Ogallala speech team takes third in Gothenburg, many students placed

This year, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is teaming up with local law enforcement to remind football fans this Super Bowl Sunday that “Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk”.&nbsp; The North Platte Police Department will have extra officers patrolling the streets in an effort to take drunk/drugged drivers off the road.&nbsp;

North Platte Police Department to have extra officers on patrol during Super Bowl Sunday

KEARNEY, NEB. – Young farmers, ranchers, and agribusiness professionals from across Nebraska gathered in Kearney to connect with their peers, engage in meaningful conversation, and discover new opportunities in agriculture. 

The Nebraska Farm Bureau (NEFB) Young Farmers and Ranchers (YF&amp;R) Conference held many insightful breakout sessions designed to bring value to a young person’s farm, ranch, or agribusiness career. At the end of the conference finalists were named in the Discussion Meet contest. The YF&amp;R Conference was held Feb. 2-3 at the Younes Conference Center in Kearney.

“The YF&amp;R Conference is designed by young farmers and ranchers for young farmers and ranchers to provide an opportunity for personal and professional growth in young agriculture professionals,” said Audrey Schipporeit Nebraska Farm Bureau’s director of generational engagement.

This year’s conference offered innovative local agriculture tours on Friday and a concert by Logan Mize. On Saturday, mental health in agriculture was the topic for keynote speaker Marshall Sewell. He explained that prioritizing mental health leads to an overall healthy life and gave easy solutions to make that prioritization a reality. The workshops brought together young people in agriculture with like-minded interests in cattle, sheep, marketing products from farm to plate, crop nutrition, and how to build the best balance for your farm or ranch.

“The YF&amp;R Conference is my favorite opportunity to connect with people who share the same walk of life as me,” said new YF&amp;R Committee Chair, Josh England of Hall County. “I appreciate that Farm Bureau provides us the opportunity to develop as leaders and learn from industry professionals how to better our farms and ranches.”

The annual Discussion Meet competition was held during the conference. It is designed to simulate a committee meeting that proposes solutions to an issue being discussed. Competitors are evaluated on their ability to provide innovative solutions, cooperatively engage in conversation, and position Farm Bureau as an agent of change. Contestants competed in two rounds of discussion to determine a final four.

The four finalists in the 2024 YF&amp;R Discussion Meet contest are Lydia O’Brien of Arthur County, David Schuler of Morrill County, Katie Keller of Thomas County, and Cory Johnson of Loup County. These four individuals advanced to the NEFB YF&amp;R Discussion Meet to be held at the 2024 NEFB Annual Meeting and Convention Dec. 9-11.&nbsp;&nbsp;Sheridan Swotek and Sean Krebs both of Buffalo County, were named alternates.

All four finalists received a $50 prize and a chance to compete nationally for $500 and an all-expense paid trip to represent Nebraska in the American Farm Bureau YF&amp;R Discussion Meet in San Antonio, January 24-29, 2025. Farm Bureau members between the ages of 18 and 35 are eligible to compete in the YF&amp;R Discussion Meet.

Retiring YF&amp;R Committee members were recognized during the event and the new YF&amp;R committee was announced. Nebraska Farm Bureau Connects with Young Ag Professionals and Names Discussion Meet Finalists at its YF&R Conference

LEXINGTON, NE – The Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation surprised Sandoz Elementary School teacher Ivette Kinney with the 2024 Nebraska Agriculture in the Classroom Teacher of the Year award at a school assembly on Feb. 5. The award is given to outstanding teachers that incorporate agriculture into their classroom through innovative ideas and lessons.

“Ivette Kinney’s active participation and enthusiastic spirit make her a great fit to be awarded the 2024 Nebraska Agriculture in the Classroom Teacher of the Year. Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation is so excited to honor Ivette Kinney,” said Courtney Shreve, senior director of outreach education.

Kinney, a second-grade teacher at Sandoz Elementary, incorporates agriculture in her classroom through a key Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation program, Classroom Visits. As a first-time participant, she signed herself up for classroom visits, and then recruited her entire second-grade team to participate. Every second-grade student, in eight classrooms at Sandoz Elementary, participated in a Classroom Visit this past year and learned about agriculture.

“Incorporating Agriculture in the Classroom has been helpful in teaching students the connection between the farm and their table. Many of my students come from diverse backgrounds and many may not even have the background knowledge to know where their food or supplies come from,” said Kinney.

Kinney attended the Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation conference, Making the Connection, in June 2023 and picked up new resources to enhance her summer school program. “During Summer School, agriculture gave students an enrichment in fourth and fifth grade to learn more about the background of how energy plays a role in our lives. We used hands-on activities to really engage their learning. I have learned a great deal myself as I am not from a farming background,” said Kinney.

Kinney will receive an expense-paid trip to the National Agriculture in the Classroom Conference, an accurate agriculture book bundle, and a $250 Amazon gift card. The conference held June 24-27, 2024, in Salt Lake City, Utah, brings educators together from all over the United States to learn how to use agricultural concepts to effectively teach core subjects such as reading, math, science, and social studies. The conference features recognition for Teacher of the Year honorees, educational workshops, traveling workshops to agribusinesses and research facilities, and farm tours.

Lexington Teacher Surprised with Teacher of the Year Award for Bringing Agriculture into the Classroom

LINCOLN — A filibuster stretching over three days derailed a proposal Friday to require two-person crews on trains operated by major railroads in Nebraska.

State Sen. Mike Jacobson of North Platte — a major railroad center in the state — brought the proposal. He was able to advance it to floor debate in the State Legislature for the first time after years of trying by other senators.

But supporters failed to garner the needed 33 votes Friday to halt a filibuster and advance Legislative Bill 31. The vote was 24-19 to invoke cloture.

Jacobson argued that LB 31 that would increase safety by providing a second set of eyes on rail hazards and someone who could inform first responders, in the event of a derailment, about hazardous chemicals on the train.

Derailments and other safety problems are on the rise, the senator said, and include an explosion and fire on a train in North Platte’s Bailey Yards in September that prompted evacuations due to a cloud of toxic smoke.

The safety issue drew national attention a year ago when 28 cars of a Norfolk Southern train carrying hazardous chemicals derailed near East Palestine, Ohio, requiring the evacuation of hundreds of people.

More than 176,000 tons of contaminated soil has been removed from the accident site. In addition, 1,200 private wells and the municipal water system were tested in the area. The tests showed no impacts, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Train engineers, Jacobson said, are required to stay in the cab, even in the event of an accident. He added that a second crew member on a train can speed the “breaking” of a train when first responders need to cross a crossing blocked by a parked train.

“Would you feel comfortable flying without a co-pilot?” Jacobson asked.&nbsp;

Currently, 11 states, including neighboring Kansas and Colorado, have two-man crew requirements.

Union Pacific runs two-person crews on its over-the-road trains, as do other railroads, including the Burlington Northern Santa Fe. A UP spokeswoman said that the crew size issue came up in recent labor negotiations but was later not included in the agreement reached.

Opponents argued that lawmakers were interfering in what is a matter for labor negotiations and federal regulation and that Nebraska ought to wait for the feds to act on the controversial issue pitting labor unions against management.

Sen. Julie Slama of Dunbar said such a bill interfered with interstate commerce, and Omaha Sen. Kathleen Kauth said there’s no proof that two-man crews reduce derailments. Several countries, she added, have safely switched to one-person train crews.

Another opponent of the bill, Sen. Lou Ann Linehan of Elkhorn, pointed out that Union Pacific is one of the state’s top employers and a top payer of property taxes.

Jacobson pushed back on that comment, saying that “safety” rules shouldn’t be determined on how much a company pays in taxes.

The federal government might soon weigh in on this issue.

A ruling from the Federal Railroad Administration is pending on a proposal to require two crew members except “for those operations that do not pose significant safety risks to railroad employees, the public, or the environment.”

LINCOLN, NE -- As part of a comprehensive plan to reverse Nebraska’s brain drain and compete more effectively for top talent, Governor Jim Pillen today joined University of Nebraska (NU) Interim President Chris Kabourek and representatives from the Board of Regents in announcing a new scholarship for the state’s top ACT scorers. The program will cover the total cost of undergraduate attendance, plus stipends, at any NU campus.

Beginning in the 2024-25 academic year, the Office of the President will fund a new Nebraska Presidential Scholars Program that will cover tuition, fees, books, housing and all other costs of attendance, plus a $5,000 annual stipend, for any Nebraska student who scores a perfect 36 on the ACT. The announcement from the Governor and university was widely praised by agricultural, philanthropic, business and elected leaders who endorsed the vision to compete for Nebraska’s homegrown talent to meet the future needs of the state.

“This is a simple, but powerful, message to our best and brightest young people: We want you on Team Nebraska,” said Gov. Pillen. “As I travel around the state and talk to business and community leaders, something I hear again and again is that we need to do a better job of competing for talent. With the Presidential Scholars Program, we’re going to compete. I’m proud to join with President Kabourek and the Board of Regents in putting this bold plan forward.”

Kabourek said: “Governor Pillen has challenged all of us to step up and work together to solve Nebraska’s brain drain. Kabourek said NU is immediately launching a fundraising effort as part of its ongoing&nbsp;Only in Nebraska&nbsp;campaign to raise private funds to create a permanent Presidential Scholars endowment that will extend the program beyond those who achieve a 36 ACT. Ultimately, the university’s goal is to provide total cost of attendance scholarships to all Nebraska students who score a 33 or above.

“My message to every Nebraska student and every parent is that if you’re willing to work hard, the University of Nebraska will do everything we can to help you become the best version of yourself and get a great education that will prepare you for success,” said Kabourek.

On average over the past three years, about 600 Nebraska students a year score at least a 33, including about 30 who score a perfect 36. But less than half of those students enroll at the University of Nebraska, including only 22 percent of students with a 36. Meanwhile, Nebraska faces a persistent brain drain, at a time when the state urgently needs more workforce to fill current and future jobs.

The university’s goal is to enroll 80 percent of students who score a 33 or higher, Kabourek shared. Furthermore, he said that elite academic performers who choose the University of Nebraska should be celebrated the way student-athletes are, with signing ceremonies and public attention to signal Nebraska’s pride in retaining them in the state.

“When we say we want the University of Nebraska to compete, this is exactly what we mean. I am thrilled that we are taking bold action to keep more of Nebraska’s best and brightest here in our state,” said Board of Regents chairman Tim Clare of Lincoln. “This is a win for our university, for students, our workforce and Nebraska’s national profile.”

The university is maintaining its prestigious Regents Scholarship, which covers full tuition costs for high academic performers, as well as its investment in need-based financial aid through the Nebraska Promise program, which provides free tuition for Nebraska students whose families earn $65,000 or less per year.

Kabourek, along with members of the Board of Regents, will join Governor Pillen on a road show this spring to visit Nebraska high schools and community events to promote the Presidential Scholars Program and other opportunities at the university, encouraging students to stay in the state to earn their degrees and start their careers.

“I am pleased to announce that Dawson Public Power District received a significant bond rating upgrade from Standard &amp; Poor's, moving from an A to an A+,” said Dawson PPD Board President Dan Muhlbach.

“These bond upgrades are difficult to attain, which underscores the board's commitment to balancing financial responsibility with upgrading the distribution system and keeping rates low.”

He also credits Nebraska Public Power District’s stable wholesale electric rates as part of the success.

General Manager, Gwen Kautz, said “I have to credit the district’s management team for their consistent efforts to control costs over the past few years. It’s been challenging but they have exceeded my expectations.”

In its report, S&amp;P stated, “the district has delivered robust financial performance during the past three years.” It also said that the cancellation of the merger with The Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District did not have a meaningful impact on Dawson PPD’s creditworthiness.

The upgrade in the S&amp;P rating means that Dawson PPD is eligible for lower interest rates on bonds. Dawson PPD uses bonds to finance multi-million dollar upgrades to the power grid, while minimizing the impact on electric ratepayers.

S&amp;P ratings are based on a business’s ability to meet their financial obligations. During the rating process financial reports and cash flows are analyzed. Key personnel were interviewed about business practices and future plans.

Dawson Public Power District provides electricity to small towns and rural customers in south central Nebraska. Because dependable, safe, and affordable power is important to the ratepayers, each year the District proactively budgets funds to maintain and refurbish portions of the electrical grid. In 2023, Dawson PPD’s customers rated satisfaction with the District as excellent. Dawson PPD employs 80 people and has a total utility plant value of over $247 million.

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) announces their 15th annual Radon Poster Contest winners.&nbsp; Students aged 9 to 14 made posters about the hazards of radon gas, which is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Entries were judged in December and presentations were held at three schools in January for Radon Action Month.

“The radon poster contest is a fun way for students to learn more about the high levels of radon we have here in Nebraska and what can be done about it,” explains Joy Trail, Radon Program Manager at SWNPHD. “The students are very creative. Our&nbsp;congratulations&nbsp;go to all of them for helping to educate our communities about the dangers of radon and how to reduce the risk of lung cancer.”

Across more than seven FBI field offices in the last two weeks, nearly 200 people have been charged as part of a series of arrests targeting large-scale drug-trafficking organizations operating throughout the United States and North America.

"As demonstrated by the sweep of arrests and criminal charges filed nationwide over the last two weeks alone, the FBI will never stop until violent criminals are taken off the streets and brought to justice, making our communities safer,” said FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate. “The FBI works relentlessly day and night alongside local, state, and federal law enforcement partners across the country to arrest and neutralize the most dangerous violent offenders and dismantle the criminal enterprises behind them. This is a snapshot of the work our dedicated personnel are committed to doing 24/7, and the community impact occurring each and every day.”

&nbsp; FBI Omaha:&nbsp;On January 23, an operation led by the FBI Omaha Field Office and the Nebraska State Patrol led to the arrest of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fbi.gov/contact-us/field-offices/omaha/news/drug-task-force-operation-leads-to-19-arrests">19 people</a>&nbsp;and the unsealing of at least nine indictments&nbsp;for their roles as part of a methamphetamine distribution ring operating throughout Nebraska with ties to Kentucky and California. Those arrested face a variety of charges to include conspiracy to distribute over 500 grams of methamphetamine, possessing a firearm during and in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.&nbsp;

FBI Los Angeles:&nbsp;On January 30,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/federal-indictments-allege-international-organized-crime-syndicate-imported-and-exported" target="_blank">ten people</a>&nbsp;were arrested in multiple North American cities in relation to two federal indictments charging members of an organized crime syndicate who allegedly conspired to traffic and import hundreds of kilograms of cocaine and other controlled substances from Mexico through Los Angeles for export to Canada or redistribution throughout the U.S.

The indictments allege illicit drug trafficking activity cumulatively involving approximately 845 kilograms (1,860 pounds) of methamphetamine, 951 kilograms (2,092 pounds) of cocaine, 20 kilograms (44 pounds) of fentanyl, and 4 kilograms (nearly 9 pounds) of heroin. Over $900,000 in cash was seized during the investigation. The estimated wholesale value of the narcotics seized was between $16 and 28 million.

“Until today, the organized members of this conspiracy operated with impunity throughout the many thousands of miles that comprise the North American continent, poisoning communities along the way,” said Assistant Director in Charge Donald Alway of the FBI Los Angeles Field Office. “The strength of this partnership cannot be overstated. The agents and detectives on this case did an outstanding job of pooling resources and worked seamlessly across borders toward a mutual goal of putting this massive drug pipeline out of business.”

The indictments are a result of a series of coordinated arrests made following a targeted multiagency investigation that spanned several months.Over the last year, the FBI Columbia Field Office assisted local and state law enforcement agencies in an advanced, intelligence-based, multifaceted law enforcement operation to identify communities in Myrtle Beach that were experiencing high levels of gang- and narcotics-related violence. Agents seized multiple firearms, ammunition, and various dangerous drugs, such as fentanyl.FBI Anchorage:&nbsp;On January 25, Special Agent in Charge Antony Jung of the FBI Anchorage Field Office, the U.S Attorney’s Office for the District of Alaska, and a multitude of local, state, and federal partners announced that&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fbi.gov/contact-us/field-offices/anchorage/news/us-attorneys-office-announces-charges-in-alaska-organized-drug-crime-ring">53 people</a>&nbsp;have been charged through nine indictments in connection with a large-scale organized crime ring operating within the state of Alaska. Charges include drug trafficking, violent crime, conspiracy to distribute fentanyl resulting in death, continuing criminal enterprise, and money laundering. Court documents identified at least 76 separate money-laundering transactions as part of the investigation, including some made internationally to Mexico.From February 2022 to July 2023, law enforcement intercepted roughly 36 kilograms of fentanyl, 27.3 kilograms of meth, 11.3 kilograms of heroin, and 118 grams of cocaine connected to the enterprise, with the majority destined for various communities across the state of Alaska. According to the indictments, the enterprise mainly used high-level suppliers to send drug packages through the U.S. Postal Service from Oregon and California to Alaskan communities, from the most populous cities to some of Alaska’s smallest villages.FBI Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Richmond:&nbsp;On January 24,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fbi.gov/contact-us/field-offices/pittsburgh/news/investigators-dismantle-fentanyl-drug-trafficking-network-in-eastern-panhandle">82 people</a>&nbsp;were indicted by a federal grand jury for a drug trafficking operation that distributed fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine as a result of a collaborative investigative effort by the FBI Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Richmond field offices.“In a coordinated effort across three states, the FBI and our partners worked seamlessly to degrade the capabilities of a criminal enterprise that endangered the lives of our children and neighbors by pedaling illegal narcotics into our communities,” said Acting Special Agent in Charge Mike Shanahan of the FBI Pittsburgh Division. “Today, their illicit activities came to an end.”The investigation yielded 10 kilograms of fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, firearms, and hundreds of thousands of dollars in assets, with individuals from Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia being charged with drug trafficking.The investigation and prosecution of these cases are part of Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) operations, which aim to identify, disrupt, and dismantle the highest-level drug traffickers, money launderers, gangs, and transnational criminal organizations that threaten the United States by using a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven, multiagency approach that leverages the strengths of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies against criminal networks.
