NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-A North Platte man was arrested Sunday after he allegedly pulled a knife during an argument and made threats.

According to police, at around 1:10 p.m., officers responded to a disturbance in the 400 block of North Dewey St. It was reported that a male subject had been involved in an argument and brandished a knife.

Officers arrived and contact with the alleged victim. Officers also located the suspect, Donald McDonald, 61, nearby.

The victim told officers he and McDonald had been "exchanging words" when the victim got into their vehicle and attempted to leave.

Police said the victim reported that McDonald then pulled a knife and began walking toward the vehicle. As he got closer, the victim told police McDonald raised the knife in the air as if he were going to stab someone.

Fearing McDonald was going to stab him through the open window, the victim accelerated and fled the area.

Police said as officers approached McDonald, he was observed dropping a knife on the ground.

Following further investigation, officers determined there was probable cause to arrest McDonald on suspicion of terroristic threats and use of a weapon to commit a felony.

McDonald was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

Deputies with the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office assisted with the incident.

2022 Nebraska Passport program underway

LINCOLN – Nebraska State College System Chancellor Paul D. Turman will be Chadron State College’s Spring Commencement speaker. The combined undergraduate and graduate ceremony will be in the Chicoine Center Saturday, May 7, at 10 a.m.

“It is a distinct honor to speak to Chadron State graduates as they embark on the next chapter of their lives. I always enjoy my visits to Chadron and look forward to being on campus and being a part of such an important event,” Turman said.

Turman, who joined the NSCS in 2019, has worked with the governor and legislature to create the Career Scholarship Initiative, approved funding for Chadron State’s Math Science addition and renovation, extended bond funding to address maintenance and repair needs at State Colleges, implemented the 2025 Strategic Plan, and led the State Colleges through the 2019 flood and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prior to joining the NSCS,, Turman worked for the South Dakota Board of Regents for eight years.&nbsp; He began as the Director of Academic Assessment in 2006 and became the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs in 2008. As the System Vice President for Academic Affairs, he provided leadership for the academic and research functions of the system by managing initiatives targeted at improving student preparation, progression, and completion through efforts to improve time to degree, increase affordability, and foster collaborative programs.

Previously, as System Vice President for Research and Economic Development, Turman provided leadership to advance grant, research, and scholarly goals by working with state government leaders.

Turman earned his doctorate in Interpersonal Communication from the University of Nebraska Lincoln, his master’s degree from South Dakota State University in Communication, and his bachelor’s degree from South Dakota State University.

He serves on the University of Nebraska Medical Center Rural Health Advisory Committee, the Nebraska Educational Telecommunications Commission, Nebraska Workforce Development Council, and the Nebraska Information Technology Commission.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration students at North Platte Community College are now NC3-certified in four areas: residential airflow, refrigeration diagnostics, variable speed motors and air-to-air heat pumps.

To receive the certifications, they had to go through a “hands-on” course led by a qualified instructor using appropriate tools, equipment and practice materials in their labs. Upon completion, the students took online exams.

The Trane certifications were developed and administered by NC3 and are compatible with other industry-recognized certifications.

North Platte Comm. College HVAC-R students earn NC3 certifications

GILBERT, Ariz. (AP) — An amputee athlete from Arizona has set an unofficial world record, running 102 marathons in 102 days. 

Jacky Hunt-Broersma achieved that goal on Thursday and now says she may run two more for good measure. She's been covering the classic 26.2-mile distance every day since Jan. 17. 

The South Africa native runs on a carbon-fiber prosthesis since she lost her left leg below the knee to a rare cancer. 

The previous women's record of 101 marathons in as many days was set earlier this month by Kate Jayden, a nondisabled British runner.

TYNDALL, S.D. (AP) — Prosecutors are weighing whether to pursue the death penalty for a Scotland man if he’s convicted of shooting five people, including three fatally, in Bon Homme County.

 Forty-two-year-old Francis Lange is accused of killing his former girlfriend, Angela Monclova, as well as her father, Librado Monclova, and Diane Akins. 

Vicki Monclova and a 5-year-old girl who has not been identified, were injured in the Nov. 9, 2021 shooting at a Scotland residence. 

Circuit Judge Cheryle Gering has granted a second extension on the state’s death penalty decision. 

She has received a request from both the prosecution and defense for more time to complete Lange’s mental evaluation.

Due to ongoing vandalism of the Buffalo Early Learning Center Outdoor Classroom, the school will close entry/ exit gates&nbsp;at 5:00 p.m. through May 19, 2022. Destruction in the outdoor classroom reported last fall led the district to close the space for two weeks.

Director of the Buffalo Early Learning Center, Peggy Romshek, said, “we have incurred over $10,000 in damages to the outdoor classroom in the past several months.” Romshek went on to add that video surveillance of the outdoor space has helped in holding vandals accountable for their actions; however, this has not been enough to slow the number of broken items, unsupervised children, or trash being left behind by users.

The outdoor classroom at the learning center engages young learners in education through play. The space is funded through tax-payer dollars, grants, and sponsorships from school and community members. Romshek added, “we take pride in the learning space for our students and want to spend the money allocated to the center on enhancements, not replacements due to misuse after school hours.”

Please note; that entry/ exit gates will be locked&nbsp;at 5:00 p.m. through May 19, 2022. The outdoor classroom will remain closed throughout the summer for repairs and will only be open for district-approved educational purposes.

Vandalism forces closure of Buffalo Early Learning Center's Outdoor Classroom

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-While southwest Nebraska will finally get a break from the wind, north-central Nebraska will once again spend the day Sunday in a High Wind Warning.

Winds wreaked havoc on southwest Nebraska for the last several days with the highest recorded gust in the area, 68 mph, happening just north of North Platte on Sunday.

As the wind makes its way eastward, Old Man Winter has decided he's not done with the Panhandle and the Sandhills, with forecasters predicting accumulating snow on Monday.&nbsp;

Much of the state also found relief in the form of rain over the last several days with some locations in the northern part of the state receiving over three inches. The North Platte area saw just over two inches of much-needed moisture.

Mild temperatures return to the area early next week with chances for moisture Monday and mid-week. The weekend will welcome back more Spring-like temperatures, with highs climbing into the mid to upper seventies.

North Platte receives over 2 inches of rain; Old Man Winter makes brief return Monday

WIND CAVE NATIONAL PARK, SD – Visitors to Wind Cave can now reserve cave tour tickets online up to 120 days in advance. Tickets can be purchased through www.recreation.gov, a website used for reservations at thousands of sites across the country. &nbsp;

“We’re very pleased with the feedback we’ve gotten concerning our reservation system. It eliminated the lines of people waiting to buy tickets that we had last year during spring break,” said Superintendent Leigh Welling. “Half of our tickets will still be available for same day purchase, allowing people on the spur of the moment to tour the cave.” &nbsp;

Tour tickets can be reserved, or canceled, up until three days before the tour. Any unsold tickets would then be available for purchase on the day of the tour. There is no refund for late arrivals or no shows. The park will no longer be taking reservations over the phone for its Candlelight or Wild Cave Tour; they must be made online.&nbsp;

hiatus of two years, the North Platte Noon Rotary Club will bring the Josh the
Otter Water Safety and Literacy Project to the kindergarten classes of North
Platte. 

Josh and Rotarian readers will visit classrooms the first week of May. This
is North Platte Rotary’s 6th year joining in the water safety project. 

The
project will reach the 279 kindergarten students in 11 elementary schools in
North Platte, including all the North Platte Public Schools, McDaid Elementary,
and Our Redeemer Lutheran School.&nbsp; In eight
years, the club will reach nearly 3500 students. The club will also provide 554
books to the two years we missed because of COVID. This year 1st and
2nd graders will receive a copy of the Josh the Otter Water
Safety book. &nbsp;

“Our Noon Rotary Club first learned about Josh the Otter from our friend
Trudy Merritt with the North Platte Rec Center when she spoke at one of our
meetings," said Misty Robertson, Chair of the Rotary Josh the Otter Committee."Trudy shared what the Rec Center
was doing with the “Little Otters” water training program and provided
information about the Josh the Otter reading program that many Rotary clubs
have taken on as a project.”

“Bringing Josh the Otter to kindergarten
classes is a great way to promote water safety in our community, in a way that
would be fun and memorable for the kids," said

“After this year’s program, which runs through the first week
of May, we will have reached over 2,700 kids in North Platte in these 6 years

The North Platte
Noon Rotary Club partners with the drowning prevention nonprofit that created
the program, the Joshua Collingsworth Memorial Foundation (JCMF). JCMF has
recently been nationally recognized for their partnership work with
organizations such as Rotary International. In March, JCMF received the 2012
Community Lifesaving Award from the National Drowning Prevention Alliance
(NDPA) and the National Water Safety Congress 2012 Regional Award for their
ongoing efforts to promote water safety awareness throughout the United States.

coast of eastern Florida to the shores of Hawaii, the message of Josh the Otter
is spreading quickly! Rotarians across the country and even the world are
hearing the life-saving message and are excited at the positive changes that a
partnership between Josh the Otter and Rotary International can bring to
communities everywhere. Since 2010, Rotarians have distributed thousands of
Josh the Baby Otter books and everyday more clubs are starting their own Josh
the Otter literacy and water safety projects. Currently, over 20 U.S. states
and the country of Pakistan have Rotarians pursuing the Josh the Otter project
within their own clubs. With drowning a leading cause of unintentional death
for children all over the world, Rotarians are helping to save thousands of

Parents Blake and Kathy Collingsworth honor the memory of their two-year-old
son Joshua, who died on June 4, 2008 after falling into the family pool three
days earlier. They believed they had every safety precaution in place, but the
reality is that a drowning can occur in mere moments. After losing Joshua, they
felt compelled to help reduce the dramatic numbers of deaths by drowning that
occur in our country and around the world. The Joshua Collingsworth Memorial
Foundation was created in July of 2008 to serve as a catalyst to strengthen
water safety awareness and create an early childhood educational program. Their
goal is to empower children to be safe in and around ALL bodies of water to
prevent similar tragedies. The Josh the Otter Water Safety and Awareness
Project is dedicated to teaching young children about water safety through the
use of Josh the Baby Otter a book written by Blake, which was recently
translated into Spanish. The foundation and its partners have distributed

CAMBRIDGE, Neb. (AP) — A deadly southwestern Nebraska wildfire that has been burning since last week is near to being fully contained, officials said Friday.

Crews have 97% of the Road 702 Fire contained behind fire breaks, the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency said Friday. That has led to fewer firefighters on the scene as management of the fire has reverted to Nebraska officials from a federal regional oversight team.

More than 220 firefighters and other personnel&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/wildfires-fires-nebraska-weather-39706b8c0d6b94a6bd707387dc02b7ae">had been working in recent days&nbsp;</a>to dig trenches and create other breaks to contain the fire, which burned an estimated 69 square miles of mostly grass and farm land.

While officials marked crews’ success in containing the flames, they also noted that severe storms were expected to bring back to the region strong winds of up to 65 mph Friday night into Saturday.

“The potential for gusty outflow winds from evening thunderstorms could result in very high rates of fire spread,” the agency said in its statement Friday.

Last week,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/wildfires-fires-nebraska-emergency-management-5fbf79a71c25690f7f979e29f80e27a2">a retired volunteer fire chief helping with the effort died&nbsp;</a>when his truck went off the road in a blinding haze of smoke and dust. The fire has also destroyed several homes and injured several firefighters.

Officials: Deadly Nebraska wildfire nearly contained

Today, April 29 at 5:30 a.m. the Grant County Sheriff's Office responded to a one-vehicle rollover accident on Highway 2, west of Hyannis.

The truck rollover was caused by heavy rain and hail on the highway.&nbsp;

"Seatbelts were in use and no injuries were reported," Grant County Sheriff Mike Rath said.&nbsp;

2022 candidates for Lincoln County offices

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — In one of the nation’s most overwhelmingly Republican states, the party is entering the final stretch of a bruising primary campaign deeply divided over who should become the nominee for governor.

Nearly all of Nebraska’s GOP establishment leaders are&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-pete-ricketts-tom-osborne-nebraska-06508801bb69a73f4c0a4e505e4b341f">lining up</a>&nbsp;behind businessman Jim Pillen, believing he would be the easy favorite to win in November. But no endorsement matters quite like that of former President Donald Trump, who is&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-elections-nebraska-omaha-pete-ricketts-44015f418ecaf6910e5569a80345696e">backing his longtime friend</a>&nbsp;Charles Herbster and will hold a rally on his behalf Friday. And in a twist, a third candidate, state Sen. Brett Lindstrom, is emerging as a strong contender in part because of an endorsement from the mayor of Omaha, the state’s biggest city.

Whoever comes out on top in the state’s May 10 primary will enter the general election in a strong position against Democratic state Sen. Carol Blood. But the fractures that have surfaced during the primary campaign, particularly in the wake of groping accusations from multiple women against Herbster, have frustrated GOP leaders in Nebraska.

“It’s unfortunate,” said state Sen. Steve Halloran, a conservative Republican and longtime party activist. “What we’re seeing here is creating a lot of tension within the party.”

There has been little polling in the nine-person primary race to succeed two-term Republican Gov. Pete Ricketts, who can’t seek reelection because of term limits. Herbster was seen as a strong front-runner through much of the race but is now fighting&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-pete-ricketts-nebraska-legislature-c3e80ae9a8235d9db3896c35c997543a">accusations that he groped at least eight young women at public events.</a>

Herbster has denied the allegations and has even filed a lawsuit against state Sen. Julie Slama, the only accuser to be identified by name. Slama, who has endorsed Pillen, has counter-sued, accusing Herbster of trying to silence a sexual assault victim.

The allegations have roiled the race, with Herbster airing an ad that accuses Ricketts and Pillen of orchestrating the allegations. The spot points to Slama’s ties to Ricketts as a former campaign spokeswoman and one of his legislative appointees. Her attorney called the ad a “vicious new political advertisement” and the lawsuit “a frivolous and bad faith attempt to bully a sexual assault victim into silence.”

On Tuesday, four other female Republican state lawmakers said they were setting up a legal fund to help others who have accused Herbster.

“He is a predator,” said Sen. Lou Ann Linehan of Omaha.

Trump defied much of Nebraska’s GOP establishment when he endorsed Herbster, rewarding a longtime supporter and ignoring Ricketts’ request that he stay out of the race. After Trump’s endorsement, Ricketts released a scathing statement about Herbster and then endorsed Pillen, who also has been backed by a host of Nebraska luminaries, including former Gov. Kay Orr, the influential Nebraska Farm Bureau, and renowned former University of Nebraska football coach and congressman Tom Osborne.

The allegations haven’t stopped Trump from scheduling a visit Friday to a motor racetrack between Lincoln and Omaha, where Herbster will be a featured speaker. Trump remains popular in Republican-dominated Nebraska, but some campaign experts question whether his blessing will be enough to offset Pillen’s support from top Nebraska Republicans or Lindstrom’s recent surge.

“Without question, the Trump endorsement has value,” said Chris Peterson, a Nebraska Republican campaign strategist and lobbyist who isn’t affiliated with any of the candidates for governor. “But what we’ve seen over the last few months is that most Republican primary voters already associate Herbster with Trump, so that’s largely factored into their calculus.”

As he waded into this year’s contentious primary races, Trump has ignored a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-entertainment-congress-senate-elections-general-elections-ea0839430fc28a6b08227223c0b4e045">long list of allegations</a>&nbsp;leveled against candidates he supported. He endorsed football great Herschel Walker for an open Senate seat in Georgia, despite allegations that Walker repeatedly threatened to kill his ex-wife and her new boyfriend and exaggerated claims of business success, among others.

He backed one of his former aides, Max Miller, for an Ohio congressional seat even though Miller’s ex-girlfriend, former White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham — who also served as a top aide to former first lady Melania Trump — had accused Miller of growing abusive as their relationship deteriorated. Miller has denied the charges.

Some endorsements have come back to sting Trump.

Trump originally threw his support behind Sean Parnell, an Army veteran, in Pennsylvania’s competitive Senate race. But Parnell eventually chose to drop his bid amid allegations of abuse by his estranged wife that he has denied.

Ryan Horn, an Omaha-based political strategist, said Trump’s endorsement of Herbster may be a turnoff for many of the same suburban Omaha Republicans who were skeptical of Trump in 2020. Horn said he doesn’t think Pillen has made much headway with them, either, despite the Ricketts endorsement.

“There’s just something about both of those guys that left voters unsatisfied,” Horn said.

Horn said that could give an edge to Lindstrom, an Omaha financial adviser who has focused his campaign on cutting taxes.

With no clear front-runner, the vote could be tight. The last time Nebraska Republicans were running for an open governor’s seat in 2014, Ricketts won a heated six-man race by less than 2,400 votes and claimed less than 27% of the total Republican primary vote.

Other GOP candidates running are former state Sen. Theresa Thibodeau, who had been Hebster’s running mate but left the campaign; Breland Ridenour, an Omaha information technology manager; and other lesser-known names.

Neb. notable destinations to light up red for National Travel and Tourism Week

Entries are now open for the Keith County Youth Entrepreneurship Competition.

The contest provides high school students in Keith County with an opportunity to receive funding for new or existing businesses.

Students in ninth through 12th grades, as of the 2022-23 school year, are eligible to compete. They must submit their business ideas or provide details about their current business in the application.

Judges will select up to 10 semi-finalists to participate in a training focused on starting and operating a small business.

Entries open for Keith County Youth Entrepreneurship Competition

CHADRON – Tourism businesses, attractions, employees and volunteers will be recognized for their valuable contributions to the Northwest Nebraska tourism industry with the recent creation of an awards program.

Discover Northwest Nebraska will honor a Business/Attraction of the Year, a Frontline Employee of the Year and a Volunteer of the Year for their efforts in the tourism industry during 2022. The program was announced last week at the organization’s Treasure Chest of the Northwest, the region’s annual tourism-industry gathering.

“Tourism generates more than $20 million in economic impact in Dawes County annually, and we want to encourage businesses, attractions, employees and volunteers in our region to go above and beyond to attract visitors and provide them with excellent customer service,” said Discover Northwest Nebraska Director Kerri Rempp.

Nominations for the awards will be due March 1 each year, and they will be presented at the annual tourism gathering, Treasure Chest of the Northwest, each spring. Online nominations can be submitted at http://discovernwnebraska.com/industry-awards/.

Nearly five dozen members of the regional tourism industry gathered April 21 to prepare for the upcoming season. Customer service, marketing and industry resources were discussed, and a regional brochure exchange also took place. Northwest Nebraska, a cooperation between Dawes and Sioux counties, is coming off of its most successful tourism season. Highlights for the upcoming season include annual events such as Fur Trade Days, Crawford’s July 4 celebration and the Harvest Moon Fall Festival, as well as new additions like the Northwest Nebraska Volksmarch. The Dawes County Historical Museum will be featured on the Nebraska Passport Program and host a Smithsonian traveling exhibit, and the Museum of the Fur Trade is part of Nebraska History’s new Wander Nebraska program.

“We held our first Treasure Chest event in 2021, providing information for the upcoming tourism season and networking opportunities for businesses and attractions serving the regional tourism industry,” Rempp said. “This year’s event included expanded networking opportunities and a regional brochure exchange. We want industry representatives to have knowledge in their hands to answer traveler’s questions and provide a memorable visitor experience.”

Severe storms, high winds return to Greater Nebraska this weekend

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Governors from eight Midwest states asked the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Thursday for a permanent waiver that will allow each state to continue selling ethanol-blended gas year-round without restriction.

The EPA’s decision last week to suspend restrictions of summer sales of the lower-carbon, lower-cost E15 gasoline is temporary and only applies to the 2022 summer driving season.

E15 is usually prohibited between June 1 and Sept. 15 because of concerns that it adds to smog in high temperatures.

The bipartisan group of governors from Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin sent a joint letter to EPA Administrator Michael Reagan formally requesting the waiver.

“This letter sends the clear message that renewable fuels are the immediate solution to high gas prices, lower emissions, and restoring our energy independence, and we are proud to stand up and take this historic action,” said Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds.

The Renewable Fuels Association, which promotes use of ethanol, embraced the states’ action.

“These governors should be applauded for pursuing a simple regulatory solution that will allow consumers in their states to benefit from E15’s lower cost and lower emissions 365 days a year,” said Geoff Cooper, the association’s president and CEO. “Once this notification is approved by EPA, it will mean lower pump prices for drivers in these eight states, lower tailpipe pollution, a more secure energy supply, and a more vibrant rural economy.”

Earlier this month, President Joe Biden traveled to corn-rich Iowa to announce that his administration will temporarily allow E15 gas, which is blended with 15% ethanol, to be sold this summer to help ease gas prices.

Biden administration officials said the action will save drivers an average of 10 cents per gallon based on current prices, but at just 2,300 gas stations out of the nation’s more than 100,000. The affected stations are mostly in the Midwest and the South, including Texas, according to industry groups.

Commissioners approved staff recommendations that will help the agency manage big game populations at socially acceptable levels, address declining mule deer populations in some areas of the state, and maintain resident access to hunting permits.
