Several students from Adams Middle School auditioned for and were selected to participate in the semi-annual “Singing Youth of Nebraska” Honor Choir, sponsored by the Nebraska Choral Directors Association. Almost 300 students in grades 7-8-9 auditioned. This event will be held in Kearney on January 27, 2024. Students will rehearse choral music throughout the day with a nationally known choral director, and will present a concert in the afternoon.

Selected students are: Amelia Bruck, Keirra Forden, Lydia Jenny, Cameron Bertschinger, Jarek Guenthner, Laci North, Taylor Race, Clark Odle , Kadia Lleras, Ezri Bay and Kamryn Thompson.&nbsp;

The Nebraska Choral Directors Association was founded in 1962, just 3 years after our parent organization, the American Choral Directors Association. NCDA is a non-profit professional organization whose membership is composed of choral musicians from schools, colleges, universities, churches, community and professional groups. As a chapter of the national organization, NCDA members are among 18,000 directors representing more than one million singers across the United States.

Area first responders honored with Great Plains Health Awards

NORTH PLATTE - Eagle Media on behalf of the Schmidt Foundation, donated $5,000 to the Lincoln County CASA last week.&nbsp;

The Lincoln County CASA has been serving the county for 11 years and has helped 150 children. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is a non-profit, volunteer organization that advocates for foster kids during their court proceedings. "We can advocate for things that a child really needs when in care," said Deirdre Nichelson.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The non-profit organization is already limited in the funds they receive. With the donation from the Schmidt Foundation, the money will be used to help train more volunteers. "It enables us to be able to train more volunteers, to recruit more volunteers, each one of the people that come into our organization and want to advocate for children have to be vetted and they have to be properly trained to do so," said Nichelson. "The more people that we can have that will go through that process to be advocates, then the more children in Lincoln County we can help."&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - The Connection Homeless Shelter in North Platte is getting ready to wrap up the Out of the Box Challenge with the final presentations going on November 16th at Brigham's Taproom. Participants will be bringing their house to the Taproom at 5:00pm and guests can vote on which one is the best. During the evening event, there will be a big specials announcement made.&nbsp;

LINCOLN — A storied Nebraska ranch — which grabbed national attention for its quirky name, size and whopping price tag — will live on in the hands of locals who have their own deep Sandhills roots.

Indeed, the two new owners of Dumbbell Ranch, who split the 15,500 acres in a $16.5 million purchase deal, reside on bordering family ranches.

Each has fond and personal memories of the Dumbbell, a founding ranch of the Nebraska Sandhills that’s situated in Cherry and Grant Counties.

Former State Sen. Al Davis of Hyannis claimed the larger part of the transaction — rangeland that had separated pieces of his own family’s OLO Ranch that also dates back to the late 1880s.

Davis had been interested since&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://hallhall.com/property-for-sale/nebraska/dumbbell-ranch/a095d00002U10JQ/">advertising began earlier this year,</a>&nbsp;noting the rarity of abutting property coming up for sale. Plus, he said, there’s a sentimental value.

“This is all a big neighborhood,” Davis said, stirring memories of his younger days when he’d visit the “big house” on the Dumbbell grounds. “When I was a kid we had card parties, rotating from ranch to ranch.”&nbsp;

Chris Gentry, the other buyer, penned an article for the local newspaper about his family’s historical ties to “The Great Dumbell Ranch.” It was written many months before the property hit the market.

“I begin this tale because of a street address,” Gentry wrote. “I am always asked, ‘Who named your road such a ridiculous name, Dumbell Road.”

Gentry, of the A Bar C Ranch, went on to write defiantly that the road was laid on “generations of great cattlemen that had nerves of steel, skin of leather, and the patience of Job.”

He also explained that over the generations, Dumbbell-related historical accounts, dates and spellings (including conflicting spellings for the ranch name — “Dumbbell” or “Dumbell”) have varied, depending on the source or author.

Undisputed is that the ranch — with its native rolling rangeland, hay-producing meadows, numerous lakes and artesian wells — has pressed on through changes of size, management, workers, heirs. The area Gentry and Davis bought in late October separates it from a family that had owned it for more than a century. It once was part of a larger Dumbbell that, decades ago, was divided among the children of Gustaf Edward Anderson and wife, Janie.

The result was three ranch sections: Pitchfork, 3 Circles and Dumbbell.

The house Gentry lives in today, on Dumbell Road, is on the old 3 Circles grounds.

“My Dad talked about being young and looking around the borders wondering which direction he could possibly grow,” Gentry wrote. “He never even considered the Dumbell, as it was solid as a rock.”

According to records filed in Cherry County, Gentry paid about $6.4 million for his roughly 4,800 acres, which, he said, brings his family property in the area to about 60,000 acres.&nbsp;

Davis’ roughly 11,000-acre, $10.2 million purchase boosts his family’s property to about 63,000 acres.&nbsp;

The sale transaction also reunifies parts of the original Dumbbell Ranch, which harkens back to the late 1880s and its founder, Dr. A.J. Plumer.

Davis, 71, said his grandfather, A.T. Davis, settled in the area in 1888 — and was a friend and neighbor to Plumer.

As the lore goes, the Dumbbell got its name when Plumer, during construction of the “white mansion” on the grounds, accidentally slammed a hammer on his thumb and exclaimed:&nbsp;Only a dumbbell would do that.

Over the years, Sandhills residents have become somewhat anxious as ranchland has turned over to out-of-state buyers, said Valentine-based Mark Johnson, a Hall and Hall real estate partner who brokered the Dumbbell deal.

Gentry joked that he wasn’t keen on Colorado folk buying into the neighborhood (a&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/briefs/dumbbell-ranch-operation-in-nebraska-sandhills-poised-for-next-chapter/">Colorado family’s bid</a>&nbsp;to buy the Dumbbell fell through last summer).&nbsp;

“People are pleased,” Davis said, “that locals ended up buying the ranch.”

Anne Anderson Johnson, part of the family that had ownership interest in the Dumbbell for more than 100 years, also considers it a happy ending to her family’s era.

When trying to sell the property, Johnson (whose last name changed recently as she remarried) said that she&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2023/04/03/dumbbell-in-nebraska-sandhills-gains-spotlight-with-sheer-size-storied-past/">loved having been part of the ranch</a>&nbsp;but that the younger generation had other interests, and it was “time to move on.”&nbsp;&nbsp;She said then that she hoped to pass on the legacy to a family as opposed to a big entity or corporation.

Johnson said she’s “absolutely thrilled” with the new Davis and Gentry ownership and that parts of the original Dumbbell are joined again.

“It makes a wonderful, amazing story,” she said.

Doors for both shows open at 6:00pm. Tickets go on sale November 17th at 10:00am. NORTH PLATTE - The Mid-Plains United Way campaign is officially underway for the 2023-2024 campaign year. The United Way is raising money to help support their partner agencies. The Nebraska Youth Center is one of many partners agencies that works with Mid-Plains United Way.&nbsp;

The Mid-Plains United Way has many upcoming events as we head into the holiday season. The events include:&nbsp;

The Nebraska Youth Center is to provide a safe environment for youths in crisis who can find acceptance in resolving issues. The center provides opportunities for these youth to positively change their behavioral patterns. The Nebraska Youth Center opened up its facility in North Platte in 2011.&nbsp;

The Hot Sheets: November 12th, 2023

The brave women and men who wore the uniform, and their families, made great sacrifices to serve our country. As President John F. Kennedy once said: “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words but to live by them.” Our veterans deserve not just our gratitude, but also our commitment. As a nation, we commit to give them the quality benefits and care they’ve earned. In Nebraska, we proved that is just the start. When I was Governor, we also committed to reducing the burdens our veterans face to maximize their benefits. It’s time Washington makes that same commitment.

That’s why this week I’ve introduced the Tax Cuts for Veterans Act in the U.S. Senate. My bill would make military retirement pay tax-free at the federal level. It is the fourth piece of legislation in my “Proven Nebraska Solutions Ready for America” package.

In 2021, at my request, Colonel Tom Brewer introduced LB387, which eliminated state income tax on military retirement benefits. LB387 was a big win for our state, for Nebraska’s job creators, and for military families looking to put down roots in Nebraska. It was not a Republican priority or a Democrat priority. It was a Nebraska priority. Not one state senator voted against it. It was a strong, bipartisan endorsement of a common-sense idea.

This policy has worked for veterans across Nebraska. Lawmakers in Washington should come together and do the same for veterans across the country. Doing so would give real relief to veterans and their families in this time of stubbornly high inflation. Consider an enlisted soldier, sailor, guardsman, or airman who serves for 20 years. My bill would result in tax relief of over $6,000 per year. That comes out to an extra $500 more per month. That’s extra money for necessities like groceries and gas, or even savings for the future or a rainy day.

In Nebraska, we proved it’s possible. It’s time to eliminate federal taxes on military retirement for veterans across the country. By passing my Tax Cuts for Veterans Act, we can take a significant step to better the lives of veterans and their families. I will never stop fighting to make sure our veterans get the support they’ve earned.

This Veterans Day, let us rededicate ourselves to showing our gratitude and respect to the 106,000 veterans living in Nebraska. Their courageous service should inspire us to help our community and country however we can. Working together, we can ensure that we fulfill our promises to those who have put their lives at risk to defend us.

Sen. Ricketts: Fighting for Our Veterans

Post News Director Canon Rath sat down with Axes &amp; Aces owners Lisa Citta and Brian Schimek and discussed the newest family fun/group entertainment attraction that is preparing to open in&nbsp;North Platte.

NORTH PLATTE - Axes &amp; Aces, the newest entertainment attraction coming to North Platte offers a family fun/group entertainment setting for everyone to enjoy. The new attraction will have golf simulators, axe throwing and pickle ball courts. The location also features a bar and will have a kitchen. As of now, the kitchen is not operational as parts to finish the kitchen will be coming in the next couple of weeks.

Axes &amp; Aces has hosted a few private events over the last few weeks with the North Platte Pickleball Club getting the chance to play on the brand new pickleball courts. During Halloween, Axes &amp; Aces hosted the Spooktacular Pickleball event which ended up being a 2-day event with how fast the first night filled up.&nbsp;

Axes &amp; Aces will be showing the Husker/Maryland game today at 11:00am and the bar is fully stocked and ready to go. The owners want to remind guests that there will be no food as the kitchen is still being worked on. NORTH PLATTE - &nbsp;The Prairie Arts Center welcomed in North Platte native and Doane Professor Eric Stearn's Ra•ku poetry in the main exhibit and will be on displayed tell the end of the month. Stearn's was in North Platte last Friday for a reception on the opening night of the gallery. Carlini discuses what other gallery's are currently on displayed at the PAC. The 2023 Holiday Passport is quickly approaching and the PAC is one of 20 attractions on this years passport. The PAC also always offers classes.&nbsp;

North Platte Community College automotive instructor Bryan Herrick gives students from North Platte High School’s automotive program a tour of NPCC’s Automotive Technology department Friday morning. In addition to the tour, Herrick provided a training session on alignment, explaining basic angles and showing the students how the alignment machine works, to generate interest in the field. A racecar was used for the demonstration, which made adjustments easy to see and do.

 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀: 

- Hunters must wear 400 square inches of hunter orange on their head, chest and back.

- Treat every firearm as if it is loaded.

- Always point the muzzle of your firearm in a safe direction.

- Be sure of your target, what is in front of it, and what is beyond it.

- Keep your finger outside of the trigger guard until you are ready to fire.

- Never shoot at sound, movement, through thick brush, toward a roadway, at water or ice, or at a sky-lined deer.

- Never use a rifle scope to identify deer; always identify your target with binoculars or a spotting scope.

- Never cross a fence, waterway, steep embankment or other obstacle with a loaded firearm.

- Always wear a full-body harness while hunting from an elevated stand or blind.

- If you see someone who isn't following these safety guidelines, speak up.

Ogallala American Legion Post #135 serving a free dinner to any Veteran w/ID card on Friday

County wide tones for ditch fire spreading into unharvested corn field in the Ogallala district. Resources included Command from Ogallala and KL. Brush trucks and tenders from all four agencies along with LEO for traffic control responded. KCEM Kling and MAC 60 responded with FLIR drone. Private farm equipment requested to create fire line. 

Center pivot utilized to halt forward progress of fire. MA requested from Grant due to minor equipment problems with two Keith county units. Structures threatened but not damaged. No injuries reported to IC. Approximately 50 acres of standing corn destroyed. 

The photo is at the point of origin from a poorly maintained semi trailer, west bound on 80. These duals separated from the trailer, crossed the east bound, miraculously not hitting anyone or anything, and the hot metal ignited the ditch and corn field. Semi continued traveling and has not been identified at this time. All units returned to service by 1700 hrs.&nbsp; &nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - The Annual St. Patrick's Church Christmas Boutique show is going to be held this Saturday, Nov. 11th at the St. Patrick's Church in North Platte. The event runs from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. Starting at 11:00 am, a homemade lunch will be served for $5. Lunch will only be served until 1:00pm. There will be live music and door prizes throughout the day. The event is free to attend.&nbsp;

There will be 30 local vendors selling goodies at the St. Patrick's Christmas Boutique show. As of now, there is still room for 3 more vendors. If interested in becoming a vendor at the show, you can call the church at 308-532-0942.
