The University of Nebraska Medical Center has announced its fall 2022 dean’s list for students enrolled in nursing, dentistry, pharmacy and the allied health professions.&nbsp;&nbsp;


To qualify for the dean’s list, nursing and the allied health students must be enrolled for 12 or more hours during the semester and have a grade point
 average of 3.75 or above. To qualify for the pharmacy dean’s list, students must place in the top 20 percent of their class and maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or above. Dental students must be in the top 10 percent of their class for the semester.&nbsp;

Area students named to Dean's List at Univ. of Neb. Medical Center

TECUMSEH, Neb.-Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested an employee of the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) following an investigation into a reported sexual assault of a co-worker.

The investigation began when State Patrol investigators received a report from NDCS. The reported assault had occurred at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution in October 2022.

Monday, investigators arrested James Cherry, 33, at his home in Humboldt for first-degree sexual assault and third-degree sexual assault. Cherry has been lodged in Johnson County Jail.

Guests learn about job openings and careers at North Platte Community College’s annual Job Fest Tuesday in NPCC’s McDonald-Belton Gymnasium. A total of 55 businesses from throughout Nebraska and surrounding states participated this year.

Recruiters from the U.S. Army, Army Reserve and Marines were on site as were representatives from the transportation, construction, irrigation, conservation, correctional services, health care, childcare and retail sectors.

The Farm &amp; Ranch Expo will be open Wednesday, February 1st from 9am-6pm CST, and Thursday, February 2nd&nbsp;from 9am-4pm CST. Rope cutting ceremony will take place on Wednesday, February 1st&nbsp;at 9:30am. The event is FREE admission.

32nd Annual Buffalo Bill Farm and Ranch Expo returns to D&N Event Center

Lincoln – The Powerball jackpot has been growing since November without a winner. Because of the high jackpot, the Nebraska Lottery reminds customers to play responsibly.

The Powerball jackpot starts at $20 million and continues to grow each drawing until it is won. There have been 30 consecutive Powerball drawings since November 21, 2022, without a jackpot winner. This jackpot run has produced three big Powerball winners in Nebraska.

The largest Powerball jackpot on record occurred in November 2022 when one winner in California won a $2.04 billion jackpot.

Ten jackpots ranging from $2.5 million to $365 million have been won in Nebraska since the Nebraska Lottery began offering Powerball in July of 1994. The largest Powerball jackpot won in Nebraska occurred in February 2006 when a group of eight coworkers at the ConAgra Foods ham and corned beef plant in Lincoln split a $365 million jackpot.

Powerball jackpot 9th largest ever

GOODLAND — A Goodland man has been sentenced to more than eight years in prison for his conviction in the death of a child in 2020, Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach said Monday in a news release.

Steven E. Johnson, 28, Goodland, was sentenced in Sherman County District Court by Judge Scott Showalter to 61 months in a Kansas Department of Corrections facility on one count of involuntary manslaughter and 43 months for one count of child abuse. Johnson pleaded no contest to the charges in December 2021.

The case stems from the death of a 3-month-old child on May 13, 2020. The case was investigated by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Goodland Police Department.

The case was prosecuted by Senior Assistant Attorney General Jessica Domme of Kobach’s office.

LAVEEN VILLAGE, Ariz. (AP) — During seventh grade at Phoenix Indian School, Pershlie Ami signed up to go on what the school called an “outing” — promoted as opportunities for Native American students to earn spending money off campus.

They were opportunities — for cheap labor.

Ami said most people have no idea that the school staff would send students out to work, often doing menial tasks, for strangers whose backgrounds weren't checked.

“A family came and picked me up and took me to their home. The task that they wanted me to do was pick up dog poop in their house,” Ami said during a listening session Friday in the Gila River Indian Community just south of Phoenix overseen by&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/debra-haaland">U.S. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland</a>.

The session is part of a yearlong “Road to Healing” tour for victims and survivors of abuse at government-backed boarding schools. It is the fourth stop for the nation’s first and only Native American Cabinet secretary after previous stops in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/religion-native-americans-south-dakota-762797ee44f94d06e2f7776599bef374">South Dakota</a>, Oklahoma and Michigan.

Ami, who’s Hopi, is now 67 and living in nearby Laveen. She still remembers vehemently refusing to clean the house — and the fallout.

“I got severely punished for not doing what that family had asked me to do. I was never allowed to go out on another outing," she said. "Then I started to wonder what happened to some of these kids that went out on these outings, that nobody ever followed up on them.”

Ami was one of several people who spoke during Haaland’s visit to Arizona before a large audience that included Gov. Katie Hobbs and Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego.

Several testimonies addressed issues in addition to abuse, such as losing one's culture and language. The session took place in the multipurpose room of Gila Crossing Community School, where artwork and banners reflected the heritage of the local tribe.

“This is one step among many that we will take to strengthen and rebuild the bonds with the Native communities that federal Indian boarding school policies set out to break,” Haaland said before the session.

Starting with the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/education-native-americans-cultures-congress-8e9dff912a6eb23d2e25d03a58fd314b">Indian Civilization Act of 1819</a>, the U.S. enacted laws and policies to establish and support the schools. The stated goal was to “civilize” Native Americans, Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians, which was often carried out through abusive practices.

In Arizona alone, there were 47 federal Indian boarding schools — and that number does not even include the religious and private institutions that received federal funding to run schools.

“My ancestors and many of yours endured the horrors of the Indian boarding school assimilation policies carried out by the same department I now lead,” Haaland said. “This is the first time in history that a United States Cabinet secretary comes to the table with a shared trauma. That is not lost on me.”

Haaland has prioritized publicly examining the trauma caused by these schools. In May, the Interior Department released a first-of-its-kind report pointing out 408 schools the federal government supported that stripped Native Americans of their cultures and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/politics-wisconsin-us-department-of-the-interior-tennessee-texas-4bb30826b17c4426479f3a9082212fda">identities.</a>&nbsp;At least 500 children are known to have died at some of the schools. But when more research is done, that statistic is likely to rise.

A majority of the speakers were descendants of boarding school survivors. They shared how their parents had a hard time learning how to be good parents because they were separated from their own — some at a very young age. Ami, whose father also went to a boarding school, remembered how he would refer to himself as “just a dumb Indian.”

“I think he did eventually get rid of that image of being ‘a dumb Indian,’” Ami said. "But he never stopped using that phrase in reference to himself.”

The vulnerability of victims has spurred tears at all of these sessions. However, Deborah Parker, chief executive of the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition and a member of the Tulalip Tribes, said there's a feeling of hope, too.

“There's a sense of encouragement. Yes, we can finally tell our stories and maybe we can begin to heal,” Parker said. “Those tears help cleanse emotions that we've been keeping inside of us for sometimes generations.”

Congress is planning to reintroduce legislation to establish a boarding school “truth and healing commission,” according to Parker. It would be similar to one established in Canada in 2008. If passed, it would have a broader scope than the Interior Department’s investigation into federally run boarding schools and subpoena power.

Meanwhile, a second report is pending in the school investigation launched by Haaland, who is a member of Laguna Pueblo in New Mexico. It will focus on burial sites, the schools’ impact on Indigenous communities and also try to account for federal funds spent on the troubled program.

LINCOLN, Neb.-Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen announced the appointment of Scott Cordes as the Nebraska State Fire Marshal. Cordes will replace Shane Hunter, who stepped down due to personal health issues.&nbsp;

"Scott will work hard&nbsp;to&nbsp;cut regulatory burdens on our volunteer fire departments and paramedics," said&nbsp;Governor Pillen.&nbsp;"He understands we need to help volunteers so they can continue to protect their communities without red tape and unnecessary interference from the state."

Cordes is currently the administrative department head overseeing all public safety activities for Norfolk including police, fire and Region 11 Emergency Management. Previously, he served the Norfolk Fire Division for 25 years in various capacities including, city fire marshal, assistant fire chief and fire chief. Cordes also worked for the State Fire Marshal's office as a flammable liquids division inspector and as deputy state fire marshal. He has an Associate’s Degree in Fire Protection Technology from Southeast Community College, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business and a Master of Science Degree in Leadership from Bellevue University.

The project is currently in the
design phase of the planning process. Once the design and estimate
is finished, the project
will then go before the hospital board of
directors to approve the
budget and construction timeline. Once approved by the board, construction
would take an estimated two years.

As part of this initial
phase, demolition of the existing
building, the former Motel 6, is set for mid-February.

In the meantime, Great Plains
Health is pleased to partner with first-responders, including the North Platte
Police Department and North Platte
Fire Department, to allow
emergency training and drills within the building to enhance response.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska lawmaker is taking another shot at trying to pass a bill that would not only allow people to carry concealed handguns without a permit, it would prohibit the state's cities and counties from issuing local laws to do so within their borders.

Sen. Tom Brewer, of Gordon, defended the bill in a hearing before the Legislature's Judiciary Committee on Tuesday that drew more than 100 people both for and against it. Brewer brought with him a state attorney general's opinion that determined such a law would need to be implemented statewide.

"You can either follow the Constitution, or you can have carve-outs. But you can't do both," said Brewer, a combat veteran who was shot several times during a firefight with the Taliban in 2003. Given his harried combat experience, he said, "I understand the significance of what I'm asking for here."

Brewer has introduced the measure every year since 2017. This year, his proposal has 25 cosponsors and is again listed as his priority bill, increasing the odds that lawmakers will debate it on the Senate floor.

According to the U.S. Concealed Carry Association, permit-less concealed carry is already allowed in 25 conservative-leaning states, including Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, South Dakota and Wyoming — five of the six states that border Nebraska.

Nebraska already allows gun owners to carry firearms in public view, as long as they don't have a criminal record that bars them from possessing one and aren't in a place where guns are prohibited. To legally conceal the gun, Nebraskans are required to submit to a Nebraska State Patrol background check, get fingerprinted and take a gun safety course at their own expense.

The bill is championed by gun rights advocates who call it "constitutional carry," in reference to the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. Opponents argue that allowing people to carry handguns without registering with law enforcement is a threat to public safety.

More than a dozen people testified in favor of the bill, and the group included some unexpected backers, such as attorney Spike Eickholt, who represented the Nebraska Criminal Defense Association. That group, Eickholt said, finds those in the state's largest cities of Omaha and Lincoln — particularly minority populations — are disproportionately targeted by police over concealed carry laws. Others also testified that the $100 cost of a conceal carry permit that must be renewed every five years discriminates against poor residents.

Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer was among those who testified against the bill, noting that the city's gang violence and its population of about 500,000 would make permit-less concealed carry a dangerous proposition in the city.

"I completely understand why they don't need it in small towns. In Omaha, we have that need," Schmaderer said. "It plays a role in how we address violent crime."

Brewer's attempt to pass a nearly identical bill last year won initial approval but stalled on the second of three required votes in the waning days of the legislative session over objections to the proposal's elimination of mandatory training to obtain a concealed-carry permit. Brewer declined to include the required training feature again this year, saying Tuesday that while he believes in the importance of gun safety training, "it should not be mandatory."

Last year, Brewer's bill fell two votes short of the 33-vote supermajority needed to overcome a filibuster. The one-chamber Legislature is officially nonpartisan, but 17 of the state's 49 lawmakers this year are registered Democrats. If all of them oppose the measure, it would leave bill supporters at least one vote short of being filibuster-proof.

Such gun bills have triggered disconcerting reactions in the State Capitol before. In 2020, some gun-rights activists protesting a measure that would have imposed new restrictions on gun ownerships showed up carrying loaded semi-automatic rifles, which they are legally allowed to carry inside the Capitol.

Omaha Sen. Machaela Cavanaugh, who described being in a hearing room with armed people as "terrifying," has introduced a bill to prohibit possession of deadly weapons in the State Capitol or on State Capitol grounds. That bill has been referred to the Judiciary Committee, but it had not been assigned a hearing as of Thursday.

second “Name a Snowplow” contest! With almost 700 submissions by elementary school
students from throughout the state, the list was narrowed down to 16 winners, two from each of NDOT’s eight highway
districts.

of Communications and Public Policy,
the creativity of students’ submissions was impressive once again, making it difficult to narrow down the list. Some of the winning names included Super
Scooper, Plowabunga, Snow Big Deal, and Snowbi-Wan Kenobi.

“We received
entries from all corners of the state, including Crawford, Sidney, Falls City,
and Pender,” Ankeny said. “Not only is it
a chance for students to get
involved, but it is also a great way to recognize our
hardworking snowplow drivers and maintenance workers who are often the unsung
heroes in keeping our roads safe during and after winter weather.”

The selected
plows will be branded with their new monikers and will be updated on NDOT’s <a href="https://plows.nebraska.gov/">plows.nebraska.gov</a> and on <a href="https://new.511.nebraska.gov/">511.nebraska.gov</a> where
the name and location of each plow will be available in real time. While NDOT
has over 600 snowplows, these 16 winners will be added to the 17 winners from the inaugural
“Name a Snowplow” contest and will be the only ones identified by name for now.

Lincoln County’s Most Wanted 

LEXINGTON, Neb.-Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested a Cozad woman following a pursuit on Interstate 80 Wednesday night in central Nebraska.

At approximately 10:30 p.m., a trooper attempted a traffic stop on a Hyundai Elantra, which was believed to be driven by a subject with multiple felony warrants. The trooper attempted the traffic stop near Overton at mile marker 247 on Interstate 80. The driver of the Hyundai refused to yield and accelerated to speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour.

The trooper initiated a pursuit. As the vehicle reached mile marker 238, additional troopers successfully deployed stop sticks to slow the vehicle. A trooper performed a tactical vehicle intervention on the entrance ramp to bring the vehicle to a stop.

The driver refused to exit the vehicle for several minutes. Troopers deployed pepperball into the vehicle at which time the driver exited. The driver, Mikayla Schooley, 25, of Cozad, was then taken into custody. She was lodged in Dawson County Jail for flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, resisting arrest, obstructing a peace officer, possession of cocaine, and outstanding warrants.

 </figure>By NEBRASKA STATE PATROLLEXINGTON, Neb.-Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested a Cozad woman following a pursuit on Interstate 80 Wednesday night in central Nebraska.At approximately 10:30 p.m., a trooper attempted a traffic stop on a Hyundai Elantra, which was believed to be driven by a subject with multiple felony warrants. The trooper attempted the traffic stop near Overton at mile marker 247 on Interstate 80. The driver of the Hyundai refused to yield and accelerated to speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour.The trooper initiated a pursuit. As the vehicle reached mile marker 238, additional troopers successfully deployed stop sticks to slow the vehicle. The focus of the program is preparing students to work with the dentist at chairside during examination and treatment of patients.

January Teacher of The Month goes to College Dental Instructor

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Three new members were sworn onto the Mid-Plains Community College Board of Governors Wednesday evening.

Kim Korgan, of McCook; Tyler Pribbeno, of Imperial, and&nbsp;Tricia Schaffer, of North Platte, all ran unopposed in the November General Election.

They join eight other members on the board. Among other things, they will be responsible for leading the college through policy creation and initiation and through articulation and evaluation of the college’s scope, mission, values and legislated priorities.

Korgan replaces Alexis Davidson, of McCook, in representing District 1.

Korgan has lived in McCook since 1988 with her husband, Randy, who is a vice president at MNB Bank. The couple has two children.&nbsp;

Kim recently retired after 28-plus years with McCook Public Schools where she worked as registrar, Nebraska Department of Education data steward and student information administrator. She currently works from home for a partner of Infinite Campus.&nbsp;

Her passion for education is what prompted her to run for the MPCC Board of Governors.

“Education is something I am passionate about,” Kim said. “I have always thought that someday I would do something like this when I was closer to retirement to give back. I believe that Mid-Plains Community College is a huge part of McCook and feel it is important to support the growth here.”

She’s looking forward to making connections with other board members as well as across the state in her new role.

“I believe it is important to help each other in moving forward to offer great educational programs for students of Southwest Nebraska,” Kim said. “Great strides have been taken to offer classes that are shorter and teach skills that make students more employable. I would like more of those as well as more degree type offerings.”

Kim has stayed involved with her community by serving on the TeamMates Mentoring board, the McCook Education Foundation, the McCook Rotary Club and board and through several other boards within her church.

Pribbeno takes over the District 2 seat for Pam Abbott, of Ogallala.

Pribbeno was born and raised in Imperial. He graduated from Chase County High School in 2003 then earned a bachelor’s degree in legal studies from Chadron State College followed by a law degree from the University of Nebraska College of Law.

He returned to Imperial in 2010 and joined Joel Burke at Burke Law Office as an associate then as a partner. Pribbeno currently works as the community development director for the City of Imperial while also practicing law on the side.

He has been a member of the fund advisory committee for the Imperial Community Foundation Fund since 2011, serving as chair for the past three years.

Additionally, Pribbeno has served on the People Attraction committee for the Nebraska Community Foundation for the past two years and was part of the West Central Nebraska Development District board of directors.

“Building community is one of my real passions and is something I get to do for work but also something I love to ponder off the clock,” Pribbeno said. “I work closely and communicate frequently with many people in the Imperial area and my district, across all industries and backgrounds, and feel like I can lend my voice to their wants, needs and desires and represent their best interests on the MPCC Board of Governors.”

Pribbeno said he’s looking forward to using his time on the Mid-Plains board to encourage young community members to invest in themselves by pursuing higher education and to strongly consider doing that in the most affordable means available – such as through dual credit classes and the pursuit of a degree, diploma or certificate through community college.

“Great education doesn’t have to and shouldn’t cost a fortune,” said Pribbeno. “I believe we have the best chance of keeping our youth if we provide them the education and skills they are looking for and show them there is a wealth of opportunities for their personal and professional growth and the pursuit of happiness right here in their own backyard.”

The growing presence of and partnerships with MPCC are a large part of why he’s excited about the future of Southwest Nebraska.

She and her husband Dewey have four children and eight grandchildren.“Although we had never been in the livestock auction business, we had been on the other side of the table as livestock producers in a ranching operation,” Tricia said. “A turn of events left us needing to find something else and an advertisement about the livestock market being sold at a bank auction got our attention. With good help and community support, we operated the livestock market for five years. We brought our bull leasing business with us when we moved to North Platte and continue to provide that service to livestock producers.”Tricia chose to run for the MPCC Board of Governors because she sees the college as an asset, and she wants that to continue.“My goal is that the college will continue to grow and offer opportunities for the area that it serves,” Tricia said. “All of my children, at some point in their postsecondary schooling, attended a community college prior to finishing their degrees. Those institutions can make an education affordable. I remind students that an education is something that cannot be taken away.”Tricia is no stranger to giving back to her community and state. She served as the national director for the Nebraska High School Rodeo Association, an affiliation of the National High School Rodeo Association, for 26 years.She has also been a member of the National High School Rodeo Foundation, the Miss Rodeo Nebraska Association and the North Platte Pickleball Association.Tricia sings with the Heartland Chorus, for which she served as president and member of the organization’s board of directors. She also volunteers at Great Plains Health and serves as president of the GPH Volunteer Auxiliary.
