NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-The North Platte Police Department will be
participating in this year’s national Click It or Ticket seat belt campaign,
which will take place May 23 through June 5.&nbsp; 

The North Platte Police Department will be
teaming up with Law Enforcement nationwide for a Border to Border kickoff
event.&nbsp; Extra Officers will be on the
streets of North Platte, with a primary focus on enforcing “Occupant Restraint”
laws.&nbsp; 

In 2019, according to the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration, almost 10,000 unbuckled passenger
vehicle occupants were killed in U.S. Crashes.&nbsp;&nbsp;
&nbsp;

“In 2021,
Nebraska lost 135 community members because they did not buckle their
seatbelts,” said Bill Kovarik, NDOT Highway Safety Administrator.

If you know a friend or
family member who does not buckle up when they drive, let them know you are
counting on them to buckle up.&nbsp; Seat
belts save lives.

On April 21, 2022, the CDC released a Health Alert Network (HAN) Advisory (<a href="https://emergency.cdc.gov/han/2022/han00462.asp" target="_blank">https://emergency.cdc.gov/han/2022/han00462.asp&nbsp;</a>) describing a cluster of cases of hepatitis (liver inflammation) in children, potentially associated with an adenovirus infection. The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and local health departments (LHDs) are investigating nine similar cases of pediatric hepatitis of unknown origin, which were reported by community members and Children's Hospital.

Among these nine, hepatitis was identified between November 5, 2021, and March 6, 2022. The median age of the patients is two (range = 1 - 9). Three of the nine tested positive for adenovirus. There have been no identified transplants and no identified deaths.&nbsp;Investigations are ongoing.

Dr. Matthew Donahue, Nebraska State Epidemiologist said, “Adenoviruses spread through respiratory droplets and through contact with contaminated surfaces. They traditionally cause common colds, diarrhea, and pink eye. It's not yet clear if these cases of hepatitis are a result of adenovirus infection, a combination of infections, or a factor not yet identified. The unknowns surrounding these cases underscore the role of public health investigations. Clinicians should notify their&nbsp;<a href="https://dhhs.ne.gov/CHPM%20Documents/contacts.pdf" target="_blank">local public health department&nbsp;</a>&nbsp;if they're treating a patient less than 10 years of age with hepatitis of unknown origin (AST or ALT &gt;500U/L)."

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-North Platte Community College will break ground on the expansion of its Health and Science Center May 25. The public is invited to attend the ceremony at 4 p.m. on the southwest corner of the building.

Because of construction, parking will be limited. Guests are asked to park either south or west of the McDonald-Belton Building.

The Health and Science Center is located on NPCC’s South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd. Built in 2012, it is home to the college’s nursing, medical laboratory technician, emergency medical services, paramedic, dental assisting, math, biology, physics and engineering programs.

As the demand for more nurses and health care professionals has increased throughout the college’s 18-county service area and beyond, so has the need for more space to train those professionals.

By adding on to the Health and Science Center, more classrooms can be created for nursing courses. Additional lab space for nursing and emergency services and an office area for new faculty will also be constructed.

Conference rooms, a classroom with flexible table and chair arrangements, private workspaces for students and a virtual innovation lab will complement existing programming and enhance learning experiences.

The total cost of the expansion is estimated at $4.8 million.

The North Platte Community College Foundation is continuing to fundraise for the project. Groundbreaking planned for NPCC Health and Science Center expansion project

PINE RIDGE, S.D. (AP) — Authorities are investigating a drive-by shooting that killed a child on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. 

Tribal officers say the shooting occurred at 9 p.m. Thursday on U.S. Highway 18 in Pine Ridge. 

Witnesses say the vehicle shot at the home and left before officers arrived. 

Law information officials are asking for information from the public.

 No further information has been released.

Strong cross winds will be hazardous to light weight and high profile vehicles, including campers and tractor trailers.

High Wind Warnings in effect for Panhandle 

&nbsp;Don Batie has been appointed to fill a vacant seat on the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.dawsonpower.com/" target="_blank">Dawson Public Power District</a>&nbsp;Board of Directors. He began his duties in May.

The Dawson PPD Board of Directors serves as a governing body of the&nbsp;District&nbsp;and represents the interests of its customers. Board members are elected to six-year terms. When a director is unable to complete their term, a replacement is appointed. Batie will serve the Dawson Subdivision until December 31, 2022. A board member will be chosen in the November General Election and will begin their duties January 2023.

A Lexington native and farmer, Batie actively serves on various boards including as the Vice Chairman of the Nebraska Natural Resources Commission and the Dawson County Planning Commission.

“I’ve always had an interest in the power system and I’m proud of Nebraska’s history of public power,” Batie said. “I feel it’s my responsibility to be a servant to our community. Hopefully, I can lend my expertise and share what I have learned.”

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The top race in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/2022-midterm-elections">Tuesday’s primary elections</a>&nbsp;in Nebraska and West Virginia is a heavily contested Republican primary for Nebraska governor, featuring a Donald Trump-endorsed candidate who has been accused of groping multiple women.

Voters in Nebraska will also be nominating candidates to replace former U.S. Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, a Republican&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/elections-los-angeles-campaigns-nebraska-congress-66c320661e21eef5d3083254e8a686f7">convicted in March</a>&nbsp;on charges he lied to federal authorities about an illegal campaign contribution he received from a Nigerian billionaire.

In West Virginia, two incumbent congressmen are facing off in a Republican primary after redistricting cost the state a seat in the U.S. House.

What to watch as Tuesday’s primaries unfold:

HOW MUCH SWAY DOES TRUMP HAVE IN NEBRASKA?

In Nebraska’s Republican primary for governor, Trump has endorsed Charles Herbster, a wealthy agribusinessman and cattle breeder who has positioned himself as a political outsider.

Herbster has&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-pete-ricketts-nebraska-legislature-c3e80ae9a8235d9db3896c35c997543a">recently faced allegations that he groped young women</a>, including a Nebraska state senator and a former legislative staffer. He vehemently denies the accusations and has filed a defamation lawsuit against the lawmaker, state Sen. Julie Slama. She filed a countersuit, accusing Herbster of sexual battery. Despite the allegations, Trump has stood by Herbster and appeared with him at a rally last week.

His main rival is University of Nebraska regent Jim Pillen, a former college football player and veterinarian who owns a hog farm operation and swine breeding-stock company. Pillen has won support from high-profile conservatives, including Gov. Pete Ricketts, former Gov. Kay Orr, the influential Nebraska Farm Bureau and former Nebraska football coach Tom Osborne.

And in a surprising twist, state Sen. Brett Lindstrom of Omaha has risen to top-tier status as well with support from Omaha’s Republican mayor and ads in which he pitches himself as a “new generation” of leader. He is considered the more moderate option to Herbster and Pillen.

The winner of the GOP primary is expected to face state Sen. Carol Blood, who is all but certain to win the Democratic nomination for governor over a little-known candidate who hasn’t actively campaigned.

HOW DID A CONGRESSMAN’S CONVICTION RESHAPE THE PRIMARY?

U.S. House primary races are usually low-key affairs in Nebraska, with little turnover among the Republican incumbents. But the state has an open seat this year following&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/campaigns-kevin-mccarthy-legislature-nebraska-nancy-pelosi-7f2bf99b536c5ad93071a544f661e252">Fortenberry’s resignation.</a>

Fortenberry initially planned to seek reelection to a 10th term despite a federal indictment and launched attack ads against his main challenger, Republican state Sen. Mike Flood. He dropped his bid after his conviction, and Flood gained momentum with endorsements from Ricketts and former Gov. Dave Heineman.

Flood is now the strong favorite to win the nomination for the 1st Congressional District out of a field of five Republican candidates. Fortenberry’s name will still appear on the ballot because he withdrew after the state’s deadline to certify candidates.

The GOP nominee is expected to face Democratic state Sen. Patty Pansing Brooks in November. Pansing Brooks is running against University of Nebraska-Lincoln student Jazari Kual Zakaria in the Democratic primary.

Flood and Pansing Brooks will also face each other in a June 28 special election to decide who serves the rest of Fortenberry’s term. The November general election will determine who fills the seat starting in January 2023.

The 1st Congressional District encompasses a stretch of eastern Nebraska, excluding Omaha and most of its suburbs. The Republican-leaning district includes Lincoln as well as large stretches of farmland and small towns.

HOW MUCH DO INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENTS MATTER TO WEST VIRGINIA VOTERS?

A&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-technology-business-presidential-donald-trump-d12ab7b5c48a30fd33f0d359e8225c5c">Republican primary in West Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District</a>&nbsp;between two incumbents could hang on support for President Joe Biden’s $1.2 trillion infrastructure law in the GOP-leaning state.

One of the incumbents, Rep. David McKinley, was among 13 House Republicans to vote for the bill. He cited the state’s “D” infrastructure grade from the American Society of Civil Engineers, saying it would have been a betrayal to vote based on “party politics” on an issue so important to residents.

West Virginia, one of the nation’s poorest states, is slated to get $6 billion in infrastructure money.

The other incumbent, Rep. Alex Mooney, voted against the infrastructure bill and won Trump’s endorsement the day Biden signed the measure into law. Mooney and Trump have called McKinley and other Republicans who voted for the infrastructure bill RINOs, or “Republicans In Name Only.” Mooney called the bill “Biden and Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s spending masterplan” and said it will contribute to inflation.

While in Congress, McKinley and Mooney voted together the vast majority of the time. But the infrastructure vote will serve as a test of Trump’s clout in a state that wholeheartedly embraced him in two presidential elections.

"After being extracted from the vehicle, the driver, a 64-year-old man from the North Platte area, was determined not to have life threatening injuries," Grant County Sheriff Mike Rath said.&nbsp;

The cause of the accident is under investigation.&nbsp;

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Advocates for legalizing recreational marijuana in South Dakota have submitted thousands of petition signatures to the secretary of state. 

They say they've collected enough to place the initiative on the November ballot. 

South Dakotans for Better Marijuana Laws has scrambled in recent days to gather the nearly 17,000 petition signatures required to place a proposed law on the ballot. 

The signatures must come from registered South Dakota voters.

 Matt Schweich, campaign director for the organization, says the campaign evaluated the petitions and estimates it has at least 19,250 valid signatures.

attractions for activities that attract visitors to Lincoln County to use our visitor services.

Under this authority, the North Platte

following recommendations and approved grant funding at a special meeting held on May 4, 2022. The applications totaled
$92,885.83 in requests
and a total of $38,187.00 was awarded.

North Platte Visitors Bureau awards grants to local organizations

MANHATTAN – In the United States, screens are everywhere.&nbsp;

Televisions, laptops, tablets, electronic bulletin boards and – of course – cell phones.&nbsp;

“Yet what we know about positive childhood development,” said K-State Research and Extension child development specialist Bradford Wiles, “is that screens are not very helpful. Often, they are simply a mindless activity that doesn’t grow children’s brains or their social-emotional or physical development.”&nbsp;

Many healthcare authorities and pediatricians – among them the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.aap.org/en/patient-care/media-and-children/" target="_blank">American Academy of Pediatrics</a>&nbsp;– have published guidelines indicating children under age 2 should have no screen time, while everyone else should limit screen time outside of work or school to 1-2 hours per day.&nbsp;

Wiles, who has&nbsp;<a href="https://bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/pubs/MF3248.pdf" target="_blank">authored a K-State Research and Extension publication</a>&nbsp;on the topic, says that there is an “opportunity cost” associated with screen time. “If you’re engaging in screen time, you’re not doing things that can help you with skill building in multiple domains – physical, mental and social.”&nbsp;

Screens, he said, are often substituted for babysitters, or a break for parents or other caregivers to get other tasks done.&nbsp;

“If that’s for a limited time, that’s fine; I understand the need to perform your household duties,” Wiles said. “You’re not harming your child by doing that, but be mindful of how much time is going by and do your very best to make up for that by being intentional in engaging with your children before and after screen time.”&nbsp;

Wiles is careful to indicate that technology, itself, is not the problem. “The problem is when you use that tool to isolate yourself or your children,” he said.&nbsp;

“If that tool is being used for engagement, then great. That is how children of all ages learn…through dialogue, discussion and shared experience. The ability to talk and learn with and from each other is really a benefit to human development.”&nbsp;

Other things to keep in mind, according to Wiles, include:&nbsp;

Families with very young children&nbsp;

Screen time should be severely limited for those under age 2 – ideally they should have none. Wiles said screen time is not nearly as stimulating as interaction with other humans. Spend time playing with young children instead.&nbsp;

Families with children ages 6-17&nbsp;

Establish “screen free” zones in the home, including bedrooms. It may seem like punishment – and difficult to enforce – but the payoffs are great. If families choose to incorporate more screens into their lives, seek ways to use them in active ways, such as singing or dancing along to a favorite music video.&nbsp;

Tablets and smartphones may provide an opportunity for families to play interactive games, such as puzzles. Less-skilled family members learn more by asking questions, receiving instruction and getting feedback.&nbsp;

Decide in advance what you will view as a family. Avoid watching TV during meals or leaving the TV on for background noise. In addition, avoid texting or talking on a phone during meals or when outside with your family.&nbsp;

LINCOLN, Neb. (May 6, 2022) -To celebrate National Travel and Tourism Week, Nebraska Tourism recognized seven tourism employees from across the state with the Outstanding Frontline Employee Award.

This award honors individuals who go above and beyond while interacting with travelers and locals. They strive to enhance visitors’ experiences and demonstrate high levels of customer service and pride in their destination. Nebraska tourism industry members were encouraged to submit nominations for outstanding frontline employees in their community.

“We are lucky to have so many dedicated frontline workers serving visitors in Nebraska,” said John Ricks, Nebraska Tourism executive director. “Our tourism industry relies on employees like these who create positive experiences for others, and we are pleased to recognize them for their work.”

The 2022 Outstanding Frontline Employee Award recipients are:

Fort Kearny State Historical Park/Fort Kearny State Recreation Area, Kearney

As park superintendent, Gene has gone above and beyond to make sure that both Fort Kearny State Historical Park and Fort Kearny State Recreation Area have been welcoming places to visit for more than 50 years. He’s also been awarded the Celebrate Tourism Award for the work and dedication he has displayed.

Crane Trust Nature &amp; Visitor Center, Wood River

Sally has assisted visitors as Outreach Specialist at the Nature Center for more than 10 years and put a great deal of thought and effort into visitor experience in the gift shop. She goes above and beyond to make sure each visitor has a wonderful experience and leaves with a special reminder of their visit. Sally is also valued for her experience and ability to remain cool and calm.

Nihad, breakfast host at Lincoln’s Hyatt Place hotel, is an example of a hard worker who does everything she can to make her community better. She and her family came to Lincoln more than four years ago as refugees from Iraq, and Nihad has balanced providing great service at work while taking care of three children at home and becoming an American citizen.

Fontenelle Forest Nature Center, Bellevue

Miriam, who is a Visitor Services Assistant at the forest’s Nature Center, is the friendly face that visitors remember when they return home. She provides top-notch service to everyone who passes through and has appeared on Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom.

Nebraska Tourism recognizes Outstanding Frontline Employee Award winners

CHADRON – Chadron State College’s new program,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/fcs/nutrition/index.csc" target="_blank">Nutrition and Dietetics</a>, will be offered in Fall 2022.&nbsp;The degree program, based on the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) standards, requires a combination of Biology, Chemistry, Family and Consumer Sciences, and Nutrition courses.

According to Dr. Erin Norman, associate professor in Family and Consumer Sciences, the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) is an excellent match for students interested in science, health care, and nutrition. She said the core curriculum is similar to those in pre-medicine and pre-nursing nursing programs, but with an emphasis on nutrition and food. Graduates with this degree can pursue careers in food service, public health, community nutrition, long-term care, sports nutrition, research and education.

Norman is excited for the program to start.

“There is a great need for more registered dietitians as the health issues in the United States continue to climb, especially in rural regions.&nbsp;Our DPD program is specially designed to give our graduates a strong competitive edge, and it meets the pre-requisite requirements to be accepted into many different master's degree programs at a wide variety of colleges and universities,” Norman said. “This is key, as the Registered Dietitian requirements move to the master’s degree level starting in 2024 and the competition will be high.”

After graduation with 120 credit hours, students with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher in general studies courses, a B or higher in previous nutrition classes, and a C or higher in all DPD required science classes will receive verification statements. The verification statement is needed before students apply for a required ACEND accredited supervised practice experience.

Norman said CSC graduates may become a Registered Dietitian or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist if they complete the required course work, and a dietetic internship or supervised practice experience that has been accredited by ACEND. Finally, students will need to pass the Commission on Dietetic Registration exam for the credential they seek, and obtain any additional certifications required by the state where they want to work.

New nutrition, dietetics degree offered at Chadron State College

PHILLIPS COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on multiple charges after a standoff in Phillipsburg.

Just before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, deputies responded to a reported domestic violence incident in the 400 block of D Street in Phillipsburg, according to a media release from the Phillips Co. Sheriff.

Upon meeting with the reporting party it was learned that a man had discharged a firearm at the reporting party inside a residence.  The man remained in the home. 

Deputies contacted the man on the phone and asked him to step outside so they could speak with him.  He refused to do so and a perimeter was established around the residence and nearby residents were evacuated for their safety.  Attempts to get the man to come outside continued throughout the night. 

Assistance was requested from the Kansas Highway Patrol Special Response Team which arrived early Thursday morning.  They assumed control of the perimeter and negotiations with the man continued. 

At approximately 2:00 p.m. Thursday 78-year-old Edgar R. Wintersteen surrendered without incident.  He was checked by medical personnel and transported to the Phillips County Sheriffs Office where he was booked into jail on requested charges of Aggravated Assault, Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm, Interference with Law Enforcement and Criminal Damage to property.  He remains in custody with a $30,000 bond. 

Upon Wintersteen's surrender, a search warrant was executed on the residence and a stolen firearm was recovered for which charges are pending.

Sheriff.Upon meeting with the reporting party it was learned that a man had discharged a firearm at the reporting party inside a residence. The man remained in the home. Deputies contacted the man on the phone and asked him to step outside so they could speak with him. He refused to do so and a perimeter was established around the residence and nearby residents were evacuated for their safety. Attempts to get the man to come outside continued throughout the night. Assistance was requested from the Kansas Highway Patrol Special Response Team which arrived early Thursday morning. They assumed control of the perimeter and negotiations with the man continued. At approximately 2:00 p.m. Thursday 78-year-old Edgar R. Wintersteen surrendered without incident. He was checked by medical personnel and transported to the Phillips County Sheriffs Office where he was booked into jail on requested charges of Aggravated Assault, Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm, Interference with Law Enforcement and Criminal Damage to property. He remains in custody with a $30,000 bond. Upon Wintersteen's surrender, a search warrant was executed on the residence and a stolen firearm was recovered for which charges are pending.

North Platte Community College music students Lisa Pickett, of North Platte, Trenton Emmons, of McCook, and Faith Miller, of North Platte, were presented with achievement awards Thursday evening during NPCC’s spring concert.

Pickett was named Instrumentalist of the Year, Emmons was recognized as Musician of the Year and Miller was selected as Vocalist of the Year.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-A teen driver was transported to the hospital after his vehicle struck a tree in North Platte on Thursday afternoon.

At around 4:45 p.m., police and fire personnel responded to a one-vehicle accident at the intersection of 4th Street and Sheridan Ave.

It was reported that a vehicle had left the roadway and struck a tree.

Reports indicate the 16-year-old male driver was traveling westbound on 4th Street when he suffered a medical emergency and struck the tree.
