North Platte, Neb. - NPIce concluded their second year with great successful. NPIce offered public skating, hockey lessons, drop-in hockey, learn to skate and residents and surrounding communities took notice and made the trip out to the rink in North Platte.&nbsp;&nbsp;

NPIce is already looking ahead for the 2023-2024 winter season and has sponsorships and project goals ready to go. A goal project goal that NPIce has been thinking about is adding a cover over the rink. During Feb. we seen a few days where the warm weather caused the ice to melt. NPIce will be a part of Giving Day on May 8th, planning on doing more dine out days and also having a glo ball golf tournament in North Platte.&nbsp;

Lincoln, NE – April 5, 2024 – Due to high sales, the Multi-State Lottery Association has increased the estimated jackpot amount for the Saturday, April 6 Powerball drawing to $1.3 billion or $608.9 million with the cash option selected.

The Powerball jackpot starts at $20 million and continues to grow each drawing until it is won. There have been 40 consecutive Powerball drawings since January 3 without a jackpot winner.

Ten jackpots ranging from $2.5 million to $365 million have been won in Nebraska since the Nebraska Lottery began offering Powerball in July of 1994. The largest Powerball jackpot won in Nebraska occurred in February 2006 when a group of eight coworkers at the ConAgra Foods ham and corned beef plant in Lincoln split a $365 million jackpot.

Spring is here — and with it, opportunities of all kinds to enjoy the outdoors. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation or the chance to learn new skills, you can find it at a Nebraska state park. Here are some activities you can start enjoying now.

Take in the fresh breezes and spring colors on a hiking trail. Nebraska’s state parks have a variety of trails, including gentle walking paths and rugged mountain biking trails. If you want to watch birds during your trek, visit Wildcat Hills State Recreation Area in western Nebraska, which boasts a diverse range of species. The park also has a nature center perfect for a break after your walk.

Other parks with beautiful trails in spring include Chadron State Park, with its ponderosa pine scenery, and Niobrara State Park in northeastern Nebraska, where you can catch stunning sunset views on the bluffs overlooking the river. Birding is a great spring activity, as Nebraska is a prime spot during spring migration. Opportunities include wild turkeys and hundreds of songbirds returning to the state from their winter homes.

Other spring wildlife watching opportunities include red fox kits, which are usually born in March and April and will emerge from their dens around four to five weeks after birth. You can also hear frogs calling statewide anywhere there is water, and many snake species will begin emerging from their dens in April, as well. Bring some binoculars, keep a healthy distance, be patient and you might see some amazing sights.

Spring is go-time for anglers. Everybody wants to be out fishing in April and May as there are so many opportunities, especially as the water warms up.

While you can find good fishing for just about any species, crappie and walleye will be especially favorable. Crappie can be found statewide in shallow water where they’re easy to access. As for walleye, they’re “king” in May and June, said fisheries biologist Daryl Bauer. Seek out large reservoirs, like those in the central and western part of the state, for the best walleye fishing.

Camping in spring allows you to beat the summer rush and avoid the heat. While you can find great camping at many Nebraska state parks, division administrator Bob Hanover pointed out a few that are particularly good this time of year.

One is Memphis State Recreation Area, located between Lincoln and Omaha. This small, lesser-known park offers a quiet atmosphere to relax in, a recently renovated lake, and a large campground with dozens of mature shade trees.

Hanover also recommended parks located by Nebraska’s southwestern reservoirs, such as Medicine Creek, Enders and Swanson state recreation areas, for a back-to-nature atmosphere. Louisville State Recreation Area in the east is another good pick in the spring, before summer crowds arrive.

If you’re looking to unwind for an afternoon lunch with friends or family, look no farther than your closest state park. By May, you can enjoy great picnicking in every park area; all have picnic tables, and most have shade and picnic shelters.

Hanover especially recommended Victoria Springs State Recreation Area, a peaceful spot near the Sandhills with plenty of Nebraska history, and Windmill State Recreation Area, located between Grand Island and Kearney. Both are quiet areas where you can enjoy nature in a calm setting.&nbsp;

Spring is an opportune time to look for wildflowers because they’re easy to spot; in summer, they’re competing with tall grasses and may be harder to see.

Botanist Gerry Steinauer recommends looking for violets in spring; a range of species can be found across the state. You can also look for prairie daisies in the west, at places like Fort Robinson State Park and Wildcat Hills State Recreation Area. Ready for a relaxing afternoon enjoying nature with family and friends? Try some disc golf. Hanover recommended several state parks for this; one is Fort Kearny State Recreation Area — easily accessible off the interstate, with a nice course and good camping.

Indian Cave State Park is another choice spot, with gorgeous springtime scenery and mushroom hunting opportunities. Eugene T. Mahoney State Park also offers a nice disc golf course and many other activities for guests. Archery and shooting sports are a fun way to challenge yourself and learn new skills. Nebraska offers several facilities with equipment, instruction and a family-friendly environment.

Turpin Outdoor Education Center in Lincoln is open year-round, with regularly scheduled programming for both newbies and advanced students. Platte River State Park’s Outdoor Heritage Education Complex opens in May, as does the Wildcat Hills Shooting Sports Complex. The new Kearny Outdoor Education Complex is open on weekends from April 6 to May 12, and then on weekdays through Sept. 16.

You also can practice on your own at Ponca State Park’s Eric Wiebe Shooting Complex or nearly 20 outdoor archery ranges, one shotgun range and two rifle ranges across the state. Lincoln County Sheriff's Department

At 3:30 PM on Thursday, the Lincoln County Dispatch received a phone call from Ashley Harvey.&nbsp; She advised that she had driven into the canal and was floating down the canal with her son. &nbsp;She said that they were setting on the roof of the car and the car was sinking.&nbsp; She told dispatch that she was near the intersection of Wagon Trail Road and NPPD Canal Road.&nbsp; 

Dispatch quickly notified the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, the State Patrol, EMS, the North Platte Dive Team and the Sutherland Dive Team.&nbsp; She said that her husband, Dillon had just arrived.&nbsp; Dispatch lost contact with her.

When deputies arrived, they found Ashley and her son standing on Canal Road, adjacent to the canal.&nbsp; Sgt Hanna helped Dillon care for them until EMS arrived to check them out medically.&nbsp; As a result of the investigation, it was determined that Ashley had taken her son for a ride in the car in an attempt to get him to sleep.&nbsp; They had both been awake since 3 AM because the child was having difficulty sleeping.&nbsp; Ashley said that she must have fallen asleep.&nbsp;

When she woke up her vehicle was going down the very steep bank into the canal.&nbsp; She quickly went to the back seat where her son was.&nbsp; She had a glass breaker and her cell phone in her purse.&nbsp; She broke out the back window with the glass breaker and was able to get her son and her purse onto the roof of the vehicle. &nbsp;While floating down the canal she was able to call 911.&nbsp; At the same time, Dillon was receiving notification from the vehicle that it had been involved in a crash.&nbsp; 

The notification also pinpointed the location of the crash, so he was the first to the scene because they live a short distance away from the accident.&nbsp; He reported that as the vehicle was going fully under the water his wife leaped toward the bank as hard as she could and then was able to swim close enough to the bank that he could reach them both and pull them from the current.&nbsp;

Both victims were examined by EMS.&nbsp; It was determined that the only injury to either of them was a scratch on the boy’s forehead.&nbsp; The dive teams worked with Al’s Towing of Hershey to remove the GMC Terrain from the canal.&nbsp; The location of the accident is 7 miles west and 3 miles south of North Platte.&nbsp;

Pinning for MPCC Associate Degree Nursing students is May 10

LINCOLN, NEB. – This week Nebraska’s State FFA Convention brought hundreds of FFA students and their advisors from across the state to Lincoln. Each year the Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation selects two recipients for their FFA Advisor of the Year award. This award honors FFA advisors for outstanding work in their local communities.

David Gibbens from West Holt Public Schools and Kris Rut from Arthur County Public Schools were honored at the Nebraska State FFA Convention on Thursday, April 4, in Lincoln. The winning advisors received a plaque and a $1,000 donation to their FFA chapter.

The teachers were nominated by their students and chosen based upon their school and community involvement, leadership development in their classroom, and their ability to keep their students involved in agriculture.

“The Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation is proud to support these exceptional educators. They go above and beyond for their students and the industry they love, and the future of Nebraska agriculture is bright thanks to their work,” said Megahn Schafer, executive director of the Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation.

Gibbens is the FFA Advisor for the West Holt FFA Chapter. The West Holt community describes Gibbens as “the guy on top of things.” Gibbens strives to help students find success in and out of the classroom. He has helped students created five school-based businesses, led countless career development event teams to states and nationals, and has helped grow chapter membership to the highest it has been in 30 years. Gibbens commitment to developing students into capable leaders in order to better the community is unmatched.

“'I am humbled to be named the Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation Advisor of the year. FFA Advisors across the state put in countless hours and work&nbsp;to develop members into future leaders of our communities and state. I am honored to receive&nbsp;this honor when so many are deserving,” said Gibbens.

Rut is the FFA Advisor for the Arthur FFA Chapter. Rut is incredibly integrated into her FFA chapter and community. She pushes her students to serve others through community outreach and stretch themselves professionally by trying new opportunities. While Rut has led many career development event teams to success, her students truly value that she defines success in unique ways: when they correctly dissect a calf, or decorate a Christmas tree for veterans, or restoring a community Mother-of-the-Year garden. Her commitment to bettering her students and community is evident.

Each year the Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation selects two recipients for their FFA Advisor of the Year award. This award honors FFA advisors for outstanding work in their local communities.David Gibbens from West Holt Public Schools and Kris Rut from Arthur County Public Schools were honored at the Nebraska State FFA Convention on Thursday, April 4, in Lincoln. The winning advisors received a plaque and a $1,000 donation to their FFA chapter.The teachers were nominated by their students and chosen based upon their school and community involvement, leadership development in their classroom, and their ability to keep their students involved in agriculture.“The Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation is proud to support these exceptional educators. The Nebraska Attorney General’s Office is issuing a Consumer Alert regarding an increase in Family Emergency Scams in Nebraska.

The Family Emergency, or Grandparents Scam, involves scammers reaching out to Nebraskans by phone and text with emotionally gripping stories and an urgent need for money. Scammers know you are more likely to give money to someone you trust, so they pose as family members in crisis.

These scams are a form of Imposter Scams. According to the FTC, Imposter Scams were the top reported fraud category last year, with more than 850,00 reports from consumers, and 21% of these reported a dollar loss.

Scammers may also pose as authority figures, like a bail bondsman, hospital representative, attorney, or police officer, requesting money on behalf of your family member.

This is an opportunity for children ages 3 to 21 with little or no dental insurance to receive care at no cost. Children will be seen at Gordon Memorial Hospital and Life Smiles in Sidney.

“This will be the 20th year Dental Days has been offered in the Panhandle and providing important care for area kiddos. There are several partners that bring this event to fruition including local dentists, school nurses, hospitals, community volunteers, Open Plains Transit, and UNMC,” said Janelle Visser of Panhandle Public Health District (PPHD). Visser is one of the coordinators behind the annual event.

Gering Police are in search of a man who is a suspect in an assault with a hammer.&nbsp;

Panhandle Post is told that the man is described as a 5'8 Hispanic man who Police say drove away from the 1800 block of 20th street in Gering NE on Wednesday before a 911 call was made at the residence.

Any residents in the area of 20th and R street in Gering, NE that may have video footage they are willing to share, or information about the incident, and are asked to contact the Gering Police Dept at 308 436 5089.
