North Platte, Neb. -&nbsp;North Platte Giving Day is scheduled for Wednesday May 8th 2024. Families 1st Partnership will be participating and asking for donations to help prepare inmates for release as they seek a new way of life outside of crime and incarceration. This has been identified as a need by 14 different community partners who currently provide support to those incarcerated.

Inmates who do not have a plan or positive support network upon their release will often return to the same lifestyle that got them involved with crime in the first place. The inmates in the Lincoln County Detention Center could benefit from extra help to start work on a support system that will encourage taking steps to prepare for release. Often the inmates seek a trustworthy and caring individual that can help them navigate the community resources available for their needs. There are already several mentors and organizations available to provide encouragement and support, but they are now working together to take this one step farther and help the inmates with the necessary steps required to obtain an ID, birth certificate, training, education, job placement and spiritual guidance.

The group, Strengthening Purpose for Inmates, formed when community partners saw this as a gap in the community. There are several organizations and community advocates that come together each month to discuss the obstacles and barriers of inmates who will re-entry to our society after a jail sentence is complete. They’ve taken steps to work on a network of support and communication. The missing item is funds to support some of the basic things needed at release. Your donations are appreciated.

Families 1st Partnership to focus Giving Day donations toward inmate re-entry needs.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Union Pacific's first-quarter profit crept 1% higher as the railroad tightened up on expenses — particularly its fuel bill — even though it delivered slightly less freight.

The Omaha, Nebraska-based railroad said Thursday it made $1.64 billion, or $2.69 per share. That's more than&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/union-pacific-railroad-first-quarter-earnings-economy-bf63a5eeadb902e901b8aed4d8975ff9">last year's $1.63 billion</a>, or $.2.67 per share, even though last year's numbers were helped by a 14-cent gain on a real estate sale. Shipping volume was down 1% in the quarter.

The analysts surveyed by FactSet Research were expecting earnings of $2.51 per share.

“When I look at how we’re performing, I see improvement across the board,” CEO Jim Vena said. “The network is operating fluidly and efficiently, allowing us to meet the demand in the market. And that drove the financial success.”

The railroad's revenue was hurt by a drop in fuel surcharge revenue as fuel prices fell. Union Pacific said it generated $6.03 billion in revenue, down slightly from last year's $6.06 billion. But that was better than the $5.97 billion that analysts expected.

Union Pacific was able to hold down expenses 3% at $3.66 billion. That included a 14% drop in fuel expenses to $658 million in the quarter as diesel prices fell and the railroad improved its fuel efficiency a bit.

Vena&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/union-pacific-railroad-ceo-jim-vena-06b2fbdf515e7f5aa8d82c0b2cafbc88">became CEO</a>&nbsp;last summer after&nbsp;<a href="https://static1.squarespace.com/static/60ad6c502b44e43fe7a303b9/t/63fbc01f43115a3c065fa353/1677443103154/Soroban+-+Letter+to+Union+Pacific%27s+Board+of+Directors.pdf">investors pressured</a>&nbsp;Union Pacific to replace its last leader. Its improved performance showed up in the quarter in the form of slightly longer trains — reaching an average of 9287 feet (2,831 meters) in the quarter — a 4% increase in freight car velocity, 4,000 fewer times railcars needed to be switched between trains, and better performance on what shippers want.

Some UP customers want the railroad to deliver their shipments faster while some don't care as much about speed and are more concerned about getting consistent deliveries. But the railroad is working to improve on both fronts.

“You always try to optimize the network operationally and look for ways to be able to drive efficiencies in the network. But the base plan always is, what did we sell to customers? What did we tell the customers we’re going to deliver? And make sure that that’s the base plan. And from that you build it up,” Vena said.

Edward Jones analyst Jeff Windau said the results showed “solid improvement in operational and efficiency metrics.” That will give the railroad a strong foundation for future profits when the number of shipments increases.

Union Pacific said its quarterly results have it feeling more optimistic about profit growth this year even though it still expects volume growth to be muted after losing some international intermodal business and its expectation for lower coal shipments. So it plans to restart its stock repurchases in the second quarter.

But UP executives cautioned that the economy remains uncertain as businesses and consumers wait to see whether the Federal Reserve will&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-prices-rates-economy-federal-reserve-biden-f02b969d1b44a7ccb0385be03f766de0">start cutting interest rates</a>.

Investor pressure on the railroads is in the spotlight this spring because an activist investor is&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/norfolk-southern-ancora-earnings-proxy-vote-shaw-f5383c8a2e2d87e215be48beb4e298b1">currently trying</a>&nbsp;to take control of Norfolk Southern and replace that railroad's management because its profits have lagged the rest of the industry. Vena said he doesn't shy away from that pressure because it's appropriate for shareholders to expect a return on their investment in the capitalist system.

“That’s the way business is,” Vena said. “The only reason an activist becomes involved somewhere is you’re just not performing to what you claim that you’ve been able to perform.”

UP is one of the nation’s largest railroads with more than 30000 miles (48,000 kilometers) of track crisscrossing 23 Western states.

(Audio) Comedy to the Rescue Fundrasier event this weekend

North Platte, Neb. – Great Plains Health is proud to announce its participation in the upcoming Stop the Bleed training day, a statewide event aimed at empowering individuals with life-saving skills to intervene during emergency situations involving severe bleeding. This community event will take place at the North Platte Recreation Center, 1300 McDonald Rd. North Platte, Neb., on May 8, from 7 to 9 a.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Stop the Bleed is an initiative designed to educate communities on the immediate steps&nbsp; to take when faced with traumatic injuries. By teaching basic bleeding control&nbsp; techniques, the program equips participants with the knowledge and tools necessary to&nbsp; potentially save lives before professional help arrives.&nbsp;

"We are excited to be part of the Stop the Bleed training day," said Kellie Mahanes,&nbsp; Great Plains Health trauma coordinator. "Empowering our community with these skills&nbsp; can make a substantial difference in emergency situations.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

During the event, attendees will have the opportunity to learn from certified instructors&nbsp; proper bleeding control techniques, including how to apply pressure, use tourniquets&nbsp; effectively, and keep the injured person alert and calm until emergency responders&nbsp; arrive. Great Plains Health encourages members of the community to attend this&nbsp; important event and become equipped with the knowledge and skills to save lives. Union Pacific Reports First Quarter 2024 Results

LINCOLN, NE –&nbsp;Governor Jim Pillen has signed 10 bills into law and announced his veto of a bill he says would harm Nebraska taxpayers.&nbsp;

Legislative Bill 25 would make taxpayers financially liable for lawsuits filed against towns, cities, school districts, public power districts and other local government units. Taxpayers would also be liable for broad claims of abuse committed by employees and non-employees of those public entities.

“We must hold perpetrators accountable and protect children from abuse by enforcing criminal laws that exist and by targeting wrong-doers, not taxpayers,” said Gov. Pillen. “There are civil remedies already available to children and their families that allow for compensation when harm results from abuse.”

Bills signed by the Governor include:&nbsp;LB126, LB126a, LB937, LB937a, LB1023, LB1023a, LB1317, LB1317a, LB1402, 1402a.&nbsp;

LB1317 and 1402 both have emergency clauses and are effective immediately.

North Platte joins the celebration for Nebraska Public Transit Week

McCook, Neb. - One man arrested after leading McCook PD, Nebraska State Patrol and Red Willow County Sherriff's office on a high speed chase with his motorcycle on Tuesday evening.

On April 23, 2024, at approximately 8:13 pm, McCook Police attempted to initate a traffic stop of a motorist on a motorcycle. The motorist failed to yield and attempted to elude the office by fleeing at a high rate of speed. McCook Police initiated a pursuit which headed east out of McCook.

McCook Police called for assistance from the Nebraska State Patrol and the Red Willow County Sherriff's Office to assist in the pursuit. The motorist continued east passing through Indianola, NE. At mile marker 103 on US Highway 6 &amp; 34, the motorist turned around and headed west traveling back through Indianola.&nbsp;

The motorist, all the while, continued to travel at a very high rate of speed. The motorist continued to travel west until the motorcycle experienced a blown rear tire and came to a stop at approximately mile marker 91 on US Highway 6&nbsp; &amp; 34 where the motorist surrendered to police. Neither the motorist nor the officers reported any injuries.

The motorist, Alcide Baudlon, was arrested on suspicion of several charges including willful reckless driving, felony flight to avoid arrest and an outstanding warrant for his arrest. He was lodged in Red Willow County jail pending an initial court appearance.

McCook Police DepartmentMcCook, Neb. - One man arrested after leading McCook PD, Nebraska State Patrol and Red Willow County Sherriff's office on a high speed chase with his motorcycle on Tuesday evening.On April 23, 2024, at approximately 8:13 pm, McCook Police attempted to initate a traffic stop of a motorist on a motorcycle. The motorist failed to yield and attempted to elude the office by fleeing at a high rate of speed. McCook Police initiated a pursuit which headed east out of McCook.McCook Police called for assistance from the Nebraska State Patrol and the Red Willow County Sherriff's Office to assist in the pursuit. The motorist continued east passing through Indianola, NE. At mile marker 103 on US Highway 6 &amp; 34, the motorist turned around and headed west traveling back through Indianola.&nbsp;The motorist, all the while, continued to travel at a very high rate of speed. The motorist continued to travel west until the motorcycle experienced a blown rear tire and came to a stop at approximately mile marker 91 on US Highway 6&nbsp; &amp; 34 where the motorist surrendered to police. Neither the motorist nor the officers reported any injuries. &nbsp; (Lincoln, Neb.) EducationQuest Foundation presented Cozad High School with the American College Application Campaign’s (ACAC) Nebraska School of Excellence Award at its recent biennial Symposium in Lincoln.

EducationQuest is the coordinator of ACAC in Nebraska, which is called Apply2College.EducationQuest’s Omaha College Planning Director Joan Jurek, who leads Nebraska’s Apply2College effort, said, “This prestigious recognition reflects Cozad High School’s commitment to breaking down barriers and creating a supportive environment where all students are encouraged to pursue their dreams. The award is a powerful affirmation of our shared mission to empower every student to reach their full potential through education."

The ACAC is a national effort to increase the number of first-generation college students and students from low-income families who want to pursue a higher education credential or college degree. For the fourth year, the national organization has recognized and selected Schools of Excellence based on their demonstrated commitment to student success and for serving as a model for their state’s college application campaign.

In 2023, 125 Nebraska high schools hosted an Apply2College event. Nearly 3,100 students participated, and more than 6,500 college applications were submitted.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Podcast - Velvet Spurs Postpone Horseback Poker run to May 4 at Ash Hollow

The North Platte Police Department participated in a High Visibility Drug Impaired Driving Enforcement Mobilization from April 19th through April 21st.  A total of 25 traffic contacts were made.  One arrest was made for Possession of a Controlled Substance. 

 One citation was issued for violation of a traffic signal, one driver was cited for careless driving and exhibition of speed.  Two citations were issued for no insurance.  Two citations were issued for no valid registration and one citation was issued for no operator’s license.&nbsp;&nbsp;

North Platte, Neb. - The North Platte Police Department is joining the Nebraska Department of Transportation in taking a stand against speeding. Agencies and organizations across the state are asking motorists to watch their speed by joining their voices together in a public education campaign to emphasize how following posted speed limits is critical to driver, passenger, pedestrian and cyclist safety. Beginning April 22, 2024, you’ll be seeing messages related to “Speeding Awareness Week” on social media, and dynamic message signs throughout the state.&nbsp;

As traffic volumes continue to grow, speeding has become a serious issue. These two factors, speeding and high volumes, have resulted in a staggering number of speeding tickets. Because excessive speeding is an issue across the country, area agencies are hoping to combat the problem via an educational campaign before traffic volumes increase even more during the spring and summer months.

Excessive speeds puts lives at risk &amp; impacts people outside the vehicle as well.&nbsp; Chances of a pedestrian surviving an accident decrease incrementally as speeds increase.&nbsp; At 20 mph there is a 10% chance of fatality, at 30 mph a 40% chance and at 40 mph there is an 80% chance of fatality.&nbsp;

04/23 City of Grant City Council Meeting Agenda

LINCOLN —&nbsp;The University of Nebraska Board of Regents is poised to meet Friday and could consider the final candidacy of Dr. Jeffrey Gold as NU’s ninth system president.

Phil Bakken, the board’s corporation secretary, announced late Sunday that Gold’s appointment could be considered this week at a 1 p.m. meeting Friday, if all feedback is reviewed in time. The announcement comes just in time for regents to meet under the Nebraska Open Meetings Act, which requires five days’ public notice.

Last week, Gold visited&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2024/04/17/you-can-make-magic-happen-university-of-nebraska-presidential-finalist-makes-pitch-to-campuses/">each of NU’s campuses across nine forums</a>&nbsp;and will visit Curtis, North Platte and Scottsbluff for three more forums this Wednesday as follows:

“While today’s notice allows for the consideration of the President Priority Candidate’s appointment, no action will be taken until all feedback received (has) been reviewed,” Bakken wrote Sunday.

The review must include the Wednesday forums and online comments at&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://nebraska.edu/president-search">nebraska.edu/president-search</a>. Feedback can be submitted through Thursday.

Friday’s meeting agenda includes Gold’s proposed contract of employment. A university spokesperson said the contract might not be available until Thursday.&nbsp;

 </ul>“While today’s notice allows for the consideration of the President Priority Candidate’s appointment, no action will be taken until all feedback received (has) been reviewed,” Bakken wrote Sunday.The review must include the Wednesday forums and online comments at&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://nebraska.edu/president-search">nebraska.edu/president-search</a>. Feedback can be submitted through Thursday.Friday’s meeting agenda includes Gold’s proposed contract of employment.
