North Platte, Neb - The National Weather Service at Lee Bird Field in North Platte is forecasting a significant snow storm for this weekend. According to the weather service, snow will develop Thursday night in northwestern Nebraska, then transition south into southwestern Nebraska through Saturday. Accumulations up to 6 inches are possible over the eastern panhandle and western Sandhills.

Turkey Trot 5K & Family Mile race tomorrow, online entries close at 4:00pm today

&nbsp;(Lincoln, Neb.) — As Husker fans make their way to Memorial Stadium, the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) urges drivers to prioritize safety on the road. Remember to buckle up as you navigate gameday and shopping traffic.&nbsp;

Wearing your seatbelt can save lives in rear-end collisions and other incidents, especially on high-traffic routes. Preparing for a fun day at Memorial Stadium should always include wearing your seatbelt the right way. Your seat belt should be placed across the middle of your chest, away from your neck, and across your hips, not your abdomen. Your seatbelt should never be behind your back or under your arm.&nbsp;

And once you’ve bucked up, put your phone down! At 55 miles per hour, sending or reading a text message takes the equivalent time of driving the entire length of a football field with your eyes closed. Your focus on the road is crucial for your safety and the safety of others.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Drivers should also prepare for potential traffic slowdowns before and after the game. NDOT recommends fans heading to the stadium consider the following routes:&nbsp;

Drivers traveling to Lincoln from the east should use the two left lanes on Interstate 80 (I-80) to allow traffic traveling to Nebraska Crossing to utilize the right lane.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Additionally, the southeast exit from Nebraska Crossing and the left turn lane on Nebraska Highway 31 will be closed.&nbsp;

When coming to the game, drivers arriving in Lincoln on I-80 from the west should take Exit 397 (south U.S. Highway 77 (US-77)) to Rosa Parks Way into downtown Lincoln. Drivers arriving in Lincoln on I-80 from the east should take Exit 401 to south Interstate 180 (I-180) into downtown Lincoln.&nbsp;

When leaving the game, drivers should avoid Exit 409 between Lincoln and Waverly as it may be closed due to safety concerns as heavy interstate traffic builds. This may significantly increase traffic on US-6 and cause slowdowns. Leaving downtown Lincoln immediately after the game can put you in heavy traffic. Spending some extra time in town may allow traffic to ease up and provide a smoother ride home.&nbsp;

Within Lincoln, there are several active City of Lincoln construction projects. More information can be found at the City of Lincoln’s street closures map. Fans are reminded that the University of Nebraska has implemented a clear bag policy to enter Memorial Stadium.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Drivers are encouraged to be patient, allow extra time to get to their destinations, plan ahead, and check www.511.nebraska.gov for real time traffic information. Stay safe – buckle up, phone down, avoid distractions, and adjust your speed and following distance if you encounter a slowdown. The nomination deadline is 4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This year’s prize sponsors are Schaben Sanitation, Menards, Brothers Tavern and Cody Keno.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

You have time to get things perfect in your yard: Entries will be judged Friday-Sunday, Dec.15-17. The lights must be on from 5-10 p.m. those nights and must be seen from the street.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The first-place winners from 2022 are ineligible to win a prize in 2023. Otherwise, everyone can compete.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Anyone can nominate a home — it can be your own. Submit the name of owner, address, brief description of the display, a photo (if possible), and any directions that might help locate the property.&nbsp;

This year, participating in business will be a part of a special passport that will be handed out Saturday.&nbsp;

North Platte Optimist Club announces location change, sale dates for Christmas Tree's

The Prairie Arts Center in Platte is one of 20 stops on the statewide&nbsp;Holiday Passport.&nbsp; sponsored by Nebraska Tourism.&nbsp; This is the second year for the Holiday Passport and Holly Carlini, Executive Director at PAC is excited to be one of the stops for this festive event.&nbsp; "Every year the Prairie Arts Center decks our four-floor building with holiday themed artwork, galleries, trees and decor.&nbsp;

 PAC is also the home for the Festival of Trees,&nbsp;so it's just perfect that we're part of the Holiday Passport Program.&nbsp; We will have our annual Festival of Trees Auction, A Stitch in Time Gallery Exhibit, a Veterans themed exhibit in the library, Gift Shop Discounts, pictures with Santa and holiday scavenger hunts".&nbsp;

This holiday-centered passport is a play on the popular summer Passport that will once again showcase some of the best shopping, dining and holiday-ing in our state.&nbsp;"With the success and excitement of last year’s first-ever Nebraska Holiday Passport, we can’t wait to continue with this year’s version," said John Ricks, Nebraska Tourism executive director. "We are looking forward to another great year for our stops and our holiday travelers."

The 2023 Holiday Passport will feature 20 attractions across the state, each with a holiday emphasis. Travelers will have from November 17, 2023, through January 7, 2024 to visit the attractions and get their stamps.&nbsp;Passports will be available at participating stops starting in November or can be pre-ordered at&nbsp;<a href="https://visitnebraska.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=30cc1cad235a879fac111c22b&amp;id=7a9928f75e&amp;e=5a35a4f377" target="_blank">NebraskaPassport.com/holiday</a>.&nbsp;Selected sites (by town)

 </figure>This holiday-centered passport is a play on the popular summer Passport that will once again showcase some of the best shopping, dining and holiday-ing in our state.&nbsp;"With the success and excitement of last year’s first-ever Nebraska Holiday Passport, we can’t wait to continue with this year’s version," said John Ricks, Nebraska Tourism executive director. Call or text, Dianne Morales, at 308-532-5085, and volunteer to take a plate of your Thanksgiving dinner to a North Platte citizen or disabled citizen who will be homebound and alone on Thanksgiving and cannot cook a meal for themselves.

Potential snow in the forecast later in the week

Kevin Kilmer, 27, was sentenced by Judge&nbsp;Mark&nbsp;Kozisek&nbsp;in Cherry County District Court, Valentine, Nebraska, for the 2021 murder of Ruth Wittmuss, 52, which occurred in Kilgore. The trial took place in August of this year.&nbsp;Kilmer was sentenced to life in prison for first-degree murder and an additional 10-14 years for the use of a weapon to commit a felony.&nbsp;

The case was investigated by the Cherry County Sheriff’s Office, the Nebraska State Patrol, with the assistance of the Valentine Police Department and other local agencies. The Cherry County Attorney’s office and the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office prosecuted the case.&nbsp;

OGALLALA - Wolf Auto Ogallala sponsored a Thanksgiving basket event for families in need during the Thanksgiving holiday. Donations were made by individuals and local businesses in the community. The OHS wrestling team came together to help put the goodies together for the Thanksgiving baskets.

Employees with Allo Fiber and community members helped deliver the baskets to families.&nbsp; Families are usually referred by a outside agency such as DHHS, SCIP, and CASA. This year, 80 families were gifted with a basket. Each basket were estimated to be around $85.

North Platte Public Transit will be closed for Thanksgiving Weekend

Post Sports Director had the chance to talk with Haven Smith from the Mid-Plains United Way and also Mark Russell aka Dragon, the President of the Guardians of the Children. The crew talked about what's been going on with the United Way but also giving us an inside of Guardians of the Children.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - The Mid-Plains United Way recently announced late last week that they received a check from Ace Hardware for just a little over $800. Ace Hardware did a dollar round up in the month of October to help raise money for United Way. Mid-Plains United Way has a busy time ahead of them as they have more events coming up.&nbsp;&nbsp;

- North Platte Year End Giving Starts Tuesday, Nov. 28th&nbsp;

-Gift Wrapping: Friday, Dec. 8th - Dec. 10th at Walmart here in North Platte. Presented by Lashley Land&nbsp;

-Triple Bee Holiday Craft Show Concession Stand: Dec. 16th &amp; 17th at the D&amp;N Event Center&nbsp;

-Giving Tree - FNBO at 201 N Dewey to benefit Hope Esperanza and Nebraska Youth Center Dec. 1st-20th.&nbsp;

Guardians of the Children is a non-profit motorcycle organization that helps children that have gone or may be going through child abuse. Members in the organization will attend the court hearings with these children and show their support for the children while they are testifying in court against their perpetrator.&nbsp;

The organization is also hosting a toy drive that will go through Dec. 5th and has partnered with Taco Johns. Both North Platte Taco Johns is doing their Nacho Navidad fundraiser for GOC as they are donating $.25 for Apple Grande &amp; $.50 for a LG Nacho Navidad.&nbsp;

Lincoln, NE – U.S. Acting Secretary of Labor Julie A. Su recognized ALLO as one of the 859 recipients of the 2023 HIRE Vets Medallion Award during a virtual award ceremony presented by the U.S. Department&nbsp; of Labor held on November 8th. ALLO earned the large company 2023 Platinum HIRE Vets Medallion award. This is the&nbsp; fourth year ALLO has been recognized with the HIRE Vets Medallion Award, but it is the first year ALLO has been&nbsp; recognized at the highest award level, Platinum. ALLO RECEIVES THE 2023 HIRE VETS MEDALLION AWARD FROM THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF LABOR 

This week I supported a one-year extension of current Farm Bill programs. While a conventional 5-year reauthorization of the Farm Bill is preferable, many of these critical programs lapsed September 30th. The current lapse shouldn’t affect 2023 crops, but a one-year extension was necessary to prevent reverting back to pre-1930s farm policy as we begin 2024. I’m pleased Congress has acted to ensure American producers will have another year of certainty as they work to put food on our table and fuel in our cars – and now the Agriculture Committees in the House and Senate can finish their work on a new and improved Farm Bill without putting agriculture producers in an impossible position.

Crop insurance, in terms of funding, is a small portion of the Farm Bill; however, its renewal is one of the most important provisions to Nebraska’s producers. Because of the investment protections farmers opt into with their crop insurance premiums, we’re able to avoid ad hoc disaster payments, ultimately saving taxpayer dollars while providing farmers an important safety net.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, in the Nutrition title of the Farm Bill accounts for 80 percent of its cost. As we continue to consider reforms to SNAP, I’m optimistic we can build on legislation we enacted earlier this year to minimize fraud and ensure these programs help Americans most in need.

Modernization and the opportunities available through the advancements of precision agriculture are also an important component of the Farm Bill. Spurring innovation while ensuring farm data is protected is critical to maintaining a level playing field for farmers and ranchers.

This week the House also passed legislation to prevent an omnibus spending bill while keeping the government open by continuing current spending levels for four of the twelve annual appropriations bills until Jan. 19, 2024. The remaining eight bills are funded at current levels through February 2, 2024, giving the House and Senate more time to responsibly cut spending and ensure significant spending decisions are not forced at the last minute with minimal accountability.

Washington must curb its spending addiction, and the federal government must continue working while Congress comes to an agreement on how best to fund our priorities. A shutdown exacerbates backlogs and wait lines at federal agencies and can cause gaps in services Americans rely on.

We can no longer dismiss the need to address our spending problem and continue down this dangerous fiscal path. In order to make meaningful change, we can’t kid ourselves that this can be easily fixed through minor adjustments to annual discretionary spending. What’s known as mandatory spending is the biggest driver of our debt, and this cannot be remedied overnight.

As Moody’s Investors Service has placed the United States credit rating on downgrade watch and the national debt of the U.S. now exceeds $33.6 trillion, we need to aggressively look at the drivers of our debt. This is why I support legislation to create a bipartisan debt commission which would focus on the underlying fiscal problems and solutions to bring America back to fiscal health.

Despite the difficult task of changing how Washington does business, Congress has a responsibility to maintain key policy programs, prudently fund the government, and do what is best for the American people. Just as American households have to balance their budgets, Congress must also. I’m glad we’re finally taking steps in that direction.
