Across more than seven FBI field offices in the last two weeks, nearly 200 people have been charged as part of a series of arrests targeting large-scale drug-trafficking organizations operating throughout the United States and North America.

&nbsp; FBI Omaha:&nbsp;On January 23, an operation led by the FBI Omaha Field Office and the Nebraska State Patrol led to the arrest of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fbi.gov/contact-us/field-offices/omaha/news/drug-task-force-operation-leads-to-19-arrests">19 people</a>&nbsp;and the unsealing of at least nine indictments&nbsp;for their roles as part of a methamphetamine distribution ring operating throughout Nebraska with ties to Kentucky and California. Those arrested face a variety of charges to include conspiracy to distribute over 500 grams of methamphetamine, possessing a firearm during and in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.&nbsp;

FBI Los Angeles:&nbsp;On January 30,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/federal-indictments-allege-international-organized-crime-syndicate-imported-and-exported" target="_blank">ten people</a>&nbsp;were arrested in multiple North American cities in relation to two federal indictments charging members of an organized crime syndicate who allegedly conspired to traffic and import hundreds of kilograms of cocaine and other controlled substances from Mexico through Los Angeles for export to Canada or redistribution throughout the U.S.

The indictments allege illicit drug trafficking activity cumulatively involving approximately 845 kilograms (1,860 pounds) of methamphetamine, 951 kilograms (2,092 pounds) of cocaine, 20 kilograms (44 pounds) of fentanyl, and 4 kilograms (nearly 9 pounds) of heroin. Over $900,000 in cash was seized during the investigation. The estimated wholesale value of the narcotics seized was between $16 and 28 million.

“Until today, the organized members of this conspiracy operated with impunity throughout the many thousands of miles that comprise the North American continent, poisoning communities along the way,” said Assistant Director in Charge Donald Alway of the FBI Los Angeles Field Office. “The strength of this partnership cannot be overstated. The agents and detectives on this case did an outstanding job of pooling resources and worked seamlessly across borders toward a mutual goal of putting this massive drug pipeline out of business.”

FBI Columbia:&nbsp;On January 29, the FBI Columbia Field Office, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of South Carolina, and other local and state law enforcement agencies announced that&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fbi.gov/contact-us/field-offices/columbia/news/multi-agency-take-down-results-in-illegal-narcotics-firearm-offenses-and-conspiracy-charges">more than a dozen individuals</a>&nbsp;were charged in federal court in connection with&nbsp;narcotics, firearms, and conspiracy offenses after a targeted violent crime reduction initiative in Myrtle Beach and the surrounding areas. The indictments are a result of a series of coordinated arrests made following a targeted multiagency investigation that spanned several months.

Over the last year, the FBI Columbia Field Office assisted local and state law enforcement agencies in an advanced, intelligence-based, multifaceted law enforcement operation to identify communities in Myrtle Beach that were experiencing high levels of gang- and narcotics-related violence. The joint investigation has led to 13 defendants facing federal charges. Agents seized multiple firearms, ammunition, and various dangerous drugs, such as fentanyl.

FBI Anchorage:&nbsp;On January 25, Special Agent in Charge Antony Jung of the FBI Anchorage Field Office, the U.S Attorney’s Office for the District of Alaska, and a multitude of local, state, and federal partners announced that&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fbi.gov/contact-us/field-offices/anchorage/news/us-attorneys-office-announces-charges-in-alaska-organized-drug-crime-ring">53 people</a>&nbsp;have been charged through nine indictments in connection with a large-scale organized crime ring operating within the state of Alaska. Charges include drug trafficking, violent crime, conspiracy to distribute fentanyl resulting in death, continuing criminal enterprise, and money laundering. Court documents identified at least 76 separate money-laundering transactions as part of the investigation, including some made internationally to Mexico.

From February 2022 to July 2023, law enforcement intercepted roughly 36 kilograms of fentanyl, 27.3 kilograms of meth, 11.3 kilograms of heroin, and 118 grams of cocaine connected to the enterprise, with the majority destined for various communities across the state of Alaska. According to the indictments, the enterprise mainly used high-level suppliers to send drug packages through the U.S. Postal Service from Oregon and California to Alaskan communities, from the most populous cities to some of Alaska’s smallest villages.

FBI Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Richmond:&nbsp;On January 24,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fbi.gov/contact-us/field-offices/pittsburgh/news/investigators-dismantle-fentanyl-drug-trafficking-network-in-eastern-panhandle">82 people</a>&nbsp;were indicted by a federal grand jury for a drug trafficking operation that distributed fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine as a result of a collaborative investigative effort by the FBI Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Richmond field offices.

“In a coordinated effort across three states, the FBI and our partners worked seamlessly to degrade the capabilities of a criminal enterprise that endangered the lives of our children and neighbors by pedaling illegal narcotics into our communities,” said Acting Special Agent in Charge Mike Shanahan of the FBI Pittsburgh Division. “Today, their illicit activities came to an end.”

The investigation yielded 10 kilograms of fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, firearms, and hundreds of thousands of dollars in assets, with individuals from Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia being charged with drug trafficking.

An “intent to apply” in the form of a letter must be returned to Visit North Platte by Monday,&nbsp; April 1, 2024, stating an estimate of the amount to be requested in the grant application, the&nbsp; total project cost, a brief description of the proposed project, and the organizations involved in&nbsp; the project. Organizations that do not submit an intent to apply letter by the deadline will not&nbsp; be eligible to receive Improvement Funds. Qualified organizations are 501(c)3, not-for-profit, or&nbsp; divisions of local government.&nbsp;

Following a review of the intent to apply letter, the staff of Visit North Platte will schedule a&nbsp; meeting with potential applicants to discuss their projects and determine if they are eligible for&nbsp; funding under the guidelines of the Nebraska Visitors Development Act. For those projects&nbsp; given approval to submit a full application, the application will be made available immediately&nbsp; and the due date for the completed application will be Wednesday, July 31, 2024. Vaccines for Children Public Clinics in February

Cooper Franzen, of Brady, has been selected as the Business Student of the Month for February at North Platte Community College.

Franzen graduated from Brady High School in 2022 and is currently studying business and accounting at NPCC.

“I selected NPCC for multiple reasons,” Franzen said. “I wanted to stay close to home, I wanted to find out for sure what I wanted to go into and I wanted to stay at a smaller school.”

Franzen is on track to graduate from NPCC in May. After that, he plans to transfer to the University of Nebraska at Kearney and continue his accounting studies.

“NPCC has done so much for me,” Franzen said. “When I first came to NPCC, I was super nervous, and I did not know a single person. After just a couple of days, I made numerous new friends. The faculty has also been great. I have learned so much. At a lot of big universities, as a student, you are just another number, but that is not the case at NPCC. Here, you get to really know the instructors and your instructors get to know you.”

Lynn Lupomech, accounting instructor, nominated Franzen for the recognition.

“I have had the privilege of being Cooper’s instructor in multiple accounting courses,” Lupomech said. “He is positive, enthusiastic and friendly to both faculty and his classmates. He consistently arrives each day prepared and ready to actively engage in the learning process. Cooper is truly an outstanding student.”

When not studying, Franzen can be found outdoors, enjoying activities such as hunting, fishing and spending time with family and friends.

His parents are Bryan and Brande Franzen, of Brady.

 </figure>Heather JohnsonNPCCCooper Franzen, of Brady, has been selected as the Business Student of the Month for February at North Platte Community College.Franzen graduated from Brady High School in 2022 and is currently studying business and accounting at NPCC.“I selected NPCC for multiple reasons,” Franzen said. “I wanted to stay close to home, I wanted to find out for sure what I wanted to go into and I wanted to stay at a smaller school.”Franzen is on track to graduate from NPCC in May. After that, he plans to transfer to the University of Nebraska at Kearney and continue his accounting studies.“NPCC has done so much for me,” Franzen said. “When I first came to NPCC, I was super nervous, and I did not know a single person. After just a couple of days, I made numerous new friends. The faculty has also been great. I have learned so much. At a lot of big universities, as a student, you are just another number, but that is not the case at NPCC. Here, you get to really know the instructors and your instructors get to know you.”Lynn Lupomech, accounting instructor, nominated Franzen for the recognition.“I have had the privilege of being Cooper’s instructor in multiple accounting courses,” Lupomech said. “He is positive, enthusiastic and friendly to both faculty and his classmates. He consistently arrives each day prepared and ready to actively engage in the learning process. Cooper is truly an outstanding student.”When not studying, Franzen can be found outdoors, enjoying activities such as hunting, fishing and spending time with family and friends.His parents are Bryan and Brande Franzen, of Brady.

NORTH PLATTE - The New Opportunity Thrift Store (NOTS) is under new management and has been blooming under manager Elaine Pelster. The NOTS has plenty to offer in sales and specials. The NOTS helps individuals with disabilities to help them learn the basics of running a store.&nbsp; Clean, sorted items, and pricing are just a few skills they learn while working at the NOTS. Hours at the store are Monday-Friday from 9:00am - 5:00pm and Saturdays from 10:00am - 3:00pm.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Post News Director Canon Rath chatted with Tara Krupicka about the Farm and Ranch Expo coming to the D&amp;N Event Center this week.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - The Farm and Ranch Expo is quickly approaching and will be the D&amp;N Event Center this Wednesday and Thursday. Wednesday event will take place from 9:00am - 6:00pm while Thursday event will be from 9:00am - 4:00pm. The event is free, and everyone is welcome to attend.&nbsp;

This year, FFA students have a chance to participate in the FFA Passport. The FFA Passport has vendors who have signed up and students must visit the vendors and if they go to all the vendors, they can drop off their passport at the chamber table for a potential prize. Proceeds from this year's event will also help raise scholarships for local students who are interested in going into the Ag field.&nbsp;

Students from Ogallala High School are gaining valuable skills in applied technology thanks to a new Ready-to-Work Building Construction program.

The program, offered through the Mid-Plains Community College Ogallala Campus, was designed with a dual purpose in mind. It provides an educational opportunity for students who might be interested in a career in the trades and also serves as an effort to meet workforce needs in Keith County.

“We know education is changing, and we know employers are looking to hire people with skills, not just degrees,” said Mary Pierce, MPCC Ogallala Campus administrator. “Most contractors in Keith County would love to hire entry-level employees with skills.”

Casey Craig, owner of Unit #24 Welding and Construction in Ogallala, is one of them. He is the instructor for the class.

“There’s definitely a lot of need for laborers in general in the trades, let alone someone who has the basic skills,” Craig said. “That’s what we are trying to teach here, so [these students] can come into the field and have the basic skills and knowledge to be useful. I took this position because I’ve been trying to hire someone for the past two years and finally came to the realization that I could either continue complaining about it or do something about it – not just for my business and my sake but for the rest of the community.”

The RTWBC program is based out of the MPCC Ogallala Campus.

The four students in the program were selected through the high school. Together, they are building a 16 by 20-foot structure that could be used for a variety of purposes such as a tiny house, shed or workshop. It will have a porch and railing on the front. The students are learning all aspects of home building in the process – everything from framing and windows to trusses and roofing.

“I was excited when I heard about this opportunity because I want to go into building construction,” said Hailey Tolander, a junior at Ogallala High School. “We’re learning about measurements and how to cut stuff. It’s been a really fun learning experience.”

The class meets two days per week. Work started in January and will continue into March. After successful completion of the program, the students will receive a Building Construction Technology certificate from MPCC.

The finished building will be auctioned in the spring, and proceeds will be put toward a future class.

“The MPCC Ready-to-Work program has been a great experience for our students,” said John O’Neil, principal of Ogallala High School. “The opportunity to work on this project has been fun and rewarding for them. Through hands-on learning, they’re not only gaining construction skills, but also building a foundation of resilience, teamwork and tangible skills that will last a lifetime.”

The MPCC Ogallala Campus is able to offer the RTWBC program for free thanks to a combination of grant funding and sponsors.

The majority of funds for RTWBC came from an $8,333 grant that will be provided annually over five years by the Nebraska Investment Finance Authority’s Teaching Nebraska Trades program.

Teaching Nebraska Trades is designed to encourage students to enter the construction trades, especially those focused on residential housing, and to motivate them to seek out training at the community college level.

The overall goal is to build sustainable programs supporting trade education in Nebraska after the initial pilot years have concluded.

Local and regional businesses, including Ogallala’s Mead Lumber and First Star Recycling, also contributed materials for the RTWBC program.

Nebraska Tourism announces tourism grant recipients

Update: The wanted male Martin Palomo is in custody this afternoon with the assistance from Gering Police Department, Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office, National Park Service, and Gering Fire Department. Palomo was located in Gering and taken into custody without incident.

A warrant for the arrest of Scottsbluff man has been issued in connection to a stabbing on January 1st in Morrill.&nbsp; Authorities were notified of a female stabbing victim that was treated at the Regional West Medical Center Emergency Room early morning on New Year's Day. 

Officers responded and determined that the 40-year-old female victim had been stabbed in the abdomen and sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The incident occurred at a local residence and the victim was transported to the hospital by two roommates following the incident.

During the investigation the suspect was identified as 52-year-old MARTIN PALOMO of Scottsbluff, Nebraska. An arrest warrant has been issued for Palomo, charging him with 1st Degree Domestic Assault (Class IIA Felony), Use of a Deadly Weapon to Commit a Felony (Class II Felony), Possession of a Deadly Weapon by Prohibited Person (Class III Felony), Burglary (Class IIA Felony) and Terroristic Threats (Class IIIA Felony). 

A search warrant was executed at a Gering residence after information was received that Mr. Palomo may be at that residence, but he was not located. The whereabouts of Mr. Palomo are not known at this time.

The Morrill Police Department and Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident and were assisted by the Scottsbluff Police Department, Gering Police Department, Mitchell Police Department, Nebraska State Patrol, Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office Drone Team, Gering Fire Department, Regional West Medical Center Ambulance Service.

Anyone with information about Mr. Palomo’s whereabouts may contact the Scotts Bluff County Communications Center at 308-436-6666.

North Platte, Ne - The January Teacher of The Month from Eagle Media is <a href="https://www.npccknights.com/sports/sball/coaches/Janelle_Higgins">North Platte Community College Softball Coach Janelle Higgins</a>. The Teacher of the Month is sponsored by <a href="https://www.prairiefriendsandflowers.com/">Prairie Friends &amp; Flowers</a> in North Platte. According to Higgins' nomination, "Coach Higgins is the most selfless person I know! She serves on countless boards and committees for the community. She is a huge advocate for children of all ages. She is hardworking and will go to the end of the earth to help anyone that needs it. She is committed to her team and her program and instills values in her players and students. She never asks for anything so we would love to give her this honor."

Coach Janelle Higgins will begin her 13th season at North Platte Community College in 2022-23. Higgins came to North Platte in 2010 as the second head coach in program history.&nbsp;

Under her leadership, the Knights won Region IX Division II championships in 2012, 2015, 2017 and 2021 – the same years that she was named Region IX Division II Coach of the Year.&nbsp;

Higgins was also designated as the Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2017. She was Co-Coach of the Year in 2016 and is currently an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion region ambassador for the National Junior College Athletic Association.&nbsp;

Higgins’ teams won NCCAC championships in 2012 and 2017, were co-conference champions in 2016 and NCCAC runners-up in 2013 and 2015.&nbsp;

North Platte, Ne - The January Teacher of The Month from Eagle Media is <a href="https://www.npccknights.com/sports/sball/coaches/Janelle_Higgins">North Platte Community College Softball Coach Janelle Higgins</a>. LINCOLN — The Nebraska State Auditor’s Office on Wednesday accused the former director of an Ogallala senior center of improperly paying herself more than $11,000 upon leaving the job.

According to an audit of the Keith County Senior Center, Jeanine “Jeanie” Herman paid herself $2,380 twice for unused vacation leave upon her exit in March 2023.

In addition, Herman obtained checks of $7,480 for unused sick leave, even though the center didn’t pay for unused sick leave, and other checks for $1,360 for “Vacation Salary” and “Sick Salary” that also were not allowed. None of the payments was approved by the center’s board of directors, the auditor noted.

The Auditor’s Office, in a five-page letter to the senior center, said it was referring its findings to the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office and Keith County Attorney’s Office for possible criminal prosecution for theft.

Attempts to reach Herman, who served two years as the center’s director, were not immediately successful Wednesday.

The senior center did not provide an official response to the audit. But a spokesperson for the center said Wednesday that it was in the process of negotiating with Herman about the alleged overpayments.

State audit claims senior center manager in Ogallala overpaid herself

On Tuesday, 1-30-24, at 11:10 P.M. North Platte Police officers were investigating a felony Protection Order violation.&nbsp; The alleged offender was Jordan Bohman.&nbsp; Police officers located his vehicle leaving the Flying J Truck Stop.&nbsp; They attempted to stop Bohman, who was driving a 2019 Ford Fusion.&nbsp; Bohman refused to stop, and officer pursued him, west bound on I-80.&nbsp; They terminated the pursuit west of North Platte and put out a BOLO for the vehicle. &nbsp;

A deputy sheriff located the vehicle on I-80 near the Hershey interchange.&nbsp; He attempted to stop the vehicle and initiated a pursuit.&nbsp; Dispatch advised all officers that the driver had been talking to his mother on the phone and told her that he had a gun, and he was going to kill himself and law enforcement. &nbsp;The pursuit continued and the vehicle left I-80 at the Sutherland exit and continued through Sutherland to 831 North Walnut, Sutherland.&nbsp; It was later confirmed that he has been living at that address.&nbsp; 

Deputies and NSP troopers gave commands for Bohman to exit the vehicle, but he refused.&nbsp; After extensive negotiations with Bohman, officers approached the vehicle, broke the driver's window and removed Bohman from the vehicle.&nbsp; It was at this time that they noticed that Bohman had used a large boot knife to stab himself.&nbsp; Officers rendered aid until Sutherland Rescue arrived and transported Bohman to the hospital.&nbsp; 

Reports have been filed with the Lincoln County Attorney and an arrest warrant is expected.&nbsp; Bohman remains in the hospital at this time.&nbsp;

Pursuit leads to an arrest in Sutherland

LINCOLN — For a second time, state lawmakers debated Tuesday whether Nebraska needs to pursue adopting permanent daylight saving time or join two states that have year-round standard time.

The debate pits golfers and broadcasters, who support the added evening sunshine of DST, against health experts who argue that our biological clocks and sleep patterns work best on standard time.

Under Legislative Bill 143, Nebraska would forego the annual “fall-back and spring-forward” changes to daylight saving time and adopt it year round — but only if three bordering states also make the change and the U.S. Congress approves.

State Sen. Steve Erdman of Bayard has introduced an amendment requiring the state to adopt year-round standard time, like Arizona and Hawaii.

He cited research from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine indicating that the “abrupt” switching of clocks every spring and fall causes an increase in heart attacks, mood disorders and auto crashes.

But permanent daylight saving time is the worst option, healthwise, Erdman said, and health concerns trump added sunshine for recreation.

“Our biological clocks work best on standard time … because that’s what God created,” he said.

Lincoln Sen. Danielle Conrad assumed sponsorship of LB 143 after its previous sponsor, Sen. Tom Briese, resigned to become state treasurer. Her primary goal is to end the annual clock changes in spring and fall.

She added, however, that the golf industry and state broadcasters are concerned about switching to permanent standard time and making Nebraska “an outlier” with other states.

Nineteen states, including neighboring Colorado and Wyoming, have adopted proposals to switch to permanent daylight saving time, pending congressional approval.

Switching to permanent standard time, Erdman pointed out, does not require an OK from Congress, and such congressional approval for permanent daylight time is iffy.

Legislators adjourned debate for the day Tuesday before getting to a vote on Erdman’s amendment or LB 143. Debate could resume as early as Wednesday
