Over the weekend, the Ogallala Speech Team took part in the Alliance Speech Meet. The Indians would take 2nd place at the meet. Members of the teams were recognized with individual honors. The Indians speech team will be back in action this Saturday at the Perkins County Speech Invite in Grant.

The Hot Sheets: January 22nd, 2024

Renowned vocalist Dr. Andrew White sings in the North Platte Community College McDonald-Belton Theater Friday evening while accompanied on the piano by NPCC music instructor Kristin Simpson.

White started the evening off with a lecture about Austrian composer Franz Schubert and Schubert’s Winterreise song cycle. White and Simpson then performed the song cycle for the public.

Lincoln County Cattlemen’s meeting will be held Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds Ag Building.&nbsp; It will start with a social at 5:30 pm and the meal at 6:00 pm.&nbsp; Speakers will start presenting at 6:30 pm.

The topics and speakers for the meeting are Mary Drewnoski, discussing Corn Residue Nutrition for Cows.&nbsp; She has been working on a statewide study to look at how some of these new hybrids may be affecting the nutrition a cow gets from the corn, corn husks and leaves.&nbsp; She will report the results of this statewide study.&nbsp; Randy Saner and area producers will discuss ways to hold down cow cost with the current inflationary rise in prices.&nbsp;

Lincoln County Cattlemen Meeting January 31 at Lincoln County Fairgrounds Ag Building

North Platte, NE- Visit North Platte and Airstream Ventures have partnered with PDGA to present the highly anticipated Flatrock Pro/Am powered by Prodigy. This disc golf tournament is an official event sanctioned by the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) where all participants are required to be current PDGA members. 

Prospective participants who are not currently PDGA members will be provided with the opportunity to acquire PDGA membership during the registration process.&nbsp;

Scheduled to take place on March 16-17, 2024, at the Cody Park Disc Golf Course and the River’s Edge Golf Course, the Flatrock Pro/Am promises to be a captivating three-round b-tier tournament. The tournament kicks off on Saturday, March 16th, with players engaging in the first two rounds. The excitement continues on March 17th, with the third round exclusively hosted for selected divisions.&nbsp;

"Hosting this event in North Platte is a great opportunity to continue to grow the sport of disc golf in the state of Nebraska, as well as in the region," said Jake Hedden, Nebraska PDGA State Coordinator, co-owner of Disc Gauntlet. North Platte, Ne — Every year, Nebraska 4-H Month brings thousands of young people, parents, volunteers, and alumni together to celebrate all the ways in which 4-H helps youth find a place where they belong. Across the state, Nebraska 4-H invites community members to celebrate:&nbsp;

Lincoln, Logan &amp; McPherson Co. 4-H will observe 4-H Month this year by hosting a 4-H open house on Saturday February 17, 2023 at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds from 3:00-5:00. We will be offering different activities such as: photo booth, seed mosaic, &amp; 4-H bracelets. Current members will have tables showcasing their past 4-H projects. Miss Nebraska’s Teen Boston Pettera will be there to judge the cooking contest 4-H members will be participating in. We invite everyone to come out and enjoy the festivities.&nbsp;

In addition to celebrating, youth are invited to join 4-H and complete the annual enrollment process during February. By becoming enrolled members, youth have the opportunity to join a club, exhibit projects at the county and State Fair, participate in contests, and apply for special awards and recognition.&nbsp;

4-H is Nebraska’s largest youth development organization – empowering nearly 140,000 across the state with the skills to lead for a lifetime. With the support of 12,000 volunteers, Nebraska 4-H helps youth develop and practice life skills through clubs, camps, school enrichment, afterschool, and special interest programs. The Mid-Plains Community College Rodeo Team will host its annual scholarship banquet on March 2 at Venue 304 in North Platte. The social hour will begin at 5:30 p.m. followed by a prime rib dinner at 7 p.m.

The event, which is open to the public, serves as a time to recognize the accomplishments of MPCC’s rodeo athletes while also raising funds for the team.

Activities will include presentations by the coaches and athletes, live and silent auctions and an award ceremony.

Tickets are $75 each or $500 for a table of eight. They can be purchased until Feb. 23 at:&nbsp;<a href="https://www.silentauctionpro.com/login.php" target="_blank">silentauctionpro.com/login.php</a>. Anyone who would like to buy a ticket for the banquet or participate in any of the auctions will have to first create an account on the website.

Meet The Rancher: Arthur rancher braves wild winter weather

LINCOLN — Questions are being raised about the recent purchase of semi-automatic rifles by the Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission, and whether a December report sufficiently answered whether the state could handle more racetrack/casinos.

The questions come as the commission, which has ramped up to 25 employees since the opening of casinos in Nebraska 16 months ago, will meet Friday to discuss the gun purchase and whether a new analysis is needed about whether more than six racetrack/casinos should be allowed in the state.

That&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://racingcommission.nebraska.gov/application/files/2117/0422/5165/Gaming_and_Horseracing_Market_Analysis_and_Socioeconomic_Study_12-26-2023.pdf">111-page “market analysis”</a>&nbsp;issued late last month concluded that Nebraska didn’t need any additional racetracks. That dealt a blow to several communities across the state that want to apply for a state permit to open so-called “racinos,” a racetrack with a casino.

At least two members of the commission — Tony Fulton and Shane Greckel — along with State Sen. John Lowe told the Examiner on Thursday that the recent report was incomplete.

Lowe, who heads the committee that deals with gambling in the Nebraska Legislature, said the report barely mentions the impact on the horse racing industry in the state.

“I think the whole study needs to be redone,” the senator said.

Fulton, a former state senator and state tax commissioner, said the report didn’t cover all the topics&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2023/02/28/proponents-of-expanding-casinos-beyond-existing-six-racetracks-won-a-round-in-the-legislature/">required by the Legislature, which ordered the study</a>&nbsp;to help determine whether the state could support more casinos and horse racing.

Currently, casinos are only allowed at the existing racetracks in Lincoln, Grand Island, Omaha, Columbus, South Sioux City and Hastings. Several communities, including Bellevue, Norfolk, North Platte, Fremont, Kimball and York have also expressed interest in opening casinos.

Another member of the Gaming Commission, Shane Greckel of Bloomfield, also said the study was incomplete.

“It definitely needs an amendment or addendum,” Greckel said. “It never even highlighted anything of the value to agriculture that racing brings.”

Two organizations — Warhorse Gaming and the Nebraska Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association — sent letters to the commission this week, calling for a new study of whether more racinos should be allowed.

Among the concerns raised by Lance Morgan of Warhorse Gaming was that the study was premature because every casinos in the state has yet to fully open, thus their impact couldn’t be accurately measured.

The study was done by The Innovation Group, a gaming consulting business based in New Orleans, that was paid $48,000 for its analysis.

The analysis of whether new racinos are needed might come into play Friday when the Racing and Gaming Commission is scheduled to vote on whether to allow the transfer of the quarterhorse racing license in Hastings to Ogallala. That would allow the opening of the first casino in the state west of Grand Island.

The market analysis on the impact of more racinos came a month after members of commission learned, to their surprise, that the agency had purchased 10 short-barrel, semi-automatic rifles for use by its 10 plain-clothes investigators.

The Sig Sauer MPX rifles, plus associated equipment, cost $30,350. Commissioners learned about the purchase in November and were later told that the guns would be used only as “a last resort” in the event of an active shooter event at a casino or racetrack. The firearms, officials said, would not be carried on the casino floor, but would be kept within easy access in the event of an incident.

“You have to meet force with force,” said Steve Eppens, a former Lancaster County deputy sheriff who is an investigator with the commission. Most active shooter incidents involve assault rifles, he said.

Steve Anderson, the director of enforcement at the commission, said all his investigators are sworn law enforcement officers who regularly train with weapons.

He said that there have been nine shooter-related incidents at casinos since 2018 and that the MPXs are the same weapons used by the Nebraska State Patrol for its SWAT teams.

Said Eppens, “If you don’t think active shooter incidents happen at casinos, just Google it.”

Lowe questioned whether the Gaming Commission needs such firepower.

“This is a regulatory agency,” he said.

The State Patrol, the senator added, is there to deal with shooting incidents.

Both Fulton and Greckel said that once an explanation was provided to justify the gun purchase, they agreed with it.

But the two commissioners said that the decision to buy the guns could have been handled better and that the commission is now adopting guidelines on how such purchases should be approved.

Tom Sage, the executive director of the Racing and Gaming Commission, said in a recent interview that the guns were purchased to be “proactive.”

“We’re trying like hell to make sure we don’t have a big issue at a casino and then we hear, ‘we told you so,’ ” Sage said.

He said that criminal activities do occur at casinos, mentioning sex trafficking, drugs, fraud and gang-related activity. Sage added there was a fatal shooting at Fonner Park in March.

Sage recently took a leave of absence to deal with personal health issues and was unavailable to respond to questions raised about the market analysis of racinos.

‘I’ll put our record up against anyone’

But in a recent interview with the Examiner, he defended the steps he’s taken in recent months to ramp up the commission to deal with a new industry, gambling casinos.

The organization, Sage said, had to hire new staff and learn about a totally new activity in the state and how to regulate it.

Both he and the agency’s lawyer, Ryan Forrest, said that’s brought a lot of pressure to bear and long hours.

“You can’t make everyone happy,” Forrest said.

Added Sage, “I’ll put our record up against anyone.”

Questions raised over gun purchase for gaming commission, whether racetrack study fell short

The North Platte Community College Theater Department will host open auditions for its spring play next month.

The play, “Plan 9 from Outer Space,” is adapted from the science fiction horror film of the same name from the 1950s that was produced, written and directed by Ed Wood.

The plot focuses on aliens seeking to stop humanity from creating a doomsday weapon that could destroy the universe. The extraterrestrials come up with “Plan 9,” a scheme to resurrect Earth’s dead. The aliens hope that by causing chaos, humans will listen to them, and if not, there will be no choice but to destroy mankind with zombie armies.

“’Plan 9 from Outer Space,’ is the epitome of ‘so-bad-it’s-good’ cinema,” said NPCC Theater Instructor Ritch Galvan, who will direct the play. “It is an unintentionally hilarious sci-fi ‘thriller’ from anti-genius Ed Wood that is celebrated for its staggering ineptitude. This stage adaption will be part homage and part mockery of the cult classic film.”

There are parts in the play for up to six men and six women ages 16 and older. Technical crew positions are also available. No previous acting experience is required.

Auditions will begin at 6 p.m. Feb. 13 in the McDonald-Belton Theater on the NPCC South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd. Those unable to attend at that time can contact Galvan at&nbsp;<a href="mailto:galvanr@mpcc.edu">galvanr@mpcc.edu</a>&nbsp;to discuss possible alternatives.

The Mid-Plains Community College Board of Governors met for its regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 p.m. (CST) Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2024, in Room 200 of the W.W. Wood Building on the North Platte Community College North Campus, 1101 Halligan Drive, North Platte, Neb.

Board Chair Ben Lashley started the meeting with a roll call. In addition to Lashley, those present were MPCC President Ryan Purdy and Board members: Jo Etta Brown, Matthew Broz, Kirk Crawley, Cynthia Duncan, Ted Klug Jr., Kim Korgan, Ernie Mehl, Kent Miller, Tyler Pribbeno and Tricia Schaffer.

MCC student trustee Graci Nelson and NPCC student trustee Reece Halley were absent and excused. NPCC student Dylan LaVante represented Reece Halley at the meeting.

a. The board elected the following officers:&nbsp;Cynthia Duncan as board chair; Kim Korgan as vice chair; Kirk Crawley as secretary/treasurer and Matthew Broz as assistant secretary/treasurer. Ernie Mehl and Kent Miller will be the board’s Nebraska Community College Association (NCCA) representatives.

a. MPCC board members completed a form indicating any potential conflicts of interest that could affect decisions regarding college matters.

a. The Board approved bills for December in the amount of $2,728,290.19.

b. The Board approved the following date and/or location changes for 2024 Board meetings: 1) Move the May 15 meeting to May 22 and hold the meeting at the Valentine Campus. 2) Cancel the June Board meeting. 3) Move the Sept. 18 meeting to Sept. 25. 4) Move the Oct. 16 meeting to Oct. 23.

c. The Board approved a bid to purchase windows and exterior doors for the McDonald-Belton Building from Larry’s Glass of North Platte in the amount of $133,551.

d. The Board approved the Mid-Plains Faculty Association (MPFA) negotiated agreement as presented, which includes a 4.25% total compensation increase for the 2024-25 contract year.

e. The Board approved a five-year contract for Jenzabar Financial Aid software and associated professional services in the amount of $232,180 from Jenzabar, Inc.

a. The Board heard a quarterly financial report from Vice President of Administrative Services Mike Steele.

MPCC Board of Governors meeting wrap up report

BRADY, NEB. - A truck driver has died after his semi-truck left the road, entered the median and came to a stop under the Platte Bridge near Brady this morning on I-80. Three troopers were treated for smoke inhalation, Nebraska State Patrol officials say.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to Nebraska State Patrol officials, approximately at 8:00am this morning, Lincoln County 911 received report of the crash on I-80. The crash occurred near mile marker 201, east of Brady. The semi-truck was pinned under the Platte Bridge.&nbsp;

When first responders arrived at the scene of the accident, the semi-cab was fully engulfed in flames. Troopers were unsuccessful in reaching the semi-cab due to the smoke under the bridge. Once fire crews put the fire out, the driver was found deceased.

Three troopers were treated for smoke inhalation by Brady EMS according to NSP officials. I-80 closed westbound from Gothenburg after the accident occurred.

 According to Nebraska 511, I-80 westbound from Gothenburg is now open. All eastbound lanes are open while the left lane at mile marker 201 westbound is closed as crews are still on scene.&nbsp;

&nbsp;10:03 am Update: Crews are still on scene working the crash that occurred near Brady, according to NE 511, I-80 eastbound from MM 200 to MM 203 (22m E of North Platte), the left lane closed. I-80 westbound is still closed from Gothenburg.&nbsp;This is a developing story at this time and will update when more information is available.

NPPD looking for information on a incident that occurred in late December

&nbsp;(LINCOLN, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have responded to more than 2,000 weather-related incidents over the last 9 days. In addition, the Nebraska Department of Transportation plow operators from across the state worked from January 13 to January 16 to reopen 1,700 miles of highways that were closed due to the storm. These teams continue to work to widen lanes of traffic through the areas of greatest impact and assist drivers who become stranded on roadways across the state.&nbsp;

Both agencies are advising caution as the next round of snow arrives Thursday, and frigid wind chills return for the next several days. A Wind Chill Advisory takes effect for most of Nebraska starting Thursday. The National Weather Service also predicts that much of the state will experience new snowfall, though expected to be lighter than the two previous storms.

“The work that has been accomplished over the last 9 days is nothing short of amazing,” said Director Vicki Kramer. “The NDOT team has coordinated to shift resources to the areas hardest hit on our state system while also assisting with county requests. The work is not done as crews continue to tackle larger drifts, work on widening areas, and preparing for the next round of snow. Please continue to travel with caution and know before you go by using available resources from your favorite weather provider to road conditions at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.511.nebraska.gov/" target="_blank">511.Nebraska.Gov</a>.”

Since January 8, while Nebraska experienced two major winter storms and extreme cold, NDOT and NSP continued working around the clock. NDOT plow crews have been able to open all roadways to travel, after many areas in eastern Nebraska received over a foot of snow between the two storms. State Troopers were also busy, helping 1,828 stranded motorists, responding to 93 crashes, and assisting other agencies with 133 additional incidents.

“While our teams have been busy during over the last week, our troopers and NDOT plow crews remain ready to help,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “If you have to travel, please be safe and stay aware of the conditions before hitting the road. If you do become stranded, call the NSP Highway Helpline immediately and connect with our dedicated dispatchers who can send help.”

NDOT and NSP urge all motorists to check&nbsp;<a href="http://www.511.nebraska.gov/" target="_blank">511.Nebraska.gov</a>&nbsp;or the 511 app and be prepared for continued winter driving conditions with the potential for new slick spots in areas with new precipitation. Any motorist who becomes stranded while traveling should stay in their vehicle and call for help immediately.

The NSP Highway Helpline can be reached at *55 or 800-525-5555 and connects motorists directly with an NSP dispatcher. In addition, the Nebraska Department of Transportation plow operators from across the state worked from January 13 to January 16 to reopen 1,700 miles of highways that were closed due to the storm. These teams continue to work to widen lanes of traffic through the areas of greatest impact and assist drivers who become stranded on roadways across the state.&nbsp;Both agencies are advising caution as the next round of snow arrives Thursday, and frigid wind chills return for the next several days. A Wind Chill Advisory takes effect for most of Nebraska starting Thursday. The National Weather Service also predicts that much of the state will experience new snowfall, though expected to be lighter than the two previous storms.“The work that has been accomplished over the last 9 days is nothing short of amazing,” said Director Vicki Kramer. “The NDOT team has coordinated to shift resources to the areas hardest hit on our state system while also assisting with county requests. The work is not done as crews continue to tackle larger drifts, work on widening areas, and preparing for the next round of snow. Please continue to travel with caution and know before you go by using available resources from your favorite weather provider to road conditions at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.511.nebraska.gov/" target="_blank">511.Nebraska.Gov</a>.”Since January 8, while Nebraska experienced two major winter storms and extreme cold, NDOT and NSP continued working around the clock. NDOT plow crews have been able to open all roadways to travel, after many areas in eastern Nebraska received over a foot of snow between the two storms. State Troopers were also busy, helping 1,828 stranded motorists, responding to 93 crashes, and assisting other agencies with 133 additional incidents.“While our teams have been busy during over the last week, our troopers and NDOT plow crews remain ready to help,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “If you have to travel, please be safe and stay aware of the conditions before hitting the road. If you do become stranded, call the NSP Highway Helpline immediately and connect with our dedicated dispatchers who can send help.”NDOT and NSP urge all motorists to check&nbsp;<a href="http://www.511.nebraska.gov/" target="_blank">511.Nebraska.gov</a>&nbsp;or the 511 app and be prepared for continued winter driving conditions with the potential for new slick spots in areas with new precipitation. NSP, NDOT Maintain Readiness as Winter Weather Continues

On January 17th, 2024 at 11:53 P.M., Officers from the North Platte Police Department responded to Newberry Access on the report of an accident.&nbsp; It was found that the accident occurred near the Westbound I-80 on-ramp.&nbsp; A semi-truck was Northbound and attempted to turn left onto the Westbound on-ramp.

 A pick-up truck was Southbound on Newberry.&nbsp; The pickup truck ran into the right side of the semi-tractor.&nbsp; The driver of the pickup truck was pronounced dead at the scene.&nbsp; The driver of the pickup truck was fifty-one-year-old, Jean Pierre Brownell of North Platte.&nbsp; The driver of the semi-truck was uninjured.

The investigation into the vehicle crash is ongoing.&nbsp; The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department and the Nebraska State Patrol are assisting with the investigation.

One dead after fatal accident in North Platte

BRADY, NEB. - According to NE 511, an accident has occurred outside of Brady on I-80 near mile marker 201. I-80 is closed westbound from Gothenburg due to the accident. Highway 30 is an alternate route at this time for westbound traffic. This is a developing story at this time and will update when more information is available.

NORTH PLATTE, NEB. - The Testing Ag Performance Solutions (TAPS) awards banquet held on Saturday, January 13, was the culmination event for the program’s seventh year of farm management competitions. The TAPS program was created by University of Nebraska educators and specialists, as an innovative way of connecting producers to industry professionals and offering a way of testing out new, advancing technologies through farm management competitions facilitated in North Platte, Neb., at the West Central Research, Extension, and Education Center.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Despite the winter weather, the event was a night of interaction and celebration of the 2023 competitions,&nbsp; which included popcorn, sorghum, subsurface drip irrigated (SDI) corn, and sprinkler irrigated corn. The&nbsp; participants in each competition made their own individual input decisions for their plots located in the&nbsp; same field as fellow competitors. These decisions differed for each competition including crop insurance,&nbsp; hybrid and seeding rate, nitrogen timing and amount, irrigation timing and amount, insecticide, fungicide,&nbsp; and, lastly, marketing of their crop.&nbsp;&nbsp;

For the first time in the seven-year history of the program the competition fields located in North Platte&nbsp; were affected by hail, which ultimately resulted in changes to the remaining management decisions and&nbsp; the final results.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Awards were given in each competition for greatest grain yield, highest input use efficiency, and most&nbsp; profitable. These designations came with a cash prize, along with a plaque, oversized check, and&nbsp; personalized TAPS apparel item.&nbsp;

The sorghum contest, in its sixth year, included both a dryland and irrigated portion, which were relocated&nbsp; this year to the Henry J. Stumpf International Wheat Center near Grant, Neb. There were 18 teams that&nbsp; competed. The team that included Brandon Rimpley of Orleans, Neb, and Ron Robison of Alma, Neb.,&nbsp; earned all three of the top honors for yield, efficiency, and profitability.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The program’s newest competition, the irrigated popcorn competition had 13 teams compete. The winners&nbsp; in the popcorn competition included: Roger Lansman of Ord, Neb., for the Greatest Yield award; Nate&nbsp;

Freitag of Byron, Neb., area took home the Highest Input Use Efficiency accolade; and AK Acres from&nbsp; Imperial, Neb., won the award for Most Profitable.&nbsp;

In the fifth year of the SDI corn competition, 16 teams competed. The award winners in the SDI corn competition included: Lorn Dizmang of Dizmang Ag in Moorefield, Neb., for the Greatest Yield award the Rattlesnake Boys from Wood River, Neb., took home the Highest Input Use Efficiency accolade; and&nbsp; Jamey Balthazor and Dan Fitts from Scottsbluff and Gering, Neb., won the award for Most Profitable.&nbsp; The Rattlesnake Boys team consisted of Kevin &amp; Amy Harsch, Jay Johnson, and Jeremy Gewecke.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The seventh year of the sprinkler corn competition had 38 teams participate. The Greatest Grain Yield&nbsp; award was won by Tom Carpenter of Bartley, Neb. The Perkins Group team from the Grant, Neb., area&nbsp; earned the Highest Input Use Efficiency award. The team was made up of Brent Gloy, Bruce Young, Curt&nbsp; Richmond, Jeremy Hagan, Nick Turner, Pat McGreer, Shawn Turner, Ted Tietjen, and Troy Kemling.&nbsp; Kenny Reinke of Neligh, Neb., won the award for Most Profitable.&nbsp;

The last award presented was the Outstanding TAPS Advocate, which honors an organization, person, or&nbsp; business that went above and beyond in supporting the UNL-TAPS program. This year, the award&nbsp; recipient was Tracy Zink of Indianola, Nebr. Since the moment Zink heard about the TAPS program, she&nbsp; has not only chosen to participate, but also to share what she has learned, invite others to join the program&nbsp; and promoted TAPS across many avenues that she engages in across the state and nationally.&nbsp;
