The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will release adult rooster pheasants on 18 wildlife management areas prior to the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

The WMAs are: Arnold Trupp WMA (Morrill County), Arrowhead WMA (Gage County), Bordeaux WMA (Dawes County), Branched Oak WMA (Lancaster County), Cornhusker (Hall County), George D. Syas WMA (Nance County), Hickory Ridge WMA (Johnson County), James N. &nbsp; The North Platte Police Department will be working with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Safety Administration to make sure citizens stay safe on the roads during the Thanksgiving Holiday Season. Of the 361 traffic fatalities in 2021, half were unrestrained. 

 Additional officers will be on the streets enforcing our traffic laws with an emphasis on unrestrained vehicle occupants.  Whether you’re driving out of town or just across town to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday, remember that more vehicles will be on the roads than usual. The Connection has applied for funding through the Nebraska Investment Finance Authority’s Low Income Housing Tax Credit CRANE project to build an affordable, quality, supportive housing development. This development is planned to be approximately forty (40) units made up of one- and two-bedroom one-bath apartments, and three-bedroom two-bath apartments, all renting at or below fair market rate and will offer services and amenities designed to improve the quality of life of tenants and help them improve their overall self-sufficiency and sustainability.&nbsp;&nbsp;

We are working with an incredible developer and an architect who have completed many of these projects and who work hard to ensure that their affordable properties invoke a sense of pride not only in their tenants but the communities in which they are placed.&nbsp;&nbsp;

We plan to provide case management services, a community garden, playground, laundry facilities, a community building, and really there is so much potential for truly beneficial services in a project like this that I cannot wait to get started on building and growing the amazing partnerships that will make those services possible.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The development will serve low- and moderate-income households along with those that are needing other accommodations.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Our current timeline includes groundbreaking in the fall of 2024, and we look forward to providing an additional service in our community that will certainly benefit us all.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bartels will also have copies of his award-winning 2018 children's book, What’s Going Down in Prairie Dog Town? with forward by Jane Goodall. Alan J. Bartels’s life took a fortunate turn when his family moved to the edge of the Sandhills in the mid-1980s. While traveling the world with the US Army following high school, all he could think of was home. 

He’s the former editor of Nebraska Life magazine and the author of What’s Going Down in Prairie Dog Town? When not exploring the Sandhills, Alan works a day job devoted to natural resources conservation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

OGALLALA - Keith County is gearing up for the Annual Keith County Holiday Craft Fair which is taking place tomorrow at the fairgrounds in Ogallala from 9:00am -12:00 pm (mountain time zone). Around 30 vendors will be participating at this years craft fair. During the craft fair, you can expect many one of a type gifts.

For shoppers who are still wanting to explore craft fairs after finishing the Keith County Holiday Craft Fair, just 20 miles down the road, Paxton will be hosting their craft fair as well. Final Day of the Holiday Auction

Lincoln, NE– November 16, 2023–Pauline Linder of Cozad won $310,000 playing Nebraska Pick 5 from the Nebraska Lottery.

Linder purchased her ticket at Pump &amp; Pantry #32 at 604 E Hwy 30 in Cozad. The ticket contained five plays for the November 11 drawing, one of which matched that night’s winning numbers 07, 18, 35, 36 and 38.

When she checked her numbers on the Nebraska Lottery’s website, Linder said she was in shock.

“I took the ticket to my husband and said, “Look at this,’” she said.

“She just couldn’t believe it,” her husband Marvin Linder said.

Linder said she’s planning on paying off a few bills and putting the rest away in the bank.

On Monday November 13th at approximately 9:10 A.M.  Dundy County Communications received a report of a 2 vehicle Semi vs Pickup injury accident on U.S Highway 34 just west of Haigler. The Dundy County Sheriff's Office investigated the accident, and the preliminary investigation shows that the pickup was slowing to turn off the Highway when it was struck from behind by the semi. 2 adult males were transported to the Dundy County Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

North Platte, NE The Pecos League is proud to announce its newest team in North Platte, Nebraska. The team will be named the North Platte 80s. The Pecos League now has teams in eight states across the Western United States. The team will begin play at Bill Wood Field. North Platte will join the 16 team Pecos League and take the place of the the Lancaster Sound Breakers from California. The Sound Breakers set the all time Pecos League Attendance Mark, but their stadium was sold to a soccer club. A new era of baseball in North Platte, Nebraska will begin in the Summer of 2024 as the North Platte 80's was unveiled as the new name of the newest Pecos League Team. The 80's represents a baseball team in many ways. First ties the city lying on Interstate 80. The excitement and passion is Baseball's Forgotten Era: The '80s in which National League Baseball was played with no Designated Hitter as the rules are in the Pecos League. Promotional nights will include 1980's nights with 1980's music, food and uniforms. The North Platte Team will play in the Mountain Division in the 2024 season along with the Tucson Saguaros, Roswell Invaders, Alpine Cowboys, Garden City Wind, Blackwell Flycatchers, Trinidad Triggers and Santa Fe Fuego. North Platte to get new baseball team, Nebraska 80's will play in the Pecos League

The Mid-Plains Community College Rodeo Team is raffling a Traeger Pro 780 Pellet Grill donated by Mike’s Motorcycle and ATV Repair in North Platte. Proceeds from the fundraiser will be used to help offset travel costs and other rodeo team expenses.

MPCC Rodeo Team raffling Traeger grill

The Mid-Plains Community College Board of Governors met for its regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 p.m. (CST) Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2023, in Room 200 of the W.W. Wood Building on the North Platte Community College North Campus, 1101 Halligan Drive, North Platte, Neb.

Board Chair Ben Lashley started the meeting with a roll call. In addition to Lashley, those present were MPCC President Ryan Purdy and Board members: Jo Etta Brown, Kirk Crawley, Ernie Mehl, Kent Miller, Kim Korgan, Tyler Pribbeno and Tricia Schaffer. Board members Matthew Broz, Cynthia Duncan and Ted Klug Jr. were absent.

Robert Smith, of Culbertson, receives the keys to the 2023 North Platte Community College raffle car from automotive instructor Bryan Herrick Wednesday morning. Smith won the drawing for the 1972 Pontiac Le Mans Sport in September but was not present for the announcement.

The Le Mans is the 18th raffle vehicle produced by the college’s Transportation Division. It was restored by students in the Automotive Technology and Auto Body Technology programs.

A total of 5,959 tickets were sold this year. Proceeds will go toward scholarships for students in the college’s transportation programs and to help offset the cost of producing the next raffle car project.

Day 2 of the Holiday Auction 

North Platte Community College’s music department will host its annual holiday concert Dec. 6. This year’s theme is “Holiday Knights.”

The event is free and open to the public. It will feature performances by NPCC’s jazz band, the Jazzy Knights, and the college’s choir, the Knightly Singers.

“This will be a solid holiday concert, sharing music we are familiar with at this time of year,” said&nbsp;Kristin Simpson, NPCC music instructor.

The following musicians will be showcased:

The concert will&nbsp;begin at 7 p.m. in the McDonald-Belton Theater on the NPCC South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd., in North Platte.

NPCC’s chapter of the&nbsp;National Association for Music Education will have a jackpot drawing that night. Tickets can be purchased at the door at a cost of $1 each or six for $5. Individuals don’t have to be present to win.

The concert will be followed by a reception and refreshments in the fireplace area outside the theater.

NORTH PLATTE - The Salvation Army is gearing up for the holiday season and the Red Kettle Campaign started this past Monday. The Salvation Army is also preparing food box donations for Thanksgiving and Christmas, a toy drive and so much more.&nbsp;

The Red Kettle campaign is the Salvations Army biggest fundraiser event. The iconic red kettles are seen all around the United States. The Red Kettles started in North Platte this past Monday. Volunteers stand out ringing the bells in front of the kettles. North Platte will be ringing at 8 locations this holiday season. OGALLALA – 8-year-old Pryce Gette was in a severe car accident on Oct. 16th and spent time at the Children’s Hospital in Denver. Gette got the chance to return to school earlier this week. Support for the Gette family has poured in from all around the Keith County communities and surrounding counties.&nbsp;

This Friday at Crandall Creek Golf Club, the Pryce Gette Silent Auction &amp; Benefit Dinner will take place with doors for the event opening at 5:00 pm MT with the Cocktail Hour with dinner set to serve at 6:00 pm MT. The golf course is located at 359 E County Rd 85 in Ogallala. &nbsp;

The fundraiser event will feature a benefit dinner of Sloppy Joes, silent auction and a raffle basket. The city of North Platte sanitation department will be closed Thursday and Friday, November 23 and 24, 2023 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.&nbsp;

Extra crews will be working to complete all routes by end of the workday on Wednesday. Please have your carts in place for collection by 6:30 a.m. on Monday, November 20 to avoid being missed.&nbsp;

All garbage needs to be in the city issued containers and the lids must be closed. No bags or trash on the ground.&nbsp;

• The transfer station will be closed on Thursday, November 23 and Friday, November 24. It will reopen on Saturday with regular hours of 7 a.m. to 4&nbsp;p.m.&nbsp;

The Wreaths Across America event will be held December 16th at Fort McPherson National Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. The goal of the event is to place a live, balsam fir wreath at the headstone of every Veteran buried at Fort McPherson National Cemetery. Wreaths are needed for thousands of veterans’ headstones. The cost of each wreath is $17.

Union Pacific Railroad recognized a dozen customers and suppliers with the railroad’s first ever 2023 Sustainability Partner Award. The award honors Union Pacific business partners who have demonstrated both leadership and progress toward achieving sustainability goals.

“These companies share Union Pacific’s drive and commitment to finding sustainable ways of doing business that positively impacts our communities, employees and customers, while building a more sustainable tomorrow,” said Union Pacific President Beth Whited.

Union Pacific Honors 12 Companies with First Ever Sustainability Partner Award

Registration is now open for winterim classes at Mid-Plains Community College.

Winterim is the period between the end of the fall term and start of the spring semester. Most classes begin Dec. 11 and end Jan. 11.

The month-long courses offer a unique opportunity to earn credits in a short amount of time and allow students to complete general education requirements over the holiday break.

The following classes are offered this year: Introduction to the Visual Arts, Personal and Professional Development, Introduction to Business, Literature of Nature, College Algebra, Music Appreciation, Walking and Jogging, Drugs and Sports, American Government, Intro to Sociology and Diversity Consciousness.

 </figure>Registration is now open for winterim classes at Mid-Plains Community College.Winterim is the period between the end of the fall term and start of the spring semester. Most classes begin Dec. 11 and end Jan. 11.The month-long courses offer a unique opportunity to earn credits in a short amount of time and allow students to complete general education requirements over the holiday break.The following classes are offered this year: Introduction to the Visual Arts, Personal and Professional Development, Introduction to Business, Literature of Nature, College Algebra, Music Appreciation, Walking and Jogging, Drugs and Sports, American Government, Intro to Sociology and Diversity Consciousness.An admissions application can be found under the “apply now” tab on the college’s website:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.mpcc.edu/" target="_blank">www.mpcc.edu</a>.
