Union Pacific plans to invest $3.4 billion in 2024 to support safe operations, renew assets and grow with customers. That’s the equivalent of spending more than $9 million every day to make the railroad safer and generate economic and supply chain activity across its 23-state footprint, boosting local, regional and the national economy.

An estimated 56% of the capital plan, or $1.9 billion will go toward upgrading and replacing infrastructure, such as rail, ties, and ballasts, along with $0.6 billion toward locomotives and equipment.

North Platte Community College’s music department will host its first concert of the spring semester March 7 with a focus on positive psychology.

The event is free and open to the public.&nbsp;It will&nbsp;begin at 7 p.m. in the McDonald-Belton Theater on the NPCC South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd., in North Platte.

The concert will feature performances by NPCC’s jazz band, the Jazzy Knights, and the college’s choir, the Knightly Singers.

NPCC concert will focus on “positive psychology”

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department

For Children’s Dental Health Month, Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) encourages parents to teach good dental habits and get regular dental care for their children. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommend that children visit their dentist no later than their first birthday and every six months after that. When children learn how to care for their teeth early in life, their families save on costs and prevent future problems.

“According to AAPD, tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood illness in the United States, and the most preventable of all health problems,” states Sarah Minnick, Program Manager for SWNPHD. “Tooth decay is 5 times more common than asthma and 20 times more common than diabetes. In Nebraska, 46% of children aged 3 to 5 already have dental decay.”

Polish Your Pearls is a grant-based dental program from SWNPHD that helps supplement regular dental visits to provide protection against cavities for infants and children through 6th grade. This program is available to local daycares, preschools, and schools to provide oral health screening, dental education, sealants, and application of fluoride varnish.

The fluoride varnish that is applied by Polish Your Pearls is a sticky, honey like material that is painted on the teeth with a small soft brush. This varnish can be applied 4 to 6 times per year to strengthen teeth and protect against cavities. Polish Your Pearls also provides children with education on proper brushing and flossing.

· Tilt your toothbrush and put the bristles next to your gum line. The bristles should touch both the tooth and the gumline.

· Use a gentle vibrating movement to brush the outside surfaces 2 to 3 teeth at a time. Be sure to brush both sides of the teeth!

· Tilt the brush up and down behind the front teeth. Make up and down strokes using the bristle side of the brush.

· Brush the tongue from back to front to get rid of odor-producing bacteria.

Having your child participate in the Polish Your Pearls dental program can save money and help prevent problems. All children who participate in the program will receive a free dental screening, toothbrush, and toothpaste. A note is also sent home with your child showing the screening results. Since 2011, Paws-itive Partners Humane Society and veterinary clinics in North Platte and Sutherland have sponsored Love My Cat months. Two months each year, the goal of Love My Cat is to make spaying and neutering cats easily affordable for low-income cat owners in this area. “For only $35, low-income cat caregivers can provide lifelong care for their cat. Cats that are sterilized are less likely to get certain cancers, they do not contribute to the homelessness and overpopulation of cats, they tend to be more social and healthier" said Jo Mayber, Paws-itive Partners president.

Beginning now, cat owners can call 308-530-1516 to register for Love My Cat. Low-income cat owners must call this number before scheduling an appointment with their Love My Cat veterinarian in Sutherland or North Platte. Participants are encouraged to call as soon as possible so they don’t miss deadlines or delays. “Paws-itive Partners helps people of low-income status spay/neuter house pets, barn cats and stray cats they are caring for. We can help with up to three cats per household for $35 per cat.” Mayber said.&nbsp;

In addition to Love My Cat months, Paws-itive Partners helps spay/neuter dogs and cats year-round. They recently implemented Urgent Short-Term Pet Care for pets whose owners have been displaced due to hospitalization or homelessness.

O’Gorman heard arguments in the case of S-21-0364,&nbsp;Nieveen v. Tax 106.&nbsp; In that case, Appellant argued that Nebraska’s tax certificate statutes were unconstitutional, and on appeal, the Nebraska Supreme Court determined that the statutes to be constitutional.&nbsp;&nbsp;See Nieveen v. TAX 106,&nbsp;311 Neb. 574, 974 N.W.2d 15 (2022).&nbsp; On further appeal to the Supreme Court of the United States, the Supreme Court of the United States vacated the Nebraska Supreme Court’s decision with directions that it reconsider the case in light of&nbsp;Tyler v. Hennepin County,&nbsp;598 U.S. 631 (2023).&nbsp;

The event provides a “one-stop shop” for parents looking for summer activities for their children. It saves families time and effort by bringing local youth organizations under one roof to provide details and answer questions about their upcoming events.&nbsp;

Booths will be set up from 3:30-6 p.m. in the Ogallala Auditorium, 514 E. B St. The event is free to attend and for participating organizations.

A few spots still remain for the series of crafting classes that will be offered at the Mid-Plains Community College Broken Bow Campus this weekend.

Sunflower or Geometric Outdoor Barn Quilt

Activities will begin from 1-4 p.m. Friday with a free Sunflower or Geometric Outdoor Barn Quilt workshop. Participants will choose from the two options.

The design for the sunflower barn quilt will be drawn out ahead of time and ready for color marking and tape. Those who prefer the geometric option can select from 48 designs ranging from simple to complex.

Instructor Rose Mapel will explain how to dissect a pattern and transfer it to the barn quilt blank. Participants will need to take a hair dryer, a heavy-duty extension cord and yellow Delicate Surface FrogTape®, preferably 1.41-inch width, to the class.

The fun will continue from 4-9 p.m. Friday with a Crafter’s Retreat at the campus. The retreat will provide an opportunity for inspiration, socialization and time to enjoy an interruption-free weekend of working on personal sewing, scrapbooking or other artistic projects.

Projects can be locked up at the end of class and finished Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. The fee is $10.

Also on Saturday, the campus will host a Creating Photo Memory Letters workshop from 9 a.m. to noon.

Participants will create a unique display using wooden letters and their favorite pictures. Attendees will be required to take their own photos and are asked to let the campus know ahead of time what letters they would like to use. The cost is $40.

The Hot Sheets: February 20th, 2024

Annually, visitors in Lincoln County, Nebraska spend more than $125 million, generate over $10 million in state and local taxes, and support more than 1,500 jobs with a payroll of just under $25 million. Our local tourism partners – hotels, restaurants, retail, attractions, and events continued to greet visitors with warmth, hospitality, and professionalism throughout all of 2023.

During the Excellence in Tourism Luncheon scheduled for May 8, 2024, Visit North Platte will be presenting five ‘Excellence in Customer Service’ awards. The categories for these awards are: Excellent Service within a Hotel, Excellent Service within a Restaurant, Excellent Service within a Retail Establishment, Excellent Service at an Event, and Excellent Service within an Attraction. In addition to the five Excellence in Tourism awards, Volunteer of the Year and Hero of Tourism awards will be presented.

Annually, nearly 600,000 visitors will make the trip to North Platte. What attracts these visitors, keeps them coming back, and inspires them to tell their friends to visit North Platte? North Platte’s events and attractions are part of the equation, but the single most important factor in making visitors feel welcome and have a positive experience is excellent customer service.

The nominees for the Excellence in Customer Service Awards will be employees (or volunteers) in any of the above categories within Lincoln County who go above and beyond expectations. Anyone who has experienced an employee exhibiting exceptional customer service skills is encouraged to submit an award nomination. Nominees for Volunteer of the Year and Hero of Tourism will be individuals who have made a significant contribution to the tourism industry in Lincoln County.

Nominations can be from locals experiencing excellent customer service at their favorite local spot or someone traveling through getting a taste of North Platte’s Canteen Spirit! 7th Annual Get Egged FUR Paws - FUR Animal Rescue Fundraiser!

LINCOLN, NEB. – U.S. Rep. Adrian Smith has been endorsed by the Nebraska Farm Bureau Political Action Committee (NEFB-PAC). Smith, who is seeking re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives in Nebraska’s 3rd&nbsp;District, received the endorsement due to his leadership in addressing various policy matters that hold significant importance for farmers and ranchers in Nebraska, according to Nebraska Farm Bureau (NEFB) President Mark McHargue.

“Rep. Smith has given Nebraska’s farm and ranch families an influential voice in tax, trade, and health care issues, all important to our members, as a significant leader on the House Ways and Means Committee, especially now as Chairman of the Trade subcommittee. In that capacity, Smith played an instrumental role in pushing the Biden administration into action to help ensure Nebraska corn farmers were not harmed by an illegal ban on the importation of genetically modified corn into Mexico. Smith also helped develop and deliver the first major revisions to the federal tax code in more than 30 years, including a reduction in individual income tax rates, doubled estate tax exemption as well as expanded bonus depreciation and business expensing. As a part of that effort, he also helped ensure Nebraska farmers and ranchers would be able to continue to fully deduct their property taxes on their federal tax return. Rep. Smith Endorsed by Nebraska Farm Bureau in Bid for Re-Election

KEARNEY – Three high school seniors will attend the University of Nebraska at Kearney as Omaha World-Herald/Kearney Hub Scholars.

Will Krondak of North Platte, Carter Hohlen of Lincoln and Zoey Smallwood of Fremont are this year’s recipients of the prestigious scholarship, awarded to the top students admitted to the UNK Honors Program.

Offered by the Honors Program and supported by the Omaha World-Herald and Kearney Hub newspapers, this scholarship is one of the premier academic awards at UNK. It covers room and board, tuition and fees and books for up to four years, with a total value of more than $82,000. Students must have a GPA of at least 3.85 and an ACT score of 30 or better to qualify.

A total of 165 students applied for the scholarship, now in its 40th year.

“It is always inspiring to witness the depth of talent and diversity of backgrounds among those students who seek to be part of the UNK Honors Program,” said associate professor Angela Hollman, the program’s director. “This year’s scholars have the character of leadership and academic excellence that defines this scholarship and our program. We welcome them alongside the entire fall 2024 cohort.”

The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/academics/honors/index.php">UNK Honors Program</a>&nbsp;challenges students to go above and beyond by putting them in an environment where their learning and development are not limited. Students develop individualized pathways to success through research and creative activity, community service, leadership opportunities and other experiences while building strong ties as part of a close-knit community.

Krondak attends St. Patrick’s High School, where he’s been involved in band, jazz band, choir, swing choir, speech, cross country, track and field, discipleship groups, National Honor Society and a youth mentoring program. He also served as a counselor at a Catholic leadership camp.

Krondak was selected for Cornhusker Boys’ State in 2023, and he’s participated in the Best of the West Music Festival in North Platte and HOBY Youth Leadership seminar. An NCPA Academic All-State honoree, he received a local NSAA Believers &amp; Achievers award in 2023, along with a Bausch + Lomb Honorary Science Award and his school’s Multi-Activity Student Award. He was also a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist.

Hohlen attends Lincoln Christian High School, where he’s active in cross country, track and field, Math Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and National Honor Society. He’s also part of the Country Bible Church youth group, and he serves as a discipleship group leader at school.

Hohlen volunteers at Country Bible Church and through an international mission project in Mexico. He also volunteered at a summer vacation Bible school for Afghan refugees and served as a volunteer youth track and basketball coach and student manager for the Lincoln Christian football team.

Hohlen is a nine-time state medal winner in track and cross country and three-time Academic All-Conference, Lincoln Christian Academic Letter, NSAA Academic All-State and NCPA Academic All-State honoree. He received the NSAA Believers &amp; Achievers award in 2023, along with Elks No. 80 Leadership Recognition and the National Spanish Exam Honorable Mention medal.

He’ll compete for the UNK track and cross country teams.

Smallwood attends Fremont High School, where she’s participated in orchestra, marching, symphonic and jazz band, choir, volleyball, tennis, Multicultural Club, Key Club, Thespian Society and National Honor Society. She’s the current choir president, orchestra concertmaster and marching and symphonic band brass captain and section leader.

Smallwood also serves as student manager for the boys tennis team, and she’s a member of the Sing Omaha Girls Choir. She’s volunteered with the Salvation Army, First Lutheran Church, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Fremont High School and Thriftology/LifeHouse.

A Fremont Youth Leadership Academy participant and scholarship recipient, Smallwood has received her school’s Academic Achievement Award numerous times, along with the Patrick S. Gilmore Award honoring outstanding band students. She’s a member of the National Society of High School Scholars.

The Hot Sheets: February 17th, 2024

&nbsp; Lincoln, Nebraska, Feb. 16, 2024 —Eighteen Nebraska LEAD 41 Fellows recently returned from a visit to Albania, Greece, and Italy. The international seminar is a critical part of the two-year leadership development program. In addition to developing a deeper understanding of global agricultural challenges and opportunities, delegates also are able to meet with farmers, processors and agricultural leaders from around the world.

"Our international study/travel seminar is designed to provide firsthand appreciation and understanding of our international community and the potential for people of all nations to work together," said Terry Hejny, Nebraska LEAD Program Director and group leader.

The trip, which took place Jan. 14-19, included visits to various working farms, including a dairy, a sheep farm and an olive tree farm with more than 200,000 trees. LEAD delegates also visited a chocolate processing facility, an olive oil mill and a several meat processing plants. Delegates also had the opportunity to meet with global leaders in agriculture and trade at the&nbsp;U.S. Embassy in Rome, including Lola Herrera, regional director of the U.S. Soybean Expert Council.

"The people-to-people encounters provided the members of Nebraska LEAD Group 41 an opportunity to view characteristics, conditions and trends in Albania, Greece, and Italy allowing them to determine relationships to issues and situations in our country," Hejny said. "Through this experience, LEAD Fellows develop techniques in identifying comparisons and contrasts of the countries they studied in areas such as agriculture, politics, economics, energy, religion, culture and history as well as technology, trade, food, art and philosophy."
