WASHINGTON, D.C. –&nbsp;Today, U.S. Senator Pete Ricketts announced his constituent casework team has held Mobile Office Hours in all 93 Nebraska counties. Ricketts is also launching a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ricketts.senate.gov/mobileofficehours/">new website feature</a>&nbsp;that allows Nebraskans to request a Mobile Office Hours event in their county, city, or town.

“I’m proud the Mobile Office Hours program has provided Nebraskans in all 93 counties a chance to meet with our team in locations where we don’t have a permanent office,”&nbsp;said Senator Ricketts. “When the federal government fails to fulfill essential services, our constituent casework staff is here to help. I promised to ensure taxpayers would receive the kind of effective and responsive service they deserve from my team. Mobile Office Hours is one way we are fulfilling that commitment, and we look forward to continuing the events next year.”

At Mobile Office Hours, Ricketts’ staff are on-site to assist Nebraskans with their casework needs. If Nebraskans can’t get an answer from the federal bureaucracy in a timely manner or feel they have been treated unfairly, Ricketts and his staff may be able to help resolve the issue or help them contact the correct officials.

For example, a Nebraska veteran who attended our Adams County Mobile Office Hours needed assistance appealing his Department of Veterans Affairs disability rating. After meeting with our team, we were able to connect him with three different Service Officers who could help. Our office tracked the progress of his case and ensured he was able to successfully appeal his rating to get the benefits he needed.

The Hot Sheets: December 5th, 2023

The Nebraska State Patrol is currently investigating a death of an inmate at the Scotts Bluff County Detention Center.

Scotts Bluff County Attorney Dave Eubanks said in Monday press release that an adult male inmate was found unresponsive on Friday at about 6:30 p.m. at the Detention Center.

Officers performed CPR and used an AED in attempts to revive the male, who was transported to Regional West Medical Center by Valley Ambulance.

Medical staff declared the male dead at approximately 8:00 p.m. on Friday.

Eubanks says that because this was an in-custody death, Nebraska law requires a grand jury investigation.

&nbsp;An autopsy took place Monday morning, and the investigation is ongoing.

&nbsp;It is reported that the man was alone in a cell at the time of this occurrence.&nbsp; At this time, authorities say there is no sign of foul play or self-harm.

The man’s identity is withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.

Post News Director Canon Rath chatted with Lenny Hassel about the upcoming North Platte Elks Lodge #985&nbsp;Hoop Shoot that's taking place this Sunday.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - The North Platte Elks Lodge #985 is hosting their annual Hoop Shoot challenge this upcoming Sunday at Adams Middle School in North Platte. The event is for ages 8-13 (age determined as of April 1st, 2024) and is free to participate. Doors will open around 12:30pm for sign ups. Girls will shoot at 1:00pm and boys will shoot at 2:00pm. Each shooter will have 25 free throw attempts. 

This is a national tournament where contestants who win will move on the Cozad for the next round. If you would like to learn a more in-depth of the event, check out the podcast above.&nbsp;

Dundy County Sheriff's Office/Nebraska State Patrol

On Wednesday, November 29th, 2023, at approximately 8:00 am, Dundy County Communications received a 911 call in reference to a two-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 61 near the Kansas State Line. Once Dundy County Sheriff's Office Deputies arrived at the scene, they observed that 2 commercial motor vehicles had collided, and 1 driver had facial injuries.&nbsp;

The driver was then transported to Dundy County Hospital by Benkelman EMS. Once Dundy County interim Sheriff Ryan King arrived at the scene, it was observed that one of the commercial Motor Vehicle's was owned by DHW Energy, and wanting to make sure that there would be no conflict of interest due to a close friendship with the owner of DHW Energy, it was decided to contact the Nebraska State Patrol to investigate the accident. This is the media release the Dundy County Sheriff's Office received from NSP in order to be transparent with the public.

Nebraska State Patrol Press Release below:

"On this date (Nov. 29th) at approximately 0940 hours, NSP was asked to assist Dundy County with the two vehicle CMV collision on Hwy 61 approximately mile marker 1. Due to the Sheriff's relationship with one of the drivers, NSP was asked by the Sheriff to handle the crash to prevent a possible appearance of conflictive interest.&nbsp;

At approximately 0930 hours, a fuel tender was traveling south bound on Hwy 61. A TT/ST hauling grain was traveling a distance behind it at the time. The tender approached the intersection of Road 702 and applied its brakes and turned on its left turn signal.

The driver of the TT/ST decided to try and pass the tender on the left side at the intersection causing the two vehicles to collide. The driver of the tender was flown to Denver for evaluation/observation but he did not appear to have any serious injury when he was transported to the local hospital. 

The transport to Denver was a precaution since the driver has some visible bruising on his head. The driver of the TT/ST did not appear to have any injuries at the time of the crash. He was cited and a level lll reflected the citation which was issued."

This accident was a big undertaking by multiple agencies including Benkelman EMS, Benkelman Fire Department, Nebraska Department of Roads, Kansas Department of Transportation, Tri State Towing and Sinners Towing to clean up this accident site.

DCSO responds to two vehicle injury accident on HWY 61

(North Platte, Nebraska) – With the holiday season upon us, the Tourism Advisory Council (TAC) of North Platte has decided to continue our tradition of gifting two employees of a tourism driven business a basket of goodies to help them put together their holiday feasts! Each business that is a member of TAC puts in the name of one employee or volunteer from their organization that they would like to gift a meal to. These names are drawn, and one Thanksgiving basket is given, and one Christmas basket is given. The recipient of the Thanksgiving basket is a volunteer of the North Platte Pow Wow and received their meal the week of Thanksgiving. The recipient of the Christmas basket is an employee of the Best Western Plus and will be delivered the week of Christmas.&nbsp;

The purpose of the Tourism Advisory Council is to advance the tourism industry in the City of North&nbsp; Platte/Lincoln County. We raise the standard and upgrade the economy of the tourism/lodging industry and maintain a front-line training program for all front-line employees because they all have a direct&nbsp; influence on tourism traffic. We also encourage and maintain truthfulness and fair play in advertising&nbsp; and general business practices, and we try to bring about a better public understanding of the aims and&nbsp; benefits of the tourism industry. The recipient of the Thanksgiving basket is a volunteer of the North Platte Pow Wow and received their meal the week of Thanksgiving. The recipient of the Christmas basket is an employee of the Best Western Plus and will be delivered the week of Christmas.&nbsp;The purpose of the Tourism Advisory Council is to advance the tourism industry in the City of North&nbsp; Platte/Lincoln County. We raise the standard and upgrade the economy of the tourism/lodging industry and maintain a front-line training program for all front-line employees because they all have a direct&nbsp; influence on tourism traffic. We also encourage and maintain truthfulness and fair play in advertising&nbsp; and general business practices, and we try to bring about a better public understanding of the aims and&nbsp; benefits of the tourism industry. We are continually working to establish a forum where ideas,&nbsp; information, and experience regarding the tourism industry can be exchanged to help better us all.&nbsp;When we all work together to increase tourism within our community and to educate people about the benefits that tourism has on our community, we are more successful. It takes a lot of hard-working individuals to keep every business of TAC not only running but succeeding. That is why it is important to us that we recognize one of these individuals by gifting them this holiday basket. We would like to wish happy holidays to not only the recipient of this gift, but to everyone involved in this community. We wouldn’t be able to do what we do without all of you!&nbsp;

 <li>The base should be sawed off about one inch above the original cut, and the base placed in a container of water.  Sprinkling or misting the branches and needles will also help retain freshness.&nbsp; </li>

 <li>If the tree is bought several days before it is to be decorated, it should be stored outside in a cool, shaded area.&nbsp;</li>
 </ol><ol>
 <li>The base of the tree should be kept in water throughout the entire period that the tree is in use.  Research has indicated that no water additives are needed, but it is critical that the tree’s base is not allowed to dry.&nbsp;</li>
 </ol><ol>
 <li>When displaying the tree, be sure the stand is strong enough to support the tree.&nbsp;</li>
 </ol><ol>
 <li>Be sure the tree is placed away from sources of heat.  Trees do not cause fires but will support combustion when they cease to take up water and become dry.&nbsp;</li>
 </ol><ol>
 <li>Do not leave tree lights on unless someone is at home.&nbsp;</li>

 <li>Trees should be removed prior to becoming overly dry.  The longer the tree is indoors, the greater the risk of it drying due to loss of moisture.&nbsp;</li>

Caring for a Christmas Tree after Purchase 

(LINCOLN, NEB.) — The Property Assessment Division announces that pursuant to&nbsp; Neb. Rev. Stat. § 77-421(2), due to a vacant county assessor office, a county assessor certification&nbsp; examination (examination) will be held at a time different from February, May, August, and November examinations. Emergency County Assessor/Deputy County Assessor  Examination 

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The head of the union that represents track maintenance workers says Union Pacific is jeopardizing safety by delaying nearly 1,200 planned projects until next year and laying off more than 1,000 workers, but the railroad says the seasonal move shouldn't be alarming.

The president of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division union has been sending letters to regulators for more than a month raising concerns about the layoffs, but the the Surface Transportation Board hasn't intervened.

“Chaos and disruption with Union Pacific’s Maintenance of Way forces can only lead to one outcome — deferred maintenance and catastrophic outcomes,” Tony Cardwell, who leads the union, said in his letters. “These furloughs will affect the safety of Union Pacific operations and pose serious safety risks for the general public and the communities surrounding Union Pacific’s infrastructure.”

Union Pacific said the decision to delay these projects is a reflection of the fact that the railroad went over budget after dealing with several unexpected weather events like the tropical storm that hit California this year and last summer's extreme heat. The railroad said it remains committed to safety and improving its track network across the western U.S.

Members of Congress proposed&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ohio-train-derailment-congress-6288cdfb0b4381de4c9bfb05199b8ba6">reforms</a>&nbsp;but those have&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/east-palestine-train-derailment-safety-regulations-railroad-4db52c68daf68da05425b5b70363fb0a">largely stalled</a>.

Cardwell said that after these layoffs of 1,350 workers UP will have only a little over 4,700 track maintenance workers. Back in 2015 before a series of cuts designed to make the railroad more efficient, Union Pacific employed 8,791. That means each maintenance worker will now have about 11 miles (17.7 kilometers) of track to take care of on average, up from 8.6 last year and 6.5 in 2016.

The union is concerned that these cuts are an indication of how tightly&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/union-pacific-ceo-jim-vena-railroad-23365ccd844a91a7ba9d0cfd6b36fe0b">new CEO Jim Vena</a>&nbsp;plans to manage the railroad's expenses. Union Pacific, like all the major freight railroads, already made significant cuts in its workforce over the past several years as part of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-aab7d3084a8d17d8d721d2cb750be323">overhauling its operations</a>&nbsp;to rely more on fewer, longer trains. Last month, Union Pacific announced plans to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/union-pacific-railroad-management-layoffs-d72058d3154289e26c732492748bd452">trim the ranks</a>&nbsp;of its mangers across the railroad to help streamline decision making.

Union Pacific hasn't done large year-end layoffs of maintenance workers like this in several years, according to the union, although these jobs were originally listed as seasonal positions.

Union Pacific spokeswoman Clarissa Beyah said the actual number of furloughs will be smaller than the union fears because many workers take other jobs with the railroad and some workers may have enough vacation time saved up to cover the period.

“Accusations that Union Pacific does not invest in its infrastructure and maintenance are untrue," Beyah said. "This year alone, the railroad will spend $3.7 billion on capital investment, of which a significant portion is allotted for maintenance. As part of the capital planning process, we are temporarily reducing some seasonal track maintenance positions.”

The railroad said its workers have already replaced more than 3 million railroad ties and more than 400 miles of track across the railroad this year.

And even though these maintenance workers will be out of work during the holiday season, Union Pacific said it continues to hire train crews in certain locations as part of its effort to improve service and make sure it can handle all the shipments companies hire the railroad to deliver. At last report, Union Pacific had more than 33,000 employees in October before these layoffs began.

OHS One-Act Team placed 1st at the Southwest Conference Play Production Contest on Tuesday. They also took home the Outstanding Actress award, Lauren Henning, and the Outstanding Actor award, Michael Tophoj. 

Seven others received outstanding performance awards: Tyler Wang, Anica Bush, Kaden Walker, Erica Hesser, Jasmine, Biel, Isabel Rodriguez, and Lillian Holthusen. The group will travel to Gothenburg on Saturday to compete in the District B-6 contest.

Garan Coons demonstrates the men’s fancy dance during a performance Thursday afternoon in North Platte. Coons is Oglala Lakota and Navajo. He is also a dancer, singer, flute player and storyteller and the founder of the Native American Many Moccasins Dance Troupe.

Coons, his children and his mother were hosted by Mid-Plains Community College. They also performed earlier in the day in McCook in honor of Native American Heritage Month.
