Quality Brand of North Platte donates drinks to fire fighters

NORTH PLATTE - Fire crews are still battling the grass fire that began yesterday around 10:30am on Betty Way, just northeast of North Platte. With the region being in a red flag warning and windy conditions up to 40 mph, the fire quickly spread out east forcing evacuations along the way.

According to officials with Region 51 Management,&nbsp;The Betty's Way Fire is still ongoing. Crews are on the ground. For your safety, and the safety of the crews fighting this, we ask that you continue to avoid the area.

Multiple agencies from around the state have responded to help battle the blaze. The POST has confirmed that one home north of Maxwell was lost in the fire.&nbsp;

Lincoln County and Custer County officials declared emergencies and requested state assistance last night due to the grass fire. According to a release from Nebraska Emergency Management Agency,&nbsp;Two National Guard UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters will be deployed to the fire and will begin dropping water on the fire today.&nbsp;

Multiple fires broke out in the region yesterday as one between Grant and Imperial was put out around noon. Later in the day, another grass fire broke out near Stapleton and forced evacuations as the fire spread.&nbsp;

Local officials in Custer and Lincoln counties have declared emergencies and requested state assistance on Monday night due to a large wildfire affecting the area, closing several roads, requiring multiple evacuations and requiring the response of multiple volunteer fire departments from around the region.

The North Platte/Lincoln County Emergency Operations Center was activated immediately and has been monitoring the situation and coordinating resources since the fire started. The fire, which originated north of North Platte, from an unknown cause, is burning on private lands in Lincoln and Custer counties. Governor Jim Pillen approved a state disaster which allows funds from the Governor’s Emergency Fund to be used to assist in the response. 

At the request of county officials, Nebraska’s Incident Management Team, as well as members of the state’s Wildland Incident Response Assistant Team, have been deployed and will assist local responders in the coming days. Two National Guard UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters will be deployed to the fire and begin.

Operations to drop water on the fire beginning today. Additional aircraft will be used to map the fire to assist teams as they plan the best strategy to fight the fire.

Roads are now being closed in the area due to the fire and crews can battle the blaze. According to officials, N Maxwell Rd, N Brady Rd, and Hwy 47 are closed from Hwy 30 North. Please avoid the area at this time.

Mutual aid was requested by the North Platte Fire Department and surrounding communities have responded to the call. NPPD says the Salvation Army in North Platte is open to those impacted by the fire.&nbsp;

NPPD has requested that residents north of Brady to turn on their center pivots to help battle the grass fire as it heads east.

According to the National Weather Service, Lincoln County and much of Nebraska is in a red flag warning and will remain in effect until 6:00pm CT tonight. Winds can reach up to 15-25 mph with gust up to 45 mph.

The fire, which is northeast of North Platte, is almost in the same area as the Valentine's Day grass fire crews responded too earlier this month.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Multiple Fires in Lincoln and surrounding counties Monday

North Platte Community College’s 55th annual Inter-High Day lured in 470 students from 21 area high schools Thursday.

They competed for scholarships and other prizes while taking tests in everything from art, accounting and criminal justice to auto body, welding and diesel technology. The scholastic contest was spread across both of NPCC’s campuses.

Schools earned points based on how well their students placed in the academic divisions. The top three point earning schools received a plaque and a $500 scholarship to award to a student of their choice.

Individual first place winners received a gold star pin, a $500 scholarship and three credit hours of summer tuition to the college. Second and third place recipients earned silver and bronze star pins, respectively, as well as three credit hours of summer tuition.

The top three winners in each of the applied technology competitions also received industry-based prizes related to their particular test areas.

Area students win big at NPCC Inter-High Day   

North Platte, Ne - The North Platte High School Powerlifting team wrapped up their team season in Verdigre, NE on Saturday.&nbsp; The Bulldogs teams walked away big winners, as the girls&nbsp;took home the overall team trophy, the boys finished second overall, and the coed team also left the competition as champions.&nbsp;

All 9 girls medaled at the event, with Abby Dimmitt, Ani Zakrzewski-Aten, and Grace Wilke earning first place medals, with Myah Porter, Carly Berliner, Karly Knapp, Kourtnie Bokoskie, Allie Einspahr, and Abby Hankla also earning hardware.&nbsp; Zakrzewski-Aten also picked up an Outstanding Female Lifter award. For the boys, Andrew Cummings, Drake Ferris, and Seth Penn were individual weight division champions, with Alex Cummings, Parker Clang, Jamison Rhoades, Mason Stine, Brock Matuszczak, and Cole Tomlinson also medaling in their divisions.&nbsp;

On the day, 57 personal records were set by the team, along with at least 4 school records. Coach Arttie Parker said it was a great way to close out the team season, as the Bulldogs competed against more than a dozen teams, including Lincoln Northeast, Grand Island, Lexington, Grand Island Central Catholic, and host Niobrara-Verdigre.&nbsp; 

More than 200 lifters were on hand for the event.&nbsp; "It means a lot to these kids, and to this program, to finish on such a high note.&nbsp; We're graduating several great kids, and to be able to send each of them out as a medalist at their final meet was huge.&nbsp; I couldn't be more proud of the way all of our kids competed today." While the team season is over, several lifters will continue to compete in individual events.&nbsp; Parker said that both Penn and Dimmitt will compete at an upcoming meet in Lincoln, NE, and Dimmitt has her eyes set on the National Meet in Baton Rouge, LA later this Spring. "She already has the poundage numbers to qualify, she just has to do it at a USAPL sanctioned event, which is what&nbsp;Lincoln is," Parker said.&nbsp; Other lifters have expressed plans to compete at the Cornhusker State Games this Summer.

North Platte Powerlifting team takes home 1st & runnerup at last meet of the season

LINCOLN —&nbsp;Lawmakers approved a special committee Friday designed to fully review the Nebraska Legislature’s oversight as it continues to clash with the executive branch.

State Sen. John Arch of La Vista, speaker of the Legislature, introduced&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://nebraskalegislature.gov/bills/view_bill.php?DocumentID=55911">Legislative Resolution 298</a>&nbsp;to appoint a Legislative Oversight Review Special Committee. While originally proposed as a nine-member committee, an amendment adopted&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://nebraskalegislature.gov/bills/view_votes.php?KeyID=10126">37-1</a>&nbsp;bumped membership to 15 members who will review oversight through the end of the year.

Arch said outside counsel recommended forming the group so lawmakers can review their oversight authority, describing it as an opportunity to step back, reassess and be more effective.

“Rather than operating a structure that has been built over the years in reaction to events, the Legislature can now enter a deliberative process to structure a proactive system,” Arch said.

He predicted that lawmakers could fix issues in 2024, but they’d return to fix others soon after.

The special committee will issue a report, with recommendations, no later than Dec. 15, including insight into the:

Last August, Attorney General Mike Hilgers&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2023/08/16/attorney-generals-opinion-casts-doubt-on-powers-of-legislatures-inspectors-general/">issued an opinion</a>&nbsp;stating that the Legislature’s two inspectors general were unconstitutional.. The inspectors general were created to probe problems within the state prison system and cases of abuse and neglect involving state wards and to report their findings to state lawmakers

Though Hilgers’&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://ago.nebraska.gov/sites/ago.nebraska.gov/files/docs/opinions/Opinion%20No.%2023-008.pdf">opinion</a>&nbsp;does not carry the weight of law, the state’s executive branch clamped down and closed access to the oversight offices.

Then a week ago, Arch and State Sen. Ray Aguilar of Grand Island, chair of the Executive Board, signed a memorandum of understanding with Gov. Jim Pillen to&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2024/02/14/nebraska-child-welfare-prison-watchdogs-have-temporarily-restored-access-for-oversight-roles/">restore access</a>, which State Sen. Mike Jacobson of North Platte, an Exec Board member, applauded Friday.

Jacobson said the Legislature’s top leaders navigated the issue methodically, “without blowing things up.”

“This is not a permanent fix, but this is a path forward,” Jacobson said. “I think it’s the right path forward.”

State Sens. Machaela Cavanaugh and John Fredrickson, both of Omaha, said the executive branch is breaking the law, which, if allowed to continue, dilutes or strips the Legislature of its power.

“They thumb their noses at us. They violate the law at every turn,” Cavanaugh said. “We need to stand together and we need to stand strong for the people of Nebraska.”

Legislative Oversight Review Special Committee

The 15-member special committee consists of the following state senators:&nbsp;&nbsp;

Fredrickson added that just by engaging in the process, the Legislature is conceding “a great deal of power.”

State Sen. Justin Wayne of Omaha, chair of the Judiciary Committee, said the “delicate game” when it comes to separation of powers has already been decided, at least for the Nebraska Department of Corrections, because the Nebraska Constitution explicitly protects the Legislature’s management power, and, by extension, its oversight.

“The Constitution is on our side,” Wayne said.&nbsp;

State Sen. Terrell McKinney of Omaha similarly said it seems as if the Legislature is “slowly and slowly and slowly” giving up its authority when it comes to corrections.

State Sen. Danielle Conrad of Lincoln, who&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2023/11/20/inspector-general-controversy-aired-at-nebraska-college-of-law-discussion/">clashed</a>&nbsp;with Hilgers at a forum following his August opinion, accused the executive and judicial branches of deciding “to work with and in concert” to shut down oversight rather than have to explain an IG report that may find mismanagement.

“That’s what all this is about at the end of the day,” Conrad said.&nbsp;

“Think about the time, energy, effort, resources and political capital … across all branches of government (that) caused confusion and chaos and disruption because the executive couldn’t be bothered to suffer through one day of bad press about mismanagement a year,” Conrad added.

Arch, in a fiery speech on the floor, said the Legislature’s balance and separation of power is “out of whack” and must be reestablished, but he pushed back on an accusation that lawmakers are “rolling over to the administration.”

The memorandum of understanding, he said, is an effort from the Executive Board to avoid litigation and negotiate a better path forward while more quickly restoring oversight access.

Next year, he said, the Legislature will address the oversight committee’s report.

“At the end, we will find that spot where we fulfill our duties constitutionally — with full authority that we have as developed in the Constitution —&nbsp;so that we can do our work,” Arch said.

LR 298 was adopted&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://nebraskalegislature.gov/bills/view_votes.php?KeyID=10127">38-1</a>.&nbsp;

Ogallala, Ne - The Girls State Basketball Tournament begins Wednesday in Lincoln, the Paxton Lady Tigers defeated Leyton 77-59 in their district final led by Jacelyn Jorgensen's&nbsp;double-double on 19 points and 15 rebounds to qualify for the D2 State Tournament. The team also got some help courtesy of Ella Fote, who scored 22 points along with five rebounds and two steals.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The victory was the fourth in a row for Paxton, bringing their record for this year to 17-9. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 58.3 points per game.

Paxton will be the #8 seed in the D2 Tournament playing #1 Overton at 9am Wednesday, at Pinnacle Bank Arena. 

Broken Bow also qualified in the C1 State Tournament and will play Thurdsay afternoon at 3:15pm at the Devaney Center.&nbsp;The C1 Tournament is loaded with western Nebraska schools, Bridgeport is the #4 seed, while Sidney is the #2 seed in Class C1

&nbsp;North Platte,
Nebraska - Starting now and running through mid-April, approximately one
million Sandhill Cranes will spend about six weeks in the Platte River Valley
on their way north to Canada and Siberia. 400,000 of these Sandhill Cranes will
spend that time in the North Platte and Lincoln County area. While these
incredible creatures visit, they feed in the cornfields and wet meadows by day
in preparation for their long journey ahead, and roost in the shallow flowing
waters of the Platte River at night.

This migration event draws people from all over the globe,
and it can be experienced right here in North Platte. Dusty Trails offers
Sandhill Crane Tours daily from March 12th through April 1st. There are morning
and evening blind tours available that offer breathtaking views of the Sandhill
Cranes ascending from and descending to the wide and shallow riverbeds of the
North Platte River. There are also bus tours during the day which take you out
into the cornfields to watch the birds perform their unique dances and mating
rituals. 

This tour is set at their most active courting time and
allows plenty of time for photography. The tours are also very reasonably
priced, at $45 per person, making this a great affordable activity for the
whole family! There are also self-guided options for viewing the Sandhill
Cranes including three viewing blinds in the area that are open to the public,
as well as a recommended driving route to see the Sandhill Cranes in the corn
fields during the day.

According to an Economic Impact study done for Central
Nebraska in 2017, approximately 46,500 crane visitors came to Central Nebraska
during the migration that year. The average visitor’s length of stay was 2.7
days with an average spending per visitor, per day totaling up to $93.37.
Together, the overall economic impact of the Sandhill Crane Migration on
Central Nebraska was $14.30 million in 2017, supporting 182 year-round
equivalent jobs. Moreover, given economic activity is taxed by local government,
it is estimated that this economic impact generates $379,000 per year in local
property, sales, and lodging tax revenue.

Post News Director Canon Rath chatted with Angela Hipp and Ted Pucylowski and their upcoming event with Community Connections next Tuesday at Venue 304 in North Platte. The event co-hosted with TeamMates Mentoring Program is free and open to the community. Community Connections mentoring program offers year-round mentoring while TeamMates Program is academic school year. Mentors spend 4-8 hours a week with their mentees while doing activities. The TeamMates Mentoring Program is a school-based program that allows mentors to meet with students once a week in school during the school year. The goal is to be there for the students and help guide them towards goals while providing support. NORTH PLATTE - The North Platte city council held a special meeting on February 21st, and different agendas were discussed amongst the council. Topics discussed were repair work on the Willow Street via duct, annexations of property behind Starbucks and Sonic, Arpa funds for road paving and so much more.&nbsp;

Lincoln, NE – February 22, 2024 – Two big jackpots are up for grabs in the next Mega Millions® and Powerball® drawings. Because of these high jackpots, the Nebraska Lottery reminds customers to play responsibly.

A string of drawings without a jackpot winner has grown the estimated Mega Millions jackpot to its highest level since December 2023. There have been 21 consecutive drawings since December 12 without a jackpot winner. This run has grown the estimated jackpot for the Friday, February 23 drawing to $525 million or $247.1 million with the cash option selected.

Powerball has also seen its jackpot grow over the last few months. There have been 22 drawings since January 3 without a jackpot winner. The estimated jackpot for the Saturday, February 24 drawing is $376 million or $177.5 million with the cash option selected.

The dual jackpot runs have produced some large Nebraska winners.

The largest Mega Millions jackpot on record occurred in August 2023 when one winner in Florida won a $1.602 billion jackpot. The largest Powerball jackpot on record occurred in November 2022 when one winner in California won a $2.040 billion jackpot.

Because of the high jackpots, the Nebraska Lottery encourages customers to play within their means. “It’s important for Nebraska Lottery players to remember that no matter how large the jackpot is, the odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are 1 in 302 million, and the odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million,” said Lottery Director Brian Rockey. “Your odds of winning remain the same, regardless of how many tickets are purchased or how many people play.” If you or someone you know has a problem with compulsive gambling, free help is available at&nbsp;<a>problemgambling.nebraska.gov</a>.

The Mid-Plains Community College Board of Governors met for its regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 p.m. (CST) Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2024, in Room 200 of the W.W. Wood Building on the North Platte Community College North Campus, 1101 Halligan Drive, North Platte, Neb.

Board Chair Cynthia Duncan started the meeting with a roll call. In addition to Duncan, those present were MPCC President Ryan Purdy and Board members: Jo Etta Brown, Matthew Broz, Kirk Crawley, Ted Klug Jr., Kim Korgan, Ben Lashley, Ernie Mehl, Kent Miller and Tricia Schaffer. MPCC Board member Tyler Pribbeno was absent and excused.

MCC student trustee Graci Nelson and NPCC student trustee Reece Halley were also present.

2. OPEN FORUM (Comments from students, faculty, staff, public and Board)

a. Amy Taft spoke to the Board as a NPCC alum and member of the public regarding her thoughts on the recent termination of former NPCC head softball coach Janelle Higgins.

b. NPCC softball players Eden Shimaoka, April Grace, Hailey Ortiz, Nancy Martinez-Sanchez, and Amya Blake-Cosper spoke to the Board regarding their thoughts on the recent termination of former NPCC head softball coach Janelle Higgins.

c. MCC student trustee Graci Nelson updated the Board on student activities in McCook, and NPCC student trustee Reece Halley provided a recap of happenings in North Platte.

d. Board member Kent Miller told the Board about a Hershey High School student who already earned her associate degree from MPCC and has now been accepted into the Kearney Health Opportunities Program, a cooperative program between the University of Nebraska at Kearney and the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

3. CONSENT ITEMS.&nbsp;On a single consent motion, the board approved:

a. Minutes from the Jan. 17 Board work session and regular meeting.

c. The resignation MPCC nurse educator Nicole Kissinger, effective May 15, 2024.

a. The Board approved the diesel program review as presented and the forwarding of the review to the Coordinating Commission for Post Secondary Education.

b. The Board approved the purchase of a V5600M CDL truck simulator and school bus module from Virage Simulation at a cost of $124,742.

c. The Board approved bills for January in the amount of $2,712,914.40.

d. The Board approved the purchase of a 2021 Freightliner M2 36-passenger black KSIR M2-400 from Davey Coach at a cost of $172,295.

e. The Board approved the purchase of three HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen 11 servers from Riverside Technologies at a cost of $67,869.50.

a. The Board heard an enrollment and retention report from Dr. Brian Obert, Dean of Student Life, and Bobbi Muehlenkamp, director of Student Success.

b.
