Sept. 22, 2023 (North Platte, Neb.) — Weather permitting, Southbound Jeffers Street traffic will be shifted from the right lane to the left lane, and Leota Street will be closed west of Jeffers Street beginning Monday Sept. 25, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.&nbsp;

The west leg of the Jeffers and Leota Street intersection will be closed for both eastbound and westbound traffic. Leota Street will be open between Dewey and Jeffers. Motorists are advised to utilize alternate routes during the closure. The intersection closure is expected to be in place for approximately two (2) weeks.&nbsp;

Paulsen, Inc. of Cozad is the contractor for this project. The intersection closure is for construction of new concrete pavement at the Leota Street intersection. The traffic shift is to allow for phase 2 of the project to commence.&nbsp;

The 2023 class of Mid-Plains Community College Licensed Practical Nursing students has achieved a 100 percent pass rate on the NCLEX-PN exams.&nbsp;

The class consists of the following graduates:&nbsp;

“I cannot be prouder of our nursing students,”&nbsp;said Dr. Kathy Harrison, MPCC director of nursing. “This is a major accomplishment for the students, our faculty and the college. The faculty have worked hard to get these students where they need to be, and the students put a lot of hours in studying to attain this achievement.”

The NCLEX exam tests the competency of nursing school graduates in the U.S. and Canada, according to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, which develops the exam.&nbsp;Its purpose is to determine if a graduate can safely begin practice as an entry level nurse.

The exam tests application and analysis using the knowledge grads learned in college and also tests their abilities to think critically and make informed decisions.

The LPN news follows on the heels of an announcement last month that the 2023 MPCC Associate Degree Nursing students also achieved the milestone.&nbsp;

It’s the first time in the college’s records that both ADN and LPN students from Mid-Plains have received a 100 percent pass rate in the same year.&nbsp;

“I am so incredibly proud of our LPN students for their hard work in achieving a 100 percent pass rate on their recent NCLEX exam,”&nbsp;said Dr. Jody Tomanek, vice president of Academic Affairs and NPCC. “The faculty have worked hard to educate our students to get them to this point, and I thank them for their hard work as well.”

Mid-Plains LPN students earn 100 percent NCLEX pass rate

The OVFD was paged for a structure fire in the city. Fire Officer in the vicinity reported smoke issuing from building vents and opening. Dispatch automatically upgraded to county wide page. (This procedure is collaborative and alerts KLFD, Paxton, Brule, KC EMS, LEO and KC EM all simultaneously now instead of how it was done prior)OVFD Apparatus - Command, Engine, Ladder, Rescue, BLS ambu

KC EM, OPD, KCSO, and NSP responded. LEOs closed Hwy 30 and diverted traffic for the incident. Electric and Gas Utilities were requested to assist. KC EM and Drone Pilot flew the FLIR drone, greatly increasing safety and efficiency for roof top operations. FF were able to gain control of a potentially catastrophic attic fire in about 20 minutes. Crews were on scene approximately 4 hrs overhauling and extinguishing hot spots. FF entered structure during suppression ops to place salvage covers and protect business computers, etc. EMS provided rehab for on scene personnel. (This process is essential as FF are rotated in and out of an incident. 

When they come out, vitals are checked, hydration is performed, and the personnel cools down, relaxes and if any anomaly or problems with any FF health is detected, EMS provides any intervention, including transport if necessary. If you drive by or observe FF sitting under an awning or in chairs adjacent to an incident, they are ”re habbing” This is how we keep our FF from becoming statistics or a Line of Duty Death. Cardiac issues/heart attack are a leading cause of FF deaths at incidents or immediately after and rehab is essential to help prevent this.)NESFM is investigating the incident. No civilian or FF injuries were reported to IC. Building not habitable at this time but not destroyed.&nbsp;&nbsp;

OVFD release statement on the fire call at Humphrey's Auto

OGALLALA, NEB. - Our week 5 Sandhills Area Game of the Week takes us to Alliance as this weeks matchup features the 2-2 Ogallala Indians taking on the 2-2 Alliance Bulldogs. Ogallala is heading into this contest riding a 2 game winning streak after they defeated Cozad in Week 3 28-26 than last week winning at home against Gering 38-28 last Friday.

Last week, Ogallala rushed for 294 yards and leading the way was the senior Caden Rezac. Rezac had 13 carries for 178 yards and 4 touchdowns. Air Force commit Harry Caskey had carried the rock 15 times for 95 yards and 1 touchdown. The Indians, who switched to a heavy rush offense has ran for 967 yards through 4 weeks, averaging 242 rushing yards a game. Caskey and Rezac both have a team high 418 rushing yards.

Alliance is led by first year head coach TD Stein, the former Chadron High Standout and two-time all state honorable mention. Stein would snap Alliance's 23 game losing streak in their week 2 matchup against Gordon-Rushville, where the Bulldogs won 24-20. Alliance would win the following week against Valentine before falling to Gothenburg last week 46-12.

Stein runs an air raid offense led by senior quarterback Landen Crowe. Through 4 games, Crowe has thrown for 990 yards, 10 touchdowns, and been picked off 8 times. Crowe's top weapon this season is senior wideout Tristen Timbers. Timbers has a team high 508 receiving yards and 29 catches and has found the end zone 5 times. Through 4 games, the Bulldogs have thrown for 996 yards.

Sandhills PostOGALLALA, NEB. - Our week 5 Sandhills Area Game of the Week takes us to Alliance as this weeks matchup features the 2-2 Ogallala Indians taking on the 2-2 Alliance Bulldogs. Ogallala is heading into this contest riding a 2 game winning streak after they defeated Cozad in Week 3 28-26 than last week winning at home against Gering 38-28 last Friday.Last week, Ogallala rushed for 294 yards and leading the way was the senior Caden Rezac. Rezac had 13 carries for 178 yards and 4 touchdowns. Air Force commit Harry Caskey had carried the rock 15 times for 95 yards and 1 touchdown. The Indians, who switched to a heavy rush offense has ran for 967 yards through 4 weeks, averaging 242 rushing yards a game. Caskey and Rezac both have a team high 418 rushing yards.Alliance is led by first year head coach TD Stein, the former Chadron High Standout and two-time all state honorable mention. Stein would snap Alliance's 23 game losing streak in their week 2 matchup against Gordon-Rushville, where the Bulldogs won 24-20. Alliance would win the following week against Valentine before falling to Gothenburg last week 46-12.Stein runs an air raid offense led by senior quarterback Landen Crowe. Through 4 games, Crowe has thrown for 990 yards, 10 touchdowns, and been picked off 8 times. Crowe's top weapon this season is senior wideout Tristen Timbers. Timbers has a team high 508 receiving yards and 29 catches and has found the end zone 5 times. Through 4 games, the Bulldogs have thrown for 996 yards.This week 5 Sandhills Area Game of the Week features a smashmouth run offense from Ogallala vs an air raid offense from Alliance. OVFD has fire under control at Humphrey's Auto

North Platte, Neb., Prairie Arts Center – October 1st– “A Day’s Work,” an exhibition of artworks related to labor from the collection of Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, opens September 30, 2023 at the Prairie arts Center in North Platte, NE, sponsored by Nebraskaland Bank. 

The exhibition is open free to the public Tuesday – Saturday from 11-4 pm. Presenting depictions of work by eighteen artists, the exhibition encourages viewers to consider labor’s mental, physical, social, political, and economic effects. Although the artworks in this exhibition vary in medium, year of completion, and message, together they illuminate an expanded understanding of what it means—and what it looks like—to labor. 

“A Day’s Work” includes photographs from well-known 20th-century advocates Lewis Hine and Dorothea Lange, who raised awareness about child and agricultural labor. Contemporary artists Christina Fernandez and Jay Lynn Gomez are represented by prints based on present issues of workers’ rights and visibility. The exhibition is part of Sheldon Statewide, an annual program through which works from the museum’s collection travel to venues throughout Nebraska. 

Since its inception in 1987, the program has taken exhibitions to 25 communities, reaching more than 365,000 people. “A Day’s Work” will be presented in Chadron, North Platte, McCook, Grand Island, York, Beatrice, Fremont, and Falls City during the 2023–24 academic year. This year’s exhibition labels and educational resources are bilingual in English and Spanish. Educators are also encouraged to contact Holly Carlini,&nbsp;<a href="mailto:holly@prairieartscenter.org" target="_blank">holly@prairieartscenter.org</a>or Saraphina Masters, assistant curator of engagement at Sheldon, for subject area–specific lesson plans and other educational resources.

“Who Gets Grandma’s Yellow Pie Plate?” will be led by Brandi Hilton-Hagemann, extension educator for Rural Prosperity Nebraska.

The program is designed for people of all ages seeking useful information about the inheritance of personal property of low monetary but high sentimental value. It will provide research-informed practical strategies to protect family relationships when passing on personal possessions.

Items such as pie plates, quilts, jewelry, photographs, books and documents of family significance are often overlooked during estate planning sessions because they are considered non-titled property, yet decisions about those items can become major challenges for family members.

Hilton-Hagemann will help participants set personal goals, decide what is fair for their family situation, discuss why belongings have different meaning for various family members, consider distribution options and consequences and practice conflict resolution tactics.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The class is scheduled for 5:30-8 p.m. at the MPCC Imperial Campus in Imperial.

Actor Luke Wilson stops by McPherson County Schools

The annual Blessing of the Animals will be held at Episcopal Church of Our Savior in North Platte on Sunday morning, October 1st.

Animals will be blessed during the 9:30 am service or people can bring their animals to the church parking lot to be blessed between 11:00 am and noon. The church is located at 203 West 4th Street.

The annual blessing is conducted in remembrance of St Francis of Assisi's love for all creatures.

"The blessing remind us that our love of our pets can teach us something about God's love for us", said the Rev. Steve Meysing, rector of Church of Our Savior.

In connection with the blessing, a pet food drive to benefit the North Platte Pet Food Pantry will be held. People can bring cans or sacks of food for pets to donate with them to the blessing. All food collected will be given to the Pet Food Pantry.

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) encourages residents to get their flu shots and COVID-19 booster shots to protect against respiratory illnesses this winter. Cases of COVID-19 were minimal in the health district over the summer, with an average of 2 cases per week. SWNPHD saw a small bump in case numbers at the end of summer and expects another wave of widespread infections during the fall and winter.

Influenza (flu) and COVID-19 are caused by viruses that are ever evolving and changing. This means that as our immune systems fight off infection, the viruses adapt to avoid being detected. When large numbers of people are infected at the same time as happens with flu and COVID, the viruses change more quickly. This is why researchers work to provide updated shots often, to better protect against the more recent strains of flu and COVID-19 that have been circulating.

Influenza (flu) is a potentially fatal, contagious respiratory illness caused by viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. Flu vaccines prevent and diminish the severity of flu-related illness, reducing the need for medical care and hospitalization.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Most people infected with the virus experience mild respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. However, some people become seriously ill and require medical attention. The COVID vaccines significantly reduce the risk of developing severe COVID-19 complications and hospitalization, protecting against avoidable severe illness or death.

Everyone ages 6 months and older are recommended to get the updated flu shots and Covid shots, which will be available at SWNPHD offices in McCook and Ogallala starting in October. For those who recently had a COVID shot, they can get the updated shot two months after their last dose. 

According to the CDC, it is safe and acceptable to receive COVID-19 vaccine and flu vaccine during the same appointment. These are separate shots and are not combined into one shot. Check with your healthcare provider if you have questions about getting multiple vaccinations at one time.

Flu Shots and COVID-19 Boosters

North Platte Community College’s jazz band has been invited to open for and play with the Glenn Miller Orchestra next month.

The performance will begin at 4 p.m. Oct. 8 at The Golden Husk, the historic theater located in downtown Ord.

“We are thrilled that the Jazzy Knights are providing preshow entertainment,” said Jennifer Winder, adjunct music instructor. “Most of all, we are grateful for the opportunity to perform with the iconic Glenn Miller Orchestra - a chance of a lifetime for any musician. This is sure to be an unforgettable performance for our Mid-Plains students.”&nbsp;

With its unique jazz sound, the Glenn Miller Orchestra is considered to be one of the greatest bands of all time.

It is the most popular and sought after big band in the world for both concert and swing dance engagements. The present Glenn Miller Orchestra was formed in 1956 and has been touring around the globe ever since.

The fact that NPCC students will be part of the Ord performance brings the orchestra full circle, as founder Glenn Miller got his musical start while in elementary school in North Platte in the early 1900s.

After his father brought home a mandolin one day, Miller promptly traded it for an old, battered horn, which he practiced every chance he got. The instrument would lead to a lifetime obsession with music for Miller, who would come to be known as the father of modern U.S. military bands.

His orchestra’s best-selling records include Miller’s theme song, “Moonlight Serenade,” and the first gold record ever made, “Chattanooga Choo Choo.”

In 1954, Miller was the subject of a partly fictionalized film biography, “The Glenn Miller Story,” starring James Stewart. Miller posthumously received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003.

During the concert in Ord, orchestra director Eric Stabnau and the 18-member ensemble will play many favorite original Miller arrangements as well as more modern selections performed in the Miller style and sound.

Along with the orchestra, vocalist Jenny Swoish, will perform individually and as part of The Moonlight Serenaders® vocal group.

The present Glenn Miller Orchestra was formed in 1956 and has been touring around the globe ever since.The fact that NPCC students will be part of the Ord performance brings the orchestra full circle, as founder Glenn Miller got his musical start while in elementary school in North Platte in the early 1900s.After his father brought home a mandolin one day, Miller promptly traded it for an old, battered horn, which he practiced every chance he got. The instrument would lead to a lifetime obsession with music for Miller, who would come to be known as the father of modern U.S. military bands.His orchestra’s best-selling records include Miller’s theme song, “Moonlight Serenade,” and the first gold record ever made, “Chattanooga Choo Choo.”In 1954, Miller was the subject of a partly fictionalized film biography, “The Glenn Miller Story,” starring James Stewart. The North Platte Young Professionals are proud to announce the 2023 Finalist in the Big Idea North Platte business pitch contest.&nbsp;There was a 31% increase of submissions this year which shows the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and growing in North Platte.

There are nine finalists for the Community Category: Brandon Thomas, Joshua Howell, Jessica Braithwait, Nathan Goebel, Brandon McCook, Jordan Maassen, Tayler Eller, Rodger Farr, and Mindee Mohr.

There are seven finalists for the Youth Category: Aashi Naidoo, Rose Green, Ava Welch, Logan Robirds, Landon Shepherd, Dany Zheng, and Mason Giebler.

Big Idea North Platte business pitch contest is taking place on Wednesday, October 18th at Venue 304, located at 304 East 5th Street, North Platte.

The Social for Big Idea North Platte begins at 5:00pm. The main event starts at 6:00pm when the top 9 finalists in the community category, the top seven in the youth category give a two-minute idea pitch and then go through a short question and answer session. From there, they will be narrowed down to the top five finalists. The judges will select the top 5 in the&nbsp;community category and top three for the youth category. Once the top finalists are announced, audience members will decide who takes home the first, second, and third place prizes. Contestants are encouraged to bring their friends, colleagues, and fans to secure their place. There is no admission fee to attend Big Idea North Platte. Food trucks and a cash bar will be available.

Prize money has been pledged by the Eagle Communication&nbsp;through the Schmidt Foundation for the Community Category.&nbsp;Winners will receive: first place - $10,000, second place - $7,000, and third place - 3,000.&nbsp; Scholarships for the Youth Category &nbsp;were made possible by Mid Plains Community College and will be awarded for those who win in the amount of: first place- $2,500, second place $1,500, and third place $1,000.&nbsp;&nbsp;Each 1st place winner will also receive marketing packages courtesy of Eagle Communications and The North Platte Telegraph.&nbsp; RA Production has also pledged marketing for the first place Community winner.

Post News Director Canon Rath chatted with councilman Ty Lucas about the September 19th North Platte City Council.&nbsp;&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - The September 19th North Platte City Council meeting has officially passed by. This week's city council meeting was a rather quick one as there was not a whole lot of agenda to discuss. The approval of fireworks for the North Platte Public Schools was granted, Ty Lucas also talks about user fees, another discussion was the housing problem in North Platte, and finally Lucas gave his perspective from the Union Pacific rail car that caught on fire last Thursday.&nbsp;

Heartland Exotic Bird and Animal Auction October 8th in North Platte

The North Platte Community College music department has received a grant that will make it easier for students to perform at community events.

The music department was awarded a&nbsp;$5,224 grant from the James and Betty Keenan Fund. The money was used to purchase 12 new iPads that the music students can load their sheet music onto for community performances.

The iPads will be especially useful during windy days and in venues with constricted spaces. They will also be used for Music Theory and other classes.

“We are touched by the generosity of the Keenan family – they see the value music has in the lives of our students,” said Kristin Simpson, music instructor. “We are excited to use the iPads. Not only are they practical, but they align perfectly with the forward-thinking we strive for within the NPCC music department.”

Simpson said she’s grateful to the NPCC administration and Grants Coordinator Kristin Borman for their support of the endeavor.

<a>“These iPads will benefit the education, growth and development of our students as musicians, which is the number one focus of our department,” said Simpson. “We are thrilled to be able to increase our technological capabilities.”</a>

Hershey Public Schools has completed Phases 2 &amp; 3a of the renovation project which began in the fall of 2022.&nbsp; The overarching goals of phase 2 &amp; 3 were to renovate the 1959 building and to increase instructional space in all elementary classrooms.&nbsp; This included converting the 1959 gym into a K-12 Library/Media Center and collaboration space, special education, and Guidance classrooms.

 A secure entrance into the building was also constructed in Phase 2 of the renovation project. This entrance was constructed at the South Bus Doors of the 1959 portion of the building.&nbsp; This entrance is utilized during business hours and all individuals are required to enter here to meet with a receptionist before entering the building during normal business hours.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hershey will be hosting an Open House for all stakeholders to come and see the updates to the facilities.&nbsp; The open house will be held in conjunction with the annual PK-6 Open House on Tuesday, September 26, 2023.&nbsp; We are excited to announce that Hershey State Bank &amp; Hershey Agency will once again sponsor the event.&nbsp; The event will include a short presentation by Dr. McConnell (in the east gym), Group led tour (throughout the elementary classrooms), and a meal (South parking lot) presented by Hershey State Bank and Hershey Agency!&nbsp; The public is invited to attend either tour and are welcome to participate in all events! Parents and students are encouraged to choose a session that fits your child's grade level!&nbsp;

**Please park in the south gravel lot OR west crushed rock lot.&nbsp; The south concrete lot will be closed for the refreshments to be provided by Hershey State Bank..&nbsp; Each session will start in the East Gym!&nbsp; Enter through the South HS Commons Door.&nbsp;

The set up for this year’s Open House will include 2 sessions: 4:30-5:30 PM &amp; 5:30-6:30 PM. Each session will follow the same setup, starting with a short presentation in the (#1)east gym, followed by a teacher/principal led group tour (#2), finishing the evening with a meal (#3) sponsored by Hershey State Bank and Hershey Agency.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

If possible, we encourage PK-2 parents to attend Session I with 3-6 parents attending the second session.&nbsp; Our goal is to have equal sized groups.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Remodeling is still underway in the 1959 North restrooms and four of the 1959 high school classrooms under Phase 3b.&nbsp; Phase 3b is anticipated to be completed at the beginning of second semester.&nbsp; Phase 4 of the renovation will occur in the spring and summer of 24.&nbsp; Phase 1, the new addition is scheduled to be completed during the second semester of this school year.&nbsp;

The entire project is roughly 55,000 square feet in renovation and 30,000 square feet in new construction.&nbsp;&nbsp; Electrical, plumbing, HVAC and fire suppression have been included in the project along with other site improvements.&nbsp;

 </figure>Hershey will be hosting an Open House for all stakeholders to come and see the updates to the facilities.&nbsp; The open house will be held in conjunction with the annual PK-6 Open House on Tuesday, September 26, 2023.&nbsp; We are excited to announce that Hershey State Bank &amp; Hershey Agency will once again sponsor the event.&nbsp; The event will include a short presentation by Dr. McConnell (in the east gym), Group led tour (throughout the elementary classrooms), and a meal (South parking lot) presented by Hershey State Bank and Hershey Agency!&nbsp; The public is invited to attend either tour and are welcome to participate in all events! Parents and students are encouraged to choose a session that fits your child's grade level!&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>**Please park in the south gravel lot OR west crushed rock lot.&nbsp; The south concrete lot will be closed for the refreshments to be provided by Hershey State Bank..&nbsp; Each session will start in the East Gym!&nbsp; Enter through the South HS Commons Door.&nbsp;The set up for this year’s Open House will include 2 sessions: 4:30-5:30 PM &amp; 5:30-6:30 PM. Each session will follow the same setup, starting with a short presentation in the (#1)east gym, followed by a teacher/principal led group tour (#2), finishing the evening with a meal (#3) sponsored by Hershey State Bank and Hershey Agency.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;If possible, we encourage PK-2 parents to attend Session I with 3-6 parents attending the second session.&nbsp; Our goal is to have equal sized groups.&nbsp;&nbsp;Session I&nbsp;4:30: Presentation by Dr. Luke McConnell (East Gym)&nbsp;5:00: Tour Elementary Building&nbsp;5:30: Hershey State Bank Meal (South Parking Lot)&nbsp;Session II&nbsp;&nbsp;5:00 Presentation by Dr. Luke McConnell (Easy Gym)&nbsp;5:30 Tour Elementary Building&nbsp;6:00: Hershey State Bank Meal (South Parking Lot)&nbsp;Remodeling is still underway in the 1959 North restrooms and four of the 1959 high school classrooms under Phase 3b.&nbsp; Phase 3b is anticipated to be completed at the beginning of second semester.&nbsp; Phase 4 of the renovation will occur in the spring and summer of 24.&nbsp; Phase 1, the new addition is scheduled to be completed during the second semester of this school year.&nbsp;The entire project is roughly 55,000 square feet in renovation and 30,000 square feet in new construction.&nbsp;&nbsp; Electrical, plumbing, HVAC and fire suppression have been included in the project along with other site improvements.&nbsp;
