North Platte, Neb. - The Mid-Plains United Way is preparing to announce the 2024-2025 agency partners as the board is finalizing the last presentations from non-profits who submitted in an application. The new agencies will be announced sometime next week. As the campaign year ends, the united way is around $169,000 out of the $200,000 goal and making a last push effort. &nbsp;

Folks can now donate monthly if they like or May 8th is Giving Day which the united way will be a part of. As details become available, Mid-Plains United Way is preparing to host an event in June called human tractor pull. The event will run during NebraskaLand Days.&nbsp;

North Platte, Ne - The North Platte Police Department welcomed two new officers to their ranks on Friday. Officer Brian Smith and Officer Jesse Sutphin graduated in the 216th Graduation Class at the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center. Officers Smith and Sutphin have spent the last 16 weeks attending the training center to receive their law enforcement certification.

North Platte Police Department welcomes two new officers

North Platte, Neb. - Mid-Plains Community College (MPCC) North Platte location is hosting the Knights BBQ Cookoff on April 20th on the NPCC South Campus pavilion. Public activities will be available during the cookoff which are set to kick off at 4:00pm, 6:00pm is when the meal will be served and awards for the competition will take place at 7:30. Rascal Martinez, an alum of MPCC will be performing live music around 6:00pm.&nbsp;

MPCC numbers for the competition are low and are looking for anywhere from 5-15 teams to join the competition. If numbers remain low, the event will no longer have a competition but those in attendance will still receive a meal. &nbsp;(McCook, Neb.) — Weather permitting, a highway shouldering and seeding project will begin April 15 on N-23, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. Work will occur from reference post 18.29 to reference post 43.98, east of Grant from the N-61 junction to the Perkins-Lincoln County line.

State maintenance forces will be performing the work, which includes the grading and repair of the sod shoulders with seeding and mulching to follow. Traffic will be maintained with pilot car and flaggers. The work is anticipated to take 20 days.

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and put phones down.

North Platte, Neb. - The Prairie Arts Center (PAC) is gearing up with new events and classes for the month of April and beyond. The PAC is hosting a concert this Saturday as welcome Job, Peter and Chuck for a one night performance. The trio, which used to sing together is getting back together for the evening with their concert at the PAC called "You Can't Make Old Friends". 

The show is set to begin at 7:00pm and very few tickets remain, to purchase a ticket if still available, <a href="https://www.prairieartscenter.org/booking-calendar/you-can-t-make-old-friends-concert?referral=service_list_widget">click here</a>. APRIL 11, 2024 (NORTH PLATTE, NEB.) —Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested a Utah man after locating nearly five pounds of suspected fentanyl pills during a traffic stop in North Platte. Sunday, April 7, at approximately 11:00 p.m., a trooper observed a Kia SUV traveling without headlights or taillights on Jeffers Street north of Interstate 80. During the traffic stop, the trooper became suspicious of criminal activity. 

A search of the vehicle revealed multiple bags containing thousands of suspected fentanyl pills. The total weight of the pills was nearly five pounds. Troopers also located a handgun in the vehicle. 

The driver, Tyrone Cash, 38, of Spanish Fork, Utah, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to deliver, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He was lodged in Lincoln County.

Troopers Locate Thousands of Suspected Fentanyl Pills in North Platte

The nursing program at Mid-Plains Community College has been honored with an Outstanding Technical Program award from the&nbsp;American Technical Education Association.

The recognition came Thursday afternoon during the 61st ATEA National Conference in Wichita, Kan.

The selection was based on the nursing program’s many accomplishments in 2023. Those included a 100 percent pass rate by MPCC’s Associate Degree Nursing students on their NCLEX-RN exams and a 100 percent pass rate on the NCLEX-PN exams by the Licensed Practical Nursing students.

The achievements marked the first time in Mid-Plains’ history that both ADN and LPN students had received a 100 percent pass rate in the same year.&nbsp;

“As an employer, I look for well-educated and skilled nurses, which is exactly what MPCC produces,” said Linda Baldwin, chief nursing officer for Banner Health Ogallala Community Hospital in her endorsement letter of the MPCC nursing program for the ATEA award. “The new grads from this program are prepared with skills and knowledge that I have noted is far greater than from other nursing programs. The 2023 pass rate of 100 percent is a testament to the educators and the level of expectation they have for their students.”

Another factor that played a part in the ATEA selection was MPCC’s expansion of its Health and Science Center to meet an increased demand for more nurses and health care professionals throughout the college’s 18-county service area and beyond.

The expansion provided more space to train those professionals and included, among other amenities, a large, dividable nursing classroom, group study rooms, an EMS lab outfitted with an ambulance simulator, three nursing simulation rooms and an immersion room for training students in a variety of virtual reality simulated environments.

“Without MPCC, we would lose nursing students to larger cities,” said Tina Pate, chief nursing officer for Great Plains Health, in her endorsement of MPCC for the ATEA award. “While many community colleges will tout the same benefit of training local people to perform local jobs, the piece that sets Mid-Plains apart from other community colleges is their dedicated faculty. The faculty advocate for students, ensuring students graduate with the skills needed to professionally contribute to the nursing workforce.”

Lincoln, Neb. April 10, 2024 —The heartbeat of rural communities is their leadership. Recognizing this vital aspect of community wellbeing, Rural Prosperity Nebraska invites leaders of rural Nebraska to join in a new series of virtual gatherings aimed at fortifying community leadership development.

Following the success of the Leadership Chautauqua held in Kearney last fall, where over 100 community leaders converged for a day of enlightenment and collaboration, Rural Prosperity Nebraska is forging ahead with the next step in leadership development with three Zoom discussions throughout April.

“Our aim with these discussions is to share the key takeaways from the Chautauqua and to engage in a rich discussion about the future of Nebraska Extension and the roles we play in community leadership development,” said Tyler Quick, one of the Rural Prosperity Nebraska Extensions instructors organizing the discussion series. “We’ll also explore the innovative ideas that leaders have for the future of their communities, and how effective leadership can turn those aspirations into realities.”

The key areas of focus for the discussions include:

Lindsay Hastings, a professor of leadership development in the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communication department, said, “Ultimately, we wanted the Leadership Chautauqua to bring together peer networks of community leaders to have a robust think-tank discussion about CLD, and I think that was accomplished.”These virtual discussions are stemming out of and modeling themselves after that successful event, said Quick. They are not just about passive participation; they are meant to be dynamic forums for idea exchange and collaboration.“Be prepared to immerse yourself in a whirlwind of creativity and innovation as we chart the course for a brighter, more resilient rural Nebraska,” he added.All discussions are free, but registration is required by April 12. &nbsp; North Platte, Neb. - Over the next couple of weeks, you will see new artwork&nbsp;added to the downtown&nbsp;area.&nbsp; The Prairie Arts Center will bring Sculpture Walk Across Nebraska (SWAN) to North Platte this spring.&nbsp; The non-profit arts organization&nbsp;has been working with SWAN communities of Norfolk, Grand Island and artists from Wayne over the last year.&nbsp; PAC learned about the program two years ago, when they purchased a sculpture with a grant from Mid Nebraska Community Foundation by artist Mike Fluent through the&nbsp;Sculpture Walk Across Grand Island program.&nbsp; Since then, Sculpture Walk Across North Platte was created.&nbsp; 

The program allows communities to rent sculptures for one year.&nbsp; Community members can participate&nbsp;in a walking audio&nbsp;tour through Otocast, which connects listeners to an audio file of artists and communities talking about each project.&nbsp; This year five sculptures will arrive in the spring in North Platte.&nbsp; PAC worked in conjunction with the City of North Platte, The Downtown Association and the Canteen District on placement of the sculptures.&nbsp; You can log onto&nbsp;<a href="http://prairieartscenter.org/" target="_blank">prairieartscenter.org</a>&nbsp;for more information on&nbsp;sculpture placement.&nbsp;

Prairie Arts Center bringing in Sculpture Walk Across Nebraska to North Platte this spring

April 10, 2024 (McCook, Neb.) — Weather permitting, a mill and fill project will begin April 22 on US-136, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. Mill and fill is a process of removing deteriorated asphalt in preparation of placing an asphaltic patch to improve the roadway surface and drivability.

State maintenance forces will be performing a mill and fill from reference post 1.0 to reference post 2.0, starting at the north side of Edison. The work is anticipated to take three (3) days. Traffic will be maintained with a pilot car and flaggers.

&nbsp; North Platte, Neb. - From April 1st, 2024, through April 8th, 2024, The North Platte Police Department, in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) participated in the “U Drive U Text U Pay” law enforcement mobilization.&nbsp; 

During the mobilization, 116 traffic stops were conducted.&nbsp; Forty citations were issued to include; 14 citations for speeding, 7 for traffic control device violations, two for fictitious plates, and two for possession of marijuana.&nbsp; 

Two people were arrested for DUI.&nbsp; Two people were arrested on state warrants.&nbsp; Two felony drug arrests were made, and 2.5 grams of methamphetamine were seized.

NPPD issued 40 citations during "U Drive U Text U Pay" campaign

Students in the Commercial Driver Training program at Mid-Plains Community College will soon have a new tool to help them achieve success on the road.

MPCC purchased a VS600M truck simulator and school bus module from Virage Simulation that will save wear and tear on the college’s semi-trucks while still allowing students to practice and prepare for some of the many driving conditions they will experience in real-life situations.

The interactive simulated scenarios can be used to teach both basic and advanced driver training under a number of road, traffic and weather conditions. Special attention can be given to shifting, maneuvering in confined areas, energy efficient driving and hazard perception.

“It’s going to save on fuel and repairs to trucks and as well as be more environmentally friendly because it won’t be burning diesel and putting emissions out,” said Josh Young, MPCC Motor School program coordinator. “One of the biggest benefits is that we will be able to simulate scenarios that can’t be simulated in real life. We can emulate a front tire blowing out with this machine, and the steering wheel will literally jerk out of the student’s hands. Driving in icy and snowy conditions is also something that can now be practiced safely.”

Young traveled around the country trying different simulators to find the best one for MPCC. The model decided on had unique features that made it stand out above the rest.

“Probably the biggest difference between this one and the second-choice option was that if you’re shifting the Virage simulator and miss the shift, it vibrates and makes a grinding sound just like a real truck,” Young said. “This was the most realistic simulator of any that were tried.”

The Virage simulator is modeled on a standard truck cabin and is made of real truck parts. It consists of a fully functional pneumatic driver seat with typical controls, a seat belt, pedals and a fully adjustable steering column with integrated flashers and trailer hand brake.

A range of truck models – everything from dump trucks to highway tractor-trailers and semi-trailers – engine performances, transmission configurations, differentials and payloads can be imitated. Realistic vehicle behaviors can be reproduced under various loading conditions and the effects of gravity while driving on hills can be replicated.

The simulator has both automatic and manual transmissions and a multi-function touch display for a wide range of truck driver controls and applications.

The visual system is a key component. It has both a 180-degree forward field of view plus rear view mirrors. The system consists of three high-resolution LCD displays that allow objects to move smoothly and continuously across the panels without distortion.

Students can practice driving in city, highway, industrial, farmland and mountainous environments. A full range of road surfaces and adjustable weather conditions are included.

A state-of-the-art motion and vibration system not only enhances the immersive experience but also improves overall speed perception.

It provides cues for vehicle acceleration and deceleration, curves and obstacles such as sidewalks and pot holes. Vibrations from the tires on the replicated road surface change and are transmitted through the seat, steering wheel and simulator platform.

The simulator won’t replace any of the on-the-road training required through the college’s CDL program, but it will supplement the classroom instruction. Classes have been filling as soon as they are offered.

About 241,200 openings for heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers are projected each year, on average, until 2032, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Many of those openings are expected to result from retirement.

“The need is greater than ever, and there isn’t a huge amount of qualified drivers coming up,” Young said.

His goal is to mount the new simulator in a trailer so that it can be rolled out to all of the college’s campuses within MPCC’s 18-county service area.

“I would like to eventually be able to take it to high schools and get people interested in the truck driving industry at a younger age,” Young said. “We are also working with the trucking industry to enhance the skills of current drivers through behind-the-wheel training. A school bus module purchased with the simulator will allow us to partner with area schools for continuing education of their bus drivers.”

The total cost of the simulator and school bus module was $132,484, of that, $116,886 was provided by Perkins V state match funds. The funding includes instructor training on the simulator, preventative maintenance and online support.

Mid-Plains CDL program to add truck driving simulator

Ogallala, Neb. - On April 9, 2024, Ogallala Police Department were called to 411 West 6th Street regarding a young man who had been shot and unconscious. After arriving, Officers were able to determine that Jeremiah VanLinda appeared to have been shot by Chet Stenzel with a Mossberg International 715T semi-automatic rifle. Keith County EMS responded to the scene and informed officers there was no sign of life. The Ogallala Police Department is being assisted by the Nebraska State Patrol Investigative Team.

 After an initial investigation and discussion with witnesses, Chet Stenzel has been taken into custody for Murder in the 2nd degree along with other charges.&nbsp; If you have any information that could help law enforcement, please contact the Ogallala Police Department.&nbsp;

Keith County man being charged with 2nd degree murder according to officials

Union Pacific's famed&nbsp;<a href="http://www.up.com/up/heritage/steam/4014/index.htm" target="_blank">Big Boy No. 4014,</a>&nbsp;the world's largest steam locomotive, will return to the rails this summer with a scenic tour across mountain ranges and high desert vistas in four western states: Wyoming, Utah, Nevada and California.

The monthlong “Big Boy Westward Bound” tour, which starts June 30, will honor Union Pacific's rich railroad legacy and celebrate the railroad's employees and communities it serves. For part of its journey, the Big Boy's consist will include an assortment of rail cars giving spectators a glimpse into what the locomotive looked like pulling freight in its heyday.

“The Big Boy locomotive symbolizes the pivotal role railroads played in shaping our nation's history, and the technological advances we have witnessed within our industry,” said Union Pacific CEO Jim Vena. “We are thrilled to share this living piece of history with our employees and the public, and we love seeing the enthusiasm this locomotive generates wherever its whistle blows.”

Big Boy will journey from its home base in Cheyenne, Wyoming, en route to Roseville, California, before returning to Wyoming by the end of July. It will make numerous whistle-stops in communities along the way, with public display stops scheduled in:

This is one of two public tours planned for Big Boy in 2024, with a second tour planned later this fall with stops in Texas, Arkansas, Kansas, and Illinois, among other states. Details of the second tour will be released later this spring.

Union PacificUnion Pacific's famed&nbsp;<a href="http://www.up.com/up/heritage/steam/4014/index.htm" target="_blank">Big Boy No. 4014,</a>&nbsp;the world's largest steam locomotive, will return to the rails this summer with a scenic tour across mountain ranges and high desert vistas in four western states: Wyoming, Utah, Nevada and California.The monthlong “Big Boy Westward Bound” tour, which starts June 30, will honor Union Pacific's rich railroad legacy and celebrate the railroad's employees and communities it serves. For part of its journey, the Big Boy's consist will include an assortment of rail cars giving spectators a glimpse into what the locomotive looked like pulling freight in its heyday.“The Big Boy locomotive symbolizes the pivotal role railroads played in shaping our nation's history, and the technological advances we have witnessed within our industry,” said Union Pacific CEO Jim Vena. “We are thrilled to share this living piece of history with our employees and the public, and we love seeing the enthusiasm this locomotive generates wherever its whistle blows.”Big Boy will journey from its home base in Cheyenne, Wyoming, en route to Roseville, California, before returning to Wyoming by the end of July. Union Pacific's Famed 'Big Boy No. 4014' Preparing for Westward Summer Tour

Gothenburg, Neb. - High speed chase in Dawson County ends near Gothenburg according to the Dawson County Sheriffs Office.

According to officials, on April 8th, 2024, at approximately&nbsp;8:47 pm the Dawson County Sheriff's Office was advised of a vehicle driven by a male subject that was possibly armed with a firearm and had an active out-of-state warrant for a felony offense. Deputies located the vehicle near Gothenburg on Interstate 80, and attempted contact with the subject.

After a brief verbal exchange, the male subject fled in the vehicle where it came to a stop in the Gothenburg area. Deputies approached the vehicle where it then fled and struck a tree. The name of the individual involved is being withheld at this time due to an ongoing investigation by South Central Law Enforcement Services.

The Dawson County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Nebraska State Patrol, Gothenburg Police Department, Gothenburg Fire Department and Dawson County Emergency Management.
