced to a term of supervised release, which he violated. A warrant was issued for his arrest in March of 2023, and over the next year, Titman and law enforcement in west-central Nebraska played a game of cat and mouse, with Titman taking steps to conceal his identity and law enforcement actively working to arrest him. On at least two occasions, Titman fled law enforcement at high speeds, pursuits that were eventually terminated because of the risk to the public.

On March 15, 2024, a citizen reported to law enforcement the vehicle Titman was driving and where he was headed. Law enforcement again moved to contact Titman on a traffic stop, and Titman, driving the vehicle with two passengers, again took off.

During the pursuit occupants of the vehicle threw out multiple baggies of meth, personal belongings including phones, and ammunition. The recovered items included a Walmart bag containing 9mm ammunition and multiple baggies containing a total of 6.3 ounces of meth. Additional meth was located in the vehicle.

The vehicle eventually became high centered in a pasture in Lincoln County and all occupants fled into a nearby tree line. Officers were able to call all occupants out and take Titman and the passengers into custody.

The following day, the owner of the pasture called law enforcement and turned over approximately 11.5 ounces of methamphetamine, Narcan, and several personal items. The owner indicated he had found the items in the pasture and on the county road used to access it. The methamphetamine he turned over was packaged the same as the items located in the vehicle and during the pursuit. Law enforcement also located additional meth when they re-searched the field. In total, more 600 grams of methamphetamine were located.

North Platte Man Sentenced to 235 Months for Possession with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine

IMPERIAL, Neb. (April 12, 2025) — A man was arrested Friday night following a reported armed assault in rural Chase County, authorities said.

The Chase County Sheriff’s Office received a call around 9 p.m. on April 11 reporting an ongoing domestic incident involving a firearm. The caller said a man was attempting to force a woman into a gold Jeep Cherokee without license plates at gunpoint.

Chase County Sheriff's Department Sergeant Justin Mueller was the first to arrive on the scene and performed a felony stop on the vehicle as it was attempting to leave. The driver, identified as Christopher Weiss of Imperial, was detained without incident.

Deputies Rob Rusk and Rob Browning arrived shortly afterward and spoke with additional witnesses. The investigation revealed that Weiss had allegedly brandished a firearm, made threats, physically assaulted the female victim, and attempted to force her into his vehicle.

Weiss was arrested and booked into the Chase County Jail on multiple charges, including domestic assault, terroristic threats, use of a firearm to commit a felony, and first-degree false imprisonment.

He is being held on a $500,000 bond, 10% cash, and remains in custody.

Frontier County Fair in Stockville Announces Concert and BBQ Contest

Lincoln, NE - The home of Nebraska Volleyball will now officially bear the name of one of the legendary coaches in the history of the sport, as the University of Nebraska Board of Regents on Friday approved the naming of John Cook Arena at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Cook retired in January following a remarkable 25-year run as the Huskers’ head coach. He guided the Huskers to four national championships, 12 NCAA Semifinal appearances and 14 conference championships. Cook achieved a career record of 883-176 (.834), the fifth-best winning percentage all-time for a Division I volleyball coach. His record of 722-103 at Nebraska is the best winning percentage (.875) for any DI program over the last 25 years.

The success of Nebraska Volleyball under Cook extended off the court to record-setting attendance. Since moving home matches to the Devaney Center in 2013, Nebraska has led the nation in attendance every season in the 8,309-seat venue which will now be named to honor Cook’s accomplishments.

In addition to the naming of John Cook Arena, the project also includes a bronze statue honoring Cook on the north side of the Devaney Sports Center. Nationally recognized sculpture artist and Nebraska native George Lundeen has been commissioned to produce the life-size tribute to Cook and his career.

“John’s success as the leader of our volleyball program is unmatched,” Nebraska Director of Athletics Troy Dannen said. “His impact goes beyond what his teams accomplished on the court, from our athletic department, our university, community and state of Nebraska. To recognize John in a manner that will be visible for generations to come is a fitting honor.”

The court inside John Cook Arena will continue to hold the name of Terry Pettit Court to recognize Cook’s predecessor and fellow Hall of Famer. Additionally, the full athletics complex will continue to be named the Bob Devaney Sports Center in honor of Nebraska Hall of Fame football coach and long-time athletic director Bob Devaney.

"This is an incredible honor. I am truly humbled by all of it,” Cook said. “I am so grateful to Troy, the entire Nebraska administration and the Board of Regents for this recognition. The Bob Devaney Sports Center and Terry Pettit Court are named after two legendary coaches, and it's an honor to be able to share the name of the facility with them. And to have a statue outside the arena just blows my mind. I'm so thankful for the run we had at Nebraska, and I know the program is in great hands moving forward. I continue to be amazed at the amount of support and all the messages I've received from Husker Nation since retiring in January. All of this just reaffirms what I've always said: There is No Place Like Nebraska."

Board of Regents Approve Naming of John Cook Arena

 (Ainsworth, Neb.) — Weather permitting, work will resume April 14 on U.S. Highway 83 (US-83) in Valentine, according to the Nebraska department of Transportation. 

The West 4th Street in Valentine has been awarded to Prime Contractor Paulsen, Inc., of Cozad, and is scheduled to be constructed in 2025.  

This 0.74-mile project is located on U.S. Highway (US-83) in Cherry County. The project starts 0.06 miles west of the US-83 and N-12 junction at mile marker 213.42 and ends at mile marker 214.16. 

Work on the project includes reconstructing highway US-83 which requires removing and replacing the existing concrete pavement. The project also includes improvements to sidewalks, storm sewer, roadway lighting, and repairs to the bridge over Minnechaduza Creek. The City of Valentine plans to update city-owned sanitary sewer and water main along US-83/4th Street concurrently with this project. 

The project will be constructed in phases. The phase from the US-83 and N-12 junction to Edna Street will require complete closure and traffic will be detoured on Cherry, West 3rd, and Edna Streets. The phase from Edna Street to the end of the project will be constructed under traffic with lane closures controlled by temporary traffic signals. 

Access to adjacent properties will be maintained during construction but may be limited at times due to phasing requirements. 

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down.

4th Street in Valentine Project 

Jennifer Soper has been named the new Mid-Plains Community College Ogallala Campus Administrator. She will be responsible for coordinating and supervising college operations at the community campus and working with local leaders to develop and deliver education and training opportunities.&nbsp;

The Grant, Neb., native started at Adams Bank and Trust in Imperial right out of high school, transferring to the Ogallala location in 2005 where she most recently was a commercial banker.

As a banker she enjoyed the opportunity to help people succeed, however in her new role, she said is looking forward to having a more direct impact on students’ lives.

“As a non-traditional student who earned a degree later in life, I am passionate about education, and ensuring rural communities have access to relevant programs,” she said.

Soper is looking forward to working with students, the community, enhancing educational access and ensuring workforce development.

In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and two children. You can find them at the lake boating, on the golf course or cheering on the Huskers.

Soper named new MPCC Ogallala Campus Administrator

Visitors to state park areas in&nbsp;southwestern&nbsp;Nebraska will find enhanced day-use and camping amenities. Projects in the works or completed will appeal to an array of park users. The following is a roundup of those improvements and projects:

Ash Hollow&nbsp;State Historical Park&nbsp;– Visitors will find upgraded lights in the interpretive center built over the entrance of Ash Hollow Cave to protect it while allowing visitors to experience its unique features. The museum in the visitor center also received upgraded lighting where park guests can view displays of pioneer history, Native American history, as well as geologic and palaeontologic history. The lighting project was completed in March 2025 with park cash funds of $1,000.

Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area –Concrete voids were repaired at the Martin Bay boat ramp and boat ramp repairs were made at Cedar View in October 2024. The $30,900 in repairs was funded by the boating access program.

Martin Bay is slated to build a new, full-service, 37-pad campground with 50-amp electric soon.

Upgrades to the Martin Bay dump station will give the existing basic campground and the proposed new campground ample room for use.

At the public archery range, the archery shelter was reroofed and painted last October. The $2,500 project was funded by Park Cash and Big Mac Sports Club.

Buffalo Bill Ranch SRA –&nbsp;Three new waterfront basic camping sites were built in 2024 using Park Cash funds of $3,500.

Lake Maloney SRA –&nbsp;The project at Kansas Point has increased access along the shoreline at the inlet for anglers to be able to fish closer to the water’s edge.

An approximately 340-foot walking trail was constructed from the fish-cleaning station and parking area and leads to a new wooden fishing pier overlooking the spillway at the inlet. An Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant paved angler access walkway was included in the project and provides about 450-feet of accessible fishing along the shoreline. The walkway contains block walls with built-in lighting, benches, along with ADA parking and ramp. Additional lighting was added to help make the area more user friendly for night anglers. Tree removal along the inlet also was completed, which opened access to the shoreline, providing room for bank fishing or wading.

Five rock shoals were installed perpendicularly along the paved walkway to create habitat diversity for fish. The shoals contain four cubic yards of concrete rip rap and are marked with fish stamps along the walkway. Three gravel spawning beds were placed on the sandy bottom of the canal to enhance fish habitat and increase angler success.

This $1.1 million project was completed with Nebraska Game and Parks Aquatic Habitat Funds in partnership with the Nebraska Public Power District who provided the engineering design and rip rap for erosion control and rock shoal construction.

At the outlet, shoreline cleanup of trees, filling in holes, and waterfront restoration is almost complete. This project is funded by park cash funds.

Adding electrical camping sites on the outlet side is in the planning phase.

Swanson SRA -&nbsp;Park guests at Swanson SRA will enjoy 24 new, basic camping sites along the waterfront that have direct access to the beach. A new 1.5-mile hiking trail across from the day-use shelter on Trail 4 was built. These projects were completed in March 2025.

Beach and shoreline cleanup to remove overgrowth of a mile of Russian Olive and cottonwood trees along with thick buckbrush on Trails 3 and 7 are almost complete; more cleanup will continue throughout the year. The projects at Swanson SRA are funded by park cash funds.

Red Willow SRA –&nbsp;This park has an electric campsite upgrade in the planning stage. This project will boost all electric sites to 50 amps for all types of campers and RV use.

Medicine Creek SRA –&nbsp;This park has three rental cabins that received floor upgrades in April 2025. A shower house restoration included sealing and painting of walls and floors. Shower walls were made taller, providing more room for guests. New shower heads and curtains were installed.

Rock Creek SRA –&nbsp;People visiting this park have a new vault toilet with ADA-compliant parking and a walkway to use. The upgrade was added in April 2025 with a cost of $24,000 with Land and Water Conservation Funds and Capital Maintenance Funding to complete.

By Nebraska Game and ParksVisitors to state park areas in&nbsp;southwestern&nbsp;Nebraska will find enhanced day-use and camping amenities. Projects in the works or completed will appeal to an array of park users. The following is a roundup of those improvements and projects:Ash Hollow&nbsp;State Historical Park&nbsp;– Visitors will find upgraded lights in the interpretive center built over the entrance of Ash Hollow Cave to protect it while allowing visitors to experience its unique features. The museum in the visitor center also received upgraded lighting where park guests can view displays of pioneer history, Native American history, as well as geologic and palaeontologic history. The lighting project was completed in March 2025 with park cash funds of $1,000.Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area –Concrete voids were repaired at the Martin Bay boat ramp and boat ramp repairs were made at Cedar View in October 2024. The $30,900 in repairs was funded by the boating access program.Martin Bay is slated to build a new, full-service, 37-pad campground with 50-amp electric soon.Upgrades to the Martin Bay dump station will give the existing basic campground and the proposed new campground ample room for use.At the public archery range, the archery shelter was reroofed and painted last October. The $2,500 project was funded by Park Cash and Big Mac Sports Club.Buffalo Bill Ranch SRA –&nbsp;Three new waterfront basic camping sites were built in 2024 using Park Cash funds of $3,500.Lake Maloney SRA –&nbsp;The project at Kansas Point has increased access along the shoreline at the inlet for anglers to be able to fish closer to the water’s edge.An approximately 340-foot walking trail was constructed from the fish-cleaning station and parking area and leads to a new wooden fishing pier overlooking the spillway at the inlet. An Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant paved angler access walkway was included in the project and provides about 450-feet of accessible fishing along the shoreline. The walkway contains block walls with built-in lighting, benches, along with ADA parking and ramp. Additional lighting was added to help make the area more user friendly for night anglers. Tree removal along the inlet also was completed, which opened access to the shoreline, providing room for bank fishing or wading.Five rock shoals were installed perpendicularly along the paved walkway to create habitat diversity for fish. The shoals contain four cubic yards of concrete rip rap and are marked with fish stamps along the walkway. Three gravel spawning beds were placed on the sandy bottom of the canal to enhance fish habitat and increase angler success.This $1.1 million project was completed with Nebraska Game and Parks Aquatic Habitat Funds in partnership with the Nebraska Public Power District who provided the engineering design and rip rap for erosion control and rock shoal construction.At the outlet, shoreline cleanup of trees, filling in holes, and waterfront restoration is almost complete. This project is funded by park cash funds.Adding electrical camping sites on the outlet side is in the planning phase.Swanson SRA -&nbsp;Park guests at Swanson SRA will enjoy 24 new, basic camping sites along the waterfront that have direct access to the beach. A new 1.5-mile hiking trail across from the day-use shelter on Trail 4 was built. These projects were completed in March 2025.Beach and shoreline cleanup to remove overgrowth of a mile of Russian Olive and cottonwood trees along with thick buckbrush on Trails 3 and 7 are almost complete; more cleanup will continue throughout the year. The projects at Swanson SRA are funded by park cash funds.Red Willow SRA –&nbsp;This park has an electric campsite upgrade in the planning stage. This project will boost all electric sites to 50 amps for all types of campers and RV use.Medicine Creek SRA –&nbsp;This park has three rental cabins that received floor upgrades in April 2025. A shower house restoration included sealing and painting of walls and floors. Shower walls were made taller, providing more room for guests. Southwestern Nebraska state parks enjoy many improvements

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The annual&nbsp;&nbsp;Bloodhounds blood drive returns to North Platte for a 22nd year&nbsp;&nbsp;Wednesday, April 16, 2025.&nbsp;

Every spring since 2004, more than 2,500 donors have rolled up&nbsp;&nbsp;a sleeve during the Bloodhounds event, for a total of 2,446 pints&nbsp;&nbsp;of blood collected so far. This drive has also recruited more than&nbsp;500 new donors since the first year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“It’s no mistake that this blood drive falls during National&nbsp;&nbsp;Volunteer Month,” said Amanda Wehnes, Account Manager, for&nbsp;&nbsp;Western Nebraska. “North Platte Noon Rotary members live by&nbsp;&nbsp;the words ‘Service Above Self’ year-round. By hosting this annual blood drive, they remind the&nbsp; rest of the community to be generous volunteer donors for those depending on blood&nbsp; transfusions.”&nbsp;

All presenting donors will have the choice between a Noon Rotary t-shirt or a Red Cross t-shirt. PLUS, get a chance at scoring a $5K gift card when you come give in April. (3 winners!) Boxed&nbsp; lunches will also be provided to all donors.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Werner Construction, Inc., of Hastings, is the contractor for this project. Work includes milling, asphalt, overlay and widening, grading, cable guardrail, and culvert work. Traffic will be maintained with a pilot car and flaggers. A 10-foot width restriction will be in effect. Anticipated completion is July 2025. 

The purpose of this project is to preserve the transportation asset, improve the reliability of the transportation system and perpetuate the mobility of the traveling public.

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will accept applications for one 2025 bighorn sheep regular lottery permit beginning April 21.

A $29 nonrefundable application fee must accompany each application. Only Nebraska residents 12 years and older are eligible for the lottery. It is unlawful to submit more than one application in a calendar year for a regular lottery permit. Residents may receive only one permit in a lifetime. The permit is not transferable.

The application period begins at 1 p.m. Central time April 21 and ends Aug. 1.

Applications will be received at Game and Parks offices until 5 p.m. or, if applying at OutdoorNebraska.gov, through 11:59 p.m. CT Aug. 1.

The permit will be drawn later in August, and the successful applicant will be notified.The 2025 bighorn sheep regular season is Dec. 2-22.

Bighorn sheep regular lottery applications begin April 21

Registration is open for the annual Tyler Vanderheiden Memorial Run, set for May 31 at Cody Park in North Platte.

This race to raise awareness of mental health doubles as a fundraiser for Nebraska Game and Parks state park trails. It has drawn runners and walkers from all 50 states and 93 Nebraska counties, as well as two countries, in past years because of its message of hope.

Participants in the Memorial Run can run — or walk — this race in person at Cody Park,1899 US-83, or from anywhere around the globe.

The in-person event begins at 8:30 a.m. Central time, with race-day registration and packet pickup from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. at the park pavilion.

Those choosing to run virtually must register by 4 p.m. Central time May 30 and may complete their race anytime and anywhere between May 24-31.

5K, 10K, and half-marathon races are a dime a dozen. But the Vanderheiden Memorial Run offers participants the choice between a 2- or 5-mile distance.

These mileages are great for beginners, the 2-mile race being just long enough to invigorate someone on a new health journey. The 5-mile inches participants closer to a challenge goal: Entering a 10K or half-marathon.

Both distances take advantage of the relationship between physical health and mental health. Exercise releases feel-good chemicals that can improve your energy and mood, reduce stress and improve your quality of life.

This race was started by the Vanderheiden family after the loss of their son, Tyler, to suicide. In his honor, they started the memorial run in conjunction with the Platte River Fitness Series in 2020.&nbsp;

The race began with the intention of being a space for healing and support for those who struggle with mental health or know someone who has. Those who run it help break the silence on suicide awareness and ensure those who feel alone can see a community of support.

“This run unites us all by lighting a path for all who may be struggling,” said Shannon Vanderheiden, Tyler’s mom. “Join us. Run fast or slow, but with your whole heart. And share in the memory of Tyler and others who are no longer with us but, in their remembrance, can be a beacon of hope.”

This year, proceeds from the race will benefit the 1.8-mile Fort Kearny Hike-Bike Trail at Fort Kearny State Recreation Area.

This trail is part of a 13.1-mile trail system to Cottonmill Park in Kearney. The portion maintained by Fort Kearny crosses both channels of the Platte River, and its south bridge is a popular spot for viewing sandhill cranes during the spring migration. This natural spectacle brings together people from around the world, just as the memorial run does.

“We are incredibly thankful the Vanderheidens continue to support trail improvements within our park system,” said Jeff Fields, parks division administrator at Nebraska Game and Parks. “Because of their support, we are able to maintain or improve trails, which are truly valued by our park guests.”

All proceeds donated this year will be matched by Recreational Trails Program grant funding — doubling the race’s impact.

The meeting featured a heartfelt farewell to retiring General Manager Gwen Kautz, who served the district for 29 years, including 13 as General Manager. A round of applause filled the board room as Board President Dan Muhlbach expressed gratitude for Kautz’s dedicated service. Backyard Poultry seminar to be held in Kearney and North Platte May 2nd and May 3rd

&nbsp; Lincoln County - On 4/7/2025 Deputies were called to South Cottonwood Road regarding a single vehicle accident. Upon arriving Deputies located an unoccupied vehicle submerged in the canal. 

The lone driver of the vehicle was later located with minor injuries, alcohol was a factor in the accident. Lincoln Co. first responders respond to vehicle submerged in canal near S. Cottonwood Rd

The North Platte Natural Resources District is pleased to report this year's successful implementation of the Nitrogen Incentive and Reduction Act Program (NiRA). The District received 25 applications, enrolling 2,647 acres and awarding over $30,000 in funds. Most of the enrolled land is intended for corn planting this spring.&nbsp;

Letters of acceptance were sent earlier this week to participating producers and landowners. Due to the program’s success, there are plans to expand funding next year, creating even greater opportunities for landowners to adopt sustainable agricultural practices.&nbsp;

The North Platte NRD remains committed to promoting responsible land management and conservation efforts. Additional details about expanded funding and future enrollment opportunities will be announced soon.&nbsp;

(North Platte, Neb.) — Weather permitting, work will begin April 14 on U.S. Highway 183 (US-183), from reference post 72.62 to reference post 88.39, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. 

Vontz Paving Inc. of Hastings is the contractor for this project. Work includes bridge repair, milling, asphalt overlay, earth shoulder construction and seeding. Traffic will be maintained with temporary traffic signals, flaggers, and a pilot car.  

Bridge repair work will begin April 14 at reference post 79.81. A 12-foot width restriction will be in effect for the duration of the bridge repair work. The anticipated completion date for the bridge repair is May 2025. 

Upon completion of the bridge repair, construction will be suspended until August when milling and asphalt work will commence. A 10-foot width restriction will be in effect for the duration of asphalt work. Anticipated project completion is Nov. 2025. 

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down.

 (North Platte, Neb.) — Weather permitting, work will begin April 14 on Interstate 80 (I-80), from reference post 144.20 to reference post 150.96 and from reference post 0.00 to reference post 0.26 on Link 51-C (L-51C), according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. 

Western Engineering Company, Inc., of Harlan, Iowa is the contractor for this project. Work includes concrete repair, milling, asphalt overlay, earth shoulder construction, seeding, rumble strips, bridge repair and permanent pavement markings. 

Traffic will be maintained with daytime lane closures and lane restrictions. Flagging and a pilot vehicle will be utilized on L-51C. A 12-foot width restriction will be in effect. Anticipated completion is July 2025.
