SUTHERLAND, Neb.-The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office has made numerous arrests as part of an investigation into theft from a Sutherland convenience store.

Authorities said on May 9, deputies received a report of a possible employee theft from Ozzie's I-80 Convenience Store, located at Interstate 80 and Highway 25.

The owner of the property told deputies the business had closed early on May 7 without his knowledge. He was told the employee, Cassandra Simmons, 34, of Sutherland, was sick.

Authorities said an internal investigation by the owner revealed that the bank deposit was several thousand dollars short for the week.

The Sheriff's Office said deputies continued to investigate and determined that several subjects had been in the store after it was closed on May 7. They were identified as Michael Stroble, 29, and Elisha Horn, 41, also of North Platte.

On May 11, deputies located Simmons, Stroble, and Horn and placed them under arrest on suspicion of felony theft by taking. Horn was also charged with possession of methamphetamine.

An additional subject Megan Hubbard, 31, of Wallace was also arrested on suspicion of felony theft by taking.

All were jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

Authorities said more arrests and additional charges are likely as the investigation continues.&nbsp;

connecting Rendezvous Square and North Spruce Street in downtown Ogallala.
Several other revitalization efforts in the alley will create a pocket park with ﬂowers, rain barrels, benches,
and hanging lights. The theme for the mural is “Mural
Wanted: Not Your Ordinary Town.”

This project stems from the “First Impressions” priorities
identiﬁed during the 2020 Keith County Community Vision Planning process.
It is being pursued thanks
to generous funding raised
during the 2021 Keith County
Big Give and a grant
from the Keith County Foundation Fund.

Help document rare butterflies across Nebraska by getting trained to monitor for regal fritillaries and monarchs at one of three upcoming events.

First-year RN and LPN nursing students at Mid-Plains Community College gather around cases of water and Gatorade they collected during their Hydrate Our Heroes campaign.

The drive was organized by MPCC’s chapters of the Nebraska State Student Nurses Association and the Licensed Practical Nurse Association of Nebraska to replenish depleted supplies at area fire departments.

Approximately 1,150 cases of water and Gatorade were collected along with several hundred dollars to purchase more.

The donations were distributed to the North Platte Fire Department and 12 surrounding volunteer fire departments.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-North Platte Community College’s welding program is helping a father and son build a future together while making memories along the way.

Chris and Sean Hurley are from North Platte. Sean is taking welding classes as a traditional student, and his father, Chris, is studying alongside him following a career change.

Chris spent almost 20 years as an engineer for Union Pacific Railroad but has been on disability since 2017.

Sean graduated from North Platte High School in 2020 then took a gap year before continuing on to college.

“After that, we both knew we needed to do something,” Chris said. “Each of us had an interest in welding, and we had tossed around the idea of starting our own business. Everything is just kind of falling into place.”

Both men took welding classes in high school and have welded on various projects on their family farm. They own a shop and most of the equipment needed to begin a welding business but knew they would need more training if they wanted to go that route.

“The college was right here in town, so we decided just to go for it,” Chris said.

“It’s been fun,” Chris said. “We’ve had the opportunity to spend more quality time together than we would have if Sean had gone to college somewhere else.”

“It was a little interesting going in,” Sean said. “I wasn’t sure what it would be like taking classes with my dad, but I’ve really enjoyed it. We usually have booths right next to each other. We check in with each other and have someone to bounce ideas off of.”

The college experience is a first for both of them, which makes their built-in support system even more special.

“I was set up to go into a trade right out of high school, but I didn’t,” Chris said. “Instead, I went directly into the workforce and did a little bit of everything. I worked in appliance repair, ceramic tile installation, at a parts department for an auto dealership – even built battery chargers for a manufacturing plant before I hired on with the railroad.”

Because welding has always been a fascination of his, he’s enjoying being able to make up for lost time.

The certifications the Hurleys are pursuing will make them more employable in the long run and will assist them if they do start their own shop, take on fabrication projects or conduct structural work.

“We’ve had the opportunity to refine our skills at the college and do it on more and better equipment than we would have otherwise had access to,” Chris said. “We’ve learned a lot about processes and what’s happening at the molecular level so we can better understand what’s going on when we’re actually welding. The program is good about showing you areas you need to work on. It has been a beneficial learning experience without a doubt.”

Sean has also appreciated the quality of education NPCC has provided him as well as the affordability.

“I’ve been able to live at home, and we each got Pell grants and scholarships, which means our student loans are minimal,” Sean said. “At the same time, I feel like we’re getting a good education. I’ve learned about more obscure processes than I would have by pursuing welding on my own. I’ve enjoyed that and the one-on-one instruction. This is a really nice program.”

The men agreed they have learned a lot just from working beside each other, keeping one another accountable and pushing each other to be better.

“We get along well,” Chris said. “When one of us is having trouble – the other one is the first person we go to. If there’s a question – we work on it jointly. We really are our own little team in class. This experience has definitely brought us closer together.”

 </figure>By HEATHER JOHNSON North Platte Community CollegeNORTH PLATTE, Neb.-North Platte Community College’s welding program is helping a father and son build a future together while making memories along the way.Chris and Sean Hurley are from North Platte. Sean is taking welding classes as a traditional student, and his father, Chris, is studying alongside him following a career change.Chris spent almost 20 years as an engineer for Union Pacific Railroad but has been on disability since 2017.Sean graduated from North Platte High School in 2020 then took a gap year before continuing on to college.“After that, we both knew we needed to do something,” Chris said. “Each of us had an interest in welding, and we had tossed around the idea of starting our own business. Everything is just kind of falling into place.”Both men took welding classes in high school and have welded on various projects on their family farm. They own a shop and most of the equipment needed to begin a welding business but knew they would need more training if they wanted to go that route.“The college was right here in town, so we decided just to go for it,” Chris said.They’re glad they did.“It’s been fun,” Chris said. “We’ve had the opportunity to spend more quality time together than we would have if Sean had gone to college somewhere else.”Sean agreed.“It was a little interesting going in,” Sean said. “I wasn’t sure what it would be like taking classes with my dad, but I’ve really enjoyed it. We usually have booths right next to each other. We check in with each other and have someone to bounce ideas off of.”The college experience is a first for both of them, which makes their built-in support system even more special.“I was set up to go into a trade right out of high school, but I didn’t,” Chris said. “Instead, I went directly into the workforce and did a little bit of everything. I worked in appliance repair, ceramic tile installation, at a parts department for an auto dealership – even built battery chargers for a manufacturing plant before I hired on with the railroad.”Because welding has always been a fascination of his, he’s enjoying being able to make up for lost time.The certifications the Hurleys are pursuing will make them more employable in the long run and will assist them if they do start their own shop, take on fabrication projects or conduct structural work.“We’ve had the opportunity to refine our skills at the college and do it on more and better equipment than we would have otherwise had access to,” Chris said. “We’ve learned a lot about processes and what’s happening at the molecular level so we can better understand what’s going on when we’re actually welding. The program is good about showing you areas you need to work on. It has been a beneficial learning experience without a doubt.”Sean has also appreciated the quality of education NPCC has provided him as well as the affordability.“I’ve been able to live at home, and we each got Pell grants and scholarships, which means our student loans are minimal,” Sean said. “At the same time, I feel like we’re getting a good education. I’ve learned about more obscure processes than I would have by pursuing welding on my own. I’ve enjoyed that and the one-on-one instruction. This is a really nice program.”The men agreed they have learned a lot just from working beside each other, keeping one another accountable and pushing each other to be better.“We get along well,” Chris said. “When one of us is having trouble – the other one is the first person we go to. If there’s a question – we work on it jointly. We really are our own little team in class. This experience has definitely brought us closer together.”

Governor Pete Ricketts issued a statement in response to President Joe Biden’s plan to combat inflation:

“The President’s irresponsible policies have caused runaway inflation.&nbsp; They’re dragging down our economy and forcing Americans to live on less.”

“President Biden has failed to grasp the threat posed by inflation. &nbsp;In July 2021, he downplayed concerns about rising prices, claiming that he expected them to be ‘temporary.’&nbsp; In the ten months since then, inflation has accelerated, soaring to its highest point in over 40 years.&nbsp; The annual inflation rate is up 8.5% over the past 12 months.&nbsp; This rampant inflation is corrosive and taking a toll on everyone, from hardworking families to seniors on fixed incomes.”&nbsp;

“It’s time the Biden-Harris Administration took responsibility for inflation. &nbsp;However, the approach the President announced today will only make things worse.&nbsp; To stop runaway inflation, he needs to lift regulations to unleash the full potential of American energy production and cut red tape to make it easier for businesses to operate.”

“To start, the Biden-Harris Administration should stop handcuffing drilling.&nbsp; Instead, they’ve put even more restrictions in place.&nbsp; Just last month, they prohibited drilling on seven million acres of federal land in the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska.”

“The President needs to quit obstructing oil and gas leases.&nbsp; His first month in office, President Biden tried to suspend all oil and gas leases on federal lands as part of his radical climate policy.&nbsp; Nebraska was among a coalition of states that successfully sued the Administration so that the leases could move forward.&nbsp; After nearly 1½ years in office, the Biden Administration has failed to hold a successful public auction for oil and gas leases on public lands.&nbsp; This is inexcusable at a time of record gas prices.”

“Instead of begging authoritarian governments in Venezuela and Iran to sell more oil, the President should prioritize biofuels produced right here in America’s Heartland.&nbsp; Ethanol saves drivers money at the pump so that they can keep more money in their wallet.&nbsp; The price of wholesale ethanol has recently been as much as $1.20 per gallon less expensive than gasoline.&nbsp; This discount is passed on to motorists who fuel their vehicles with ethanol blends.&nbsp; Filling up with ethanol helps clean up the environment by reducing toxic emissions.&nbsp; Ethanol made from Nebraska corn cuts greenhouse gas emissions by 43% compared to gasoline.&nbsp; Ethanol also creates opportunities for Nebraska’s farm families and strengthens our number one industry: agriculture.&nbsp; Roughly 35-40% of the corn grown in our state goes to our ethanol industry.&nbsp; Authorizing E15 this summer is a start, but the President needs to do more.&nbsp; There’s no good reason why the year-round sale of E15 shouldn’t be permanent.&nbsp; Additionally, Nebraska has demonstrated that E30 fuel can be used in regular vehicles without reducing performance or requiring extra maintenance.&nbsp; The federal government should move full speed to increase volumes of E30 in our nation’s fuel supply.”

“The Biden Administration seems to relish regulation. &nbsp;Their regulatory agenda for 2022 has 35% more regulatory actions than the first fall regulatory agenda issued under the Trump Administration.&nbsp; Additionally, the Biden Administration is growing the number of government bureaucrats.&nbsp; The number of civilian employees in the executive branch of federal government is at an all-time high of 2.2 million.”

“As an example of the way President Biden is growing the size of government, his federal budget recommendation would expand the Environmental Protection Agency’s annual budget by 29%, or about $2.6 billion, while adding 1,900 full-time employees to the agency.&nbsp; He’s also proposed a 24% budget increase (roughly $3 billion) for the Department of the Interior.&nbsp; This includes adding over 1,000 full-time employees to the Fish and Wildlife Service.&nbsp; In the face of soaring inflation, President Biden is prioritizing massive spending increases to support the goals of environmental extremists.&nbsp; This is just one example of how out of touch this administration has been.”

“The President wants to blame inflation on the pandemic, on the Russians, and on his political opponents.&nbsp; This blame game pollutes public discourse.&nbsp; President Biden needs to put the American people above politics to get our economy back on track.”

Dangerous fire conditions, severe weather threaten North Platte area Wednesday, Thursday

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A University of Nebraska regent, Jim Pillen, has won the state’s crowded Republican primary race for governor over a candidate endorsed by Donald Trump. 

It was a notable loss for the former president as he tries to shape the future of the GOP. 

Pillen beat eight challengers, including a Trump-backed businessman, Charles Herbster, accused late in the campaign of groping young women. 

Pillen was endorsed by Gov. Pete Ricketts, who was prevented by term limits from running again. 

Herbster’s defeat raises the stakes on other high-profile races this month in Pennsylvania and Georgia, where Trump has also intervened in campaigns.

Lincoln County’s Most Wanted

Four members of the Mid-Plains Community College Rodeo Team have punched their tickets for the College National Finals Rodeo.

They are: Jacob Haren in the tie-down roping and team roping; Jentri Hurlburt and Barrett Schlieker in the team roping and Koby Jacobson in the bull riding.

Haren ended the season as the Great Plains Region reserve champion header and tie-down roper. It will be the first time that he, Hurlburt and Schlieker compete at the CNFR and the fourth consecutive trip for Jacobson.

MPCC finishes the year third in the men’s team standings, with a 151-point margin, and sixth in the women’s team standings.

Haren placed third in the men’s regional all-around standings with his respective reserve championships in tie-down and team roping. Nick Rettinger, Schlieker and Jacobson also earned placings in the year-end all-around standings by garnering over 200 points in two events throughout the season.

Some of Haren’s teammates made it onto the regional leaderboard in team roping as well. Hurlburt is fourth in heading. On the heeling side, Schlieker is fifth and Rex Day is seventh.

Jacobson is third in the region in bull riding.

Regionally in the steer wrestling, Quade Potter is fifth, Rettinger is sixth, Kaden Wooters is seventh, Haren is eighth, Schlieker is ninth and Jacobson is 10th.

“I'm over the moon excited for our four CNFR qualifiers,” said Wyatt Clark MPCC Rodeo Team timed event coach. “They all compete at a level to bring home national championships. We will be well-represented at the CNFR in June.”

The results come after the final competition of the regular season – the Great Plains Region Rodeo, hosted by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Rodeo Association Friday and Saturday in Lincoln.

MPCC’s men’s team took the championship with 575 points.

Haren claimed the men’s all-around title after winning the tie-down roping and placing fourth and sixth, respectively, in the team roping and steer wrestling.

He won the team roping in the long-go alongside roping partner Riley Staton, of Black Hills State University. The duo stretched their steer to a time of 9 seconds flat. Haren also finished second in the long-go in tie-down roping with a time of 10.4 seconds.

Hurlburt and Schlieker were second in the team roping, followed by Dalton Kunkee and his brother Weston Kunkee, of Mitchell Technical College, who ended up fifth. The Kunkees were also third in the long-go in the team roping.

Wooters came in second in the steer wrestling for Mid-Plains. He won the event in the long-go after throwing his steer to a time of 4.9 seconds.

In the breakaway roping, Andrea Meyer was third in both the long-go and the average. Her long-go time was 2.8 seconds. Hollenbeck followed her at 10th in the average.

Rettinger was eighth in the tie-down roping.

“I am extremely proud of everyone that competed this year,” said Aukai Kaai, MPCC Rodeo Team roughstock coach. “They gave it their all and it showed. I’m excited to see Koby qualify back to the CNFR for a fourth time. He’ll be a veteran and knows what it’ll take to do well there. I’m looking for big things to come from him and the rest of the Mid-Plains kids.”

“I'm very proud of our team’s performance in Lincoln – a great way to end the season with a men’s team championship,” Clark said. “The men’s team was within grasp of qualifying a six-man team to the CNFR with that performance but came up just short.”

The CNFR will be the next competition for Mid-Plains. It is scheduled for June 12-18 in Casper, Wyo.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-A Maxwell man has been sentenced to prison for sexually assaulting a minor.&nbsp;

According to online court records, Drake Baller, 21, appeared for sentencing in Lincoln County District Court on Monday.

Baller was convicted of sexually assaulting a then 15-year-old girl after pleading no contest to amended charges.

The girl told authorities that she had voluntarily gone to Haythorn Ranch in Maxwell to meet Baller in November of 2019.

The girl stated that they went to a bunkhouse on the ranch where they engaged in sexual intercourse. The girl told authorities that, during intercourse, she told Baller "no" and "stop," but he refused.

Baller originally faced two counts of sexual assault of a minor and one count of forcible sexual assault of a minor. As part of a plea deal, two of the charges were dropped.

Judge Richard Birch sentenced Baller to four to eight years in prison on one count of 1st-degree sexual assault of a minor. He was given credit for 92 days already served in jail.

Baller must also register as a sex offender.&nbsp;

Lakes Mac and Ogallala enter second season of reservation requirement

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Roads, bridges and former President Donald Trump will be on West Virginia and Nebraska voters’ minds as they choose congressional candidates in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-campaigns-nebraska-primary-elections-e3c8a0bc5fa4a87b9639aac21185e155">Tuesday’s Republican primary elections.</a>

Two incumbent GOP congressmen who have taken dramatically different approaches to their time in office are facing off in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-technology-business-presidential-donald-trump-d12ab7b5c48a30fd33f0d359e8225c5c">West Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District</a>, one of the most-watched U.S. House primaries on the day’s ballot. Reps. David McKinley and Trump-backed Alex Mooney were pitted against each other after West Virginia lost a congressional seat based on the results of the 2020 U.S. census.

West Virginia’s election is the first of five primaries in which two incumbent U.S. House members will face off. It will be followed by similar contests in Georgia and Michigan and in two Illinois districts.

The primary comes on the heels of a victory by Trump-endorsed conservative JD Vance, author of the bestselling memoir “Hillbilly Elegy,” who defeated six other candidates&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-ohio-senate-9eeeed38cff92dbd88f1a7d48dcbfefc">to win the Ohio Republican primary for U.S. Senate last week.</a>&nbsp;The West Virginia contest will once again test the former president’s clout when his own name isn’t on the ballot.

Nebraska voters will nominate candidates on Tuesday to fill the seat abandoned by U.S. Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, a Republican who resigned from office and ended his reelection bid after he was convicted of lying to federal authorities about an illegal campaign contribution. Fortenberry’s name will still appear on the ballot for the 1st Congressional District because he withdrew after a deadline to certify the ballot, but Sen. Mike Flood, a former speaker of the Nebraska Legislature, appears to have the advantage over five other Republican candidates.

Voters will also pick nominees for Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District in the Omaha area. Three-term Republican Rep. Don Bacon faces a long-shot challenge from Steve Kuehl, an Omaha consultant who got a shoutout from Trump when the former president visited earlier this month.

Trump blasted Bacon as a “bad guy” during a recent rally in the state and had criticized him previously for his support of a federal infrastructure bill that most GOP lawmakers opposed. Bacon also has been mildly critical of Trump in the past, saying the former president bore some responsibility for the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

Trump stopped far short of officially endorsing Kuehl, however, saying: “I think Steve will do well. Good luck, Steve, whoever the hell you are.”

Democrats in Nebraska will nominate either state Sen. Tony Vargas of Omaha or Alisha Shelton, an Omaha mental health therapist, to challenge Bacon in the 2nd, the state’s only competitive district.

In the rural, geographically vast 3rd Congressional District, Republican U.S. Rep. Adrian Smith faces a challenger but is expected to win his party’s nomination. Two Democrats are vying for their party’s nomination within the district, which is overwhelmingly Republican.

In West Virginia, incumbent Rep. Carol Miller is expected to hold her seat in the 1st Congressional District against four Republican challengers.

In the state’s 2nd Congressional District, where McKinley and Mooney are battling each other for the GOP nomination, openly gay former Morgantown city councilor Barry Wendell is competing against security operations manager Angela Dwyer in the Democratic primary.

Mooney has attacked McKinley for voting with 12 other House Republicans in favor of President Joe Biden’s $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill. Trump,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/election-2020-joe-biden-donald-trump-elections-west-virginia-f4e6575647df008979de1b7328537ccd">who won every single county in West Virginia</a>&nbsp;in two presidential elections and said Republicans who voted for the infrastructure bill should be “ashamed of themselves,” endorsed Mooney on the same day Biden signed the infrastructure law.

Trump's clout factors into US House races in W.Va., Nebraska

Trump is facing some of the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-entertainment-ohio-donald-trump-presidential-4b52953fbbdde881f56fe1003f113e50">biggest tests of his influence in Republican primary elections</a>&nbsp;later this month. In Pennsylvania, his&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-congress-mehmet-oz-donald-trump-united-states-senate-6561a6d248a49c3f7813648de3be2f97">endorsed Senate candidate, TV’s Dr. Mehmet Oz</a>, is locked in a competitive race against former hedge fund CEO David McCormick and five others, while his&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-donald-trump-north-carolina-raleigh-congress-db146ddf43d6825b8695742d9c05baf9">candidate in North Carolina, U.S. Rep. Ted Budd</a>, is competing in a field that includes a dozen other Republicans. In Georgia, Trump has&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/voting-rights-2022-midterm-elections-elections-donald-trump-georgia-ddd81d22b571a71fce1628482e02e801">endorsed primary challengers to Gov. Brian Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger</a>, both of whom defied him by rejecting his false claims of voter fraud in the 2020 election.

In Nebraska, the allegations against Herbster, a longtime supporter of Trump’s,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-donald-trump-campaigns-presidential-nebraska-c328c35d9f8f21e7a7e04a2f8339bff5">didn’t stop the former president from holding a rally with him</a>&nbsp;earlier this month.

“I really think he’s going to do just a fantastic job, and if I didn’t feel that, I wouldn’t be here,” Trump said at the rally at a racetrack outside Omaha.

In a story last month, the&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2022/04/14/gop-state-senator-seven-other-women-say-charles-herbster-groped-them-he-denies-allegations/" target="_blank">Nebraska Examiner interviewed six women</a>&nbsp;who claimed Herbster had groped their buttocks, outside of their clothes, during political events or beauty pageants. A seventh woman said Herbster once cornered her privately and kissed her forcibly.

One of the accusers, Republican state Sen. Julie Slama, said Herbster reached up her skirt and touched her inappropriately at the Douglas County Republican Party’s annual Elephant Remembers dinner in 2019. The Associated Press does not typically identify people who say they are victims of sexual assault unless they choose to come forward publicly, as Slama has done.

Herbster&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lawsuits-donald-trump-nebraska-omaha-pete-ricketts-99d9228262581e3200617c714632f5e2">filed a defamation lawsuit</a>&nbsp;against Slama, saying she falsely accused him in an effort to derail his campaign. Slama responded with a countersuit against Herbster, alleging sexual battery.

Herbster has suggested in television ads that Pillen and Ricketts conspired with Slama to falsely accuse him of sexual assault — allegations the three deny.

Lindstrom has faced a barrage of attacks as well, with third-party television ads funded by Ricketts that portray him as too liberal for the conservative state. One digitally altered ad shows Lindstrom standing in front of a rainbow flag with a coronavirus mask superimposed over his face. A mail ad notes that Lindstrom was endorsed by U.S. Rep. Brad Ashford, a moderate Republican-turned-Democrat who died last month of brain cancer.

Nebraska Secretary of State Bob Evnen, a Republican, predicted that 35% of registered voters will cast ballots in the primary, the highest percentage since 2006, based on what he’s seen so far.

Nebraska Republicans and Democrats will also pick their candidates to run for the seat previously held by Republican U.S. Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, who&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/campaigns-kevin-mccarthy-legislature-nebraska-nancy-pelosi-7f2bf99b536c5ad93071a544f661e252">resigned from office</a>&nbsp;and ended his reelection bid in March after he was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/elections-los-angeles-campaigns-nebraska-congress-66c320661e21eef5d3083254e8a686f7">convicted of federal corruption charges</a>.

State Sen. Mike Flood, a former speaker of the Nebraska Legislature, is a top contender for the Republican nomination, while state Sen. Patty Pansing Brooks is likely to win the Democratic nod. Flood will enter the race as a strong favorite in the Republican-heavy 1st Congressional District, which includes Lincoln, small towns and a large swath of eastern Nebraska farmland.

In the Omaha area, Republican U.S. Rep. Don Bacon faces a long-shot primary challenge from Omaha consultant Steve Kuehl in the 2nd Congressional District. Democrats Alisha Shelton and state Sen. Tony Vargas are running for their party’s nomination as well in Nebraska’s only competitive congressional district.

Trump blasted Bacon during his visit, calling him a “bad guy.” The former president has criticized the three-term Republican for supporting Biden’s infrastructure law. Bacon has been mildly critical of Trump in the past, saying he bore some responsibility for the Jan. 6 attack.

Trump stopped short of officially endorsing Kuehl, however, saying: “I think Steve will do well. Good luck, Steve, whoever the hell you are.”

Election 2022: Groping claims roil Nebraska governor primary

CHADRON – Chadron State College student Creighton Harrington of Loup City, Nebraska, has been awarded the Steve Taylor Study Abroad Scholarship and the International Studies Abroad (ISA) Summer Pathways 2022 Scholarship.

Through the scholarships, Harrington will travel to Malaga, Spain, this summer to study intensive Spanish. Malaga is a small coastal beach town on the Mediterranean Sea. She chose the location to experience Europe and to improve her Spanish.

The Steve Taylor Study Abroad Scholarship is a Chadron State Foundation scholarship funded by Taylor, a former CSC employee, and his wife, Janice. The scholarship was started in 2005 and is awarded annually to CSC students planning to study abroad.

According to the Foundation, Taylor created the scholarship due to his love of travel and he wanted to help more students have that experience. While at CSC, he worked to bring international students to campus. He also assisted with developing study abroad trips because he felt students learned more about the world from seeing and experiencing it themselves.

The ISA Summer Pathways Scholarship was created in memory of Michaela Farnum, a Seattle University student who died following a hiking accident while studying in Chile in 2007, and is awarded to students at affiliate colleges who display merit and exhibit financial need while studying abroad in an ISA program.

Harrington, a sophomore Human Biology major with a minor in Nutrition, said she applied for the scholarships because studying abroad was her dream, but was hampered by affordability.

“Unfortunately, study abroad can be very expensive, so I tried to seek any opportunity to help with this financial burden. I am so grateful for the help these scholarships provided,” Harrington said. .”

She will leave for Malaga May 26 and return August 1, traveling with an ISA group of other American students. During her time studying abroad, she also hopes to visit Italy, Switzerland, Portugal, Morocco, and France.

Previously, Harrington enjoyed travel to Mexico and Puerto Rico.

“Experiencing different cultures really opens your eyes to the different ways and viewpoints of life,” Harrington said.

She also views traveling to Spain as beneficial for her future career as a pre-medicine student.

“My goal this summer in Spain is to improve my Spanish for my future career as a doctor and shadow healthcare facilities in Spain to learn how their healthcare system works,” Harrington said.

In addition to coursework, she’s planning cultural excursions to Alhambra, an ancient Islamic palace and fortress, Pablo Picasso’s birthplace, and several other sites.
