North Platte Community College volleyball player&nbsp;<a href="https://npccknights.com/sports/wvball/2022-23/bios/ramsey_morgan_mgni">Morgan Ramsey</a>&nbsp;will move on to the College of Saint Mary in Omaha. Ramsey signed a letter of intent to play for the Flames during the 2023-24 season.&nbsp;

"I chose College of St. Mary because it is a school that has a great athletic program," said Ramsey. "They are always competing at a high level. They are also a school that allows athletes to be enrolled in their nursing program, which is very rare to be able to do both."&nbsp;

The 6-foot, 1-inch outside hitter from Bartlett was one of three Knights volleyball players to be named to the National Junior College Athletic Association All-Region IX Team last fall.&nbsp;

Ramsey finished the season first in the region with 3.44 kills per set and second in the region for total kills with 396.&nbsp;

She has been on the President's List at NPCC since arriving on campus, and her 4.0 GPA also landed her a spot on the NJCAA's 2021-22 All Academic First Team list. Additionally, her efforts in the classroom helped the Knights, as a whole, make the NJCAA's list for Volleyball Academic Team of the Year.&nbsp;

"I am really proud of Morgan and excited that she found a place to continue her volleyball career," said Alexa McCall, NPCC head volleyball coach. "Morgan has been a competitor since she stepped foot in our gym, and I know that she has qualities that are going to make her successful at CSM and in her life. She has grown so much in her time here and shown great leadership skills and hard work. I can't wait to see the things she accomplishes."&nbsp;

Ramsey said she has had a wonderful experience at NPCC. She will take those memories with her as she embarks on her new journey in the eastern end of the state.&nbsp;

"Here at NPCC, I have enjoyed how everyone goes above and beyond for you, both as a student and as an athlete," Ramsey said. "The academics are some of the best you will get, and the instructors are always there for help. For the athletic side, we have an awesome coaching staff that just wants you to succeed and be a good person both on and off the court. Our coaches strive to make us into respectful women. We also have a wonderful weights program and that makes all the difference when trying to improve physical skills. I can't say thank you enough to our athletic trainer and physical therapists who make sure I am taking care of my body and for keeping me on the court."&nbsp;

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Several thousand workers at CSX will soon get one of the things that pushed the U.S. railroad industry to the brink of a strike last fall: paid sick time.

CSX announced a deal Tuesday with two of its 12 unions, becoming the first major railroad to offer that benefit that most U.S. workers take for granted.

About 4,000 track-maintenance workers in the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division union and another 1,000 mechanical workers in the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen union will get four days of paid sick leave as part of the agreements. The workers will also be able to convert three of their personal leave days into sick-leave days.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-economy-government-and-politics-207229bcd558b6a6c1d58f3f85e2d804">Quality-of-life concerns</a>&nbsp;about the lack of paid sick time and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/government-and-politics-omaha-b78421c68440ad22587b3d1e5a126e26">demanding schedules</a>&nbsp;that keep many rail workers on call 24-7 dominated contract talks with all the major railroads last fall. More than half of all the roughly 115,000 rail workers involved voted to reject five-year contracts that included 24% raises and $5,000 in bonuses because of those concerns.

Ultimately, that contract was imposed on all the workers at CSX, BNSF, Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific and Kansas City Southern railroads after Congress and President Joe Biden&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-politics-pete-buttigieg-strikes-congress-c95510555dcd4cdc2d839e61d1195b06">stepped in</a>&nbsp;to block a strike because of concerns about the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-economy-strikes-climate-and-environment-government-politics-92ea7632a29f807ccc0e2658c50d731e">potential dire economic consequences</a>.

Tuesday's deal is especially welcome to rail workers who&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-economy-strikes-congress-d2ae4d3aecb27f176418518d977e69e1">remained frustrated</a>&nbsp;after the contract was imposed because the new contract didn’t resolve most of their quality-of-life issues. Many workers say their jobs became unbearable after more than one-third of all railroad jobs were eliminated over the last six years as the railroads&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-aab7d3084a8d17d8d721d2cb750be323">retooled their operations</a>.

“It’s a beautiful thing because that’s what we’re fighting for,” said Matt Weaver, a BMWED member based in Toledo, Ohio. “Things are moving in the right direction. We just have to keep the momentum going.”

CSX CEO Joe Hinrichs said the agreements show that the railroad “is committed to listening to our railroaders and working with their representatives to find solutions that improve their quality of life and experience as employees.”

But the head of the union representing engineers said the deal doesn't do enough to help railroad workers, especially for train crews.

“This agreement is a good start; however engineers are on call every day of the year and four paid sick days per year does not fulfill their needs," said Eddie Hall, the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-omaha-252a2c1830e2def19aaa83d5e6ea2e54">newly elected</a>&nbsp;president of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen. "Railroaders are essential workers, essential to keeping the supply chain moving, it’s essential that they be provided with adequate sick leave by all of the carriers.”

CSX, which is based in Jacksonville, Florida, and the other major freight railroads&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/government-and-politics-business-strikes-940da8fc519f8c526ca614e201d01216">refused</a>&nbsp;to offer paid sick time last fall because they said the unions had agreed over the decades to forego paid sick leave in favor of strong short-term disability benefits and higher pay. Railroad officials also said it was too late in the yearslong negotiations to work sick time into the deal.

“This paid sick leave agreement with CSX is certainly welcome but long overdue," said Greg Regan, president of the AFL-CIO's Transportation Trades Department labor coalition that includes all the major rail unions. "We look forward to other rail crafts reaching similar agreements with CSX and other railroads following suit.”

All the other freight railroads promised to negotiate further with the unions about finding ways to improve their quality of life. Tuesday's announcement is the first significant result of those talks.

There have been a couple other&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-business-strikes-df14983a4b7b7623bf68390587beef94">small encouraging signs</a>&nbsp;of progress this year, with CSX announcing that workers would no longer be penalized for missing work for medical appointments, and Union Pacific launching a small scheduling pilot that's giving a handful of engineers regularly scheduled days off.

BMWED spokesman Clark Ballew said the union expects the other major freight railroads to reach similar agreements on sick time, “otherwise, they look especially greedy now.” He said this agreement appears to be an effort by CSX to address the simmering concerns of its workers and sinking morale at the railroad.

🎧'Power of Self-Talk' workshop being offered for students in North Platte

CHADRON – Chadron State College and the Nebraska Council on Economic Education (NCEE) co-sponsored the sixth annual Best of the West Business Invitational Jan. 25. The event was the largest to date with 106 high school students from Alliance, Chadron, Hay Springs, Hemingford, Morrill, Omaha, Sidney, and Valentine participating.

CSC faculty members judged the job interview contest. Volunteers from the Nebraska Business Development Center and students from the Rural Business Leadership Initiative also assisted with the event.

NCEE Chadron Center administrator Dr. Gary Dusek said the invitational followed Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) competition guidelines to prepare the participants for the FBLA State Leadership Conference in Kearney, Nebraska, April 3-5.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol arrested a Wisconsin man following a pursuit that started in Dawson County on Interstate 80 Monday.

At approximately 9:30 a.m. Monday, a trooper observed an eastbound Honda Civic speeding on I-80 near Lexington, at mile marker 232. The trooper attempted a traffic stop, but the driver of the Honda accelerated and fled. The trooper initiated a pursuit.

The Honda reached speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour as it continued&nbsp;eastbound. The Honda also passed other vehicles on the shoulder multiple times. Near mile marker 261, the driver voluntarily brought the vehicle to a stop in the median. Troopers then took the driver into custody without further incident.

The driver, Marvin Adams, 44, of Appleton, Wisconsin, was arrested for willful reckless driving, flight to avoid arrest, and no operator’s license. He was lodged in Dawson County Jail.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-The North Platte Police Department announced several officers' promotions.

According to the department, over the past several months, several officers have gone through the promotional process&nbsp;with the command staff at the North Platte Police Department and the North Platte Civil Service Commission.

The department said the promotions arose due to the retirement of two longtime North Platte officers,&nbsp;Lt. Rich Thompson, and Lt. Rich Hoaglund.

The officers were sworn into their new ranks on Tuesday at the regular City Council meeting.

Governor Jim Pillen was joined by Coach Tom Osborne, state lawmakers, and representatives from mentoring programs across the state to declare February "Nebraska Mentoring Month" and unveil a new major mentoring initiative. Governor Pillen announced he has included an annual $5 million competitive grant program within his budget to encourage and facilitate mentorships within Nebraska schools.&nbsp;Program and application guidelines will be developed following funding approval. The intent, however, will be to provide grants to programs in Nebraska with established histories. &nbsp;

"We know the hope that mentoring gives to kids.&nbsp;There is nothing as rewarding as being a mentor to a young person," said&nbsp;Governor Pillen. "We are excited about the opportunity for the Legislature to pass a $5 million mentorship grant&nbsp;program to quickly&nbsp;expand mentoring across the state. This program would help lift our kids up from any set of circumstances."

In addition to the grant program, the state of Nebraska will be&nbsp;relaunching its program&nbsp;to allow&nbsp;state&nbsp;teammates to modify their work schedules,&nbsp;enabling them to volunteer&nbsp;as mentors each week.

Troopers receive a starting salary of $30 per hour ($62,400 annually) upon graduating from the NSP Training Academy. Troopers receive excellent benefits, including medical and life insurance, paid vacation, sick leave, and a great retirement program. Recruits are paid $22.49 per hour (with a wage increase pending) while attending the 22-week training program at the NSP Training Academy. Recruits also receive state benefits, including medical and life insurance during camp. Bilingual troopers are also eligible for a 2.5% pay increase upon graduation.

Nebraska State Patrol hiring troopers

News Release Mid-Plains Community College

Women are invited to attend a self-defense class March 22 at the Mid-Plains Community College Ogallala Campus.

The class, which is open to females ages 14 and older, is scheduled for 6-9 p.m. It will be taught by retired Nebraska State Patrol trooper Bill Redinger.

Redinger will share helpful hints to ensure safety, including how to be aware of surroundings. Instruction will include both a demonstration and active participation. Attendees will learn about the pressure points and striking areas to target on an assailant.

The cost of the class is $69 per person or $125 for mother/daughter duos.

Women’s self-defense to be taught in Ogallala

Mid-Plains Community College will celebrate Women’s History Month by inviting the public to listen to diversity advocate Denise TrimbleSmith at its campuses in McCook and North Platte.

TrimbleSmith will speak from 7:30-8:30 p.m. March 27 at the Student Union in McCook and from 7:30-8:30 p.m. March 28 in the McDonald-Belton Theater in North Platte. Both presentations are free to attend.

TrimbleSmith is the director of Justice Initiatives in the Office of Diversity and Inclusion for the University of Arizona as well as a certified life coach and motivational speaker.

She is also the founder of Courageous Conversations, through which she helps people navigate life’s challenges, define their visions, gain clarity, reduce worry and make actionable strides toward reaching their goals.

“Since childhood, I have always been able to recognize when others were in distress,” said TrimbleSmith. “I started Courageous Conversations to help people arrive at a conclusion through conversations, observations and reasoning that shows their firmness of purpose through Courage.”

During the presentations, TrimbleSmith will provide a motivational opportunity for women to tap into their power from within. The discussion will explore how courage is necessary to shift an atmosphere.

She will also touch on the contributions of women past and present by visiting the courageous narratives that helped shaped society, will discuss progress that has been made so far and will talk about what the future could hold.

TrimbleSmith’s presentations are made possible by MPCC’s Student Life departments.

Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen announced he appointed&nbsp;Jim Scheer as the District 3 Regent on the University of Nebraska Board of Regents.&nbsp;

"Jim is a public servant who will work to grow the University of Nebraska," said&nbsp;Governor Pillen. "He believes in educational excellence, the importance of agriculture, and fiscal conservative leadership."

Scheer represented District 19 in the Nebraska Legislature from 2013 to 2021. He was elected Speaker of the Legislature in 2017. Previously, he served on the Norfolk school board and as the mayor of Norfolk. Between 2004 and 2008, he was on the Nebraska State Board of Education and served as the board president in 2011 and 2012. He is a small business owner, who runs an insurance agency and an auto-parts store. Scheer earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Powerball jackpot grew to an estimated $747 million after no one beat the odds and won the top prize in Saturday night's drawing.

The numbers drawn were: 2, 8, 15, 19, 58 and Powerball 10.

The $747 million Powerball jackpot up for grabs Monday night is the ninth largest in U.S. lottery history and the latest in a string of huge lottery prizes. Someone in Maine won a $1.35 billion Mega Millions prize less than three weeks ago and a California player won a record $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot last November.

The jackpots grow so large because the tough odds offer just a miniscule chance of matching all six numbers and winning the top prize. That enables the jackpots like Saturday night's $700 million top prize to roll over and increase for months.

The last time someone overcame the odds of one in 292.2 million and won the Powerball jackpot was Nov. 19, 2022.

The $747 million estimate is for a winner who is paid through an annuity over 29 years. Winners usually opt for cash, which for Monday night's drawing would be $403.1 million.

Powerball is played in 45 states, as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

AP -&nbsp;U.S. agriculture officials on Friday proposed new nutrition standards for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/school-lunch-menu-farm-table-c8578122bf8d40351cc4eb99c94d9dbb">school meals</a>, including the first limits on added sugars, with a focus on sweetened foods such as cereals, yogurt, flavored milk and breakfast pastries.

The plan announced by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack also seeks to significantly decrease sodium in the meals served to the nation’s schoolkids by 2029, while making the rules for foods made with whole grains more flexible.

The goal is to improve nutrition and align with U.S. dietary guidelines in the program that serves breakfast to more than 15 million children and lunch to nearly 30 million children every day, Vilsack said.

“School meals happen to be the meals with the highest nutritional value of any meal that children can get outside the home,” Vilsack said in an interview.

The first limits on added sugars would be required in the 2025-2026 school year, starting with high-sugar foods such as sweetened cereals, yogurts and flavored milks.

Under the plan, for instance, an 8-ounce container of chocolate milk could contain no more than 10 grams of sugar. Some popular flavored milks now contain twice that amount. The plan also limits sugary grain desserts, such as muffins or doughnuts, to no more than twice a week at breakfast.

By the fall of 2027, added sugars in school meals would be limited to less than 10% of the total calories per week for breakfasts and lunches.

The proposal also would reduce sodium in school meals by 30% by the fall of 2029. They would gradually be reduced to align with federal guidelines, which recommend Americans aged 14 and older limit sodium to about 2,300 milligrams a day, with less for younger children.

Levels would drop, for instance, from an average of about 1,280 milligrams of sodium allowed now per lunch for kids in grades 9 to 12 to about 935 milligrams. For comparison, a typical turkey sandwich with mustard and cheese might contain 1,500 milligrams of sodium.

Health experts say cutting back on sugar and salt can help decrease the risk of disease in kids, including obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and other problems that often continue into adulthood.

The plan, detailed in a 280-page document, drew mixed reactions. Katie Wilson, executive director of the Urban School Food Alliance, said the changes are “necessary to help America’s children lead healthier lives.”

But Diane Pratt-Heavner, spokeswoman for the School Nutrition Association, a trade group, said school meals are already healthier than they were a decade ago and that increased regulations are a burden, especially for small and rural school districts.

“School meal programs are at a breaking point,” she said. “These programs are simply not equipped to meet additional rules.”

Vilsack emphasized that the plan phases changes in over the next six years to allow schools and food manufacturers time to adjust to the new standards.

“Our hope is that many school districts and food providers accelerate the timeline on their own,” he said.

Courtney Gaines, president of the Sugar Association, said the proposal ignores the “many functional roles” sugar plays in food beyond sweetness and encourages the use of sugar substitutes, which have not been fully studied in children. Sugar substitutes are allowed under the new standards, Vilsack said.

As part of the plan, agriculture officials are seeking feedback about a proposal that would continue to require that 80% of all grains offered in a week must be whole grains. But it would allow schools to serve non-whole grain foods, such as white-flour tortillas, one day a week to vary their menus.

Another option suggests serving unflavored nonfat and lowfat milk to the youngest children and reserving chocolate and other flavored milks for high school kids.

A 60-day public comment period on the plan opens Feb. 7.
