Fire managers have made significant progress the past 24 hours. Containment has increased from 82% to 98%. Firefighters are currently monitoring weather forecasts for the next 48 hours. Portions of the fire are currently under Red Flag warnings. Projected forecasts through the weekend call for contribution of fire weather that may impact the fire footprint. Uncontained areas of the fire are pockets of heavy fuels and trees that still have the potential to ignite and throw hot embers across the fire line.

Yesterdays operations included increasing containment in heavy pockets of timber that pose risks to the fire's edge. Wednesday, an extensive infrared flight provided detailed areas of isolated and significant heat. Some areas in timber pockets pose safety hazards to firefighters, which limits them from suppression efforts. If these areas do not pose any risk for the fire to escape the line, the best way to mitigate these trees is to let the fire consume the fuel. The focus for Wednesday and yesterdays' tactics includes suppressing areas along the eastern edge of the fire identified by the infrared flights. Division A, H and Z have been placed into a patrol and monitor status, meaning firefighters will continue patrols to limit containment line threats. Division K and R will continue to have pockets of heat due to heavy trees being impacted and firefighters actively engaged in suppression efforts.

An initial damage assessment shows the Betty's Way Fire destroyed 4 primary residents and damaged countless outbuildings and agriculture infrastructure. No injuries or fatalities have been reported.

the overall goal for yesterday is to transition from the Nebraska Type 3 Incident Management team to Lincoln County and Custer County agencies and local fire departments. The team would like to thank all those who helped stabilized this wildfire.

The fire is not completely out. There are pockets of heat within the perimeter that will continue to burn and release smoke. We expect to see smoke for many days.

The Betty's Way Fire has been a team effort at the local, county and state level. Firefighters from all across the state assisted in suppressing this fire and have been invaluable assets in bringing it to an end. Future information will be released referencing the massive response provided by Nebraska firefighters.

Division A, H and Z have been placed into a patrol and monitor status, meaning firefighters will continue patrols to limit containment line threats. Division K and R will continue to have pockets of heat due to heavy trees being impacted and firefighters actively engaged in suppression efforts.An initial damage assessment shows the Betty's Way Fire destroyed 4 primary residents and damaged countless outbuildings and agriculture infrastructure. No injuries or fatalities have been reported.the overall goal for yesterday is to transition from the Nebraska Type 3 Incident Management team to Lincoln County and Custer County agencies and local fire departments. The team would like to thank all those who helped stabilized this wildfire.The fire is not completely out. There are pockets of heat within the perimeter that will continue to burn and release smoke. We expect to see smoke for many days.The Betty's Way Fire has been a team effort at the local, county and state level. Firefighters from all across the state assisted in suppressing this fire and have been invaluable assets in bringing it to an end. &nbsp; LINCOLN, Neb. (March 1, 2024) – Nebraska Tourism is excited to announce the stops included in the 2024 Nebraska Passport program. The Passport inspires Nebraskans and tourists to travel throughout&nbsp;the state collecting stamps to earn prizes while also supporting Nebraska's tourism destinations and local businesses.

The Nebraska Passport program is entering its 15th year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Reaching 15 years of helping travelers discover some of Nebraska’s most charming attractions is worth celebrating," said John Ricks, Nebraska Tourism executive director. "Visitors and communities alike benefit from Passport season, and we are once again excited to kick off another round of adventures across the state in 2024."

The 2024 Passport will once again feature 70 attractions and 10 themed categories. Travelers will have from May 1 through September 30 to visit the attractions and collect their stamps.

In honor of the 15th year of the program, this year's Passport will include 15 bonus stops from across the state, which will be in addition to the 70 traditional stops.

&nbsp; "We wanted to do something special for the 15th year of the program," said Madison Johnson, Passport program coordinator. "Often we hear our long-time Passport Champions say they want even more of a challenge and even more adventures. Our 15 bonus stops are made up of fan favorites, voted on by them. It's the perfect way to bring the two together."

Visitors will receive a unique collectible sticker from each of the bonus stops. The bonus stops will have a separate prize entry sheet from the original 70 stops, and stamps from the original stops combined with stamps from the bonus stops cannot be combined for prize totals.&nbsp;&nbsp;

(LEXINGTON, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol have conducted alcohol compliance checks in multiple Nebraska counties in recent weeks.

During the afternoon hours of Friday, February 23, investigators conducted alcohol compliance checks in Dawson County. This project was supported by grant #93.959 under the SAMHSA Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, Region II Human Services, and the Nebraska DHHS Division of Behavioral Health.

In Dawson County, 15 businesses were inspected. One of those businesses sold alcohol to a minor, for a non-compliance rate of 7 percent. The business that sold alcohol to a minor was Casey’s #1747 in Lexington.

During the evening hours of January 25 and February 6, investigators conducted alcohol compliance checks in Adams County. This project was supported by grant #0560 from Area Substance and Alcohol Abuse Prevention in Hastings.

In Adams County, 30 businesses were inspected. One of those businesses sold alcohol to a minor for a non-compliance rate of 3 percent. The business that sold alcohol to a minor was Midtowne Mart in Hastings.

The businesses included convenience stores, grocery stores, restaurants, bars, and liquor stores. Businesses that sell alcohol to a minor are referred to the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission. Clerks who sell alcohol to a minor are cited for procuring alcohol for a minor.

Lincoln, NE – February 29, 2024 – Two big jackpots are up for grabs in the next Mega Millions® and Powerball® drawings. Because of these high jackpots, the Nebraska Lottery reminds customers to play responsibly.

A string of drawings without a jackpot winner has grown the estimated Mega Millions jackpot to its highest level since December 2023. There have been 23 consecutive drawings since December 12 without a jackpot winner. This run has grown the estimated jackpot for the Friday, March 1 drawing to $607 million or $286.9 million with the cash option selected. This is the 8th largest jackpot in Mega Millions history.

Powerball has also seen its jackpot grow over the last few months. There have been 25 drawings since January 3 without a jackpot winner. The estimated jackpot for the Saturday, March 2 drawing is $443 million or $210.3 million with the cash option selected.

The dual jackpot runs have produced some large Nebraska winners.

The largest Mega Millions jackpot on record occurred in August 2023 when one winner in Florida won a $1.602 billion jackpot. The largest Powerball jackpot on record occurred in November 2022 when one winner in California won a $2.040 billion jackpot.

&nbsp; Cattle producers in central Nebraska affected by recent wildfires are invited to attend an informational meeting to learn about resources available to help them recover.

The meeting is Tuesday, March 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the West Central Research, Extension and Education Center in North Platte and will include a free meal sponsored by Nebraska Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster. Please RSVP to the Lincoln Logan-Logan-McPherson County Extension office.

Producers will hear from the Farm Service Agency, Natural Resource Conservation Service, Nebraska Extension, Nebraska Cattlemen and others who can answer questions about assistance programs and cattle and range management after a fire. The recent fires burned more than 70,000 acres in central Nebraska.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Our message to producers at this point is to not get in a hurry," said Bruce Solko, Lincoln County FSA executive director. "As unpleasant as it is, they need to document any livestock losses with photos or documentation of loss by a veterinarian. Producers can receive compensation for the loss of value of an animal affected by the fire when they are sold or die up to 30 days after the fire. Any losses that are not immediate will need a veterinarian statement as to cause of death. Animals that were sold because of the fire require sale receipts."

Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen declared a disaster for central Nebraska on Monday, Feb. 26.

FSA and NRCS have programs that can help producers with replacing fence, and funding management alternatives to grazing burned areas, in addition to livestock losses. However, those take time to put in motion and are subject to approval, so those agencies recommend producers who are thinking of using those programs talk to staff at their local offices before buying supplies or taking any action.

Miller Repair in Maxwell, Maline Seed and Fence in Gothenburg and Lincoln County Cattlemen are part of the community efforts coordinating donations of fencing, feed, windbreak materials or sheds, money and labor.

Maria Miller, whose husband, Ivan, has owned Miller Repair for 38 years said they did this during the floods in 2019 and are happy to help their neighbors. Their place was close to the fire, but it missed them, so Millers can focus on the relief efforts for those who weren’t so lucky. Ivan knows most of the people affected personally, as they’re customers or neighbors, so he’s making sure the donations are going only to those who need it, Maria said. 

One of their neighbors lost all of their calving facilities in the middle of calving season, so they’re looking for cattle sheds, windbreaks, corral materials, panels and anything else that can help them and other affected producers get beyond this already stressful season.

"It just rips your heart out," Maria said. "I’m thankful we can do this."People have been generous with feed donations, but transporting the hay is a current need, Maria said.

Monetary donations can be made at Equitable Bank in North Platte, and those funds will be administered by the Lincoln County Cattlemen.

Randy Saner, UNL Extension educator in Lincoln-Logan-McPherson Counties, said his office is available to help connect producers with resources to get through this time. "You hope this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but there are other people who have been through it," Saner said. "We learn all we can from each situation like this so we can share that information. We have resources that can help producers find feed, make a plan for their forage recovery, figure rations and how much feed they’ll need, address animal health issues and manage their own stress. We are also working with the organizations that are providing relief to make sure producers who need help are getting connected to the help available."

Cornhusker State Games Cycle Tour Makes the Move to North Platte

NORTH PLATTE, NEB. – The Lincoln County Farm Bureau will host a town hall meeting with Sen. Mike Jacobson of District 42. The town hall meeting will take place Friday, March 8, at 6:30 p.m. at the McKinley Education Center. The meeting is free and open to the public.

The Hot Sheets: February 29th, 2024

Lincoln, Neb., Feb. 28, 2024—Omaha Fashion Week’s Spring 2024 show kicked off with the future generations of fashion showcasing nearly 200 creations. The event featured high school-age programs from around the state and students in the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Textiles, Merchandising, and Fashion Design Program. Fashion Week took place at the Omaha Design Center and has become one of the Midwest’s largest fashion events.

"This is a great opportunity to feature the outstanding work of our 4-H designers at a regional level, in partnership with Omaha Fashion Week," said Marie Nelson, Nebraska Extension assistant. 

Omaha Fashion Week is highlighting themes of self-expression during its Spring 2024 Audacious Season. The first half of the show started with high-school-age fashion design programs from all over Nebraska, including: 4-H, Duchesne Academy, FCCLA, Kent Bellows Mentoring Program, Omaha South, Westside HS, and Bluebird Cultural Initiative. The collection included youth who sewed their garments in 2023, with 32 selected to participate in the 4-H collection.

From high schools to the runway: Omaha Fashion Week's showcase of emerging designers

At 6PM on the 26 of February North Platte dispatch received a report of a fire near the damn at Lake Maloney and on South Buffalo.  Dispatch also received several reports of a blue 4 door sedan driving in the area moments after the fires started.  One caller reported that she had a recording of the vehicle on her dash cam.   It was also reported that it was north bound on Buffalo and was last seen at the rec. center. 

 A deputy made contact with the three, young male occupants of a blue Chevrolet Impala at the rec center.  Two other deputies met with the fire department at the east end of the dam.  Fire Chief Thompson had located numerous fireworks as well as an artillery shell tube that was  on the roadway.  A witness reported that he had seen the blue car in the area and describe the three occupants as school aged males.  Another witness reported hearing a loud bang just before the fires started. 

 The footage from the dash cam was retrieved and it too showed the blue Impala.  Another witness who followed the blue Impala recognized it and knew the owner.  A deputy interviewed three suspects.  They all admitted to being in the blue Impala when the fireworks were lit that lit the grass fire but all three blamed the actual discharge of the fireworks on each other.  One suspect was 18-year-old Brenttyn Bo, a 15-year-old male and a 16-year-old male.  All three received a citation for Arson, 3rd degree and Criminal Mischief. 

 There were two other large fires in the area, the same day.  One was the Betty’s Way fire that burned more than 70,000 acres and the other fire was near Stapleton.  The four fires source of ignition have nothing in common.  The Betty’s Way fire was ignited by a spark from a lawn mower and the Stapelton fire was ignited by a smoldering manure pile.&nbsp;&nbsp;
